Hey Marleen!

I really like the shadingtechnique in the second one: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=595757&d=1234891137.
And I love the portraits! Maybe I should do so too :^^:

Keep in mind when you're drawing Marleen, and this applies to pretty much everything:
Gesture first, then proportion.
for example in your portraits, try to capture the general shape then focus more and check your proportions against one another, is the models eyes really that high compared to the ears/nose, mouth. in other words check the horizontals and verticals.
those hands are pretty great though.

Thank you all for replying ^^, now I'm going to reply to your replies and make the last part of the big update :teeth:

@ Clochette, Wookiedabo, : thanks :scribbly:
@ Marlisa; thanks :lineart:, I see what you mean with the texture of the board underneath, I really hate that actually. That's why I usually have a large amount of papers beneath the paper I'm drawing on, so that texture doesn't show as much ;)
@ Dose; I see yourp point, thanks.. Maybe I should pick up the daily posemaniacs again.. As it's such a good practice and doesn't take very long..
@ Teh Gosu; Hiya! I study Illustration at the HKU, yes I have fun, though some assignments feel pretty useless to me, but I guess that's what you get almost everywhere anyway.
@ Marlisa; thanks for the kick in the butt :scribbly:, Always nice to know some people would like to see more updates.. I've been pretty busy indeed, but also just neglected the sketchbook a little. Will pick this up again now though..
@ PaperX; yes, I see the problem with pointing out individual images. But I guess I'll keep it like this for now. If you want you can use the row method of pointing out, it takes a little more time though.. :lineart:
Thanks so much for the pointer on compressed charcoal! I didn't even know that existed?! Will ask my local art supply store about them. It sounds a lot better. I'm actually a bit bummed by the texture the vine charcoal gives when shading large areas, so I will definitely give the compressed charcoal a try ^^
I will try to get in some more finished stuff, but my assignments don't really give me time for that. Will scrape together some spare time for it though^^ It always feels so much better to have something actually finished.
I will watch out for the similar faces, thanks for pointing that out as well! :lineart:
@ Marlisa (again); hehe, yeah we had the assignment to draw 30 portraits on A4, so there was room to experiment.. Which is cool :)
@ Seanie; thanks for stopping by mister cat thrower! :scribbly: Though I have more pages, I only made two last year.. :( so realy we both need to work harde hehe:mittenbop:.. Love you :groupie1: haha!
@ Taj; thanks, I'll keep it in mind :lineart:

Wow, those were a lot of replies.. Now here's the update ^^

Just some school assignments for various subjects put together.. Also there is no chronological order :P Some of these are last week and some are last year

Hope you like ^^
Soon there will be an update with new stuffs :teeth:

@ Merlin; Heya Merlin! I really like your last update ^^ will stop by your SB soon :).. School is definitely fun, but some of the assignments are a bit weird :P but I guess you can never like every assignment you get :lineart:
---
a little update yay

I started some posemaniacs again :)
598600

Also I did two speedpaints from ref., one digital and one traditional (H2Oil paint), both approximately a bit more than an hour.. :)
* Note to self: next time paint the neck at the same time as the face and not afterwards lol :P
598601

598605

And here are some sketches with the theme 'self confidence'. We have to search for images that relate to a word we got (I cot 'self-confident'), but I didn't feel like just looking for images all day so I drew some of the images I found. Also the last page with the chair is from 'life' (I have a miniature model of that chair)

598606

598608

That was my stuff for the day.. Hoping to put in more work tomorrow, have a lot of homework to do ^^

Love,
Marleen.

little update
---
Two portraits, just studies of colour.. Second is also to try out some of Icons brushes in Painter. I used Noukah (http://conceptart.org/forums/member.php?u=64053)'s avatar as a ref for the second.
600133 600134

My daily posemaniacs again.. :S Gets kinda boring to post these, I think I'll skip posting these every time.. and just show these every few weeks/ days.

600135

And two little sketchies:

600136 600137

That's it again.. :)
I must say that CA is such a motivating place ^^ :teeth: just regularly updating my sketchbook again and being active here again makes me draw much more!

Loads of figures! Grreeeeeeeeaaaaaat! :D But do some from photos too, Posemaniac's 3D models don't really look like humans, and also look kind of flat D: Mixing it seems like a good solution. Keep goingggggggg!

just one crit, soften some of the edges in the shadow (eg: here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=600134&d=1235324413)) to push them back a bit.

-- Update --
Replies will come later because I'm sooo busy, I actually don't have time for this update, but I really wanted to update so here it is anyway :P
---

Figures from ref (randomly from a large folder of refs), and posemaniacs:

601157

Still life studies from class today: goal was to draw different textures and structures with different lines:

601158 601162

601159 601161

Got the chance to do a small part of lifedrawing with another class.. (only half an hour) :) It's been quite a while.. The upper two are 3-min, and the lower ones 5-min

601163 601164

601165 601166

Train sketch in my A5 moleskine notebook:

601167

Painter study from last night, after a study by Bloodstone (Noëlle) (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1234867#post1234867)
601168

Some sketches that I found in my moleskine, these are from the last few months:

601169 601170 601171

601173 601174

So, quite a big update for one day :P But a lot is older than a day as well.
Now I have to go start my homework.. Damn :P SB updates take so long ^^

the bloodstone study looks great!

i think during your studies you should really sit down and worry about quality over quantity. it's great you are doing so many but some of them feel rushed and not very accurate (assuming you are using photo or RL ref). that's not to say draw a photorealistic copy but maybe worry more about structure or what you are setting out to learn by doing those portraits etc.

