Hey Polina. The drawings are fantastic! It's also interesting to see how you construct your figures. How about a brief background of you drawing experience?

I really like how youve added all the curves. I can never find people like this to draw when I want to find something on the net though :( they are all skinny model types. These look really good though :)

Heheh. Yeh I meant like who your teachers are, how long you have been drawing for..etc. Anything along those lines.

Well I started figure drawing in 2000 It was on and of and mostly actually consited of animal sketches. It wasn't untill 2003 that I really made improvements and started studing the form.

My teachers where Charles Hu, Kevin Chen, and Sergio Sanchez. I also resently took a 4 day workshop with Steve Huston :rendered:

Those are beautiful!
The line are good. The figures are acurate and pretty.
Maybe the only issue is the transition between the illuminated area and the
shadow area for the skin.

Since they are quick sketch it should be fine if there is no transition between those.

PolinaH,

If that is you in the self-figurative portrait then I am humbled by my chauvanistic assumption that you were a male artist. Based on some of the comments in this thread, I wasn't the only one. At least I am in good company. Edgar Degas was repotedly stunned when he met Mary Cassatt, having never met another woman with her level of skill at drawing & painting.

Excellent drawings. They are constructed well and have a nice energy.

Yet another slower day then usual. Hopefully it'll end now that I bought some smooth newsprint finally (I've been using rough recently since I tried the Canson Bigge Pad (note they never tell you the texture) [It sucks so bad in my opinion]).

Anyways enough with my ranting and raving =) heres the art:

Thank you Polina. Your drawings are very useful information for me. I'm gonna return to them many times. I can see how the method works step by step. I like how you add curves after construction of primary lines finished. Very believable.

This is some great stuff, it flows so nicely. Do you have any sort of process you go through or certain things you put down first when doing your quick drawings? It kind of looks like you put down the head, torso, and hips then the legs and arms...?

Hey there, you got some great stuff here! Im jsut about to start my autumn figure drawing class in two weeks time, and you really inspired me as to what I would like to get out of them! Great with the prog. pics and that you explained how you build your figures! Keep posting!

BTW do you have any nudes in other mediums? (charcoal, waters, pastels, inks etc)

I and all others im sure would love to see them!

Yes I have some in charcoal, but they're in my portfolio which isn't with me at the current moment.

Also I'd like to note you guys would be seeing more head drawings from me shortly, as the workshop I attended for figure has now changed to head drawing. =( I'm not so good at heads... but still worth the time to practice... =)

I just finsihed this painting last night, I hope it comes out right on everyones screen, I still haven't invested into a calibration device (Hopefully next month I can purchase one)

Anyways I still need to varnish it so if the darks look kind of dull the newer photo later will hopefully bring them out.

I absolutely love the color in the painting you just posted. I'm always so hesitant when it comes to pushing contrasting colors, especially the light and shadow play that you have there. I'd think you went just a tad too cold there, it gives the figure a certain metallic coldness?

Loving the sketch as well. It's just so clean, the simplicity of lines are just mind blowing to me.
Keep posting your work!

Polina, tremendous improvement! I love that painting! the lighting and how it effects the figure is very good.

btw... Sergio was an awesome teacher. He's just as good as Ignatz, but approaches his paintings in a very different approach. Right when he begins, he throws down these intensly bright colors of purples, greens, and reds. Almost like an impressionist painting. It's amazing.

Really wow! I'd love to take sergio for painting... LAAFA's kinda far for me though... and with now being an official art center student my free time has been sqwashed for extra classes. (Maybe on a term off)
I wish he'd have a figurative drawing or painting workshop again instead of a head drawing one. That way I could at least listen to him teach while I do homework.... maybe I'll go whine to the department chair on Monday.....

Anyways I have more art coming soon, but I have a ton of drawings to do for Art Center... so when I free up sometime I'll take photos and post those up =)
I warn you though they'll be mostly class assignments XP

if you go to workshops... you'll find me there. I'm usually the girl who's not dressed too well, i usually like to go in baggy pants and a Tshirt. (I'm not sure thats really descriptive)

cateaic: i haven't had time to go to the head drawing workshop.. ARt center reallyboggles me down with work... i rarely get done with my homework by saturday morning. But definantly next term =) i have a head and hands class.

