Hi. I am 20, a Business Student at SFU, Burnaby British Columbia. I've been following Conceptart.org for quite awhile but had been too shy to share my stuff. Anyways... here's some of my stuff from Jan to present of 2005.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v21/ThreeEyesWorm/TMP25.jpg
The top left guy was drawn from National Geographics but the fancy stuff around him (or her, I couldn't tell) and the cloth were conceptualized by me.

Good energy and concentration ~~~ try for a little variety in your line work ~~~ think about what the line is doing ~~~ talk to yourself when draw to stay focused ~~~ this line is coming at me ' now it is going away ' here it starts to go over this cylindrical form ' it goes up over around behind and back out the other side ' this form is coming at me ' this line is going away ' here it goes through a shadow area ' then a light area ~~~ remember your line is describing the terrain is going moving over around and through and not just inclosing and area to be shaded. Actually it some be a map to let you know where your planes are and where your darks should go. I think you have a good start or I would not have spent the time to leave this feedback!

Hi It's been awhile since I first posted. I have decided to post my stuff again. Mostly it is because I went away for military training in the summer. It was great fun but my drawing skills went downhill for awhile.
Mentler, sorry for this REALLY late reply but I really appreciate your criticism. Line variation is something I know I should work on, however, I still don't know how to approach it. I have been practicing what you have suggested. But what I find really difficult is line variation/shading for textures. Any advice on that?
Here are some stuff ranging from June to present.
The scanner at school was not all that great but it will do.

This is excellent work from a 20 year old. You have a lot going for you; great pencil work, imagination, a good sense of the proportions of the figure, keep up a good work ethic and you'll progress quickly, I think. good stuff in here.

I absolutely love the last sketch of that couple and the sketch of that character two sketches before with the wicked helmet!
It seems in the last sketch though that that guy's hips are a little too narrow? Makes him feel a little too feminine, which would work, except that he's got broad shoulders... At least in my eyes!

madplanet, you are too kind saying that this is good for 20 year old. There are 18 year olds that are better than me. ><
rewind, thanks. :)
Autarkis, I thought of the same thing of the hips at the time as well but I thought he looked a bit cartoony so I didn't fix it. Besides, I am really lazy when it comes to erasing things. Most of the time I don't use erasers at all.
I scanned more.
Just trying out different styles of faces.
This is probably one of my favorite random-line piece.
http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/994/scan100089kj.jpg
I really liked drawing this one, but once I got to the background, I was like... omg what do I do now..... But now I look at it some more, I plan on going back and finish it. Gah, I should actually FINSH some drawings eh? (That's right, I said eh, it's not as ugly as people make it sound to be unless you say it every third word.)
http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/4641/scan100059vl.jpg
I really don't like this one but at the same time, I think there's something to it. Maybe I am kidding myself.

Don't kid yourself, dude. You have some skill and passion going on here that a lot of artists twice your age don't have. Besides, there will always be somebody better than you or me or anyone for that matter. There's some 10 year olds that can draw better than I can! You just have to be true to yourself.
I know you said that you want to finish some of these last ones, but they are interesting as just sketches, too. I like to look at the unfinished stuff, seeing what has the potential to emerge. Thanks for sharing.

December 2nd, 2005, 12:33 PM
Is it just me, or do you seem to always get tired before getting to the feet? Since, I think, none of these have "finished" feet...
Yes-yes, they are sketches, but I don't know, it's kind of disappointing to scroll down and constantly see that you have only suggested the feet, and not given them even half the detail the rest of the drawing has.

mhovland, it's because i want to start my own comic book business. However, nowadays am beginning to realize that the business program at my school isn't really a entrepneur/innovative program.... So I am having second thoughts. Thanks for the compliment but i think it's a bit exaggerated.
Gloominati, thanks for the compliment. :)
madplanet, Oh yes, though I might not be technically better at drawing than some people but I will find a way to outshine them!
I understand what you mean by they are interesting as sketches but it kinda gets old... so one of my goals is to make them look more finished. It will be nice to actually realize that potential.
dmitri, you are absolutely right. Feet is probably one of the things I concentrate on the least. I do get tired of drawings... >< It's one of the problems I am trying to fix... But another reason why I don't go into feet is because I don't usually include them in my compositions. Perhaps i should....

