Holy fuckin chaos, you crammed a lot in on these peices of paper. Something about the 3rd to last peice that I really like a lot. Its like there is a story going on in each peice. I find it very intriguing. They all have a very mysterious feel to them. I would almost like to see them larger, with more details, but stay in black and white ink.

Well if it is'nt my fellow TD competitor :teeth:
I thought you quited the idea of a sketchbook! Well good to see you have a new one :yayca:
You've got some nice ideas going there, and pretty vivid sketches. Now I'm wondering how a more "finished" sketch would look like. Looking forward to your next update.

Hello there. You cram a whole lot of stuff on each page.. And what is that pink stuff you use to color them? Is it marker?
You seem to have a pretty good sense of form but your linework could be better. You seem to have a slight problem deciding where the lines should go which gives your drawing a very big sketchy look, sometimes it is difficult to see what things are and seperate them...
But hey, that comes with practice... Show us more progress stuff and we´ll show you how usefull sketchbooks can be.

yo gingoloco, good to see you giving the sketchbooks another try. Hope you don't mind me posting a little feedback here.
you got lotsa energy going on here, I like your linework the most when you switch to that weird quasi-cross hatching style that you use in the self portrait (and also in the little corner drawing of the guy with the gasmask thingy). I can see that linework technique being refined into a really definitive, and cool, look for your work.
Anyway, keep it up dude.

Smitherines - Thanks for your comments man :) Yes, initially i usually tried to draw one or 2 "complex" drawings in one page, but then i said FUCK IT! it was a waste of space and ideas.... now i just draw whatever my mind is coming up with.... and draw and draw some more :} And yes, black and white kicks ass... i'll stay with it at least through this summer... I'm going to make a comic for this contest here in my country, and I'll be practicing and trying different styles that can possibly go with it.... but the black and white will be defenite... be tuned for an excercise comic I'm making! i'll show you progress soon....
IceMoon - thanks man! i'll try to post as often as possible... the COOL stuff... and about finished pieces... i'll try to concentrate on one or two tomorrow, so you guys can give some crits.
glikster - thanks for the comment! i would consider that I do permanent warm ups. which pisses me off, as I told IceMoon above, I'll try to come up with some better sketches to show off... not just warm ups.
talmir - teh ENEMEH! nah just kidding man :bashful: thanks for posting the comment! that "pink" stuff are the warm gray shades of prisma color markers. they kick ass! at least i love them for sketches... allows me to give them a quick tone to my stuff, without making much ink lines. about my linework, yes it can be MUCH better... i hope that i gain better control and "finnesse" over them as soon as possible... and yes sketchbooks are usefull. a very bad experience with them in the past though... and it's a hell-lot-of-work!

- first my updated last page i showed you yesterday. now it's finished... it's pretty much a big pile of you know what... but i'm kinda proud of the bigger sketch in the bottom section... i'll see if i start some work on the "grand" version tomorrow... sketches, but more complete ones:

Well, as a member of your Sketchbook Support Group now...
Nice new SP and nice portrait of your dad.
I'm the getting the impression looking in here, though, that you do the same thing I do sometimes: when you're not sure about something you just throw a million lines at it and hope it goes away. I keep doing that and I'm trying to get away from it. Like the head of that guy holding the sword and on some of the small sketches.
Great work! Keep posting!!

