This may be old news but yesterday I found out that Right Hemisphere is no longer selling "Deep Paint" their 2d painting simulation software. This is not "Deep Paint 3d", the 3d model texturing tool by the same company. I downloaded it yesterday and spent a few hours with it to see how it was. Heres a short mini review:

The first thing I found was that it wouldn't draw when I used my stylus, the docs say it supports tablets but I not only didn't have pressure control, I had nothing at all with the pen... I did some reading and found out that the problem is caused when you are using two monitors. If you can switch to a single monitor the program maps the tablet correctly.

Anyway the fetures of the program fall about midway between Artrage and Painter. It simulates brushes, paper type, and workspace lighting (?!). You can control the color, bumpyness, and shinyness of strokes independently, though not all of these work with all brush 'classes'. There are a lot more options then in Artrage and consiquently the UI is slightly hideous, think of a poorly executed version of 3d Studio Max. One signifigant advantage over Artrage are layers, you can even set layer modes though the controls are hidden in properties under the layer context menu. In the end you get more control then Artrage but not as many features as Painter, also I think the stuff you can come up with using the default settings looks far worse then either of the above. So if you can overcome the wierdness and hidden features I think this could be a usefull tool for people who can afford the real deal.

Also It would be nice if you could vote to have the source released to the public domain. That way development could continue and the program could be improved by the people who use it. I wont go into a OSS rant here but I think everyone would benefit from the source being released.

And here is the link to the download:

they are using download.com to save their bandwidth I guess.

Hope that is helpfull.

Theres to much useless stuff in this program.
To much Impasto effects, to much effect brushes, to much texture brushes and most of all to less painting brushes without effects. (However its freeware so you should try it anyway).

I personal dislike Impasto when painting digital. I don't see the point of 2D Impasto.

Deep Paint is obsolete, that's why.

Painter long ago cornered the 3d paint effect market, and what little bit they left has been taken care of by artrage, and KPT effects.

At one time, I wanted Deep Paint so bad, I'd have chewed my arm off for it. Then I bought KPT 5&6, and then Painter. Now, you couldn't give me Deep Paint.

I doubt any amount of polls will make that code Open Source. Now, some $$$ (probably a LOT of $$$) might be effective, though.
