hey all...

I just got back from NYC this past weekend. I was fortunate to spend some time with an old friend who is studying there at the waterstreet atelier.

I was able to see a large batch of his studies that he has done this past year. Here are a few images of his. He has piles of these. The quality is consistent..and while he claims to have a long long way to go, I found them to be beautiful.

Wow!

I'm going to ask the really cliche'd question: "Are these all pencil?"

Awesome work! :chug:

Nice, Dobsky!!

Very tight. Very polished. Reminds me of Seurat's academic drawings...

Very inspiring.

Are there special techniques they use to get taht type of shading? It looks so photo-realistic, Ive never been able to get my shading to that point by using just a pencil..

its a pencil...no smudging...all done on the point. slowly and patiently filling in the proper values.

accuracy is key...

These are absolutely amazing. I love the control he has on these, it's something I've been trying to practice, it's exceedingly difficult though.

Jason, just a quick question, do you know how they structure the program at Water Street and how much it costs?

This guy is a gem!
Amazing ability
It is more pleasurable to look at his realism than the realism of actual photos.

I need to practice more. If he has a long way to go I have oceans to cross. Time to get back to cast drawings.

Wow!!!
Mr. Dobsky sure has grown since he was a student at Ringling. If his drawing has improved this much, I want to see his paintings too! That homeless guy is still waiting in the median of 41. Thanks for sharing these, Jason.

Wow I haven't seen them before.

May I hijack this thread and ask what
all done on the pointmeans exactly?
I read it in "Drawing The Heads And Hands" before I think ...
but I'm not sure I get the meaning.

The second one is VERY familliar.. Maybe someone on the boards had the same model ? Or your friend posted somewhere ?.. This is awesome btw.

Signature: means no smudging. Only with the tip of the pencil like Jason said. This must've been taking forever.

Jason,

Do you (or your friend) have a suggestion as to what is the best way to contact the Water Stree Atelier? I tried emailing twice but didnt get a response. I also cannot find a working phone number. Thank you for any info you can provide!

I think Jacob Collins is the founder of the WSA. There are are few great places to study that academic style in the NYC area. The New York Academy of Figurative Art being one of them.
Christopher Pugliese is also starting his own private atelier. Darn...if only i had the time and money...Well worth it.