Wow Marleen you've come so far in 4 years.

The line, shadow, form and shape in you work as improved so much lately.
I think the values in your stuff could get even better tho, ti's getting there in you digis, but so darker shadows and line in the pencils could really improve that!
Good Posemaniac studies as well, but watch the proportions, sometimes the head looks slightly too big.
Really dig the painting's as well (oils?), wonderful energy!

And I love the way you post your images too, real good to look though, so thanks:)

You've been working real hard, try to keep it up,

cheers

good stuff marleen! I kinda agree with hp about quantity over quality but sometimes that works both ways. quantity is much better than not drawing thats for sure...as long as you got the drive, you will improve :)

an idea i would suggest is maybe when not drawing, but simply looking at the work of an artist you admire, try to analyse and understand what it is that makes the piece good. remember it for next time you draw and try to experiment and understand how and why the artist choose to do things a certain way. I find thinking contributes to quite a bit of improvement in art along with practice :)

keep it up!

I don't have much time (i'm continuing my selfportrait-painting thing) so I'll write in dutch this time (sorry non-dutch speaking people!):

Dikke knuffel,
Marlisa

@ hp;Thanks! It would be a good idea indeed to define what I want to learn with each study.. So that I have an idea of what I'm actualy learning by doing them (which is also more motivating ^^)
@ JailHouseRock2; thanks for all the compliments and crits! Will work with them. The last traditional painting was Water soluble oil paints.. Which work quite in the same way as oils, but only without the stinky turpenoid to thin them down :teeth:. I love those paints ^^
@ paperX; wow, really good advice! Some master studies might be in place as well ^^ *makes another to do list*
@ Marlisa; wow, you really made me smile :teeth: That is a big compliment to refer to my work.. :scribbly:.. My way of painting is just trial and error I think.. I usually mix my paint in a midtone, light and shadow colour and put those colours where I think they should go on the drawing. Then I start mixing and adding some different colours.. But it's really frustrating when while mixing I can't find the right colour back and it just seems to mess stuff up.
One thing I learned from a nice teacher I have is that we should not pin down to one technique to draw/paint something. It's much more rewarding to find a number of techniques to draw something, because there's no need to specialize just yet (in our first year of art school).. I think she has a point there. So I'll try to experiment in my techniques a bit more I think.

small update

I hope I'll have more to show tonight, but I have so many things to do today that it might not come to drawing/painting today :S Damn social life :P

here are a few studies of a wad of cotton wool, goal was to experiment and find some good ways to draw/paint it.

@ PaperX; Thanks :) You're right about the chin.. Will try to definite it on tomorrow mornings train ride ^^
@ Marlisa; thanks also :scribbly:, the SP was done in about 30 minutes, which is not really quick, but more like quick for me doing such a self portrat hihi. The wad of cotton studies were difficult yes.. But I found out something: they make GREAT references for strange cloud shapes! I will definitely use them for cloud references some day haha.

another small update
I've been really busy with preparing a presentation for tomorrow, so unfortunately not a lot of drawing :( But here's what I did anyway.

also wanted to add that when you do posemaniacs, for the shorter poses don't be afraid to draw thru the body with structure as opposed to just doing a contour.

So I thought a new CA update might get me motivated to draw and paint all day from now on.. :S I'll let you know if it worked.

Aargh, now I hate my school even more.
The only things we learn is how to fuck op something you've worked on for 3 hours and how to make modernish paintings that suck (for examples; look at my SB... -_-').
I would give anything to learn how to bind books too! :[
But hey, that's waaaay to traditional teaching, so my school would NEVER do something like that...

Oke, enough complaining.

This update is really cool :). I like the dreamy colours in this one http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=618755&d=1237029142

@ Marlisa; aaah :( It's not so bad though.. You have some nice classes as well right? For example I'm jealous of you because you have more model drawing ;) If you want we can go bookbinding together on a tuesday or wednesday ^^ That's when the bookprint thing is open at my school :teeth:
By the way, I recently got my first "Kill your darlings!" and it wasn't fun.. So I know what you're going through.. kind of. And we hardly get anything traditional like how to handle charcoal or how to use paint, the teachers give us some things to do and then we have to experiment to figure out a good way to use the material :S I would like some practical tips to mix paints for example, or how to use charcoal to get soft transitions.. Ah well, just try to make the best out of it? :) We should paint and draw together for a weekend.. That would be motivating I think! :teeth:
Oh yes, I'll explain the assignment you asked for in my update :scribble:
@ Smarty; yes! I love being able to make my own sketchbooks too! Because they rarely have the sketchbooks that I want, so now I just buy the right paper and make one myself if I want to haha :teeth: My little books have a number of flaws still though, but I don't really care ^^
@ `ej; thanks! Maybe you can ask in your school if there's an option to learn to bind books some time? You're right, it really does come in handy and looks very professional. By the way: you're in Artez right? I live in Meppel, like 15 minutes from Zwolle, so maybe we could meet up and sketch some time ^^

little update, some things I forgot to scan and more work on the painting.

619719 619722

619723 619724
Felt like doing portraits last night but failed horribly in my opinion..
Though strange proportions on the left one are on purpose..

619725

619726 619728
The assignment for this image was to make a still life portraying a word (mine: self-confidence), then take a picture of this still life, and then make an illustration based on the picture. I made this pretty big (70 x 100 cm), with (hopefully) confident brushstrokes, so I hope I portrayed the word well enough :S
This should have been finished 4 weeks ago, but I missed that lesson and didn't do the assignment then :P so this is catching up haha.
EDIT: SHIT! I just see that the right (viewers left) arm is really really wonky! :S damn..