Hey,
Really awesome progression, those charcoal drawings are first-class!!!
One crit - push the values in your pencil work - try pushing the shadows/ midtones half a step darker just so you get more contrast with the white paper. Just remember that dark marks will draw more attention so put them down where you think their necessary.
Hope this helps.
Peace.

kapturowski, Hey! Oh man! It's been slightly over a year since we last talked. It was actually YOU who introduced me to this site! Thanks man, but I am not improving fast enough yet. >< You should update your sketchbook!
Warground Zer0, I know what you mean. >< I have become aware of that problem since I've been self-teaching values for the past few months. I think part it is due to my pencil. I have to push REALLY hard in order to get darker values. I am thinking of using various pencils in order to get better values. But I find changing medias break my flow... but I need to get use to it. It's actually one of the reasons why I am so awkward at painting. Painting = something I want to learn so bad but absolutely newbie in...
A few more scans. Also from October-ish.
10 mins.... The texture was accidental. It was actually because it was the last piece of paper in my paper pad and because of that, the board that I was drawing on was imprinting these textures on my paper. So I worked with that.

Very nice charcoal lifedrawings. Seriously, these are good.
Your pencildrawings are good too, but you're better at charcoal I thing.
Perhaps its cuz pencil doesn't allow high contrasts. How about something with a black and a white pen on toned paper?
So long...

mhovland, modest? Look who's talking. :P
blacky, thanks man. But I don't know if I should be happy or sad about your comment because I've been doing pencil a lot longer and a lot more than charcoal. >< I just started charcoal this year... Only got into it recently. I think one of the reasons why my charcoals > my pencil is because charcoals are so much quicker than pencil and I get bored of drawing the same picture so fast. I might try some pen or thicker pencil?

Yea... I said I wasn't going to draw until the 16th... but I can't help it... even though I am so behind on studying I can't help but draw. >< It's horrible... Drawing is eating my grades!
These are from this week....
When I first started I really liked this one, but as it progressed I started to hate it. I don't think I am going to work on it anymore.
http://img343.imageshack.us/img343/4874/scan19zf.jpg
So, after visiting the best of CA, I started to hate all my drawings.
I opened my reference folder and drew references like mad.... until the guilt of not studying woke me...
The following 2 images are all referenced.
http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/3391/scan100010tw.jpg
http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/7941/scan100063fy.jpg
And then I was listening to the House of The Daggers soundtrack. So. Good. The battle music got me pumping.
So naturally, I drew a bunch of warriors.
Off my head:
This one I was drawing to the rythm. Always fun.
http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/8769/scan100025js.jpg
This another one of those started-good-and-then-hated drawings.
http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/3561/scan100033jf.jpg
I WILL finish this one. As soon as I figure out the design for his body armor, I will finish this.
http://img455.imageshack.us/img455/7322/scan100059ud.jpg
This was from yesterday. Again, I WILL finish it. It's the only one I rate as satisfactory right now. But I am sure by next week I will hate it too...

hey!
I really like your linework! looks great and it seems like you got way more than only the basics down :-)
I LOVE your faces...
But yeah, you're right, your painting needs training. Though the pic doesnt look that bad, i think you should try to learn something about colors and stuff. I don't know anything about painting either but would also like to...

Ello ello ello,
Like embee said, i really love your linework. You have a great technique and style!
Firstly, you are great with the good old pencil, your shading and rendering are fantastic. Wow if you keep this up you would be even greater!
Your characters have really good emotion and i love them too. And maybe, your paint could use a bit of practise, but you will soon improve!
Cya later, and keep on drawing!

