I've been lurking and occasionally posting on the forums for quite a while now and I figured I should keep a sketchbook in here to motivate myself to keep working. Anyways I just finished my freshman year at college so I've got all summer for skill building.

I've been having trouble handling colors so I tried my hand at a few digital studies. Heres the latest one I did the other night.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/aeson/strip.jpg

Heres a few randomly chosen sketches I did recently. No refs on any of em. I apologize for the crappy scans. I've got one of those REALLY cheap scanners.

And heres an idea I had for the latest C.O.W. (shadow producer). About 10 minutes in PS.

And in case anyone here is mildly interested in 3d, heres a robot (game model) Im working on.

i like the work that you have done. it's impossibly hard to motivate ones self during summer, since there is so much to do, and the lack of things to do, but it looks like you've kept up your skills. i hope to see more.

hey man, that painting looks pretty nice. I'd say just keep pushing your from life stuff so you can get that up to the quality of your from photo stuff.

interesting design on the robot... i like the arms/hands the most. Those eyebrows could use another division in there to round them out maybe... you spend an awful lot of time focused on the face with 3d models.

goodstuff man!

Thanks for the replies guys.

BlankslateJoe: yea I really need to work more from life. Ever since summer started I've barely done any work other then out of my head. And thanks for the crits on the little bot. I'll see if I can work them in.

Been kinda slackin off but heres a few random sketches over the past week or so.

Always wanted to do one of those heads ~ have a dvd where the whole body is done in Maya very interesting!

aesir
June 13th, 2005, 09:33 PM
I'd love to see what you would come up with in 3d mentler. Considering your considerable grasp of anatomy, the only problems you would encounter would be in learning the tools, and frankly 3d programs dont take all that much effort to get a handle on the basics. so basically.... DO IT!

blankslatejoe
June 13th, 2005, 10:48 PM
cool head there aesir, the meshflow looks pretty solid, though the subdivisions make seeing the lipcorners kind of tough. The only glaring thing is the connection of the ear.... it looks a little odd underneath it, and the ear itself looks a little too boxy/extruded.

goodstuff, you're getting stronger all around!

aesir
June 16th, 2005, 08:18 PM
Thanks for the crits on the ear BSG. I fixed it up a bit. Now Im working on the rest of her body. (Well I'll be starting on it soon I should say...)

Just a quick page I made last night. Really starting to like ball point pen. Especially since it actually shows up on my scanner.

Hi there, welcome to the best part of the forums! :confident

Don't know if you wanted c&c but heres mine:

I love your 3d work, be interesting to see a rendered piece here soon if you plan on doing any?

In your drawings I think your strongest area is the head, and the weakest is anatomy of the rest of the body. I think you have problems placing the features on the face correctly - perhaps because you are thinking of the lines rather than the forms? The problems are mainly shown with the placing of the eyes and mainly in the 3/4 view rather than profile or straight on! -- good example is the heads on the beige paper - both the bald guys in 3/4 view have their eyes askew from where they should be! Try and think of the face as a rounded object -- looking at the loomis books online might help here.

Hope this helps!

Hey man, nice rendering on the first post, i like the 3d face, would be neat to se e it with a higher degree of sub-div, so that you can see it more smooth, cool to see some 3d works in a sketchbook as well, maybe i'll try to post some to =)

Keep it up!

Sixblade: Crits are always welcome :) Youre definitely right about my placement of various features. I dont spend nearly enough thought on what I do. As for a rendered 3d piece, eventually.

hurricane: thanks man. critiques would be great!

Gridur: Thanks for droppin by. I'll post the smooth version once I actually get some more work done on it.

Been pretty busy with various projects and summer school at the local community college, but heres one thing I've been working on. Its a concept for a Lizardman for a cgchat contest. Gonna make a nice game model out of it.

Thanks for the comments dadu! Yea a lot of my "from imagination" work is really off anatomy wise. Still working on it.

Lately I've been really busy with other projects so I've hardly been sketching at all, and when I do, Im usually putting out crap. Heres a few random pages anyways.

Hey fellah, thanks for dropping by.

paddy: thanks for the crits, I think my next little project will be a ton of action gestures so I can get a feel for more interesting poses.

I think the nude painting on your first post looks great. You should do more!

I like your drawings too though the anatomy needs work here and there. I think with your faces, the features (eyes mainly) are sometimes too high. I really like the pencil drawing of the 4 girls, very nicely done. You've obviously got skills so keep it up.

Love your latest 3D model too. He's looking good. I'd love to give that stuff a go one day but right now, Maya and 3D max give me a headache.

Good stuff aesir :)

I agree, you should do more digital paint stuff. Wish I could really comment HOW to do it, but I blow snot at it, so you are on your own. You have some really nice stuff, but I think you could really push your style more and give your drawings more life. Very nice though, and very smooth pen work. I look forward to seeing more of it!

aesir
July 31st, 2005, 04:08 AM
Amerasu: thanks for all the nice comments. Youre right about my faces, definitely still having trouble with them, even though I do them fairly often.

masterpug: Thanks for the comments. Im glad you think my penwork is smooth, but if you ever got to zoom in on the pages, you'd see how shaky my lines actually are :nohope:

And since both of you asked for some more digital paints, I made one tonight for ya.

the face looks pretty off, but I got bored with it an called it done. Another guy asked why she was nude, ... its cause ninja robots stole her clothes. Because they do that.. They're pervs.

