Hello all !

I will now tell you about a boy (lets call him Fortune) that is afriad to color his art in painter 8 due to the ongoing failure to blend colors together.

Ok now thats said. How do you guys get your colors blended togheter so well ? I have no problems at all when it comes to pen and paper but when I use painter and trying to mix 2 or more colors they either end up looking smudged/blured or well... not just good at all. Am I using the wrong brush/brushes or am I working with the wrong rezolution or what ?

Lets say i wanted to paint a sky (no clouds) going from a yellowish/pinkish color to a blueish one, how should I do this whitout making it look blured. What settings , brushes etc or is there something else i need to do wich i just dont have the knowledge of ?

all tips and hints are out of most importence to me, so thank you all for replying

P.S feel free to demonstrate with a picture if you have the time :)

Is this kinda what you were asking about?

Transition from one color to the next without blurring. Pretty simple. I started with a light blue background on my canvas. It acts like a wash. Then I used one of the oil brushes to paint in the sky. Blocking in the colors, but I didn't use it on full opacity. That would be like throwing paint on the canvas without a medium! So at about 30% or so opacity I brushed the colors onto the canvas. I didn't just stick to one hue of red/pink, yellow, and blue.. I went ahead and played around with it and picked out some darker shades and lighter shades. The sky wouldn't be just one color, would it? ;)

Basically, just fool around with the colors, keep nice long brush strokes. Keep it loose. Have fun with it!

Btw, I generally start with a canvas of 2000x2000 (with the exception of this example). When I have the painting finished, I can make it smaller for the web and that helps to smooth everything out (not blur).

There's a big difference between using mouse and tablet, especially in programs like painter. I think you can adjust the tablet sensitivity in painter settings. Some people may be heavy handed than other, and you should adjust the setting accordingly.

Have you tested all the brushes in painters yet? I'm not a really painter user, but I've tried painter 9's trial version and noticed most of brushes there don't give me the blending I want, except oil pastel, digital watercolor and blender brush.

On a side note, you can give a try to openCanvas too. :) I prefer that program over painter, cuz it's easier to swtich between brushes with short cut keys, and feels easier to blend in that program.
