The first work I'll display is my comic. I've been working on a comic called "Sea of Kansas". Its my own story (my friend has helped me with the story-line) set in an alternative-universe with an early 1930's style to it. I just started to develop my own style in it and it seems to work out well. When people look at it they really like it (even though I've only fully finsihed 3 pages). This will prove to be a long project but I enjoy doing it. There will be a few concepts and pages displayed. I seem to ahve a problem with my people though, they don't appear very life-like. I have alot to learn...
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/G-Man.jpg
A Very Early Rendition of the first page of the comic.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/g-man2.jpg
A penciled-in first page, almost finished.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/G-ManFull.jpg
A full picture of G-Man. His head, hands, legs and feet are out of proportion.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/G-ManSmall.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/costumeconcepts.jpg
These are just some costume concepts. I've yet to do any for women.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/Villians.jpg
Two villians I've created (that wont show up until later). One is still in the works.
These are 6 pages, only 3 are finished and the other are close to finsihed. I'm having a peticularly hard time on the city.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/SoK5.jpg
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/SoK6.jpg
I need some tips (really need some on the city). I think its looking good but all my drawings are choppy. I want to do something to make them more life-like.

Here is a picture never finished. I plan to someday soon. Its an interesting picture. I took time to make personalities for the people. It seems poorly drawn though (hands are crap, legs are really long).
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/riverboat.jpg
This is a poorly drawn sketch of The Devil  and the Angel Gabriel .

the feet are always... always always always sticking out to the side... and the legs are always always always straight...real people dont stand like that, not even gangsters.

Suits and more suits. :)
One thing, I just noticed, why are all your drawing tilted to the right at around 5~15 degrees?? Some seems to be the scanning but some looks very tilted. A straight down the middle of your figure to check the weight might fix that issue.
As for drawing environments, perspective study will do you very good. It will help a lot with other stuff too. Don't stress too much about pencil rendering skills or sribbly lines, these will come naturally to you after a while. As long as you know it's something you know you want to improve on, I think you will do fine. Also study on anatomy?
:)

Everything from the waist down sucks on my figures. I'm starting to use a skeleton model and add some muscle features. I drew this sketch last night and applied my new skill to it.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/ArtClassSketch.jpg
It looks better (I think?), but the feet are the devil! I'll have to redraw, and redraw until I get it right. This is for ART class so I'll ask my teacher what to do with the feet tomorrow.

I like "The Devil" a lot. Your style has potential but you need to work your anatomy more.

Heres a pic, just like the last one (I redrew it because I f***ed up the one above). G-Man looks too old in this one, but I think I fixed the feet? Hes also leaning too far back DAMNIT! I really have to work on this...

I really like the fact that you're doing 'period' stuff! Costume studies, suits, hats...very cool. I know it's been said, but study the feet. (And hands) Try doing a page of your own feet (viewed from above, and in the mirror) and post it - I'd like to see how you do. The more you study something, the easier it is to draw out of your head - which I'm sure you know from studying all those wonderful costumes! (ps, especially like the piano player!) Anyway, good luck, and I'll keep an eye on this thread!

I tried to work on hands...not a very good job. This was from a couple weeks ago. I basically looked at my hands and tried to copy what I saw.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/CrappyHands.jpg
Heres a more recent pic. This one I think has the best work on hands and feet I've done.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/Gabe.jpg
Hmmmm, seems like when I try to hard my drawings tend to suck. When i just "freely" draw and not worry they tend to come out better.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/concepts.jpg
Drawing gloved hands is alot of fun to me for some reason! I just really wanted to draw them, so I did. The wavy fingers thing didn't come out as well as I would have hoped :[

hey Quinster,
Looking a lot better!!, good hand studies. It's absolutely vital you get the proportionas right for the fingers, otherwise they look really weird.
I still think that last figure is slightly tilted but this time is actually balanced. One thing I do notice is your figures look much more well balanced when you don't draw the feet. as in the last two figures without the bottom half. They look really good. Try drawing your figures with help of some straight lines, on the feet and in the middle. You might want to check out some loomis books or anatomy books. It's getting better though. :)
cheers.

Feet, commin' right up! I'm drawing female costume concepts and since you girls love shoes...
Quinster
June 9th, 2005, 06:25 PM
Alright, I got two pictures with feet (I'm still working on this sketch). Wimsey's shoes arn't exactly the way I want them (I wanted a pointed toe) and it kinda got blurred out during the scanning...you can get the basic composure.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/Femalecostumes.jpg
I'm really happy with the hand I drew for Wimsey :} Its looks femmine and its very articulated. Exactly what I wanted. And yes...from now on I will use a straight line down the middle so they're not tilted or leaning. Sorry.

I've started on some more sketches. I redrew the one with G-Man holding a colt and a breifcase, it still sucks. I also have a new one: "A Toast, To the Traveling Salesman!" My friend suggested he should be holding a vacumn claner instead of a wine glass.Great idea she had! I'll try and impliment that.