I, like everyone else, am liking the progression of the 3D lizardman. Nice translation from the 2D concept. Can't wait to see how you do the textures.

Your paintings are pretty good too. Your first post had a lot of nice tonal work.

Thanks again for your comments in my post too.

Keep it up.

mrblonde: Thanks, Im starting to think Im improving to :) Unfortunately my abilities are still pretty sporadic. You'd be amazed at how much crap I put out that Im too embarrased to post on here.

hey man I like your paitning on the first post. On that last one I say paint it I would like to see what you can do with it.

Crit.

the one thing that is holding back the sketches is the proportions and in some cases your anatomy. Take a little longer to thinking about the shapes that are made by the objects before putting the pencil down on the paper.

Good work so far.

August 14th, 2005, 12:01 AM
hey ben, thanks for the crits. You're right that I do better when I actually think about my lines. I just really really want to get to a point where I can just put down some lines on the paper without thinking bout them and come up with something tight

Thanks for the kind words Arlando.

So yea yea yea, I havent been doing a whole lot in here lately. I've got a few sketches in my book, but there isnt any scanner nearby, so youre gonna have to wait a few more days on that. For now, heres a little brainfart/speedpaint. About 15-20 minutes.

bengonzalez
August 14th, 2005, 01:24 AM
Hey nice work for 20 minutes. Just to let you know that I understand completely how you feel about just being able to turn out masterpiece after masterpiece with little effort but that effort needs to be put in before we get to that point. It can get frustrating as hell but just trudge on, crunching at the figure studies and life drawing, we'll get there.

aesir
August 17th, 2005, 12:35 AM
hehe yea ben. The hard part is PATIENCE.

Well, you guys remember that robot at the top of my thread, well before I got very far into texturing, I started to hate the design. So I drew a quick sketch of a new, but similar one, and redid it. Heres the sketch and the new model.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/aeson/sketch51.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/aeson/steambotremake.jpg

Heres a little bit more ballpoint work. Got some nice new pens to play with :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/aeson/sketch50.jpg

And heres a little digi speed paint. About 3-5 minutes a head. I just used a really large brush and gradually built of the shadows. A really pleasent way of doodling. The brush was too big to define any eyes and I didnt really feel like getting into details, so I just used the ole white blobs for eyes.

Wow, I have been away from this sketchbook for WAY too long. You have come very far. Very nice tablet stuff and you have some really nice sketches in here. I think your proportions get out of control at times and the characters don't seem very thick, as though there is really just a front and not much of a side. Might try drawing some things just from the side and taking it into account when doing perspective. I do love that last tablet one though, marvelous facial expression.

Thanks for stoppin by my SB. Cool 3d models you have. On your drawings done on the blue paper, you have the right idea with adding the white, but dont have do it, the highlights right now are making them look wet and shiny. Keep up the good work.

Thanks matt! and yea, I totally get what you're saying, although part of it might have been when I adjusted the levels on the scan. Those drawings probably needed a lot more rendering overall.

Just scanned a couple more

(I ment the dude from oct1stof 2005!)Your last 3d model is very cute.... I like his hand design and I love the addition of the various rivets about his body!Looks like he is a lot of fun to play with, I can sorta kinda see his walk in my head~

hey.. u got a preatty nice style to sketch but i think u should take care of the construction a little more.. some sketches would look alot better if u would check some proportion out a liittle bit.
cheers, keep it up.

grudge: thanks, thats one of my favorite little designs too :)

Slayer: yea, definitely. Its something I really need to work on. I really need to rough things out more and find the planes that make up my object of study. I will have to do some work on that...

some really nice concept ideas here, aesir, and your anatomy drawing is coming along heaps, more construction and proportion stuff but you`re getting there.....love the 3d stuff though, the robot is cool....
thanks for stopping by as well....

Really nice 3d models. On your blue drawings, I think you are over killing the highlights a bit, especially on the one that is just a portrait. They are really random and don't fit with the light logic...they are very distracting.

Hey thanks for stopping by my SB! You've got some really neat stuff here! That watercolour portrait is really good, and your studies are great too! Just remember to practice, practise, practise!

Krispee: thanks a lot man. I'll keep chuggin away

smitherines: yea, you're definitely right on those blue drawings. Thanks!

Serpian: will do :)

Anyways, not too big an update. Im really really n00bish when it comes to paint, so getting just this far was pretty damn tough for me. Pretty medicore result, but I figure its gonna take a ton of practice before I get anywhere half way decent with traditional media like this.

thanks for taking your time looking at my stuff.. i had a blast looking through the progression from the first page to the 2nd.. i really dig your model work.. i liked the life drawings on toned paper a lot, and what seemed to work for you is the blue pencil concepts for that pirate. i donno why but for some reason i see a lot of myself of how i progressed in this sketchbook... perhaps if i ever get around posting my older work youll understand.. but anyways really narly work and keep going at it

hey thanks for stopping by my sketchbook.:)

i like your work a lot, it's showing a great progress. i especially like this piece (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/aeson/redwhite.jpg), and that robot on the first page reminds me a lot of Ratchet & Clank, in a good way.

i don't think i can offer much in the way of crits, plus my spacebar is all gimped out, but keep up the good work and cheers an all that anyway.:)
