I would like to extend to you this warm invitation to visit my home and studio here in Brooklyn this forth coming weekend, June 4th & 5th, 12-6pm, in concurrence with a local Art Walk in which dozens of studios, galleries and shops will be open for exhibiting art. My studio and home will be laid bare to all, with hundreds of drawings and dozens of paintings on display, most having never been shown publicly. Of special interest is the large scale canvas, Prometheus (http://www.donatoart.com/paintings/prometheusb.html), which was scheduled for exhibit earlier this year in Chelsea but did not show there, and my next epic medieval battle composition, Agincourt (http://www.donatoart.com/paintings/prometheusb.html) which is still in production. Previews are available on the site in the news section above, as well as links for directions and a map.(Agincourt is below)

I hope to see you there. Many other artists will be showing up ~ late Saturday afternoon....

I'm sure it makes a very nice smooth texture as opposed to canvas but I wonder how it holds up over time. I'd think it would rot within 20 years.

linen lasts centuries. It's has been found in stone age remains, and of course egyptian mummies. Linen canvases are quality (but expensive) and more permanent than cotton canvases. No worries about this work disappearing.

Nice to see so much ambition in a painting. It's quite rare to see here a scene with a crowd, but you do it in a beautiful way : Good inspiration for me.

maybe you're thinking of linen bedsheets or something... linen canvas is just as durable as anything else

I didn't continue my oil painting work after collage. I just never have a place for a studio and I suppose didn't have the motivation to make one. Since I am a tile setter by profession I was able to use that as an artistic outlet which I excelled in and made a grip of money so I guess I was satisfied enough. But I do wish I'd at least dabbled a bit more than I did. I would have know linen was a higher quality canvas at least! :bashful:

Ah but the wonderful world of digital art! A 200 square foot studio with every paint and brush imaginable crammed into the space of a monitor and a Wacom tablet! Gotta love that!

Linen is what the 'old masters' painted on. They werent using cotton, mayn!

Donato, your work is freaking amazing. I've known about your work for years now. I won't be able to make it up there for this, but I am moving to NYC in another 3 or 4 months. Maybe I'll see about stopping by then... you're one of my favorite illustrators and I'd love to meet you and see these paintings!!!


edit> oh, i just remembered! Hopefully you'll read this Donato... but, I'm saving up money to move to NYC and all that. Right now I'm a cashier at Wal-Mart, worked at K-Mart before this. One day I was thinking about my future and how I can't work crap jobs like this, I hate them so much, and I can't wait to learn what I need to learn to do what I want to do... then someone came through my line and bought a pack of cards (not magic, i don't remember what they were, they were greeting card sized) and while ringing it, put it in the bag, then pulled it right back out. I knew it looked like your work, so I searched it over and found your name on it. I was like DANGIT, *I* want to be doing this, not ringing out work by people who are *actually* doing it! hahaha

But I am really curious to how to came about creating this painting, what references did you use and all that stuff. Well, I had the pleasure to seeing Donato's work yesterday and I have to say that its so much more breathtaking in person. His work is amazing... Very nice and humbled guy with a great studio, beautiful home and great family. Two thumbs up for Donato being what many of us aspire to in so many ways!