Shoes?? SHOES?!?! Hey, just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I like shoes. :P Nasty bad things...pinch your toes and give you blisters - not to mention making you walk funny just to get male attention! :S Gee, I think you actually managed to find and push a button I didn't know I had! Sorry about that.
Nah, what I meant was life drawings of bare, wigglin' toes dude. For instance, the first drawing of Whimsey with her foot pointed towards the viewer? Instead of looking coy and sexy, her leg looks broken! Gleep! Not what you want at all, I'm sure. That's where studying feet and ankles (and knees) comes in real handy - you learn how to twist the knee and feet accurately to get those nice, confindent poses. G-man with the gun now, is looking pretty good. Don't knock yourself! However, again with the left foot, it needs to be turned just a little bit towards the viewer to get a real sense of weight and volume. He's really solid and dimensional - until you get to that foot and it flattens the whole thing out.
Anyway, sorry for the long pontificating - hope it helps!

Teigrob has pointed out some interesting things, I also suffer from this, as I have been drawing upper half for sometime and only realised I can't seem to understand volume/weight/proportion of the bottom half. I really think it's all mental, we justify our mistakes or get used to the whole damn situation until someone points it out. But! having said that, the last figure is your best!, well balanced and weight seems to be distributed more correctly. The feet looks much better.
One thing I just did notice is your faces, most are 3/4 facing << this way. I know we all have our comfort zones, but this is the devil we all have to fight I think. :)
These are getting better!!:) hope to see more.
Oh and about the shoes, I hate shoes myself, my feet just can not get used to them, lucky I don't have to wear them to work everyday. :P

*&^^%#$#$$%# LEGS!!!! I need to look at legs, muscle diagrams of legs. And you want bare feet eh? Well, I wont post until I get you both get feet to see(I'll do some legs while I'm at it)
By the way, Teigrob, how would you make Wimsey in that "coy and sexy" pose as you so well put it. Any examples of your own imagrey you can show me? I draw men too much damnit, when it comes to women they never seem to look feminine enough.
Well, I got alot of time to work on them feet today (Staurday School, forgot PE clothes for the 2nd time). So hopefully, when I get back, you'll have your feet. :}

June 11th, 2005, 02:23 PM
Ah - making me put my money where my mouth is, eh? Good for you! (sucks for me... just kidding!) Your women look feminine enough - very classy and beautiful, not the usual 'sex kitten'. Just that one leg - so, I did a drawing for you to illustrate what I meant.
http://www.raja-animation.com/rachel/images/horse_zebras_deer/heel_example.jpg
Notice how you can't see the heel of the foot pointed towards you. I probably haven't turned the knee far enough, so I need to do more work too. In case you haven't figured it out yet, art is one long journey of ever perfecting oneself. ...dagnabbit.

BEHOLD! FEET! I did this in Staurday Shcool. I tried to draw some feet the best I could and as you cna see on the side I also drewa skeleton structure. Hopefully I can go buy a book on how to draw the anatomy at Boarders this weekend. Fortunatally, there was a kid with sandals on in class, so when I got stuck, I looked at his feet.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/FeetandSkeleman.jpg
I redid G-Man's foot right here, its a little weird, I still ahve to fiddle with it a bit.

Period clothing can be very intriguing ~~~ your pages look a little smudged ~~ it help to fix them even though they are in a sketchbook ~~~ try to get a little more variation in your line ~ think about what you are drawing and think about how it would feel to the touch and try to get your line to reflect that feeling.
Quinster

Hmmm, thats a good suggestion with the line variations and all, mentler. I'll experiment with that. The smugging I'm still struggling with, but its much better than it was before. >:D

I LOVE that dark one with the hat. I don't know if it's good or not, but the darker colored sketches seem to stand out more (ink or pen or something?) and they seem to look more 'finished.' I just like those a LOT...

Let me just say one more thing about your current approach <> If you look at a line and say that is a good line so I am going to draw over it again <> you will never master this craft ()()() every time you go back through a drawing the new lines should be NEW Lines ()()()() You said something early in your thread that is dead wrong for the creative soul ~~~ you said I redrew these and I feel really good about the results ~~~ artist never feel really good about what they do ~~~ because if they stop moving forward ~~~~ Yes it is a curse and a blessing ~~~ no one understands us ~~~ and we have something no one else has!!! The ultimate irony~~~~

Absolutely right - always always ALWAYS study! Whenever possible, draw from life. When not, draw from anatomy books - and THEN let the imagination fly! You got serious potential Quinster, hone it till you're the professional telling all the n00bs how to be good like you! (I'd really listen to the Bone Doctor - he's so good he's scary!) And now I want to see hands drawn from life! (doesn't want much, does she? Sheesh....) Keep it up!