619729
That's me while painting today.. I look pretty young here but people usually think I'm younger than I am (19) so I guess it looks like me haha. My love took the picture, he was bugging me a bit taking pictures all the time.

619730
I cut out these dancers for an assignment, but don't think I'll use them.. They're cut out of bubble wrap foil stuff.. :S

So that was my little update for the day.. I'm horribly behind on school stuff so I have to get back to working on school stuff right now.. :(

small updatesie!
Went to school today to find out the teacher was sick at home.. Thanks for calling us! (not) :S That was 3 hours of travelling for nothing :P
Then I got home and started a little sketch for fun before I would start homework (less fun), and got carried away haha.. That's this update mostly.
Now it's time for me to finally start homework before I have to sleep in one hour.. :( gah what do I do wrong with my planning? :P

Little tryout

621740 621741 621742
I like this one ^^ The last image was a photograph, taken when the background was still wet. I held the paper against the light and the wet areas were see-through :P pretty fun effect!

621747 621748
this is a bit of Work in Progress for an assignment :S blegh

621751
where I am now with this assignment (after about 2-3 hours I think?) With another 2 hours it should be finished :P I don't really like this haha.

hmm nice updates !
maybe on the last thingy you could at thin black strokes around the figure so that the figure belongs more to the gold/black background. Just a idea i had lol

yup iam on Artez would be nice to sketch sometime! After the summer i got my own atelier on school so u should come and visit me then ( als ik mijn propedeuse haal natuurlijk XD ) :)

@ Merlin; Hiya, thanks! You're doing great, love the oilpaintings! Will stop by soon ;) I actually quite like the left arm myself, maybe because of the weird elbow, for me the right arm bugs me a bit, hmm.. :) Haha @ brush chewing.. I think you saw that I wasn't really chewing on my brush right? ;) :scribble:
@ `ej; Nice idea about the black strokes.. I'm not sure whether I want her to blend in with the background though, I will consider it :) but first I want to see what it looks like when the background is finished ^^ Would be fun to come visit your school next year ^^ Do you really get an atelier for your own? Or like for your group? We have one for our group, and next year we get a new one ^^ I'm defnitely looking forward to that.
I didn't go to Artez because I liked Illustration at the HKU a lot, so decided to go there after I was accepted. :)

hey, yeh if you choose fine art (autonome kunst)
you get a atelier in the second year for you own or u share a bigger room with 1 or 2 persons but most rooms are for one person.
Then in 3rd you move to another room, and in 4th you move another time.

If you choose Story and Design ( thats graphic design, illustration, animation etc.)
then you don't get a atelier same for interieur design.

what year are you now?

Hi all!! :teeth:
@ JailHouseRock2; thanks so much!
@ Marlisa; Thanks! Might be a nice idea to do a watercolour study of that painting yes :scribbly: I'm supposed to experiment a lot for school though, so I think I should go over the top with it haha collage or mixed media or something, or else they'll say again that I didn't put enough effort into experimenting :P Oh! I'll e-mail you about the weekend ^^
@ Sean; Thanks man! That's a lot of encouragement :D means a lot.. :teeth Miss you too sweetiepie :P I read back a little on the first page of this sketchbook, and my English definitely did get better since then :) Though quality may vary depending on the time of the day.. Currently at 7 AM it isn't so good lol. About inserting images into your post (and writing between it), I recently explained this to Marlisa, so I'll just quote myself from there ^^
How to put your attachments in your posts is a bit hidden indeed :) after you uploaded your attachments, you have to click on the little paperclip icon above the writing area (it's next to the fonts, sizes and smiley).. Then you get a dropdown menu of all the images you have attached, and when you click one, that puts it in your post. Usually with posts with lots of images it's easier to click "insert all", which inserts every image into your posts immediately. You can still write between the images, and use "preview post" to see if everything looks correct. Also another tip for uploading attachments: to avoid to have to fill in each dropdown menu and the copyright information each time you upload an image: Just fill in the information, upload the first image, then after that is done you hit the backspace, or right click -> back, and you go back to the previous screen with all the filled in information. Then you click browse and pick the next file you want to upload, and it uploads with the already filled in information.. Saves a lot of time!!
@ crimsoneye; hiya! :) thanks
@ `ej; Wow that's so cool! But then again if I'd study Illustration there I wouldn't get an atelier at all, so I guess I'm better off at Illustration at the HKU :) I'll certainly come by sometime when you have your own atelier space! I'm in year one for Illustration.. I have evaluations this week so I'm kinda nervous :/
---
a bit of sketchyness
I've been busy with non-sketching stuff, like collecting different fonts and crazy characters, and I've been sewing a blow up font character (literally), which I'm now trying to keep from deflating in 15 minutes (grrr :P) Will post pictures soon when those are finished or in a better stadium.. Also I'm trying to find time to make two illustrations in between and bind a book with pictures of me.. I really do three times the amount of work I usually do in evaluation week.. Bad huh?

These are all train sketches:

625829 625830

625831 625832

Hopefully I have some more to show soon.. I'll take some pictures from stuff I have still lying around at school and all.

I just noticed when I clicked on the link to your SB :). I'm going to link you too, but I don't know much people here, so you're going to be very lonely in my signature haha.

The train sketches look nice. Are they from ref or from mind? (i'm asking because I tried to sketch myself a week ago from mind, but it was soo hard!)
I like the skeleton that you can see through his skin in the first sketch (you know what I mean). That's exactly how we're supposed to observe the animals at the Zoo... but that's actually really hard in real life whaha :P.