Hi ,
Very promising what i see here...
i like your line quality and those pages filled with little sketches are fun!
I would like to see you do a fully rendered drawing , see how that turns out.
That last SP reminds me of Snake of Metal gear solid somehow, hehe :)
little crit : although those filled pages are fun to look at. I somehow loose track. There isn't a place for my eye to rest on those. Crowded drawings are tricky cause you've got to somehow get a focal point in there and its often difficult not to loose your composition.
I would also vary the line weight more and nock in some values and shadows here and there.. Maybe even render out one of the figures more then the other to get the attention, --- focal point :)
Anyway , good stuff , keep em coming

This isgood gringo, quite unique style for sure. especially if u develop it somewhat. Similar to a german artist called Egon shciele, you might look up his work you might like it.
Some of your faces come out like that last SP, quite expressive, they look nice. Would be nice for some of that in more of your normal drawings.
I think one thing is to work on anatomy somewhat, in places you can see where its off. Studies in your style should look interesting, in terms of whole body shots.
Good luck, and keep it up dude... Ill be here pestering you if u dont :D.

jorge2k - you suck (he's a personal friend of mine). he has this "i know everything" attitude... :D
evidence - thanks for the comment man! you're sketchbook is great too! i hope i can post something finished soon.
glikster - thanks for the comment! i tend to like to draw "dirty" stuff, hence all that unnecssary linework in most of my stuff. Still i like it :)
Art_Addict - thanks for your focal point tip man! i'll really like to keep that in mind from now on. and thx for the solid snake comparision :bashful:
PHATandy- hey man thanks for your comment. and thanks for naming Egon Schielle! I checked out his works and they turn out to be a style i most definetly like! I promise i'll do some anatomy studies this week.... to show off.
Ivan.R - dont get discouarged man! the pen is as easy to start with as pencil. you've got to be more careful though.. or else the drawing could get very fucked up. thanks for your comment! and by the way, I'll try to post as "daily" as possible.... sometimes i really just dont have time to scan and post em :( but i assure you i draw everyday.

11th June Update
well fellas, sorry for not daily posting. I just suck at that. Well anyways, let me tell you what i have been doing for the last days. First of all, my relationship with my girl just turned 11 months old, so I had to prepare something special. I spent too days making a nice little present for her, with some special illustrations included. 4 of them. they are simple, but took some time to make.... and that was not the only gift i "made", so you get the point. so that's the main reason of not having posted much. I would've posted them, but she has them now :p so duh. I also filled a page in a bus, but as the bus is very "shaky", you could guess the results of it... a complete shit fest. The only thing that I will show you is the last page i did today of the sketchbook, featuring a selfportrait of mine... the worst part of it, is that it turned out very good :$ (but i dont like it, cause i look too gay in it) so i'm fucked! no more gay portraits EVER!.

Yeah, I know how much time it takes scanning, optimizing, uploading, and posting. :dead: It sometimes takes more time than drawing a new picture.
The men on the lower part of the paper looks quite well drawn. Once again I admire your work with the pen. But the face of the upper part looks a bit strange to me, I find that the mouth is not drawn quite correctly. You have drawn it in a quite extreme perspective that does not corresponds to the face. The hair does not look to me like hair at all. It seems to me like something flat put on top of the face. Maybe you should have used more curvy lines to achieve more believability.
You should give me some tips how to use the inky pen so well as you do!
I hope that you will spare some time to post some new drawings.
Art_Addict
June 12th, 2005, 09:24 AM
I don't agree with Ivan altough the drawing is still up for improvement i think.
The hair is a nice touch. I doesn't look like real hair , no , but it's obviously done this way on purpose. So illustration wise i think it looks good. :) The focal point now are the eyes of the top head, no doubt about that. Then your eye wonders of to the lower right face and then to the lower left of the drawing . So it's well readable now, good composition. Much better then the ones above i think.
The one thing i don't like is how you shadowed the above face. Not so subtle, man. For inspiration i suggest you look at pen drawings from El Coro. Those are the bomb!!
I'm gonna try those inks and pens you suggested too.. :)
Anyway, nice drawing

cool sp...gives a good sens of character... I don't think the radial hatching in the hair works too well, but that's just my take. I like how you cram an insane amount of stuff into every page.
Not sure why I thought of this, but you might get a kick out of James Callahan's inkwork. It's tough to find his stuff, but if you go to http://www.oddgodpress.com/ and click on the strange detective tales comic, you can see a couple of his pages. Lots and Lots of detail fun.