I think you mistook me there mentler, sorry. Really what I meant was I was pleased because it was better than the last one I did. That doesn't mean it ends there and I'm completely satisfied with my work, I'm never staisfied. Really, I think my drawings are crap because they lack something, some kind of more realistic effect. I can't really understand why people like my comic or my drawings so much. What is it about them? The comic I inplimented my own style for the first time with a kind of spooky, dark, scratchy looking image. I really don't get whats so great. Theres alot of other people on this site that are so good it makes me want to shoot myself. By the way, how old do you guys think I am? Professional level? Thats pretty damned high if you ask me, not something I can imagine reaching until I'm in my 20's. I'm just 15 (going to be 16 in August)! I've taught myself to draw since I could hold a marker, I only took one art class in my whole life for about 3 years on and off. But tell me, what makes you guys interested? What makes me "worthy"? I've just began to grasp what being an artist means (am I really considered an "artist"?). I must say though, I appriciate the support emenssly. :hatsoff: I always check to see if theres a new comment and try and take all your critiquing in. Keep it comin'!
Heres a drawing I did last night. I used that leg position you showed me Teigrob.Thank you so much! I tried to shade the full sketch of her in the middle, but it turned out to be crap.

You're getting better :). I like this pose of a man with wine-glass.
I'd say the same that Mentler mentioned. When you put a line and repeat it few times the same way, you instantly treat it as final/finished. The form is kind of "closed" too early. I had the same problem and teacher in drawing class mentioned it to me. It's visible especially in life drawings and makes them a bit flat. In imagination drawing it's harder to see it.
Lots of studies/life drawings and it will look cool :teeth:.

Hmmm, so its all line variations? I never actually thought about it until mentler mentioned it. At the moment I'm really trying to work on the anatomy of my figures. My biggest challenges and are hands and feet. My ma is supposed to take me to borders today to go buy a book on how to draw the human anatomy. But on the part of line variations, mind showing me some examples? This doesn't really work unless I get a visual visual :teeth:

hey Quinster, your last post, Wimsey looks very good!!
how about Loomis books? they are readily available online free. It's a very valuable resource. You might want to have a look at that before going out and buying books.
ALso check mentler's signature, there are some good resources there too. :)

Hey, you got something cool and original happening here! I really like the 20's style^_^ Don't beat yourself up too much about anatomy..it takes some time to get, but once you mentally grasp it, there's no letting go! And hey! You're just 16 and it's already lookin like you got it figured out. Don't quit! You got me interested...I wait for more~~~Sio

the main issue w/ a lot of your characters is the drapery...you dont yet have a solid grasp of how cloth falls over the form...and you've got to have a good understanding of the form before you can put cloth over it realistically. use a JCPenny's catalog your mom has or something for clothing ref for guys...really flat lighting, but it will start to give you a greast sense of how creases develop.
don't get discouraged, just keep drawing

LOL. Thanks you guys. Yeah, all my dimensions area bit flat. Takes time I guess. I've been moving slow on drawings lately, I'm thinking of posting some works from around a year ago to show how I've progressed, but I dunno. Reight now I'm doing my final art assignmnet, it can be anything we want so I'm drawing G-Man (I've posted the one of him walking, thats the one I'm doing). trick is there can't be any black lines and there has to be a full background. Not too hard, but its due monday. Well, I'll try and post it later. :teeth:

Well kiddies, heres my new post. I've decided to show some drawings from art class. We did portraits recently (April and May) and I'm going to post some of those I did in the alloted time we had for each person who got a turn on the stool. Its hard staying still for 10 minutes! And when the teacher forgets you're up there...aw boy. But it wasn't nearly as bad as our brave clasmate who had to sit on the stool for an hour every day for 2 weeks!! :hatsoff: I tip my hate to her! While I'm at it, I'll post a picture I drew for Art Class that got entered into a Western Art show and its concepts.

The foot facing towards us is kinda werid, I gotta fix that. I'm gonna draw him handcuffed to his breifcase. A kid in Art today gave me the idea :}

Heres the concepts and the final drawing. The final one got in that Western Art Show. A Nice chunk of it got cut of in the scanning as did many of these larger pictures :sadcheerleader:I don't like the drawing that much; too many flaws. Their legs are too long etc...

Note: Have you ever had your work on exhibit then see someone look at it and move in to listen to what they say? Well I did...I think we all know how that ended up :(
Well, this took forever. 3 hours of scanning and milling around on the web for stuff completely non related! I found out that asexuality (as in having no sexual desire) isn't theoretical. How come we never hear about asexuals? This is tripping me out, what else don't we know? 0_0
I shouldn't even be posting that lil' tidbit so forget it. Anyways this is alot of semi-recent work, from a few months ago or so.