Knufs!

P.S; I think I'm developping a new forum addiction... -_-'

little update ^^

629857
This was an assignment, done a few weeks ago: we had to collect 12 objects that we thought associated with a certain word (mine was self-confidence). Then we had to create black silhouettes out of these objects and make a composition of these silhouettes.

629858
"finished" work after the last sketch from last update.. Not too happy about it.. It's a bit ehm boring I think ^^

629859
this is less boring, but reads less good.. And is still not finished, plus the hair is kinda flat.

629860
this is the inflatable A (Font: Goudy Sans) that I've been working on for Typography (about 15 hours I think, not including sketches, little models etc. But it was a lot of fun to make!!).. We had to make a big 3D font character in a material that suited the it. Then we had to take pictures of it. I'll take some new pictures soon, this one was taken pretty quickly the evening before evaluation. So I'll take some better pictures soon. I taped all the seams with see through plastic tape, and it doesn't deflate as quickly anymore :).

Now I'm back to the regular fun studies :D expect a newish update tomorrow :teeth:

Wooh... that's a really cool A! :D Must be difficult to make.. (I don't know, I have a love/hate-affaire with sewing machines -_-')
I liked the light in this one;

.. and I'm sure it would make;
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=629858&d=1238083617
that one a lot more ehm... don't know the english word.
Well... more interesting :^^:.
Ofcourse i don't know what the assignment is, so I can't really tell.

Hello, Marleen! Wonderful work through all these pages since the last time I dropped by...

Give some more time to your rendering. You're quite close to an aesthetic breakthrough, you just need to devote some more time to a piece and smooth out those values!

Good luck :)

@ hp; Thanksss!
@ Marlisa; hmm you're right, the light in the sketch is better ^^ Maybe I should pay more attention to why a sketch is working, before making it on a larger scale.
@ IanE; thanks :scribble:! Close to an aesthetic breakthrough? That sounds pretty cool ;) will take your advice.. I guess I could take some more time rendering my train sketches :lineart:
@ Brun; thanks for the encouragement !!

Updateeeeeeee :P

I've been busy drawing hands, lots of 'em, because that's a homework assignment (which I actually really really like because I love practicing hand drawing)
So here are some hands, and other sketches:

634001 634006 634007

634009 634011

634016 634017

634019 634020

These last two were sketches for something where we have to make an image out of text.. not my kind of thing, but I'll try better later this week.

hey noë, nice updates. love the confidence thing. but i have some crits:

when i look at your sketches, you want to give it more depth by rendering it some, but alot of your pencil strokes look a bit 'guessed' to me. 'that side is abit shadow-ish' kind of thing... you know what i mean? :)

i know this problem and i really started to 'know' where shadows should be more when i saw this picture in a book. if you know these really simple rules, it makes drawing a complex thing a lot more simple if you break it down to these basic principles.for example, some of the hand drawings you made in post#801, its very complex to draw. It contains a lot of information about form. but if you can look at it in a very fundamental level, you stop losing yourself in details. knowing these rules also allows you to interpretate things more spacial, for example, this thumb sticks out forward, so that thumb casts a shadow on the other parts.

hope i made any sense at all :P

anyways.. these are the basic rules i was talking about. Its from the book i bought for ID. Its from my teacher koos eissen, he is the king.
hope you can get something out of it. see ya!

@ `ej; hello! ^^ evaluations were okay :) both a pass.. What do you mean with "the black silhouettes"? The hands right? Or maybe the underwear thing ^^ :P
@ Teh_Gosu; hiya! ^^ thanks for dropping by! The problem with shading is I think that in our school assignments we need to draw quickly, so I don't pay attention to shading much.. But it is something that I can pay extra attention to in my personal sketches ofcourse ^^ :) thanks for bringing it under my attention. :) Also the ID sketches are really handy ^^ Having fun at school? :teeth:
@ Marlisa; thanks for stopping by! Glad you like the final self confidence person most ^^ means I took good decisions yeah! :P

Update again
I don't have much time again, so I won't go explaining everything, as I maybe should.. I might do that later today.
I'll just attach these images now, not in chronological order, so you can just see them haha ^^
It's mostly lifedrawing, where we had to keep the charcoal on the paper, and capture movement of the model, but also some other stuffs ^^

its a shame they only do short poses... i recognize that from an art school i did for a little while, all 2minute poses... i didnt progress at all in the time i did those classes because i made the same mistakes over and over... to understand form at a certain point, its really good to be slow...

but enough about that.. yeah school is really cool but i dont have much time for drawing anymore :P druk druk :)

cheers

@ Marlisa; thank you ^^
@ `ej; wow haha :) thanks.. Glad to be the reason you work harder.. :S I feel pretty lazy myself most of the time though.. :/ The silhouettes were cut out of shiny black paper, and glued to a nice white paper. For the silhouettes I made photos of every object first, and then I drew the objects from mirrored photos on the back of the shiny black paper. Then I cut them out and made a composition.
@ Teh_Gosu; We don't only do very short poses :) we vary from 2 to 30 minutes I think.. :) last lesson the longest pose we did was 5 indeed, but it varies. I think there is still a lot to learn from short poses as well, but I'll have to keep critical yes, so thanks for that ^^

:scribble:Hi CA people ^_^,

I just want to update to say that I didn't make the last evaluation.. My Illustrations didn't communicate enough and I didn't have enough own style in my Illustration works (works for other classes were fine).
I must say I'm a little sad and dissapointed (Marlisa I totally know how you felt with the bad evaluations now! I cried too :scribble: )...
But I'll have to do some extra assignments for Illustration and I'll be able to do a retry in August...
I just hope my hardest that this retry doesn't fall in the days of the CA Europe workshop. The other subjects beside Illustration were good, but since Illustration is my biggest subject I need that to be good to pass to the next year.

So that's that for the update on my evaluation, just wanted to let you know.
Expect a real art update in about 3 days :)

Marleen.

Marlisa
May 26th, 2009, 05:49 AM
Aahw Marleentje! I feel a bit sad too now, because as you said; I know the feeling :( that sucks big time!

You work so hard... I don't understand why you didn't pass it. But then again; I don't understand it either when this happens to me or to a classmate, because I think everyone works hard.
When I see what you've been making at school, and at home in your 'freetime', your work totally has a Marleen-feeling.
I guess the teachers don't know enough work of you, because I could pick 'a Marleen' out of a collection of 100 works from other artists (this is a compliment, haha. It's hard to convert it from dutch to english ;) ).

You probably don't like your school right now, (I feel the same about mine)... but when they see that you've worked really hard (again) for august, they have to get more sympathy for you. That will result definately in higher grades. :)

And IF they are insane and don't let you pass again, you are so talented that you definately could make it on your own, or find another study that's better for you :) (my cousin was at HKU too, didn't like it either, stopped in her 3rd year... ;) ). But that's worst case scenario, you must forget this and only read this if you don't pass it.

Dikke verpletterende knuffel!

verry free and you experiment alot i really like you portraits studies
and all the crazy funn sketches,

you work soo hard i reaally hope you get it, you deserve it!!

i dont know if you do this already but
try to talk alot with the teachers let them give crits so you can learn
from that and improve your work, show them your work alot to

what works for me is also to show a process of a piece from start to finish
they always like to see that.

i hope this helps a bit for you, wish you all the best

small update :)
I'm still busy producing a book with our school class, but I'm free to draw on mornings and evenings :)
Yesterday I cleaned up my space (it was a BIG mess) and started some posemaniacs, today I did some more posemaniacs, went to school and decided to try a digi.. hey 'leen, you are sure superproductive!

one thing that might help with digital, try painting in all the darks first, and then paint in the light. on the face, it looks like it "lacks personality" because the front plane of the face is all the same flat color, and it looks like you blended it in with a dark thing but there is no color variation in the front, no form because there's no value change. try painting/blocking in all in dark colors, and then paint in the light areas over it. it'll be a much better mix, and the form will look better. personality also must come from expression...you can't give the person a blank expression and expect it to have personality. study facial expressions, features, things like that, and try to incorporate that into your stuff. i'll elaborate later if you want. hope this helps. :)

Marlisa

... I dislike the feel of the digital sketch though, it kinda lacks personality and feeling. (but ofcourse I love the person I tried to sketch -> Marlisa haha :teeth:)

Haha :P Well I think it's a good start :) I hope you want to finish it, because I would love to see how you work this out. :)

The posemaniacs look good, I'm doing some of them too now, + some characterdesign photo refs.
I think it's really good that you try to draw anatomy from your head, I should do that too so I can see on what I have to work more (blagh, i don't know why but I think my brain is overheated... all my english doesn't make any sense i.m.o.)

Good to see that you're working so hard on other stuff now you have the time for it :).

Knuffs!

Edit: I also would love to see some anatomy studies who are more worked out, more fleshy if you know what I mean :) I'm curious how you would do that (I do that all the time, I actually should be focussing at the lines though :P )

I got the assignment for my retry for school (which decides if I get kicked out or not)... It basically says: "Do all the assignments for the subjects 'Illustration' and 'Research' from the past half year again. Expand your image vocabulary, deepen the research, and surpass the clichés."
I dislike the assignment because we have to do everything all over again with no change, except that we just need to do it better.
For all our illustration assignments the past half year we were given one character feature with which to work, mine being "self-confident". I really disliked the character feature to begin with and that showed in my work, but now I have to immerse myself in it again, and do 10 times better.
I know I will do it, but I just look up to it because I remember sitting at my drawing table for hours being fed up with the assignments and nothing useful coming out of my head for the assignment, and I see it happening all over again.

But now, end of the rant and start of the last updat for the day:
from now on I'll update once a day ^_^

I went out in the backyard today to sit in the sun, and decided to do a selfportrait. After half an hour my skin was turning red and my eyes hurt from the sun so I went back inside again, but it was nice, and here's my SP :P
684002

I also did some more posemaniacs, mainly to get my mind cleared because I just received the e-mail with the assignment and I felt a bit down
683997

Also I went back to Marlisa's portrait, sorry about the lips dear, I guess I'll have to do some lip studies ;), it's still a WIP, but getting better I think :)

yoyo! funny to see so many updates now that school is over:) love the blind posemaniacs, theyre so much fun to do dont you think?
bummer that the re-assignment is doing it all over again. they are so NOT creative:D
if i can give you an advice it would be, go far far away from what youve done already. not only because they didnt like that, but so that you dont get the feeling you've been there before! and of course dont hestitate to throw in some experiment, they'll probably more happy to see wonky anatomy in a good experiment then flawless anatomy. but you already knew all of that i guess...

