As promised, here's my process for this character study. Click on the image to check it out. Basically, I sketched it, inked it, scanned it, redrew all the lines in photoshop and colored. Final image was 6000 x 6000 pixels, detailed with a 3 point brush.

Hey!!! that's really cool man, um.don't ask about the file i've included..i was just goofing around thinking about something inside my head about separating the elements with lighting..i'm not criting your stuff, just thinking how something would work and i just put it here to compare the idea for myself...NOT saying anything about yours...and yes my lighting was thrown down in like 6 minutes..so it's not very realistic :) awesome stuff man, keep it up

That's really cool looking. The only crit I have is that there seems to be a slight depth/perspective problem with arms and legs. After looking at it for a bit longer, I'm starting to think that I may be wrong about that, though.

I love the little details you put into it. Like the detail on the scuffs and scratches in robot's metal and the way you rendered the glow of the pilot light. Very sweet.

Thanks, everyone!
Scotty - Of course you can make it your desktop, go for it.
Don Wilkinson - I'm really glad you posted this, I added a little bit of colored light on a separate layer, but I wasn't fully satisfied with it. I'll definitely give it another go with some of this in mind. Thanks.
Atmospheria - Thanks, man
Android - Much thanks. I like to keep things clean, but I really gotta let my work loosen up.
tyboogie - yeah, I was going for a kind of retro robot with this guy. Kinda half modern, half old school.
mtw - you're probably right about that. This was a pretty rough drawing I turned into a shiny clean painting, but I'm SURE there are still lots of imperfections. Ah well. :)
rimwalker - glad all the hard work I put into the little things is appreciated
I'll be updating my original post with the process slider of this piece soon. Thanks for the kind words and even more thanks for the criticism!

I think I would have protected that flame-igniter-thingy a little more.
Bump it, bend it or break it off and it would be useless.
Love your work.

Ink - Yeah, I kinda went a little to realistic with this study, he's meant to be more of a comicy transformer robot, not to be taken too seriously.
KeyCustomz - Yeah, I penciled it, and inked it, and then redid all the lines in photoshop and then colored and detailed in photoshop.
LC3 - thanks
Deth Jester - let me know if you figure out what it is that bugs you, I'd love to have the feedback.
Loga4 - thanks