Nice update! Always good to work on heads. Now that I've seen that last fully rendered girl, I can see one of your problems a little bit more clearly. That of drawing flat? It's because you aren't treating the human form like it has form. For instance, her eyes don't look like the spheres they are, stuck into the bony sockets of the skull. One thing that helped me was to actually draw the whole eyeball when I was drawing someone's face, not just what I saw. Then it's easy to apply the shading you would to any old sphere. Another thing to try - draw the figure as a series of cylinders with a ball for the joint of the knee and elbow and wrist; and shade accordingly.
The only other thing I'll crit you on (that you haven't already noticed yourself): is on the last, fully rendered piece of the cowboys (very nice by the way - don't listen to people who just trash you. Chances are they can't draw at ALL. Just listen to constructive crits.). The only thing I'd say is that it needs more contrast to bring out the depth of the picture. That would be really easy to do: just darken up the figures in the foreground - the two gunslingers - and really draw the viewers eye where you want it to go. Otherwise, with no focal point, the tendency is to look at everything when you want people to focus on what's important - the two gunslingers.
Lastly, we're helping out because it's kind of like passing the torch. We all really love to draw and love to see others learning as well. When you love something, you want everyone to love it and enjoy it as much as you. Besides, as Siobhan says, you're doing something original. That alone gets people's interest. If you do the same thing everyone else does, you won't stand out and people will just go...ah, another zombie. YAWN, seen it a million times. Do something different...that's the key.
Anyway...sorry for the pontificating. Hope it helps... :bashful:

Ok, my two cents worth. First listen to Teigrob, she's giving you good advice. The hard part will be to do it.
Also you are doing great for your age!
Now one of the things I feel might help your gunslingers "pop" out a bit more is to darken the line where you have shadows. Like the bottom arm of the guy in the front.
Also, your rendering skills are pretty sharp. With more time and practice you'll outclass just about everyone else here. Rendering is hard to begin with. It's even harder to do it well (something I'm still struggling with). Already I can see gradients, especially on the over-turned table, but it is faint.
Keep at it and remember that 90% of the people will want to tear you down because you can do something they cannot or will not try to do.

CONTRATST!! CONTRAST!!! THATS WHAT MS. CASTRO SAID! ARGGHHHHHHHH!! Sorry, at one point I just said "To hell with the contrast!" and left it like that. Right now I'd kinda like to leave it, tampering with work that ahs been long finished will screw it up. I could try on photoshop? And those people who saw my drawings, well they were 6th grade girls who related that shootout to something with Ms. Kitty and then went crazy over someone who drew a horse *they sure liked horses). You might say don't take that so hard and I didn't, its just those were the only people I saw really look at my drawing. Kinda sucks when you get bad crits fer your work. Thanks for your (constructive) crits guys. Its been a real help. Wow, what an amazing yet disturbing place the internet is. My next drawing is the Traveling Salesman again, although I think I'll draw the first villian you'll see in the comic, I've only done two pictures of him not nearly finished!

I'm in my technology class right now, and since I have nothing to do I'll post a comment here. I'm going to draw alot today. I'm Planning on doing several characters on one paper. I'll do G-Man (of course),Tommy (G-Man's close partner...Tommy is gunna die), Wimsey and her partner Douglas, Gordon (first villian) and the Traveling Salesmen (probably with some of his cronies...should they have faces?). Should be good, I need to draw more than just G-Man. You know, what should his real name be? I wnat it to be Italian since hes supposed to be Italian (could you tell?). Well, the bell rang and I gotta go buy some cheese its from the vending machine. I'll post when I get home. :blahblah:

Heres my new post with several characters from the begining of my story. Note: Wimsey and Douglas won't accompany G-Man until after the death of Tommy.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/SoKCharacters.jpg
Some of the proportions are a bit werid, but it was a rough sketch. I just posted it to give a bit about the characters. I didn't write anything for G-Man and nothing on the backgroud for Douglas. G-Man is supposed to be a mysterious chracter and his past and personality unravel as the story goes on. Douglas is calm, cool-headed and has a clean wit. Hes pretty quiet though, but he has a very deep, sentimental side you wouldn't expect. Not too much more on Douglas, except that there is alot of sexual tension between himself and Wimsey. we all know how that kind of thing ends up  Yes, there will be a love story, how can't there be? I'm thinking of eventually hooking up G-Man, but I'll have to see in what context and with whom. For most of it he seems asexual, but then there will be the femme fatal, oh boy G-Man can't hold back everything. Well, thats for the characters. Whats a story with out good characters?

Some gals. Wimsey is up top supposed to be holding a big revolver. Also, some weird elf chicks. I'm thinking of putting weird mystical creatures like that in my story...I'll see how it goes.

