From AKIRA KUROSAWA ive only seen "the Seven Samurai" and "RAN" which were both great. The seven samurai is soooooo good. i still need to see "Yojimbo", "the Hidden Fortress", "dreams" and a few others i cant think of right now. Theres also a documentary on Kurosawa that i rented on dvd about a year ago--it was pretty good. cant remember the name--but it should be at the local vid store.----ty
any body got other recommendations? whats the best kurosawa film?

you should buy the hidden fortress.
its the movie that inspired Lucas to make starwars.
the paralells are obvious.
plus it has the best spear duel ever.
EVER!

You've mentioned most of what I've seen. Yojimbo was good. Seven Samuri is excellent! And Dreams is a favorite (although I recommended it to a few people and all of the later said to me "what the hell was that?" But to me, it was beautiful).
The only other one I've seen that you don't list is the Throne of Blood. I really liked it. It's a recreation of McBeth in feudal Japan.

Rashomon is excellent! Anyone see Sanjuro; supposed to be a sequel to Yojimbo.

hahahaahahahah---damn sparth--are you fan? thanks for teh comprehensive list. i started watching the hidden fortress last night--i forgot how beautiful his shots are. I really cant say enough good things about his films--everything just comes together--developed characters, cinematography, pacing, --does anyone make films like this anymore? not that i know of...It seems like the films-even hollywood films from this time period had a certain quality about them that has been lost over the years.---ty
oh SPARTH--is that list in chronological order from favorite to least fav?
ill happily watch these!!--how many of these are on DVD?
also--have you seen BARAKA??

ive seen most of those.
Toshiro Mifune is the Clint Eastwood of Japan.
one of my favorite actors.
he is also a very skilled swordsmen.
i have a few books on kendo and japanese fencing and Mifune is the poster boy.
he actually does frame by frame drawing and slashing techniques in one of the books. its cool shit.

I highly recommend Throne of Blood, Ikiru (To Live), and Akahige (Red Beard). Another Japanese filmmaker you might want to look into is Kenji Mizoguchi. Kurosawa greatly admired his works. Ugetsu (or Tale of Ugetsu) is one of the greatest films ever made.
