Oil practice paintings!

These are paintings that I am doing in my life drawing class. I decided to post them here and not in my sketchbook thread cuz I would like any feedback, whether it be opinions, techniques, tips, crits, comments, whatever. I just want to get better, and hopefully some of you guys can help me out.

I wanted to paint something for this one, but wasn't sure what, so I opened up my spectrum 9 book and saw fosters starwars piece. It's just for practice though, and hopefully he won't get offended or anything. It's not finished!

These were all 20 min. studies on bristol paper!

your colors are really nice. you have a knack for that.

i am having a problem on your proportions first off. i think that especially with the seated female nude that the hips are way too large. it also looks likt you are afraid to draw hands and feet. study those. study your bony landmarks too. all those bumps that happen when the bones stick out of the skin.

as far as rendering goes, i think you are headed toward the right direction with space and modeling the form. i think that maybe a big problem from keeping you to go further is the fact that you use a lot of strokes that go in the same direction. dont be afraid to draw lines that go across your form. the first in particular. my first thought is that i just wanted to wash a long stroke across the small of the back down to the sacrum.

one more thing. squash and stretch! if someone is sitting down, the butt pushes all kinds of fat and skin and muscle out to the sides. the bottom of figures contain the most mass. remember gravity!

thats all i have to say about that. keep it up. you are on the right track.

Lately ive been having a somewhat tough time with this, but I see some improvement with these, so that makes me happy.:) I still struggle, but I understand it more each and every day; I would like some crits, or suggestions from others who have used oils before. I just want to know what your process is or what you think I need to do to improve.

one thing i did in class was paint the environemtn around the figure, but no figure at all. mabe you could try that? you're spending a lot of time on the figure itself, and looks liek you have a grasp on what it looks like, but what about the area the figure is?

id say use more paint! glop it on that paper! move it around! oils arent like acrylics, they are much better used to in full force (starting out, glazing is another story) right off the bat.

these are better than some of the folks in my painting class here at school :)

im no master, but what to work on?

1. more paint!
2. environment thef igure is in (finding the actual colors around the figure will make finding the colors of thefigure much easier too!)
3. env with no figure
4. covering an entire sheet of paper (do 8x10s, work quick and cover the entire page)

These were done today, my other painting friend( there's a total of three that paint in the figure drawing class) came in today, and since he's better than me at painting, (im better than him at drawing ;)) he showed me a couple of things. And man did I learn a lot today!

Hey Iwasink,
I like the gestures that you are capturing with these paintings but I think where you are suffering is in the color choice. When you mix the paint for the shaded region try not to go too dark or too opposite the light color. The 25 minute one looks the best to me (obviously right you had more time hehe) but it's because of the color choice that makes it more appealing. It seems better possibly because you have a distinct dark, mid, and light area on the figure. Try to think about your upcoming ones in that fashion when you are mixing colors (if you even have time to mix colors)...sheesh it's hard enough to draw in 10 minutes let alone paint. You are doing awesome keep it up...I'm not even sure if what I am saying is on track but those were my first thoughts. Your stuff is lookin good keep it up.

I.was.ink, I definitely like the way you are experimenting with warm and cold colors. My favorite one is http://images.deviantart.com/large/indyart/indymisc/00602.jpg. I also see what drewantarctic means but IMo it isn't that important for this loose kind of study. But something I'll have to keep in mind, too.

I wonder how the oil is behaving on the bristol board. Doesn't it bleed/leak from the paper?

thanks fellaroos! Actually because it is bristol paper, it sucks it up a lot....and I mean a lot. I have to get some medium so that the bristol won't suck it up so quick!:)

maybe try a quick layer of gesso...not sure maybe that would do somethin

It would, but then I'd havet to wait for it to dry and stuff. I think I'll just get some medium to help me out. Although I'll have to wait a bit cuz im broke right now!:(