Hey Quinster, still going strong. :) good stuff. Now don't take me wrong, but I see you are doing your tilt to right drawings again. It seems you might have to constantly draw a line in the middle and horizontal line on the bottom to help you straighten that out for a bit. Also it's a good idea to study some very straight stiff, normal generic, default figures, the basics. You also seem to draw all your faces either 3/4 right or left. We all seem to develop strength and weakness in terms of our styles, but there is no need to restrict yourself to few poses. Don't be afraid to produce bad drawings, face it head on and conquer it. :) won't happen over night but it will get you started.
I have always drawn << 3/4 view myself for a long long time. Too long and took me even longer to break that cycle, but even now I am effected by this and often draw lopesided, my judgement has been adjusted to my mistake. Took me a while to realise what my weaknesses were and now am urgently trying to go back and fix them.
You are dedicated and talented, so you are already halfway there, practice don't always make things perfect, you also need to understand what perfect requires and then practice. :) Hope to see more!
cheers.

Hey, heres one where I wasn't. Tis another work I did for art class. Its one of me and my cousins.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/MeandmyCousinsPhoto.jpg
Now isn't this a happy little picture of me, my Cousin Amanda and Cousin Deter? This was taken Thanksgiving of ought 4. Seems simple enough to draw?
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y271/theblackspot/meandmycuzins.jpg
Now see how badly this drawing was done? Its out of proportion, has very poor contrast, funky faces, (except for my cousin on the left, I drew him better than myself or my other cuz in the center) really, the whole thing is crap. The poor work on this drawing is because I only had one day to do it, I still got a B+ though. Now, if I were to redraw this and have all the time I wanted it would probably come out better. I need more practice. :sadcheerleader:

Hey Quinster,
:) good start with the drawing. I guess one of the important thing to discipline yourself is to draw what you only see, see the buttons on the shirt on the left figure? you hardly don't see that in the photo, the tie on the right figure, you hardly notice that too. Same goes for many details you have placed in the picture. Work big, think and see in masses first, and then work your way with details. If you get bogged down on the details from the beginning things tend to not match up at later stages and too late trying to get those straight.
As for colouring with a pencil, it's dead simple, squint your eyes a bit and see what values you see, start off with a few and work your way from there. Again seeing and drawing what you only see helps. You have added lots of details that you know of from your memories or what you have seen, but not very strongly portrayed in the photo/reference.
Have you read through some of Loomis books? Creative drawings or other books? there are freely available and he points out lots of interesting ideas. Of course it's upto us indivduals to make our own studies but a good starting point nevertheless.
:) You have plenty of time, so be patient and keep working on it. Is that you on the far right??

I've taken a slow walk through the whole page, and I have to say that I'm very impressed with both your progress thus far, and your ability to take crits to heart. I really, really wish that I'd started drawing much earlier than I did, but I missed my chance. You have that chance, and you're making good use of it. Stick with the CA crowd. This thread is looking great already.
When posting the last pic, from the photo, you mentioned that things are out of proportion. While there's no substitution for the trained eye, there are lots of tricks that can help you get the most out of a reference like that. Here's one I use very often: aquire a compass, the regular sort that one uses to draw circles with in math class. by opening and closing it and matching points to points in the ref you can easily help check your work as you go. For example, set the tool to the width of a head, leave it set like that, and then compare that measurement to something else, like the height of the head. If, lets say, you see that the height is twice the width, you can look at your drawing and check to see if you're in the right ballpark.
You can do the same thing with a finger (an arms length away for work from-life or against the photo if it's a ref), a pencil, or .. your eye (keep it in the socket though :) ). Anyhow, it's just a great way to keep one thinking about the relation of one form to another.
Things are looking great! Keep it up!

You're killin' me, dude! I've been sittin' here for almost an HOUR and it STILL hasn't completely downloaded! GAH! That's probably why you're not getting a lot of posts - it's why I haven't posted lately. My insanely slow modem coupled with your large file sizes is not good. What I have seen is really cool - detachable collars? Sweet! Easy fix my man: if you have any sort of photo manipulation software, even Fireworks, check the image size of the picture you want to post. Rule of thumb for my posts is 100 dpi (that way it's still legible but small enough for web) and either 700 pixels tall (7 inches) or 700 pixels wide. Do that, and your images will load WAY faster. I'd suggest you do that with all the pictures you've already posted as well. Won't take long, and it won't break your link. Just have to re-upload them. Oh yeah - sometimes people don't post on your thread for awhile. Don't get downhearted - remember why you're doing it: to improve! Who cares if people post? It's great if they give helpful crits, but in the long run the only person who'll really help is yourself. So fix those file sizes, remember why you're doing this...and I'll be sure to check in at LEAST once a week.

The file size is a definite factor. I have a great cable connection and it takes quite a bit. THey're also often too big to look at em easily without having to step back from the screen. It'll take an hour I'm sure, but it's worth resizing and Editing each post to correct the image link.

Aahhh...WAY better! Thankx dude, that helped a lot. Now I can see what you're posting! :) Hrm, nymph girl...yesh, those hands - they need some work. Ever heard of Burne Hogarth and his 'Dynamic Anatomy' books? He REALLY exaggerates the figure, but it helps sometimes to see the figure that way. He also does killer hands. Still in high school, right? So, probably no access to life drawing unless it's okay'd by higher authorities - still, that leaves your own hands to study. Ask a friend to pose for you too - clasping their hands or whatever. Do a page - do two! :D Can't hurt, and it'll certainly help. Aw, what happened to the demure, fully clothed women? :( And how are you doing on those squirrels?

