This is my first image post here. I made this from a reference pic in a national geographic. I'd like some comments or critiques on my painting technique, keep in mind im suffering with a mouse here.

while I like the direction this one is heading I think it could still use some work (take my comments as you will though, I'm hardly an established painter!). Other than the forms being cleaned up a but, the main things that bother me are the muddy colour of the front image, this may be from using black to much in the shading? I'm not really sure, also his skin color is almost the same as his clothing. I'd like to see more variation in tone between the 2 surfaces to make the image easier to read.

Also the rear figure, seems awkward the way you have darkened the green around his head. While I like the idea of doing this to make the figure stand out more, it seems a little obvious. Also because the figure is dark, perhaps lightening the background around him would be more effective?

Anyway keep at it, I look forward to seeing the progression :)

Thanks a bunch for the comments. I kinda did this roughly from a pic and I guess there was a stain behind the guys head on the wall so it was darker but since I'm doing it rough I see how that might not look right. I'm not sure if I really want to work on this anymore, unless I get a tablet or something. I think I'll try doing some more stuff like this with real, yes real, paint. I just did my first real painting a few weeks ago and I really liked the result. I guess the guy is really dirty so the colors are close to his clothes but I think I picked colors for his clothes from the face after I had already colored it. Yeah, if you want to see any more of my stuff lee I posted some of it at the sijun forums a long time ago so you can search for me. None of it is any good though, oh well.

alrighty, adjusted it a bit here and there. I think I'm gonna buy a tablet before I go into doing lots of detail, but I need some cash first:rolleyes:

Your second picture is done quite nicely.I like how you removed/blend the halo over the hat and it gives the picture added depth. Good job.

i really like this one.

Theres something about the desaturated tones and the contrast of the colors.... The distortion in the figures, esspecially the way the back one looks like its melting...The roughness of it and the obvious marks in the backgroud give it a surreal feeling of wrongness somehow, which is what struck me about the piece.

Im sure most of this was unintentional, and from your comments about the mouse, I guess your not satisfied with this painting. I however like it. I wouldnt touch a thing.

Thanks! Haha, yes, that was unintentional. But you can interpret what I was trying to do with the painting however you like :D .