Christian0710: I really don't use any books i have glen vilppu but i've only looked through it.. I use anatomy books though... Golfried Bames - Der Nackte Mensch is the one I refrence the most when trying to find my anatomy. Construction and Flow just come with practice. Of course my instructures started me on it but the practice is what really developed it.

i have figure drawings coming later today =)

OMG, Polina, what a beauty your new update is! there are some little flaws, but they are not important when looking how gorgeous and clean these figures are. The one on the top of the second page is perfect (where the modes is resting). Next to it the little figure in the middle of the page my favorite too.
On the first page the two lying down figure are very nice, proportions are great and there is so much truth in these figure, I adore this.
Two left figures have a slightly too short torses and legs comparing to head, in my opinion, but I might be wrong.
Beautiful work, I saved , want to look and study those. Thank you!

Sveta: Thankyou

Christian0710: Anatomy's great but make sure u get foundation first.. because no amount of anatomy will save you unless you have the general shapes. I'm still working on my anatomy I'm only confident with the front of my torso but I loose it in the back, legs, and arms. =/ the shapes int he back are harder to see.

I've been practicing on and off for 5 years? The first 2 years i didn't improve much because i was to timid to try different teachers and i didn't practice because i was in highschool. then i took a year break around senior year for stupid reasons to get partying out of my system . Then once out of highschool I started taking teachers that got me to start really seeing the body. and then for a year before I got into artcenter (which was just this spring term) I just attended workshops.

My smooth lines aren't really from the medium, I've learned that the way you sharpen your pencil really effects your line quality. It's also based on prefrence, I like to peal off at least an inch of the pencil... and sharpen it to a point, all my teachers say I could kill people with my pencils. lol.

But heres my Materials:
-Smooth Newsprint
Drawing medium depends on my mood:
-Lyra Charchoal Pencil (Medium)
-Primo EuroBrand Charchoal HB - 3B (really hard to find now and days =/ they seemed to replace them with ritmor and I don't like ritmor that much)
-Carbothelo 1400/640 or1400/645
-Kohinoor Red Chalk Pencil (I cant give you the exact name of this pencil.. I finished mine and i had bought it in europe... luckily i got one of the teachers at artcenter to request it for me so the student store should soon be carring it)
-Kohinoor Hardtmuth Rudka (I dont use the holder for this I just like to use the stick of lead)
-Yarka Sangwena
-Tomboy Brush pen/ Fountain brush pen by some japanese company (ran be about 37$ for the pen at artcenter)
-Stanford Uniball pen

When i get into rendoring
-Alphacolor Charcoal
-Alphacolor White Pastel
-Conte stick
-Lyra Pencil

Thank you so much!! I just graduated from high school so im taking a year off just doing lots of drawing. After that I want to get into animation collage. I don’t really know so many of the materials that you use, but ill look into it. I have hard newsprint, and I use pastel pencils or compressed charcoal. I usually sharpen an inch of just like you so that I can almost lay the pencil parallel to the picture plane. Actually I just made a post with some of my pictures. Not at good as yours. It takes time and practice like you said.
So do you constantly sharpen your pencil like every pose or something like that??

Thanks again.

PolinaH
March 11th, 2006, 07:35 PM
I usually sharpen between sets. (Once every 25 minutes)

I'd recomend not completely taking the year off, take some classes at institutions LAAFA or community colleges. that way something always keeps you going, because human intuition is to rest when available. I worked and went to Pasadena City college after highschool. Worked and went to school up to art center. (that way I got most of my GED out of the way =) )

Yea you are right. Actually I do drawing and reading everyday. I want to get into an animation collage in Denmark, where they only accept 25 students every year. Before going to It, I am going to a good drawing school that hopefully will qualify me for the collage. I know its easy to waste time doing nothing, but I try not to waste time. It looks like you have been reading Burne Hogarth “Dynamic figure drawing” Just looks like you use his methods?

The beauty in your nude female studies is most evident in your graceful skill in showing the sensuality in femininity.
This is showcased most obviously in your drawing of hips, lower tummies and buttocks. Most people draw these areas and they end up with something that feels plastic, but with yours (and with such as small amount of lines) you manage to capture mass, weight and realism.
Aside from that, the only crit I had with the last images was the girl sitting with her back to us (on the lower left) had her head out of proportion to her body.
I always look forward to seeing more of your work.