Some more wimsey. I used some more references from that book. It helps! The figure already looks more femmine, but there are flaws. Wimsey's right are looks like some two-by-4's with a crappy hand and that one of her with her head tilted upwards looking crazy is kinda funky.

Here are those cartoon squirrels! I finally got it done and for a first (or maybe second...) attempt I think it came out alright? Damn cousin and her requests...
Teigrob
July 6th, 2005, 11:19 AM
You're quite welcome! :bashful: Ah, there's the infamous squirrels! The cute one is looking sickeningly sweet, nice, and the demon is looking properly frightful, so I'd say you succeeded there...the background is indeed too busy - got a light tracer? Trace your squirrels and redo the background if you'd like.
Your feet are looking better - no longer sticking straight out to either side. Be careful with your heads, sometimes they lose volume (like the frightful one). It helps to do the circle or egg shape first to maintain volume. Remember Mr. Plane head? :P That's kinda the idea.

I like that old truck - the stipling is really nice! You should do more of those.
Help for the feet, huh? Well, the best thing to do is sit down in front of a floor length mirror. If you don't have one, put a small one up against the wall. And draw your own feet! It really helps. Draw them from the side too, it'll help you see how 'tall' a foot is. Feet are kinda shaped like triangles, with the highest 'point' at the ankle. Keep that in mind when you draw from the front, and they won't look so flat. Also, toes don't normally splay out like hers are when you're standing like that. The big toe sticks straight out, and the little toes kind of curl towards the big toe. Keep it up, you're improving!:)

Are you kiddin'? Theres alot of stuff. In the 90's it was either really bright colors or it was grungy. Now its more of a refined urban thingy. Maybe it depends on where you live? In the midwest their clothing style is still stuck somewhere in the 1990's. :dur:

You know what? I like the hat. But it should perhaps dip down a bit lower over the eyes, so she doesn't have to see that people are looking at her? It seems more "characteristic" to me. It may just be me, but the crotch looks like it's a tad too low for the gal. Also the pants don't exactly look like they're tucked into the boots, try adding a little more "stress" to where the pants go into the boots. I understand it's still in structure, but the molding of the left hand looks too stiff and unnatural. Spread the fingers and have them grip onto the hip bone. As for the right hand, it cuts off too soon into the sword. And just for suggestion I think that with the angle of the face, the head should be cocked slightly to your left. But it does look like you're improving on the feet some.
One more for the road: look over the girls' legs in the book.

Nice! Yeah, when women plant their hands on their hips, the hand points up, not down (unless they're um, trying to attract attention via hand movements). Your faces are getting better, and the feet are definately improving. For the pirate girl, I always find it helpful to lightly draw the limbs first and then the clothing over top. It helps to figure out how cloth drapes over elbows, knees and muscles; where the bumps should be, and the stress points.

Wow, quite the image haul, Quinster! Haha, I liked your pencil'd comic at the top "You need to work on proportions.." :D Don't worry dude, you'll get there. You got YEARS to perfect it. Heck, I didn't notice myself getting good until about 3 months after I got a degree in illustration! Er, what's with Ms. 'Uterus'? :nohope: Kids these days...talk about anything... :P

...yeah, the penciled in comic was just fast and scratchy, I wasn't trying to make it look good. "Ms.Uterus"? Meh, its just some dumb joke. My friend thought it was funny becuase its just not said. I'll get more on here. Not any good stuff this time around. I look through my stuff and it annoys me to death! Its really flat, alot of it is smuged, sloppy, or unfinished. Also, the comic I did of me is so corney it makes me sick. What can I do?

You know...I havn't been able to draw much for the past couple days. This is stuff from last week. I just don't have the "art jooce" so to speak. You know? When you want to draw but when you do it doesn't come out well at all...those days when you just can't articulate. Yeah, kinda tired and bored. Slightly used. Hey Quinster, :) your figures are lot more well balanced now..
I am with Tei, you should do some serious anatomy stuff, not like just quick sketches, I know it's a hassle I can't for the life of me do it for long. But you should really start getting into them. You know Tei's all into anatomy on her thread. Some careful drawings and studies. I guess creative drawing is all good, but I am sure you have realised how limiting your drawings become when your knowledge isn't very vast. I am so feeling that these days, I can't draw what's in my head because I don't know what goes where. SO I tend to stick to what's comfortable for me and leave it at that. Even Fellah with his god drawing skills is on anatomy stuff, he knows he's weaknesses and going to amend them.
:) are you able to attend any drawing classes? some life drawing really helps, or even at school. Really dig into some anatomy and studies.. you can apply them to your creative drawings and it's really going to kick ass. :)
Keep going dude!
cheers,
Quinster

Looking forward to it! In the meantime...;) Well, the gals with the second vampire, their necks are too long - makes their heads look kinda wobbly. Your fingers in general are 'rubber hose-ish' - which, if that's what you're going for, is fine, but they don't fit with the rest of the body. The gal looking hurt is pretty good; you should practice drawing your own face in a variety of expressions. That's what I used to do - I used to see what it was that differed an 'angry' face from merely 'disapproving'. It's a good exercise. Keep up the good work dude...we're watching, don' worry! :cheerleader:

Nice shading dude! Very nice. Help with the feet, eh? What do you want to know? If it's perspective, you just have to practice that...if anatomy, same thing. Right now, the only thing I see that's really wrong is that they look too big for his body. Or maybe his head is too small...Either or, one of 'em ain't right. If you want a homework assignment, (noo!!!) then do a page of realistic feet. Make them look bony, 'cause they are. No shoes, socks or rubber hose-ish style. Trust me, real life studies ALWAYS benefit your art, and make your own style more believable, not less. That's something I learned in college - hopefully you'll learn it earlier than I, and progress correspondingly further. Good luck!

urrrgh...perspective...I hate and fear perspective - which is a very bad attitude to take, as it limits me. Every now and then I peck at it, and then I leave it alone again. :nohope: The only advice I can offer is Loomis, more Loomis, and Hogarth. Get re-e-eally familiar with 'structural' drawings and forego the details for now...advice I should follow...:S

did someone say perspective???? :nohope: I think it scares just about everyone Tei, yeap loomis had great stuff on perspective really worth looking into. Not to mention it's free. :) Quinster dude, good to see you still going good. nice experimenting with clothing design and shading too. THough I must admit you are going to have to eventually get into more anatomy stuff, i know it sounds boring and so on but it will help you heaps to get your figures looking right. It's still a bit stiff, heaps of improvement alright and quite obvious you are not scared to try out different poses and so on. that's a good thing not being afraid. But it's still quite unnatural in many ways. Drawing from life and so on will get you moving in the right direction..
Hope to see more dude! :)

This is a picture I forgot to put in the last post. I had these guys in a nightmare sometime back, I finally put them on paper about a week ago. Its somewhat difficult trying to draw things from dreams. These figures arn't the scariest ever drawn, but in my mind they are terrifying. The nightmare was more psycological and the imagrey helped to add to its disturbing nature. Maybe one day I'll try and draw that too.

I've been experimenting with characters, Wimsey mostly. I've been trying to re-invent the old one. I made Wismey really wicked with the newer version, she was a different person, I've tried bringing back the old one in these newer sketches.

Hey dude, what's going on? Getting kicked out of class?? Dude, you gotta learn to be more circumspect! ;) Just doodle down the margin, when the teacher's back is to you.
One thing I've noticed with every character you draw - your faces are always 3/4 view. Do some side views, full front and 3/4 rear to shake things up - even Charles Schulz drew the Peanuts gang from various views. :) Keep practicing - you're improving! :cheerleader:

I've decided to name my mischevious Nymph "Ivy". I made a story for her where she'll fit into my story. Not all of it can be followed without explanation. If you follow Ivy you can see shes a regular nymph and then starts being more human. She'll be nessecary to the G-Man, Wimsey and Douglas's mission after they run into the nymphs. Ivy is intorduced to clothes and "proper human girl" behavior. In the midst of it she gets caught up in her own vanity and when our characters do eventually run into the devil Ivy is manipulated by lucifer himself to do his bidding (really evil stuff). She betrays the G-Men and then is cast aside by the devil after her use is done with, stripped of her clothes as well as her vanity. Cast into despair she desperately seeks help from her cousins of the sea (water nymphs, mermaids, whatever you call them, I'll probably make them relavent before this particulas sequence). "Cousins! Save me! I am lost, I have been used!" (something to that effect). The cousins of the sea are less forgiving than her family in the woods. They know of what deeds she has done and how she has forsaken them. Instead of helping her they beat her, shave her head and take out her eyes, so that she may never see beauty. Afterwards, tey return her to the woods blinded and shamed. The head Nymph of the woods (not sure what to call her shes been drawn before and shes also in the upper left hand corner of this sketch) cannot give her back regular sigh so gives her the power to "see beyond" or something like that. Ivy eventually gets her sight back at the end of SoK when she comes to aid the Dead G-Man. Sorry for all the typing, it was a huge brainstorm I had last night and all of today. I'M ON A ROLL!!!

Yeah, you were right, I drew them kinda big, but that type helemt of WWI German soldiers was bigger than the ones you see later in WWII. First half of WWI (1914-1915 and 16 I beleive) the German army wore the Prussian Helemts; like these:
[/URL]
I happen to be very fond of these :] But at the point in the story I draw the characters its towards the end of the war. I'm thinking anywhere from late 1917 or early to mid 1918.

