Hi,
I'm pretty new to painting portraits, I attempted a greyscale portrait about a year ago but have never messed about in colour. I used a photo for reference and colour picking and finially got a piece finished.
Any comments or crits are welcome

I don't understand? It was a good exercise in learning skin tones and colours. The image wasn't traced, which it sounds like that's what you're thinking, and I don't see why it's so alarming that I went from a photo... Am I supposed to think this image up in my head?

maybe you shouldve posted the ref photo, so people could see the difference
theres nothing wrong with what youve done. i guess you're "supposed" to mix the colours yourself, if its just a practice thing i dont see anything wrong with it though

[edit: davi]
I moved this piece to sketches and doodles from the finished section because it's really more of a study.. There is no stylization or anything to it, so it's hard to call it "art". but anyways... good job mocking it or something...

Well davi, it wasn't a "study", it's not a sketch, and I'm sure it's not a doodle.
It's a finished piece, and I'm fairly happy with it. That's why it was put in the correct section. I have no idea why you decided to move it, I know where to post my work

jesus. whats the all the bad tension about....too many "elitists" on this site. anyway, I will say this:
you have a good working knowledge of portraiture and color. what the other jerks-i mean, members are trying to say is that perhapse you could add some more creative elements in your next peice-which i hope you post.

Her hands looks like in a coal-miner. :)
You could take some more interesting photo (f.e. my, hehe).
Anyway.. You can be pretty happy with it.

I think you did a good job. You where using it to learn so I praise you for your hardwork. I also think it turned out well. Looks a lot like the photo. I'm not a big poster here on these forums but it makes me sad to see people be so hostile...
Hey, keep practicing :)

I want to see more. different paintings that is. I'm not convinced that this isn't a paint over of a photo. If you're going to do paint overs and show them here on this website, do some conceptualizing with it. Make her look like an alien, or a dude, give her some scales, make her bald. conceptualize. What would she look like as the She Hulk. She Hulk concept art. What would she look like as Osama-mamma bin Laidon.
There are too many artists on this site that bust their ass to be great artists, for some one to come along and insult thier intellect by doing a photo paint over and expect them to believe it.
If I'm wrong by assuming this, prove it. and show us more using some examples as mentioned before.
good luck

Thanks for the possitive comments guys.
mcotie, I have one of my own paintings in the works which I will post when it's finish.
Regarding your comments, it's not a paint over. The original painting was opened at the side as a visual reference as I said. The only time I copied the original over to my piece was when it was finished to check the proportions, which are not 100% accurate at all, but I guess that's obvious without having to copy it over.
I never expected them to be accurate anyway, I just wanted to paint something that was recognisable without viewers having to be told who it was. If I achieved that then I'm happy. I didn't intend to make her bald or give her scales, it's my first ever colour portrait. Next time I will possibly be more adventurous.
Thanks, Boz
