Sketchbook cleaned up a little bit, latest stuff at the bottom!
For that shadow producer challenge, but I hated it so it didn't go anywhere.

Dude, if this is crap... well, paint me brown! :confident
I wish my sketchbook was this good in its fundamentals. Nothing to be ashamed of, keep pumping them!

Ditto for me too, you got nothin' to be ashamed of here. Your anatomy is pretty solid too, and the rendering! The last one had no reference? ~sigh~ Someone's being too modest...:D The only crit I'd give you is to have more contrast, more blacks and whites. Oh, and more animal studies...but of course, I'd say that... :)

Heh, thanks for the comments guys! I probably do have to work on contrasts, I haven't really focused on that, I mostly find myself hating a piece before I even get there. I'll keep it in mind though!
One question... is there a way to tap creativity? Everything I do is so boring! No detail, no interesting concepts. Help!

Find something that you like or that interests you, then twist it around until it's the way you want it, or take an object or thought or anything and put a certain emotion into it... look for things that are simple and make them complex and vice versa, that's what I do.
All in all, I think the best inspiration for anything comes from nature and environments.
Good work with your sketches and don't force your creativity, roll with it. You're in Sarasota, a Ringling man perhaps?
Keep it up.

I really like your sketches. Great line weight and shading. I like that first critter.
I think creativity just comes when you keep pushing a design over and over and trying to look at it from different directions, but also when you relax and just let yourself sketch. Dunno, it's weird, isn't it? Sometimes it's totally there and sometimes it's not.
Anyway, share more! :)

Ian- Yep, incoming sophomore. Forgot I was giving myself away there. Oh, a woman though. I'll take it as a compliment anyway. So I suppose that means you should expect double the amount of posts once I begin my work.
I'll keep it in mind, with the nature and simple v. complex ideas. I try, but I think I don't know enough about how certain things work to make things complex. I was struggling with that ship, and that's about the best I can do. I think I'm going to start drawing more planes and tanks and crap from reference to get a better idea, or the inside of machinery to see how things are put together. I tend to go at art with a more scientific perspective (weird right?). I can't just put two things together that make no sense. Bothers me.
Thanks for the comments guys!

Ah, a Ringling woman, my bad! I hope to be a Ringling man myself come fall 2006! And yes, this does mean I expect 2x the posts, haha.
As for being scientific about it, that's pretty much how I am, always analysing things with my eyes whenever I'm out and about, taking in their inner workings and such, but 4 years of engineering and architecture classes will do that to a person. Just don't overthink things. A friend of mine asked me yesterday why it's so hard for him to draw cyborgs/mechs/machinery, and I told him to think of a human, and replace all the tendons and major muscles with his vision of them as metallic, or tubes with fluid in them, cogs whatever, and he finally got it. I guess you just have to find something to relate whatever you want to in a scientific way. Try and find some 3D animations of machinery or construction plans, virtual walkthroughs of buildings and stuff that you can rotate and freeze. I think Ford has some videos online of animated manufacturing of cars and you can see the robots putting them together, how they move and what affects their rotation and positions. I'll see if I can find a suitable link, not sure where I saw these.
Good luck with your sophomore year! What are you majoring in? Looking forward to an update.

Majoring in 3d actually. So thanks for the info on the Ford animations! I'll have to check them out. It's a really good way to think of things, it's already got me inspired! Now if only it wasn't 4 in the morning and I have no paper... >:{
Can't wait to see you there! You'll be just in time for the new building on campus! (It's supposed to be done then, but it hasn't even been started... lol)

Heh, thanks pes. The one thing I can't seem to not suck at is faces. I think I'm gonna do a couple pages of those in the next few days.
Dude, Seegmiller is having a workshop 3 hours away from me. I've been trying to contact the place for days, there's only 16 spots!! I need that workshop!