My drawings have been frusterating me lately. All seems to come out wrong, the sketches are poor and choppy or weird to the point where I get sick looking at them. What comes out of my head isn't coming out on paper. My drawings are very teenagerish with teenagerish shading and body composition - very two dimensional, very choppy and screwy. Hands are weird, wrists are long, thighs are long, people stand too straight but every once in a blue while I draw something decent or that has alot of character and depth (like Kats face which I currently have as my avatar). Everything seems scratchy and ill-composed. My comic has gotten to about 35 pages in all sketched and only 4 completely finished. Most of my other drawings remain unfinished or poorly drawn or only semi-completed. Its hard and frusterating. It feels like I'm pushing something up a hill with no leverage. Its bugging me, but I still have a very long way to go so I shouldn't be too hard on myself....

One thing I noticed right away in your group pic in a car...Douglas is sitting directly behind G-man, but his legs aren't in Whimsey's face, even though she is ALSO sitting directly behind G-man. :) Might want to shift Dougy's heinie over a bit. :teeth:
I know it's frustrating...I went through the same thing when I was a teenager. I hated the way I drew, yet I kept doing it because surely, surely! eventually I would get better. And guess what? I did. :) As one of my art teachers in animation school said...you keep drawing and drawing, and you feel like you never improve...and then one day everything falls into place! and then you're stuck at that plateau for another long while as you draw and draw and never improve...and the whole process starts over. So don't get discouraged, keep drawing and pushing!
That's a cool car. :teeth:

Hey dude, looking good! I especially like the last page, with the shading on Whimsy and the guy. Your faces are looking much better, more 3-dimensional. Hands are also getting better, but I still don't see much feet. :P What I'd like to see you do now is some closeups of faces. Draw them LARGE. Really study eyes, noses, ears, mouths..etc, etc. Don't draw them how you THiNK they look, but from anatomy books, master studies, your own face, whatever works. It's so easy for us to get into grooves and think 'I've mastered 'x', I don't need to study that again' when in fact we are no longer drawing what 'x' really looks like.
You're coming along good dude, keep studying and drawing! :)

Interesting. Is there more dialogue to go along with this? I'm having a hard time following the action. Have you ever looked at books that teach you how to lay out a comic book? The best on the market is probably Scott McCloud's "Reinventing Comics". It's not doing comics 'the marvel way' or 'the DC way' or 'whoever's way' but YOUR way. Pretty nifty stuff. :) You're improving by leaps and bounds dude, keep it up! (oh, and a hint - you get more posts the more you post. So keep posting through the dry spells and never give up!)

The comic I just kinda threw together. When I drew the first dozen or so pages it was supposed to have a line of action you could follow but what ended up happening was a speratic collage of images. I thought it looked kinda cool...although, I do know how to follow it. I like the fact that it is confusing. The tlaking bubbles I had to do because no one coudl read my writing. I have seen those books by Scott McCould! Don't own one. They're very interesting.
More of the same kinds of sketches. People are getting better and so are feet...no luck with hands. These skecthes are from a few weeks ago, however, I am doing alot more drawings.

Hey Quinster. :) Your nymph is a little hard to tell at that angle, but her right arm (or is it left? whatever, the one on the right) is too long. See if you can find a proportion chart and practice with one of those, they'll help you figure out how long things are in relation to other parts of the body. Your fountain is pretty nice, but remember, water always falls straight down unless it's shooting from something. A fountain like that though, it's more likely it fills up until the water spills over the side. Life drawing dude! Go to the mall, the park, school...library...whatever it takes, and draw from life! Cheers! :)

Interesting comic. A fish out of water story, I take it. You're getting better in drawing, but you still need to work on female features. You have guys down pat, and it's showing a bit in your female face there - her chin is too strong.

These are kinda dull. I did like the sketch of my friends on the left. I've had little "inspiration" to draw anything for a while.

I went outside and drew a few things. I decided I should try drawing more things I see. My Grandmama suggested I draw roses or fruits in a bowl, something with still life. So my next post may be something like that.

hey dude. :) I really like that referenced portrait you did. You should slow down and take the same amount of time with some of your other stuff (and study hands and feet the same way! *hint hint*). You've got the drawing chops, you just rush. I also like the latest there, with the war trenches. Very nice. :)

Its been a while since I posted...I'm moving towards pictures that take more time and effort. I have ambition now. I decided I was to go to Art Center College in Pasadena, California. Its going to take a hell of alot for me to get in! I have to get started.
Heres a picture of my grandparent's wedding. I'm giving it to my Grandma for christmas. My scanner made it look horried but once its framed I'll take another picture. http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k120/blackspot_01/th_GrandmaandGrandpaWedding.jpg (http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k120/blackspot_01/GrandmaandGrandpaWedding.jpg)

Heres a face I drew from a reference
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k120/blackspot_01/PC190022.jpg
Heres an experiment I did with mixed media. I changed it a bit since I last took the picture.