i believe in you:)

hey, 'leen! do you have any bridgman books? i personally HIGHLY recommend him for learning how to draw from your head. the ones i personally like best from him are Life Drawing, Human Machine, Constructive Anatomy. and maybe the 100 Hands thrown in for good measure. all of these were really cheap for me to buy (like, $7 or less...i don't know how they would be in the Netherlands though... ), and they contain TOOOOOONS of information, not just of muscles and bones, but of overall form and 3d-ness as well. as for exercises and things to study, i would recommend doing parts in isolation, and working overall gesture as well, and then as you get confident with parts start incorporating larger systems of parts until you eventually get to drawing the whole body (for example: lower leg->upper leg->foot->whole leg, and so on). get to know the shapes of the parts from all different angles, and then do lots of imagination drawings of them from different angles, and when you have a person in a certain pose, you will be able to do more detailed things because you have done the parts in similar positions before, and you use your memory to draw out the right look of the parts.

one big thing to notice and remember is that every little shift of a body part affects the whole body. so even lifting up your arm from straight down to straight up affects your shoulder level, which affects the torso, which affects the hips and their level, which affects the stance and balance all the way down to the toes. so you reeeally have to analyze and think about it when you make up poses. it may sound complicated, but the more you do the more this will come natural to you, so that there's less "thinking" involved. this is one reason i would discourage whole body multiple limb things, because it totally leaves out the change in the torso that happens when limbs change position, and i think that ignores the rhythm of the body and the sense of balance, which hurts the realism of the pose. but, i'm no sketch cop, you can practice whatever you want. this is all things i would recommend, and you can and will make your own decisions about what to do. :) i also recommend, if you can find a copy of it, Gottfried Bammes books (Der Nackte Mensch, and actually, if you can find it, though it's expensive, Gestalt des Menschen (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=1665584), or something like that). he does a TON with motion and analyzing the figure, like how moving certain parts affect the rest of the body. so i would TOOOOOTALLY recommend his stuff as well. :)

the newest digi is looking really good, and muuuuuch better, so awesome points on that! i think that i wasn't really good at communicating what i meant regarding dark and light (i was heading out for work this morning, so i was rushing...sry :bashful: ). what i had meant to say was, not just placing the darks first, but blocking the whole object in in a sort of dark tone (whatever color it should be), and then working lighter and lighter until you get to the lightest part of the painting. this is just something i recommend trying as a way to get form down better. in traditional drawing, it's pretty much the opposite most of the time: you draw in lightly, start working in your lights and then slowly layer until you get to the darks, and then pull back the reflected light and the highlights (if you erase). so this is similar, but just starting from the other way around. this would be similar to working in oils (or something like that...not really sure cause i rarely use real paint, but i think this way translates well to real paint...at least, it did the last time i used real paint...), doing an underpainting and then painting on top of that so that there's some underneath color getting through, and it seems to blend better for me, but that's just me...i'm not so good at painting yet. to better illustrate (a looooooot better ;) ), here's a really helpful tutorial from the man himself, Jason Manley, talking about a traditional approach to creating digital art (http://www.gfxartist.com/features/tutorials/7714).

i hope this all helps. i love seeing how hard you work, and how much you've improved. so be encouraged. keep it up dude, we support you!!!

@ ajvenemap; I know, it's a bit strange, but it feels so much freeër to draw now, I actually draw much much more than when I was in school :S Better keep this up on my asisgnment as well haha :teeth: I loved the blind posemaniacs as well, 30 seconds seem like so much more time when you don't look at the paper! I'm turning these blind ones into my daily thing as well, hand eye coördination improvement +1 :P. Thanks for the advice on the assignment. I'll definitely try to go far away from my first ideas :lineart:
@ purb36; hiya! Wow that is one damn long post dude! Thanks so much! I really wish I could thank you thrice for that post haha ^_^. I actually do have the big Bridgeman book (complete guide to drawing from life), which contains most of the smaller books, I don't know why I didn't start doing studies from it earlier, I guess I just though to leave it for later :S, thanks for reminding! I don't think I have money for the other books you mentioned though (saving up for workshop and college tuition haha, dunno which one is more important :P). But anyways, I read your post a few times and it really helps, so thanks for that. I'll certainly keep your recommendations in mind, you make a lot of good points.

update! ^^; So I had some appointments today but they didn't take very long and I got quite a bit of drawing in again for the hours I had :) *feels quite pleased with herself*.
I told myself I'll start the school assignments on monday, so I have this weekend free for my own stuff, feels rather freeing :lineart:. Now I'll just have to make sure not to keep postponing it haha!

Todays sketches: the gestures, Bridgeman foot studies (really helped!) and a bad SP :P

Great studies, just found out about those Sketchmeets(yep, livin in a cave)
I always wanted to do artschool, for good foundations etc. well it didn´t happen.

I´m basically selfthaught and it would be nice if some of you could check my SB and give me some tips or shout at me...

For now...keep drawingggg

Hey chick!
Those last ones look very loose with pretty confident lines, that's good!
The digi painting (of me) has the right colours and I think it starts to look like me! :) Cool
Oh and I don't know anything about digital painting, but the last 3 are very good (especially because you made them so quickly).

