first post on ConceptArt :rendered:
I've never been to any art class, I'm just drawing for myself, because I do enjoy it a lot.
I don't use any refs for my drawing, I'm just trying to learn by watching other's drawing.

Hi man.
Nice start on your sketchbook here.
The last to is looking very nice, good line work and a solid anatomy.
Some of the others have slight problems with that, too long arms, too short leg and stuff - but it seems to be easy fixed. The shading is nice on the helmetdude on the first drawing - keep that up :rendered:
Anyhow, keep working and good luck. (btw using others drawing is ref to  )

Fellah. > I think one of my major problem are the legs. I use to draw them to short. I have to work on that. I don't see it when I'm drawing :S , but once scanned on my computer, it's what I see the first.
hypocalvin > I know for the feminine pose, it's not great, but I like the overall proportions on this one.
I'll try to scan some more of my work and post them soon.

This one is a bit older than the previous. I found it more difficult to draw girls, so I don't do it very often.

Hi obi.
wolverine is looking good - and yeah the legs are a bit short, not much tho.
I like the beast drawing (last one) a lot dude! Nice concept, nice beast design and nice detail on the man. I can see you got the talent, but maybe you need to slow down a bit and look at your stuff before you start inking and coloring - the inking is very good on the last one, nice and controlled line work, looks good. Take a look at the man: his arm is almost longer than his leg, his right hand is very small and his head is way too big. the pose he has would break his back - or at least hurt like hell :P The beast is missing two legs btw, even tho they are behind the first one you should still let them show a bit, this way it all looks a bit flat.
All that being said - it is a nice drawing and i think with some work all this will be fixed. Check out mentlers thread - hes a 1,2,3 - 1,2,3 system on anatomy somewhere that is really helpfull! And my advice would be, scan the stuff in and kill the flaws before finishing it. I scan, redraw, scan, redraw, etc.
Wow, long comment :^^;: hope you dont mind. Woudnt use my time here if i thought you didnt have the skill, so i hope i didnt piss you off :^^:

You're getting good keep going.
On the one with the girl holding the wine glass: The elipses would not follow the vanishing point lines unless the glass was a flat cut-out.
http://members.cox.net/gilead/glass.jpg
There's always one more perspective line no matter which direction you look. It's the one that goes from your eye straight back to a vanishing point. It would be impossible to see or draw as anything other than a vertical line down the center of any object, but it is there and it's what makes 3 dimensional things bulge out towards the viewer.
Obi-one
May 19th, 2005, 04:09 AM
fellah > thanks for the critics. I'll go and watch mentlers thread. I think your right, I don't take enought time to watch and redraw if there something wrong in my drawings. I'll be more patient.
I know my beast have only two legs, I wont change it on this one, but next time I wont do this mistake. :S
Gilead > I didn't think about that when I draw it, but now I see you're right. great crit. thanks a lot. :teeth:

Yeah cool stuff, I'd agree your proportions are off and to do some reading on that. Lots of your guys really have a wicked sense of movement and dynamicism though, and that's something that's hard to practice...keep it up and you will rock hard....good work...

You have a lot of good stuff going on in here. Keep it up.
In the first pic of your last update, the guy with the two swords has some pretty strange proportions. His head looks a little too large and both arms are much too short. Sort of the same thing going on as one of the guys way back in your May 16th update. Also, I think that the knight dude with the helmet has something weird going on with his left arm's bicep & deltoid area. Could be just the way I'm looking at it though, not sure.
Aside from that, everything is lookin nice. A lot of cool characters all over the place too.
Mr. Visions
July 20th, 2005, 07:13 AM
This is a nice start on your sketchbook. One thing I would advice you is to try more dynamic sketches with your characters and get them out of the "pose shell". I have this problem alot to. If you get comfortable drawing characters in motion/action, it will improve your work overall. Keep postin'.

You have good tonal value in your pictures, but i noticed that you mentioned that you do not use reference. I recommend that you start using them just for the poses, don't draw the exact picture , but pictures of athletes jumping and punching will really help from keeping your characters stiff.

Its really impressive to see the improvement over the first few sketches and the more recent ones. Whether its the fact that you stopped using as much ref or whatever else, its obvious the recent stuff is done with a much more relaxed hand.
Some of the poses seem a bit stiff and off-balance here and there. The face studies are good, but I think you'd be better off working on sketching them with shaded values, to get a better grasp of their form. I'm assuming those are reffed, but who knows. When I'm trying to improve with faces, I just sit down with a black and white newspaper and sketch every interesting face for a few hours. The b&w makes it much easier to study the shadows. Your values are really off-the-charts dynamite on some of those concepts, and your PS stuff is looking really, really, sharp. I'm also in the Ogre fan club, and I really dig croquis22. (Couldn't think of a way to describe him.)
Keep it going, buddy.

acorn > When I watch my colored stuff, I not very pleased with it. I haven't been coloring enought I think to get a good feeling.

This is some awesome stuff dude but there is one thing that keeps nagging at me. The legs, on alot of the pieces you've got here the legs seem a bit short, I mean obviously it's intentional on some of them but sometimes it just seems out of proportion. Other than that fantastic stuff, look forward to seeing more.

Your work is great and displays a lot of imagination ( and that's not a euphemism!)
The skeletal robot-esque head is a fabulous design ( Gen. Grevious as he should have been?)
The ogre with bark paldrons...are you sure that's non ref :) ?
The artillery mech from October post...looks functional and well constructed.
Rocking skull dungeon concept.
Burgeoning professionalism evident in all of these, and most importantly they do what good concept art should...not to be glossy designs or figures with edgy poses but working designs that inspire creativity in others.
Your strongest human figures are the ones where you've economized the lines and constructed the forms geometrically, like the cloaked figure from yesterday's post. I find emphasizing the geometry of even curved forms helps heighten the illusion of volume. The best way to tackle human eyes is economy and suggestion, especially when working with small scale sketches and drawings. I like to emphasize the folds of skin of the eyelids and exagerate the recession of the eye in the orbital of the skull, and create as much contrast between the light and dark values as possible while keeping everything in proportion. With eyes, full figures and small working surfaces, less is more.

I like this SB. You have improved loads since it started. I dig the dragon head and the leather-clad figure in #52. It's terrific how much you've learned on your own; now I think you should start practicing from reference, such as photos and anatomy books. Some anatomy studies would help you improve greatly and take your work to a new level. Great character designs!
