View Full Version : Ma Cherie Amour *UPDATED*

This is a piece I did a couple weeks ago, and I've just been having a heck of a time getting a decent photo. Its acrylic on board (24"x24"). Sorry about the glare. I put a clear gloss on it when I was done. My girlfriend posed for the refence (thanks Love). This is a piece that has motivated me to move on to oils now, something I have very little experience with. Anyway, here ya go.

Here's a detail of the lips
I did this painting over the span of 3 days. I'm trying to work on as many projects as possible right now, I have a progress shot of another piece called "Grave Robber" I'm about to post in the "works in progress" forum. Tell me what ya think.

man that glare is really annoying.. hard to look at the whole thing with out coming back to it
only crit I can come up with is.. the values on the back of her hand seem a bit flat in the darker area.. it all looks like the same shade of grey no real tonal variation.. .. then it goes back to the rendered fingers.
Im assuming its just the jpeg compression or something.. the real thing propably has subtle shifts..

Bit of advice for photographing paintings, your best bet is to sit them flat on the ground or on a wall facing sunlight during a bright day. For digital cameras, if you photograph inside it'll be blurry, use flash and you get a flare.
You clearly have talent, are you featured in any galleries?

Yeah, sorry about that. The glare hits it on that side, too. As soon as I get a better photo I'll post it again. Thanks for that advice on taking the pictures. I tried facing it toward the sunlight, but my colors where bleached out so I didn't post them. I'm not in any galleries right now, I'm been in a couple shows but, no, not really. I'm looking into some gallery space this summer. Thanks again for the compliment and advice.

I think DSIllustration will be posting a demo on how to shoot paintings and setting up lighting with a digital camera soon I hope

Nice work. I imagine you'll do well with oils.
I'm no work-photographing wizard, but a lot of people suggest setting it up outside, but in the shade, so the light's even all over. I usually do mine indoors, with the lights at 45 degree angles to the painting, on both sides. Usually works.

Now THAT is a great painting, well done. I know, I get that annoying camera glare all the time >:| .
But there is one thing I might mention, I don't know if it is just me, but the eye (on our right) seems a bit too black. It might be the photography, or me, but then again..it might be you.

that's painted like masters in the old days would have done it.
In other words, beautiful. 8)

Ken- Yeah man, again, sorry about the glar. And I have some colors going on behind and on the back of her hand. I'll try to get a detail of the back of the hand if you can't see it, but I threw in warm and cool colors.
Ryanwh- it was an alright day yesterday for shooting. I took the advice of you and some other of the guys and got a better shot, thanks. And yeah, (I mentioned this but) I'm working on some gallery space this summer.
Smitherines - I kept looking for that post by DS, but I guess he hasn't put it up yet. I love that guys work...
Forge- That's a cool technique. I still have to try it, but I didn't have a good light to work with the other day. Thanks. What's "tut"?
Tentancle Eye- Thanks man, I appreciate it.
Sems- Thanks, I was hoping to compliment the subject. :)
Rex- Thank man. I hope so, I'm going to go get some this weekend and start applying it to my "Grave Robber" piece I'm working on. (I posted it in the progress forum)
Rebecca- Thank you very much. That eye has some blue and browns going on in it, I never use pur black in my painting, I usually mix ultramarine blue with a dark umber and use that. There is a hent of an eye there, but it was one of those parts of the piece I didn't really wanna draw attention to. Still, I'll keep looking at it.
flipperkun- when I was leaving work and saw that, I had a very large grin on my face. Thanks for the compliment. I'll have to quote you or something.
Thanks guys for all posting. I'm getting ready to put up the new shot of it.

the way light shapes her face reminds me of Tiepolo. Very credible atmosphere. The only thing I'd criticize is the use of yellow in this context, even tho I assume it's due to some ref. I like it.

i disagree butter... put a touch of yellow is a great idea to me with all those frozen colors...
Mr. Visions

The yellow was my choice. I wanted to use primary colors in this piece and the purple and blue tones throughout the piece I felt needed a compliment so I went with it. I liked forge's choice of words, "frozen colors". I did also use yellow in my reference shot that I took because she was wearing a maroon top. So yeah, there you have it.

Question: I'm getting ready to get some oils. Anybody have a suggestion what brand to go with and should I buy a set or buy tubes seperately? Hit me back.

I suggest Windsor & Newton Oils. Maybe buy a set and grab a few other colors you may want.

this came out super nice.
good job re-photographing it as well.
the face and the fabric around the neck are expertly handled.
if you ever decide to re-work it, i might address the hand a little more.
the back side of the palm looks a little flat (probably due to a lack of form shadow on the edge),
and the last two knuckles seem a little washed out.

Thanks DS for the comments and crits. I agree with the flatness on the back of the hand. I remember putting a highlight there on the edge but that was it. There might be too much blue in that area on the back of the palm as well. The last two knuckles I gradually made lighter because I wanted to put emphasis on the light source. I tried to rework some area that I felt too were under developed, but I found it difficult because of the clear gloss I put on when I had felt I was finished earlier. I might just move on but I'll keep these thoughts in mind for later pieces. Thanks again.