@ ghoulio; hiya :lineart:, are you sure this post isn't supposed to be a reply to 'the netherlands' sketchmeets topic? But anyways, I'll stop by your sketchbook soon ^^
@ Marlisa; hi chicka :P! Thank you thank you :scribble:. There's really not much to know about digital painting: it's a lot easier to get a colour (no mixing involved haha), and you can try out stuff without risking messing everything up (there's the undo button), but the drawing and painting is just as hard (if not harder for me) as traditional painting, just less mess involved, and less time spent mixing paints. If you see a digi to crit on, just think of it as a traditional piece haha!

update!;
The weekend is over.. :( so I'll have to start the school assignment tomorrow, but for now there's this little update ^^ I could've done more, but since I saw today as my free time I'll try not to feel guilty for hanging around on the internets every once in a while haha, there's enough to feel guilty about already. :teeth:

Always inspiring to see someone work this hard. I think you deserve a better result from the werkschouw than the one they've given you now. I'll be watching your SB and maybe offer some 'helpful' critiques for the assignment. Just keep working and you'll get there.
A daily excercise like the posemaniacs thing seems to work wonderfully. Did the 30 sec gestures myself today and it isn't easy! You seem to capture much more in the given time.
So ehh, not much more to say for now, don't let it get to you and stay confident!

See you tomorrow.

hey meis!

if you dont know what to do, if you got no ideas..
then start with a background or something mess around a bit with paint
make something abstract, maybe during that you might get some ideas
or you find some color combinations that you like, wich you can use,
i know the feeling, but try to do something, or to find ideas look up other artist,
listen to music and look for things that might be usefull to you

groetjess!

ow yeh maybe you find this model sites handy, for face training and poses
i always use those when i need a face/pose or something :)

marleen, a crucial, possibly the most IMPORTANT part of figure drawing is getting the gesture and weight correct. i fear all that hard work going into ur posemaniacs studies may be being wasted. it would be much better to find photos of real people and in a few lines try to capture the gesture and areas of weight/tension in the body......without this, any figure drawing whether from observation or imagination will look weak. think to yourself: WHY am i doing this? convincing figures have two essential components: anatomy and gesture/weight/rhythm. posemaniacs, being only small 3d rendered figures, is not good for either, and i personally would only use it as reference while doing an actual illustration

it looks like u are putting in so much work, (putting me to shame ), but hard work is not alone enough to make you good. u need to know what u are trying to learn, and u should know how to approach it.

keep at it :} xxxxx

That's what I call progress. I quickly browsed throughout and it was a treat to see. :)

Sorry, a comment of one of your commenters got me thinking, hope you don't mind I reply to him here:

it would be much better to find photos of real people and in a few lines try to capture the gesture and areas of weight/tension in the body

Don't you need to know about how people distribute weight and tension first? It seems hard to guess what is going on just by looking at a photo without the theory first. Also, if Posemaniacs is bad for these kind of studies, how is it good for reference for a finished picture?

Generally, in the stuff you're copying there, there is a lot more contrast in the photos than in your paintings. Like in the picture of Clo, if you want to bring out those teeth, you have to paint in the drop shadow the teeth are leaving on the tongue and also the two dark spots in the corners of her mouth. Her skin is a lot lighter (because of the over exposure). Same thing with the next image of the landscape. The foreground is a lot darker. If you're doing these exercices I'd suggest taking some more time getting everything more correct, focus on color, shapes, and edges, leave out the detail.
I've done a lot of these, they really help

That reminds me of something someone else said to me about the time I worked on it I always add that time into a post.
That got me thinkin..... Why do they do that anyways?
Maybe because they're pushed by other people to work as quickly as they can, so that you focus more on the main lines and stuff.
I guess they think you'll be a better artist as you work that way?
The lower the time you worked on it, the better artist you are?
*If you work some brilliant thing out in 30 mins, you are an amazing artist! But if you did that in 3 hours, you are not that great anymore, that's nothing exceptional*

Oke, it's just guessing, but maybe you have that in mind too; working quick is better. I know my teachers at school say that to me all the time, so that's how I think too.

When you have the time to work some piece out, I think it's waaay better to focus on the details, instead of the main gesture again. Because you (you = people who do that) already do that all the time. Do you know what I mean?
I notice this by myself too, it's no critique to you :^^:, just some brainstorming... I just hope you understand what I mean (could explain it in dutch :P )

of course, ur making a good point but i didn't even say that she shouldnt be looking at theory (and for the record marleen, bear that in mind).
im just of the opinion that posemaniacs is very limited. its good reference if u wanna know what a certain pose looks like from a certain angle especially with foreshortening. but u gota rememer the muscles and details are only textures on a simple 3d surface, u cant see how they overlap and intersect...which is a very important part of knowing how the body works. and being 3d models created by somebody else, studying mostly from them means u are potentially being limited by that artist's capabilities of rendering

rhythm/gesture/weight > anatomy. posemaniacs is good for anatomy but a common mistake students make around here is that they work on anatomy without realising that anatomy in a drawing should be there to reinforce gesture and weight, which are a lot more important in making a convincing character. a rhythmic figure with some anatomical abberations is a lot more enjoyable than an stiff but anatomically correct figure

my concern is just that, ive seen many people on this forum do countless posemaniacs or similar studies....ive done it myself. but often nothing is learned

Leonor
June 10th, 2009, 03:28 AM
Thanks for explaining, sleep.
Can you recommend good books where I can learn the rhythm/gesture/weight ideas? Because I have no clue in theory what I should be looking for. When I was doing the Loomis manikin I didn't see the weight distribution as he was seeing it. My understanding of human physics is rather lacking.