Alisa - Thanks for your comment!
Ivan.R - Welll, the mouth looks odd, cause I put it in a strange position, leaning towards the right part of my face.... i rather feel it's donde decently... but anyways, the goal would be that nobody who sees it, it will look well to all those minds. I need to practice more :p Thanks for keeping on posting.
Art_Addict - I was trying to go for a normal approach in shadowing. with the ink pens it resulted difficult. I'll keep practing more to see which method is better for me at the end. Thanks for posting! By the way, i tried to check out Coro's inks, but couldn't find any.... if you can link me to the thread.. I would appreciate dearly.

Cool stuff again man, i think you need to work on the actual human face some more, as in skull/planes of the face, so when you do your facial drawings (which you do alot of) you can atleast make them correct anatomically. Also with some of the rendering, try to spend more time working the lines for the values in, not just scribbling.
Like in your SB, i thought was very good but the light rendering on the face was to muhc scribbling and took something out.
Good work tthough keep it up.
Andy.

I can see some very nicely drawn tiny details. In contrast the 3 big heads are drawn very loosely and there are no details on them. Maybe you want to pop them up but I think that the consistency of the drawing is lost that way.

The first stage of the gladiator looks very well, but I don't like so much the finished one. I think that too many details are lost in the final version. I would never be able to recognise the sword without looking the first picture. How did you managed to draw the gladiator, did you draw it lightly with a pencil or did you draw it directly with the pen?

Great updates! The women show a lot of promise.
The TD pic looks great in the finished piece, but the linework shows a lot of anatomy issues. The biggest problem is that he doesn't have a ribcage, but that's comflaged my the ink wash, but his legs are still too short. Also the wash hides the claw leg.
Great concept, design and style!

Ivan.R I drew it with a pencil first, lots of scribbling and shit, to get the main forms, then, i started using the ink pens to define the main lines, then i got a "thinner" ink pen and started drawing the more finite details. Before I screwed it all up with the ink brush though, i scanned it and corrected some stuff in photoshop, at 200 dpi. it helped a lot in the end. I just had to superimpose the final scan (the 2nd phase image) and go erasing and correcting some parts. In the end, I still like the piece :) thanks for your comments man!

Woo-hoo!! About time!! I felt very abandoned for a while there...
Those new studies and the SP are GREAT!! Are some of the torsos too long? I'm not good enough with anatomy to say for sure, but it seems like they are.
And I LOVE the Sandman comics. I have all of the Trade Paperbacks stored at my mother's house, but she just called and told me that a sink pipe burst and the ceiling fell in... I hope they're still all right...
He's got a big-ass hand there, actually I think the problem is that you drew his body from above, but the arm and hand seem to be on a different perspective...

It's good to see you doing those hogarth studies. The way I've been taught to draw bodies is to start with a skeleton, rough in the ribcage, pelvis, spine and limbs then add flesh and stir. Try finding the skeletons in those hogarth studies first, then use your ref to help you flesh it out, keeping in mind the 3d forms. Sketching with felt tip pen(?) will make your rough skeletons more obvious so you might want to use pencil or ball point when doing that, that way you can keep your construction lines light.
Oh yeah, and if you don't post soon i'll come along with some plastic tubing and take a leaf out of your book.

tensai - thanks for your comments. it's a real honor to have them, really. i love your city compositions, you're projects are absolutely gorgeous.
glikster - thanks my man for your kind words. kick ass.
Recursive_End - heya man, thanks for your comments. Yes I've heard a lot of Quino, and maybe I can say he has been an inspiration since my earlier highschool days? I just love his storytelling abilities, and his inking and character design style is just, his. Mafalda and his other own stuff just is top notch. And since I read it in the newspapers nearly every day then, i think I like it. And up & discovering I'll go!
Lukavi - wow man, i never expected your reply. It's an honor aswell to hear from you. The text incorporation is more like certain design elements I try to blend in with the illustration. Just for fun & practice.

