Jens
June 13th, 2005, 03:00 PM
Thx a lot for all the replies!

Carnifex: Yea I'm very much aware of my disability to draw bodies. This is the very bad result of a stupid habit I used to have. When I started drawing I just drew heads over and over, neglecting anatomy and poses. I'm trying to work one this. I got a different sketchbook where I practice these kinds of things. I've been getting good results lately, when I look back a month ago. But still a lightyear to go.

Some random stuff.

Hey your drawings are looking pretty good, I especially liked two of your creatures the first one on the right in the first post and the bird head thingy. Really imaginative, is the girl who's sitting down with her hand near her face with blood coming out from her knees hand ment to be so big? Good posts especially the rendering :)

metroeast, thx

Sems, well I had so much problems with that hands I decided to keep it like that, even though it's a bit too big.

OleOlsen, cool thx

Faust, thank you!

Farvus, yea i was thinking of latern fish that like in the deepsea :)

Cypher, here's the update, a bit small but still an update

Kaoki, thanks a lot

flatliner, that's good that you want to draw now :)

Keep it up!

Jens
June 18th, 2005, 02:26 PM
here you go ConquerorBen, i'm gonna try doing more of these everyday.

davi, thx for replying man :)
I think the outline happens when I first plan to do heavier shading, so the line is the part where the shadow will be the darkest, and then decide I'm finished with the sketch. The shadow on that one became even darker cause i messed with the levels.

final, no need to be jealous :)

deez, thx, here you go a new sketch :)

drawing full bodies is harder than I thought, must practice more!!!

June 18th, 2005, 02:42 PM
I could really learn value from your awesome render studies, simply amazing stuff you got going on here. yeah I must agree drawing the figure completely is pretty challenging, but with practice anything can happen, thats what I've been working on lately (human anatomy). Great work and keep posting. :}

Crash
June 18th, 2005, 02:49 PM
yeah full bodies is a bitch to draw, ive tried to use a manikin with mixed results but the one thing that matter and pays of is....practice.

Oh and life drawing mixed with anatomy studies.

I really like the way you use light in some of your drawing but be carefull so you dont end up like me, adding to much shadows.

i really like the last not upside down full body shot, has alot of "jens" in it.

Jens
June 20th, 2005, 03:14 PM
crash, thx for the nice comments! you are right, and I will keep going, nothing is stopping me, except mayby my lazy 2nd personality

darktwin, exactly you have to keep going every day

Mmh drawing has been a bit though on me today so I'll present you with little new stuff and some older stuff I can still look at.

new stuff

http://users.pandora.be/NO1/Jens/sketch008.jpg
a detail for the head for the people who were intrested in the rendering
http://users.pandora.be/NO1/Jens/sketch008b.jpg
i don't care a lot for this one, the rendering has to much visible strokes, not placed on the right places. i'm looking for more solid strokes, closer togheter, seperate strokes only visible at a few places. i think I made this guy's shoulder too narrow, you tell me what you think.

ender, i don't think you're totally right about that they're cartoonish, but i understand what you mean. I'm trying to evolve to a bit more realistic style but I don't want to end up with boring standard faces.

thx a lot btw

kapturowski, thank you, i checked your sketchbook as well :)

Fellah, thx for your comment, it means a lot to me

Robulus, it's cool when someone replies who you've been following through every update, thank you :)

Something great happened today, I passed my year at school. Both theory and atelier!!!
So now I got 3 months of vacation without worrying about anything, except drawing mayby.

I tried something yesterday and it was to just paint (in painter) the shapes of the muscles with using a extremely small pallete (2-3 colors) just to understand the shapes. I think i learned alot when it comes to volume and understanding it so i can work faster with my pencil renderings, the faster i (you) work the more fun it gets since you can start and finish with one and start another idea and play with them.

With the torso you Could (im not saying you should) try to just draw a box, make some weird angles on the box and then draw the chest in the box with the same angle, helped me alot understanding it.

Just my 2 unwanted euros :P

crash, yea those are good excercices, not sure if i'm gonna do that second one, but i'll keep the box in the back of my mind when drawing

final, i'll try to not waste the vacation

redhelert, thank you, i'm attending the Illustration course, in St Lucas in Antwerp

zao, thank you very much :)

Badger,
Yea I try a lot of different stuff, if you go to the guest self portrait forum you can see the selfportraits i do. I try to do a different technique every day. I draw a lot in pen when i'm doing life drawing. In school I'm doing a lot of charcoal drawings. Then I got a brown paper sketchbook where I try a thinned down version of the el coro technique. And once in a while I take out the acrylics to do some painting.

I use a A5 sized sketchbook (8X5 inches i think)

here's yesterday's and today's crap :)

jens, baby, sometimes ya scare the pants off a me. In a good way.