(Sorry for the side conversation, Noë)

leonor:the side conversation can be excused cos its for marleens benefit as well as yours...(and we're bumping her thread.) ive only recently realised the importance of weight and gesture despite having been a confident life drawing skills for years, which is why im emphasizing it so much. it was like the missing link

as far as books go, who needs em? this helped me a lot: http://analyticalfiguresp08.blogspot.com/2008/03/week-2-silhouette-design-demo.html
a big part of it was also just looking at drawings that worked, and using my own body for reference. maybe get a few ref photos and draw a line through each one vertically to get urself used to the concept of a center of gravity. the key to human physics is that there are none....treat a human like u would a vase. if one side is much bigger than the other, it'll fall over (or itll be lopsided and the legs will have to compensate for extra weight) if u raise one shoulder to the left and forward, the other one will go to the right and backward. the human body always balances itself out, its a perfect machine

hey noe.. thanks for that reply

I fully agree..
I slack far too much drawing from reference etc..
slowly doing more and more:)

you do great work here!
the only crit i would have for you is to try to work longer on your works..

Don't decide they are finished before every single line and shade is in balance with each other and nothing feels out of place.
to connect everything and make the piece as much 'ONE' as possible..

I think this is the effort about my work that attracts you and what you call awesomeness.
Anatomy and proportions, light etc are very very important to sell a realistic view of a subject.

But art in its core is much more abstract I feel.
When you manage to combine both you will have hit the goldmine I think..

an interesting side note is that if you manage to capture light and proportions etc etc to perfection.. balance will arise from this it seems.. but i find it very very hard to do so.. so instead I focus on making a nice picture that feels like the real thing. but use visual tricks to make it work... instead of following all the rules of realism.
but..
all roads lead to rome as they say..

keep it up!!
see you on the other side ^^

@ Marlisa: Hiya!! Yes the 3D bug is mostly from cardboard paper stuff, with some steel wire glued onto it :P The Anna Karenina stuff is for our typography assignment. It has to do with t-shirts: creating a t-shirt for the main person in the book you last read. And the title of the book should be text in the t-shirt. My book was "sword of truth" by Terry Goodkind (which is the t-shirt with all the wires, which you liked), and now I have to make a more commercial t-shirt for the book of a classmate (Aart Jan), who read Anna Karenina.. So that's what I'm still working on.

new stuffs; it's assesment time again, so for most subjects I have to put my work on a wall and have a quick talk about it with the teacher.
Here's my work for two subjects; first typography, then ABO (where I've been working with flowers on a copy machine, and cutting and glueing the result).. Oh and in between a few pictures of a sculpture for myself I've been playing with.. Still not too happy about that.

Hi People :teeth:
I got myself a pause in my studies (studiestop), and am going to take it slow this year to start the second year of illustration again next year. There's so much I want to do that I didn't have time for.
I recently moved to Utrecht to a nice student room, I started playing the piano again, I started working on my website making skills and just a few days ago I felt the need to draw a little something again, finally.. :scribble:

It's not much yet but there will be more. In one or two weeks I'll be going to my workspace at school again too :)

First of all; I went to a stopmotion animation workshop yesterday and had some fun. It's not supposed to be good or anything, was just cool to do ^^

Also a few quick drawings:

@ paperX; hiya! Yeah, I'm taking it a little slow though, much to do, and I don't want to force myself to do anything at the moment ^^ but I'm sure the productiveness will return sometime soon.
---

I've been moving my stuff, packing and unpacking boxes, putting together furniture, all that sort of stuff. Now I'm mostly unpacked in the new room, but I don't have a computer (or printer/scanner thing) yet, so that'll have to happen soon ^^. Next week is very busy for me (meeting some friends and working a few days) but if I have time left I might just squeeze in a bit of drawing, maybe an address change card is a good idea :P

-small updatesie, just quick things from the head from train rides (and yes, not drawing from ref makes me realize how much I suck at not drawing from reference :bashful:)

added some colour, not done yet :P

Hey!
I instantly had an idea for the address change card, a little alice in wonderland thing :P so I drew a sketch

887792

if anyone feels up to it, a paintover for the arms especially (and legs, and everything else :P) would be greatly appreciated ^^
This is all from mind tho, I'll take some reference pictures soon.

bye!
Marleen.

I like the address change card, i think anyone who's ever lived in cramped spaces can relate! ;)

I did a little paintover (kind of went to town and wrecked your drawing, more like..)

I think the pose and the body language could be adjusted to get the idea across better. Outstretched arms make it seem more like there's lot of space, this is also empasized by the outstretched neck and straight back. The figure is also very flat, since you see everything straight on, there's no overlap, no action along the z axis.

So what i changed was arching the back a little more, lowering the head to come down in front of the shoulders, thus creating overlap and more sense of 3 dimentions. The lowered head also help show that the roof is low, by using body language. Hand was moved closer to the center of gravity to help support the weight of the head, and pointed forward to get more z axis action going on. Same with her leg, pointed it towards the camera, and pulled it a little up against her body, again to hint at the fact that there's not enough space to stretch her legs out. Same with the bent arm touching the ceiling, it helps sell the claustrophobic feeling, and get some action into the arm, straight arms tend to be boring.

Lastly i'd suggest cropping the composition more from the sides (thats what the red arrows were for :P) to further enhance the claustrophobic feel of the image.

I am of course making the assumption that i'm interpreting your idea about living in small conditions right. ^^ Shoot yourself some reference and everything i've mentioned should become clearer. And take what i said with a grain of salt, its just my opinions, not cold hard fact. ;)

Best of luck with the progress!

Nice SB and many mediums, you're using (sculpting, t-shirts, drawing...) Keep on posting. Very inspirational!

Nice updates with the figures, Noë. I'd say focus on the wedging shapes more, as doing so will provide better forms on you drawings. Don't be afraid to just slam shapes in there, use it to see whats going on. The typography work is nice, I've never gotten into it myself, maybe someday.

Wow! Your posemaniacs studies are great! I guess I have to try some short pose drawings, too.