Well, about the update. Here are some pastel stuff I have been doing. The portraits are oldish stuff, each one of them sizing A3 or bigger on average. These portraits are from the last year.

Now comes some 2006 stuff.
This is a design illustrationI submitted to a contest, it's quite big (60x99cm) on original scale. I was finalist in the contest (honor mention). The piece is entitled "Ángel de la Guard". Translated it means "Guardian Angel":
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v197/GriNGoLoCO/conceptart/angeldelaguarda.jpg
Now here comes stuff I did in the last week since posting: Here is an illustration piece I have called "KIDDY PLANE". It's also like 60 x 99 cm in dimensions, and I finished it in about 8 hours straight working. It has pastel & acrylics painted on it: Here is a progress sequence you can check out:

Now here comes a self portrait I did yesterday. I did it with inks & brush (markers) The actual size is 65x50 cm or so. I really like how it turned out. Hope you guys like it aswell:

Gringo a lot of very nice work in that last post. I like your ink work a lot it's very expressive. The color work is also very well done but "Angel de la Guard" just stands out as very different from the rest. It has a very graphic appeal to it.
Solid work keep at it.

A lot of your human figures and look a bit off, not as good as certain others demonstrate you're capable of. Some of them are pretty obviously intentionally off, but sometimes I can't tell whether you're being disturbing or lazy :)
Great work on the whole, though.

that last illustration kicks ass!! The face doesnt quite keep up with the rest of it though.. Maybe you could add some wrinkles and def. work on the connection between head and hand- right now it looks a bit too hard..
Personally I dont like heads without necks- but thisone would look weird with just a neck.. So maybe you could add a whole body in an extreme perspective?! Just a thought I had- looking at it

MattSmith - Yeah, the font was merely a small addition that was required, do to the nature of the college assignment. Most Weiner Werkstatte commercial illustration had some kind of typographic treatment in it... that was, well, cramped. thanks for the pointers though!

sorry for not updating soon enough, i'm just lazy. been doing a lot of drawing lately! sketches sketches & more sketches.. all pen stuff. Recently participated in a national college art contest, with some kick ass prizes. I went to the "drawing" category. I will know if I win something or not on June14... I'll keep you informed. What was kick ass about this contest, is that they would take you to a studio, and you would have to draw your piece there---Here is the drawing I submitted (with me in it!) the photo doesn't do it justice, lots of details and colors can't be seen.... at least you can see the dimensions & size of it!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v197/GriNGoLoCO/conceptart/estirpeazr.jpg
Here now is another drawing i did after i finished this one.... this is the initial stages... now it has more shit in it, and is as big as the last one. Still have to work on it though.. I'll post something soon enough so you can check it out.

Yellow and purple work well together, and your drawing style is interesting but could use some tweaking. For example this one would benefit from more angular lines. All the lines tend to follow a wiggly curve path, this has a spagetti like effect. Solidity is lost and therfore believability. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v197/GriNGoLoCO/conceptart/Poster1FLATtrue.jpg
However this one has a similar look but is better, http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v197/GriNGoLoCO/conceptart/gringo1POLSKAflat.jpgin this case I think it's because of how the shade lines and wrinkles wrap the forms and emphasize their 3 dimensionality. What I like about your line work is that it has a sort of trippy dreamlike effect, but the form can feel a bit weak, this is because of the lack angular lines. Adding angular lines can strengthen your drawings, look at art noveau for example. Though they tend to use curves there are still a lot of angles and corners everywhere, look at Alphonse Mucha, Winsor McCay, Jules Cherot.

anatomy shit... well, i realized i suck in a lot of areas, and one of them is anatomy, so i decided to work at least during summer, in my own private time, as much as I can in that. As part of this effort, I have also subscribed to the CGtalk Anatomy forums (as they have better info on this topic there), I'll be posting studies there aswell. Anyways, here's some of the first batch of stuff I have come up with. First 3 are 10-13 minute sketches.

