I decided to put the progress shots of this one up, plus some close-ups.

Here's the original pencils, following along with the description of what the client wanted and their style guides.

I decided to do this in grayscale first. I also had to fix the perspective on the two buildings on the left because I just freehanded them in the pencils.

At this point I just start filling in the values and some detail. I belive this was the end of the grayscale portion.

Next I start adding the color. Beginning with the BG and working my way up.

More color and detail. At this point I kind of skip around from the BG to the foreground because I get tired of working on certain areas.

And here is the final image. Not a huge difference from step 4, but there are alot of little details added if you look.

Here are a couple of close-ups. I did this at 300dpi so the image holds up nicely when you zoom in.

Looking good jfwalls. Just thinkin, the foreground guy looks a tad flat.

looks great, very subtle palette... but what are those three UFO's doing in the middle? They completely threw me off...

I guess I should have mentioned this is for a game, and those are blimp-like flying warships.

Oh! Well, as long as they're recognizable to the audience. Is it possible to make them a little larger without taking away from the piece?

I like the mid and bkgd. I agree that the foreground is a bit flat. I think it is due to the outlined appearance of the gargoyle and the 2 men.

This is pretty cool; lot's of depth and plenty of interest. There are a couple things that throw me off, though. The pose of the splayed-arm guy near us seems unnatural and the lines on the far people seem as thick as the near ones, making the whole thing a little more cartoony than I think you were going for.

Nice.

if you made the shadows on the two guy's clothing lighter, more of a similar colour to the jacket, i bet it would help with the 2-d. I love how you can tell he's reaching for a gun. I got that without reading the description. they really look like they;re about to start something. nice job. the blimps threw me off too.

oo, i just noticed the other guy in the background, also getting his weapon. i like how that snuck in on me.

Thanks for the comments guys. I'm gonna go back and erase those tiny blimps and add one closer so you can see the detail. Is the flatness of the characters a bad thing? I like the cartoony-but-highly-rendered look. I think alot of my stuff has that style to it.

I think that foreground could be more different in tone from midlle plane.

Cool Painting. Kind of WWII looking, what was the clients description to you and what did their style guide look like.

Hey Brian! In the picture I had to have:

1:sneaky resistance characters
2:some soldiers + tank (tank was optional, but I love tanks so of course I had to put it in.
3:and it had to be a city scene

The location is on another planet, and everything has a late 1800's european look, with the military technology patterned after WW1 and WWII stuff.

Cool are you doing any more illustrations for them

Yeah, I got one more due at the end of the month. It's for a different game though. Plus I got a bunch of illustrations of knights for a card game. I'll probably post those at the end of the week. That is if the AD let's me. I may have to wait until they release the game in September.

The lines of architecture point to the man in the backround as the focal point here, which is why the foreground men are so jarring and seemingly flat, human eyes wouldnt be able to focus on both things like you illustrated. I think you should blurr the foreground a bit and darken the area around the gunman very slightly, it'll do wonders for the focal point:
