Hi, just wondering if anyone can help....I have scanned some line-art and want to colour it in painter but want to keep the line-art on top of the colour. When i open the file it automatically goes onto the canvas layer and i can't move it. Is there any way to import it into a new layer? thanks

Hi,

Easy!

Assuming the line art is black on a white background:

• Open the line art in Painter.

• Use Select > All or Ctrl/Command+A to select the entire Canvas.

• Click the F key to activate the Layer Adjuster tool.

• Click inside the selection to lift the line art to a Layer. This is Layer 1.

• To change the Layer's name, "Layer 1", to "Line Art Layer", double click Layer 1 to open the Layer Attributes dialog box and type the new name, then click the OK button.

• At the top left side of the Layers palette, choose Gel from the Composite Method drop down list.

Now your line art is on a Layer and, in Composite Method Gel, the white background appears transparent so you can see through it to do your coloring on the (now blank) Canvas or on other Layers dragged below the line art Layer.

You can also use the Place feature (File>Place...) This imports the bitmap as a transformable layer right from the start.

I tend to prefer the Multiply method instead of Gel since I often go back and forth between Photoshop which doesn't understand the Gel setting.

Thank you both for helping! I am new to digital work and don't have a clue with most of it!