Hello, here is are some of the black & white stuff I have done recently. Medium: Edding 1880 drawliner, 0.3; 0.5: 0.7. On white A4 size normal bond paper (my SB). 1 is my capoeira instructor. 2-3 are studies of the work of ERTE, which is an amazing 1930's artist (check him out!).. 4 is one of my SB's pages. 5 is my old studio (right now i changed to a new one). 6 is a head study (for rebekka of CGtalk 50 heads in a month activity. There are 3 heads in this painting, so i had a fine time studying it The other 2 can be found in the twelfth image of this post.. 7-11 are real life stuff, i'm going to a disabled persons center to help out a bit, and sometimes I have time to draw. I was trying to explore the lines, using as few as possible. As the people in this place (physical therapy area) moved a lot, I tried to be quick as possible. Most of these drawings took 5-10 minutes each. Anatomy is wrong most of the time, but I rather think I captured the mood of the place well. Anways that's it for now! Until next time.....

Hi, just returning your comment on my sketchbook. I enjoy your bold colour and typography sense and your delicious hatching style. Definite improvement throughout the course of this SB. Some of your eyes are out of alignment with each other however in some cases such as 'leighton1j' it looks quirky and cool.
Your gods at war entry was intriguing. I love the atmospheric ambience but I'm stumped as to the relative size of the deity and whether what i assume are stone knives are heading towards him or away (I assume away). Pointing his head in the direction he is attacking and possibly casting a shadow onto the temple would probably have helped a lot.

Thanks for the input guys, well recieved specially from you Snarfevs. I'll try to get all your pointers to thought for round 2.
In the meantime, here comes a BEARDSLEY inspired drawing I just made. It's a design I came up for a friend, who's filming a short movie called "The Celebration"... if yo understand BEARDSLEY's stuff, then you get the mood of the film. Pure decadence. From conceptualization, research and this final inking, it has taken me about 4 hours to do. Damn long.

Ok here, is the comp study I decided to go for,and below is the actual progress. I'm quite unsatisfied with the tube thing on the wall, so that most possibly will change later. I still have a couple of pigeons to do, and add some finishing touches. Just for the note, this thing is being painted in A3 size, 300 dpi. About other things, yesterday I submitted my God of War Entry Round 2... I'll post it here once JLAlfaro creates the entry thread. And I have to do about 5-10 illos this week. Hey man thanks a lto for the comment in my SB! Really appreciate it. That Puppeteer is really nice, only thing I dont like as much as the rest of it is her foot. Thanks for your tip Hurricane! I'll think about interaction more frequently, at least when illustrating people or characters. Sarcophagus, yes I know the foot stinks but it mostly due to my hard time in foot anatomy. Just need to practice and study it more. My next big illo will be better of course ;) & I'm glad you liked my portfolio! For the moment I leave you with some flower studies I made with painter/photoshop combo... with some flickr refs.

Im really enjoying that last paint, it has a macbre feel to it, a totally cool mood.Nice detail on the faces also, althoughthe one on the left could do with a bit of tightening up.
Also Im loving your colour studies with the clouds, very nice, fresh.
The beardsley pience up the top could be worked on a bit particullaly the line-thickness, but the characters are quite like his. You've probably finnished working that one anyway.
Well keep it uP!

ham-e thanks for your comments bro!. i like to practice "traditional" digis as well more experimental pieces... as more as I get to learn from both types of illustrations/paintings, the more I grow art-wise. You'll be see'ing a lot of both anyways, so it's better for all of us :)
Sybo thanks man! you got the mood alright. about the left face, i was also thinking it should be more realistic, but I then kinda liked the distorted feel it has to it.
for the moment, here is some abstract shape experimentation i did using zbrush... which i recommend everyone to get! the software's brush engine is just so full of possibilities, it's amazing that we don't have a zbrush subforum in here.

Here are some illustrations from my final project class, to be able to graduate with a Graphic Design major. I designed, illustrated & wrote a book, which chronicles my life since I entered college (which was a theme imposed to us since the beginning). The portraits are of people from college that I met during these times and that in some way have influenced my personal development. The final format is a book of about 80 pages, A4 size, hardback white cover. It turned out excellent, and I will be officially be graduating this June the 2nd.
Here is the title design/illustration, & most of the portraits. Mixed Media, final tinkering done in Photoshop. Actual size (A3), (for possible exhibition purposes):

Jokisalo - thanks man!
long time no see... to begin, i have finally graduated from college, and have a BA in Graphic Deisgn, with some minors in Illustration and Fine Arts. Tomorrow I start work at an ad agency, hopefully with a lot of illustration jobs so I can practice. The past few weeks have been full of work and shit, like going to a Barron Storey seminar here in my hometown (he's a god among illustrators!), drawing in my sb, actually graduating (it's such a fuss in my college), and doing an abstract experimental comic for a contest in about 3 days... this is what I'm going to show you... I made a big image with all the pages so you can get a better reading experience (it's in spanish though, so tough luck!).
About the comic, well the title loosely translate into "The Most Beautiful Dream in the World". It's an actual dream that was written down upon waking up by a friend, called Santiago Soto. I changed the original text a little to make it more suitable for a comic strip. Last week on Monday I designed the layout of the images, and then by wednesday i started working on the illustrations, in a A4 sized format, 300 dpi. I finished by midday on Friday. The media is mixed, basically inks and digital stuff. Please click on the image below so you can see the readable (larger version). This is my first comic attempt and I have to confess that I enjoyed doing it alot.

A couple of hours until now. I can't remember who made the original, but I pretty much liked it the first time I saw it. The main purpose of this copy is to study how the values are working within this composition, and also as an excercise to see if I can find a way to emulte 'real life' textures in Painter. so I expect to have a great time learning on this one.

nice work with the pen and ink sketches, you're getting quite good at shading along the contour of the figure. :)
for the most part it seems like you are doing heavily abstract and/or heavily stylized work, and some of it is really cool. do you intend to do mostly editorial illustration or concept art also? if you want to do concept art, it would be a good idea to do some more representational images that show off concept.

notspecialist- thanks for your compliments! I really don't have a favorite preference in the illustration realm (for me concept art is part of illustration).. i'd really love to do stuff which will be portrayed in any media, and if it has more public viewing it, even better!
Here are some character design teasers for an animation project I'm currently involved in here in my country- hopefully some of these designs will be accepted towards the animation phase: the first one is an ink sketch scanned in and colored in photoshop, the other two are entirely digital: from painter to photoshop. two different styles, two different characters.

August 20th, 2007, 03:36 PM
Hey, Gringo, thx for commenting on my SB.
I like the last character the best, it looks and feels better than the angel, in terms of color, the nuances that break the symmetry, as well as anatomically.
The nose ring is the only thing that bothers me, it sort of blends with the mouth.
With the angel, I think the neck is too long, the wings at an uncomfortable angle/position, and with the simian features of the face.
The inks are very "artsy" but some features are lost, in all the lines (the soldier's hands for example)

now for some work, here are some traditional painting stuff I have been doing in the past two months.. (beware the quality of the photos :( )
the first is the latest one, from sunday: an oil painting, it's the basis for an illustration that I'm thinking of doing about justice. I need it to dry so I can scan it (it's letter sized).
the next is a portrait of my cousin, part of a series of family portraits i'm making. It's a venture into grayscale, high contrast, realistic portrait. I like how it turned out. It's an acrylic, and it must measure something like 50 cm x 40cm
The next is a self portrait where I tried to make an experiment in deconstructing the forms of my face (but retaining the overall likeness of my face). i think i kinda failed in the retaining part, but nonetheless, i like result. It's the same size as the portrait of my cousin. This one is the oldest of the bunch, 2 months old or so.
Finally here comes my self portrait, in the same style as my cousin. I made this before my cousins portrait, and is the first of the series of family portraits I'm currently working on. It's a bit bigger than my cousins portrait, like 70x40cm