I havea little crit though, alot of your faces are very unsymetrical, try and watch the center axis that goes down the middle of the face more, to line it up straight :)

Jens
August 20th, 2005, 01:30 PM
red_rook: you're probably right, i've always had problems with symmetry, time to do something about it

tabris: yea, i do a lot of selfportraits where i experiment with different ways of hatching and shading, it really helps. Also drawing with inkpens helps you make better strokes.

mentler: absolutely, it even has that effect of self isolation that harcore drug addicts have ;)

berf: thank you, noses are usually related to my own nose (so i have been told), which is a very prominent feature on my head :)

hurricane: thx a lot man, your comments mean a lot to me

Hello, Jens. Went two times through your thread. Very, very interesting. Your faces. They are so involving, they grab an attention of passerby and I want to stay and speak with them for hours. They already have proper expressions before I even say anything. I don't understand how you do this, do you add something from your feeling to this faces? very talented work.
And I like your nudes and neck studies, very useful to me.
You have these drawings of some musician, I know that it's not from movie 'Ray' (about a life of Ray Charles). But at first I thought maybe it is. I drew him when watched the movie. Well, thank you for your work, I enjoyed a lot.

chris, thx!

sve, you gave me the nicest reply I ever got.. I thank you a lot
About feeling added.. I imagine what the person's thinking I think about the expression, I sometimes act out his expression. I guess it also works giving a character a story, but I don't do that a lot. There is also something very specific I look for in my faces. I can't really explain it, it's just something I see on the streets or in the bus. Just how real people look in a certain angle. Take the blue ballpoint girl with the red.. it was a normal girl, not very pretty but only in the angle I drew her she had that something I like. Also with the last ink sketch. The head of the guy. The drawing is sorta what I saw in his face in a flash

Form, I will be doing them several times a week thx man I also like the two sketches you pointed out

I like your rendering, when you're not rushing it (like the head muscle study). I also like your hand studies, but I noticed that you (like me!!!) have a tendacy to not know what to do with the hands when you do a full body drawing. Practice 'acting' with your hands more. All in all, good work.

ps, tell your friend Robbe he needs to pull up his pants or they'll get pulled down all the way someday! :D

Hello, Jens. I'm very fond of your work. I like these thoughts and quiet calm mood that I always have after observing your art. Your work is effecting me, my state of mind. I like your new sketches, and especially I'm impressed with the face of a boy on the bottom of the random page and the face of Robbe. I took him with me.

Really nice stuff in here, I like the variety of work and mediums you got going on. The hands are looking sweet, makes me want to go draw some of those :) Your rendering is good as ever too. I agree with one of hurricane's earlier crits we need to see some more bodies -- one thing I like to practice is just drawing really quick getures from my head, in whatever poses I can come up with.. try all kinds of angles, twists and whatever. Dont sweat getting them right too much, just do a lot of them really fast.. it will help you see what areas you need to work on and also help you put more expression into your stuff.

Jens, I like coming to your book. Never bored :). There are so much interesting work. I like all update, but the most appealing to me are portrait of Bush (I knew it's him right away. Why did you decide to draw him? an interesting material? >:D); puppies (lovely), the pen hand, squidy Russian nurse, a room with floor (?) lamp (Oh, it has so much of a cozy, homey emotion, you need to do a bigger painting or a drawing of it, it has so many details and features of the person who lives there :)), all the sketches-portraits. Thank you so much, I enjoyed, as always

sve,

The portrait was done for school. We have to make a illustrated card every week about something that happened in the news or to you personally. So I took an article about Bush saying that god told him to attack Iraq etc. The one i posted here isn't the finished one.

The room is in a second hand (no more like fifth hand) store. You can buy all kind of junk for a low price :), clothes, toys, bycicles, chiars, closets etc.
The place is extremely messy :)

Thx for commenting!!

gloom, thank you :)

some_guy, yea i do these things but i'm too embarrased to show :)
I wish i could get my bodies to the level i draw the hands in

bizarre, thx man, come back to europe :)

seth, monkey, slash, merci beaucoup!!

can't post without some work :)
A portrait in gouache, no underdrawing, a5 size. Took about 1,5-2 hours.
I think gouache is a powerfull media once you start controlling it.

sve
October 15th, 2005, 12:56 PM
Funny, funny! Even hilarious! :) But admit it, the second hand store means that this things were personalized, loved and bought with something in mind. I think I was not that far in my guess :) . Although I did blush a little :).
Portrait is great, a lot of personality in features and these brushstrokes. The portrait is consistent with what I feel about your art.

amazing sketchbook and incredible evolution mate. my favourite is the guy at the bottom of: sketchpage57.jpg .

One thing i notice is that your shading work is more evolved than your contour lines. by shading your drawings you show a confidence of light/shadow that doesnt exist as strongly in your silhouette lines. nothing good or bad on that.. just something i noticed.

Keep it up mate!! you are bookmarked here already:)

tie, i don't really do a lot of finished stuff yet...

marioucci, yea you're right, the lines are usually a base for the shading so i shold work on line quality if i'm not going to shade it

jtheanswer, it's a hb mech pencil for the renderings, for the hands or life drawings it's colored pencil or a 2b-4b wooden pencil