I think the distance between the eyes a bit off. I'm told the distance inbetween eyes is supposed to be the length of one of the eyes themselves. Maybe race is a factor though so I may be wrong. It's pretty sweet though.

Hey Eric, thanks for the compliment! Yea I am still trying to figure out how to do contrast right... I think I scatter my contrast too much... makes the picture look unfocused which undermines the contrast.

on the top one sickkkk armor dude but the afce is kinda ehhh... i like your loose work the bottom one has some good potential and good angle
Sigh, yea the face is kinda like wtf. At first I liked it but then I fucked it up.
The loose work is a pretty good representation of how I start out my drawings.
styler, It's a wheel actually lol. I will try to make it more like a wheel...

Hello everyone, sorry for the lack of update. It's not because I haven't been drawing but because my drawings are seriously sucking lately.
I started trying some comic drawings.... Wow I suck major balls.
Here are three. By the way, they don't connect. Wow now I look at them, they are REALLY light. It was because I was using a 2H pencil for some of the panels. I will make them darker when I have time.

http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/6541/app00029ix.jpg
http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/3532/app00055ps.jpg
I have also decided to study more about values.
By the way, Dreck gave me an excellent advice, he told me to use a 2B+ pencil. The only one I had was a 4B. So many of the following are 4B. This is part of the reason why I suck because I am not used to this new media yet. But mostly it is because I just suck.
Here is a refence drawing:

some of them look like they could be slightly darker in some spots. The area to the right of the face on #1 is kindof confusing (at first it seems as if it's together because of the similarity in contrast). It took me a bit to seperate the hair from the other lines to the right of it. Maybe you could darken the hair line on the right a bit to seperate it from those other lines or erase them? Perhaps the bottom line on #1 could be darkened to show more contrast since there would be a shadow under her like what you did on # 5. On #2 the left leg doesn't make sense to me but I might be looking at it wrong. On #3 the proportions don't seem right.. I'm not sure about the face on the 2nd to last one. I think the most realistic looking one is the one with the girl on the desk and the coolest looking one is the last one. I hope any of this helps, keep posting!

Hey Styler, thanks for the critiques man. The Life Drawings lacked contrast mainly because I didn't have enough time. I will definitely work on my comtrast though.

not much to say about your t-dome comic...I like it alot, it's tight.
I think that the contrast could've been pushed a little more on the 4 directly above the t-dome. They are not nearly as interesting as your top 2 and your t-dome stuff. The forms looked good though.

Thanks Styler, yea it seems like most of the problems with my drawings have to do with the contrast... that's really all I've been starting to learn right now as well. >< Hopefully I will do better next time.

They're called Blanka (Blanca?) and Dhalsim :-)
I think that on the non-ref pics, some proportions are off and that you've tried to safe the piece by rendering over it. I think you should first of all try to establish the basic linework and then go over it with your rendering (which is pretty awesome by the way). This would improve your drawing a lot.

hey again, to be honest im a bit dissapointed of ur td piece u got a lot work that is better. Maybe it's cause u started to late (like me) ;)
Ur piece is very stiff no movment no point of attention and considering that it is a entry for a competition u should fill the page completly till the edges.
ok that was the harsh start sry for that but take this image for example
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v21/ThreeEyesWorm/Scan200w07.jpg
it's a lot better eventhough it might just be a sketch for u. u have cut out figures with different gestures (directions) the worked out girl clearly gives us a center of attention. while the cut out guy in the front helps the viewer to "step" into the picture and leads him towards the girl.
What i want to say is that u should think about where u want ur viewer to look at u need to establish atleast one center of attention. the viewer will always be atracted by faces darker values (contrast) and high lvl of detail.
Use those to guide him. Don't get cought up in rendering out values all over the place.
Don't get me wrong i realy like those new sketches oly ur entry is kinda bad compared to the stuff u recently did. they show that ur gettin alot better with ur movments and i also see some cool designs in there. keep pushin urself i think ur gettin closer to some of ur fav sketch artists!