I have finally arrived. Sorry for the lack of updates... work has gotten to me. I have updated my blog frequently, and I also built & uploaded my new website/portfolio (check it out at www.franciscogalarraga.com) but CA deserves the same justice so I'm sorry for not posting sooner. Now to the reply your kindness:
- ped454 : thanks man. right now i'm in a project that involves doind different charaacters & poses. I hope I can show it to you once the "NDA" gets "terminated".

- Jonish : Thanks man, you should check out PrometheusANJ's (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=15745) coloring tuts: very simple & good.
- Gustavo Desimone : Gracias hermano! Europeo mi dibujo? es un honor que lo tilden así... pero sinceramente estoy viendo si es que mi dibujo puede ser considerado latino también...
- bakatron : that comparison really made a tear come out from my eye: much thanks bro!... what an honor.
- bengonzalez : gracias hermano, espero seguir mejorando en el futuro..
- Sketch : thanks man, really kind of you to say that. I'm glad you liked the bull a lot... i really didn't think the CA community (at least people who have seen it in this SB) would recieve it well, since it's more of a poster than concept art.
- Mr Mu : thanks bro!

thanks everyone for taking time in giving me your thoughts. :yayca: what a wonderful community...
johanson -well basically, what I have been thinking about doing is trying to work with alternate mediums (at least initially) then what the course recommends (which is charcoal or pencils). I'm going to see if trying to copy the plates with inks or pens will produce the same learning experience. Also, I have this tendency to NOT erase when I make a mistake. I know that's an insult to the ACADEMY tradition that the book tieaches, but personally i like the results. I'm also interested in making the drawings quicker than what's standard. Frankly, my job as a freelancer and other duties will keep me from making one drawing in a timeframe of 2-3 weeks (or more). I'm not saying that's it wrong to make such long studies (if i had the free time, I'd certainly try to draw as patiently as possible), but right now I don't. That's my "alternative". I'll try to do my first plate in this week.
yinteck - thanks, i'l keep posting, specially since DEEP is here :D sounds like a great contest.
Maestro Andres - gracias hermano, muy buena sugerencia sobre intentar usar diferentes colores.. ya voy a conseguirme un esferito rojo o verde para ver que puede salir.

Rock on, I think this will be a good project. Using alternate media should be effective. If anything having to push for the subtlety needed will help get an even finer control of your chosen material. Good stuff. I might disagree with you on the not erasing anything, but that’s just on personal preference. Right now I think I need to erase more. Then again, not ever erasing could over time make someone more efficient at drawing. If you can’t erase then you have to train yourself to get it right the first time.
Sounds like you’re going in for DEEP. It sounds rad. I’m trying to decide if I have the 110% needed to devote to it.
take it easy,
-andrew

johanson - you're right about erasing.. i think eventually i'll have to force myself to do it. right now I'm in 7 saturday painting course, and our instructor was really strict about getting the drawing right. at first it was awkward for me to erase... but then i started to see the useful ness of it.. and then the drawing started to get better! oh well... at least with other mediums I won't erase as much (pens, inks, etc).

about deep i started sketching stuff but got DEEPLY frustrated on my lack of creativity on the subject.. i simply suck at making creatures for the moment.. and the job has been getting in the way, so maybe I'll try to do something for future contests. thanks for passing by bro... the bargues will be coming soon!

I like the ghosts a lot too. Just to throw in an idea, maybe you can have the bodies to be all ghostly while having the face more defined. Of course it is a matter of taste but just an idea :D Looking forward for your painting class project. BTW, that soccer jersey rules!

