Heya kids. I started this thing with the head, and wanted to do a fitting body. I really liked the idea of an exaggerated body, but not one that screamed photo reference. I think on that note I failed miserably. I started getting into that state of working where I was trying to impress myself with my rendering skills, and all but gave up when I started really seeing this potentially very cool piece quickly becoming a rather boring caricature of a body-builder. I think he's salvageable, so I place him here as a WIP instead of in sketches and doodles. Believe me, it was a split-decision.

Anyway, I think I might go for heavy shadows (like my hero Jon Foster), and dress him up in something to denote a different race or world. I'd love to hear your suggestions. I don't mean to hide anything (like I said, it's obviously from reference), so here is the ref I pulled from the net. (http://mayfamilyranch.com/temp/gauche.jpg) I think, to be fair to my ego, I can admit that my ability to "fake" musculature is in need of serious refresher courses, and so I can chalk this up to practice without feeling too guilty.

Alright... here's the piece in progress. Again, suggestions for lighting, costume, etc is greatly appreciated along with your crits. Thanks.

sorry mike, i think you really missed the mark on this one, i have included a 13 hour paintover to better illustrate what i believe you were originally aiming for. Note the metaphorical as well as literal sense of wearing a yellow cape and the contrast to the spandex pants that harry potter is known to love. I think the image speaks for itself.. hiding his true identity behind a pair of shoddy glasses obtained from the dollar mart, he krafted a wig out of camel hair with the agility of a thousand ages...

really great lightihng and form so far feeb, nice use of the refrence, as car as a costume or concept idea, mabye you can turn him into a cool cyborg bt giving him some robotic legs, mabye inverted knees too and a cyger hand or something, i like the torso so much I dont want you to cover it, this chest and arms would be a cool place to put alot of tatoos too, that way you could emphasive the form without covering it up and make him more interesting, anyway cool pic man

Just doodling for fun and thought I'd post it. I wanted to try out the color mode, but it didn't work very well so I dabbed over it in my usual manner.

Oh, man, prom, I love it (and YOU!). I just spent another half hour goofing with details. I'll try to tackle some color tomorrow.

Big fat thanks for the ideas prom and Android! :chug:

I think mine can take a bit contrast, it's a bit pale/uncontrasted. Move up the PS adjust:contrast slider up 10-20 or so.

judging by that picture you posted (in the "What does everyone look like thread) feeb this is a self portrait right?

I like it! The smoothness of his skin and the way the light hits it, looks like he's carved out of marble or soapstone... a nice off-center, "not quite human" feeling.

wow. This thread is actually getting attention, after all this time. Maybe I'll paint on him today. If I don't, it's prom's fault... just because I like to blame him for my shortcomings.