DEEPLY frustrated. HA, puns! I know what you mean. I bailed on DEEP too. I started to storyboard an intro to the world but then just stopped. Pure laziness I fear.
I dig the PS ghostly people, especially the second one. It looks like their almost made of birds or something. It might be interesting to see a collection of them made from different objects reflecting something about their life/personality. But that’s just me rambling.
Oh, and you should post up what you’re working on in the 7 Saturday painting course.

johanson: hey man, thanks.. about bailing on Deep, last week i decided that i might give it a shot in some areas (more possible character design, industrial design, creature design and most importantly panel design). I got this general idea of a civilization called Abstracts, created, from a deep see mineral with miracoulous and still unkown properties. Way different from my initial frustration sketches: the idea is good (for me anyways), so maybe I will be submitting something after all!. I was kind of inspired from the ghostly people i made in the last post to start writing about this civilization... I have already done a but of sketches and stuff, but i can't find my moleskine to scan them and upload them: one thing is sure, more "ghostly" people will start to arrive soon I hope... i'm kind of concerned about the rules not making abstract figured beings, hopefully my creations won't be as abstract as to earn a disqualification... And the drawing I was making in the photo is from the first day at the painting course!
Now here comes some stuff from the painting course (an underpainting and the initial grayscale "conversion": the last stage which i'm currently repeating since the physical resemblance with the model is WAY off). And next, are my first mudbox sculptures, colored in Photoshop. Mudbox just kicks ass... so expect to see more experimentations using it. thanks for watching people!
GriNGo
June 28th, 2008, 02:28 AM
the updated "grayscale" painting... now it looks much more similar to the model. The next two are some "teasers" for what I'm trying to do for DEEP... later today I'll post a major dump of sketches and ideas of what I have been thinking about my undersea "UTOPIA"...
ICH
June 28th, 2008, 05:38 AM
Man, the "grayscale painting" is becoming great. Last step have a nice "real feeling". I dig the contrast and the intensity of the model's eyes.

Well, I decied to do some pieces (CHOW & POW), on an underwater society I'm calling Abstract Ghosts. Basically, they were once humans, but who shipwrecked in deep seas. By contact with ABSTRACT ( a substance/mineral that essentially alters their physical and mental states to an ethereal almost inmortal, degree), they survived although not as normal human beings. Rarely seen by normal humans, the have become the masters of a once considered iun controllable entity. They don't procreate as normal surface humans do, their existance is basically based on the quantity of people who die for whatever reason at sea. Each person who dies at sea becomes on of them, due to unknown ETHEREAL properties of Abstract.
The first two are CHOW, then come some sketches and finally a POW entry. Not to much, but I liked how they turned out,

You got very good sense for colors, and making a picture from anything.
Sometimes your figures are very fine, but sometimes seems that was hard to create them. Thats just a suggestion, but i think you should practice to draw with less lines sometimes, try to catch to forms to first (i am on that too at now). ;)

master copies are hard work, but I think you can spend more time on them. Really look at the angles and relationships for everthing. On the last one, the values are pretty close, but the basic drawing has a lot of issues, especially in the head. you've squashed it flat horizontally a little bit, and the relationship between the hair ribbon and forhead are reversed. The way I look at it when doing master copies, is they didn't just spend a few hours on it...they went until it was perfect! You can too! hehehe
I wouldn't worry too much about the texture of these copies, I'd focus just on correctness, values and edges. What I like to do is find the largest value shapes and just draw them in, and then refine from big to small :)
keep up the good work dude, studies always pay off with whatever you put into them :D

I really would love to spend lots of time on these, but sometimes work gets in the way, that's why i want to make them short.. like a quickie or something :D But you're right, only trial and error makes you a better draftsmen. From big to small, that's how i work too, but i always try start with a basic underlying drying and start building up the shapes from there.. if i don't make the drawing i tend to make proportions way crazy.
