Hi,
Finally , finally started my own personal CA sketchbook ! Whooa, i'm all excited :) All crits , suggestions are much appreciated . I want to improve ! :)
i'll start with a funky self portrait as way to introduce myself . It has anatomical issues, doesn't really look like me, ...... he, but i still kinda like it :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/toram/zelfportret-funky0001.jpg
Sometimes , i like to doodle at work (bartender at a restaurant) a bit when its quiet :
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/toram/face-side.jpg
This was from a movie screenshot, but i don't remember wich one. Note to myself !! : don't think rendering a bad drawing is gonna make it better !!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/toram/oude-man.jpg
Two doodles, unfinished, they're just details of a bigger page. No ref. well actually , sometimes i start drawing from life and the person stands up and leaves after a minute and then i try to finish the drawing outa my head or play with it a little bit :

Hi man - this is a really cool start. Strong self portrait and really nice pencil work. I only see some small anatomical issues - the prime evil - mostly around the ears. But it looks like that should be easy for you to get under control.
Keep it up and keep posting! :^^:

I know what your saying about trying to draw people in public. They just don't sit still like a good life drawing model.

Your auto portrait is really cool, but why you have put that green strokes, I just don't like them. On the second picture I can see some letters through the paper. Just a tip, put a black paper on the paper when you scan in order to get rid of the junk on the other side! Try to finish the drawing of the old man it is very nice.

Hi people,
fellah : Thanks man, i see what you mean with the ears, i'll keep that in mind;
Mentler : thanks! means a lot coming from you :)
Stokes : Thank you, love your sketchbook btw
Glikster : Thanks
bumskee : Thanks, altough next time i'll try to actually make it look like me :)
PHATandy : yeah, i sketched the underline with green pencil and then rendered
it with a normal mechanical pencil. seems not such a good choice
But thanks anyway
Unit18 Nate : I know. but it still is an excellent way to learn.
Ivan R : Thanks for the tip man , and i'll definately loose the green pencil, haha :)
jacobsteel : Thanks
Now some new sketches, not really happy with this new batch, but hey what the heck, it"s just a sketchbook right ? :
This drawing was to illustrate the grandmother- grandchild relationship and it was meant as a gift to someone dear to me ;) it's still a WIP tough. And It sucks that it such a bad scan. Drawing too big to fit on scanner so don't mind the terrible composition for now . I'll post the finished version properly, i promise :
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/toram/tekening-gerda.jpg
Did these 2 while watching a film earlier, can't remember wich one :
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/toram/soldaat-met-sigaret.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/toram/soldaat-met-paard.jpg
2 portrets: one of my dad, quickly from life, has lots of errors but strangely still has a good resemblance :) and one that's still a WIP for a friend , from a picture :
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/toram/papa-portret2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v12/toram/kevin.jpg
Both done in a bar, was bored and waiting for someone, second one from life :

Great drawings man! You're sp just kicks ass. The grandmas rendering is very nice. My only suggestion is to give your drawings more contrast, for example i think if you make the eye region of you father's portrait darker, it would look much better. Once again I ask the question :bashful: : have you tried using ink mediums? i think it would suit your drawing well.
Greetings!

Wow, I am stunned! The first picture in the new post is really great! I also like a lot the second and the drawing of your father. The nostril of the horse is quite big and the legs of the men on the horse are very short. The hair of the boy is very well drawn but the lower lip seems big to me. Great work I am impatient to see more!
I have seen that you are Belgian. So do you speak French? Si c'est le cas je préfère t'écrire en français.

September 17th, 2005, 05:52 AM
ahah nice update man, your pencil work is really great.
What i was trying to say is about your faces. Is in some cases (possibly the non ref ones??) you tend to squish the faces a bit.
ie. the distance between the bottom of the lips and the eyebrows comes squashed on the whole size of the head. so it looks like they have a big forhead..
I think its most obvious in you last update- on the picture of the side on view of the girls head -0 with the eyes closed. Here face looks a little squashed. Maybe make them a little longer - compared tofeature sizes and width etc.
Good work though, theres really great stuff here.

Hi,
Fellah : Thanks again man. it's always joy looking trough your pages :)
PhatAndy : I understand what your saying but i'm having difficulty seeing what you see. In most of the drawings the foreheads look fine to me :( the squashing of the faces is clearer to me now. i'll work on that , thanks mate
Here's the finished version of the drawing i posted earlier.

I don't have to say, it's about time (especially since I haven't updated mine in almost as long....I'm gonna get on it, I swear!)
I love your style... my only crit is on this last finished face. I think it might be there's not enough contrast in the face... but something is throwing me off. Also, his teeth seem completely blown out. Otherwise.... gorgeous updates!

I really thought I had already replied in this thread once :)
You really got it going man, I see you got good control over your pencil
The two drawings of your girlfriend are two of the best in here.. i'm actually pretty jealous of that second one. A bit of a shame that the sharpness of the hand and the head isn't really there in the rest of the body.
Where do you go to school btw??

Hey all,
glikster : Thanks man, i know about the teeth.
Jens : Thanks dude, the body is indeed a bit sloppy, compared to the hand and head, thanks for pointing that out. I don't go to school anymore. Used to study animation in Brussels. Working as a waiter now.

Hi Ca 'ers !
Couple of people asked me to show some of my drawings I do from imagination.
Well, to tell you the truth, I think that's one of my weak points. Really have to work on that. But I plan to start drawing more and more stuff without ref. I started drawing more intensely over the last couple months, and realy been enjoying it. So I'm gonna try to push it as far as I can.
Thanx for all the support guys !
- vigostar : Oh man ! you're just too nice :)
- That fat kid : I'm glad to hear that kid, thanks. But I stand by my reply ;)
- bumskee : :) Thanks man! Looking forward to it myself
- ApolloNuevo : Thanks. Yeah , I tried that but I didn't came out the way I wanted
- ebrowning : Yeah, been seeing the progression a little myself, Fun! Thanks dude , realy motivating reply !
- Placeboast : Thanks a lot , honoring man :)
- dCepT : Thanks. I tend to draw faces automatically, have to work on that. For now : look below and there you go ...
Started doodling , No ref. , letting my pencil slide across my paper random and this is what came out , fairly happy with it. Gonna post more imagination stuff from now on. I'm hooked and there's no way back !!!! Anyway hope you like :

Nice studies and pencil technique. Reminds me I have work to do. I would watch the proportions on some of the "out of mind" drawings like in post #63. The demon is well drawn, but his hands looks smallish and his forearm might be a tad thin. Still, lot of talent floating around in here, keep it up!

superskillfull dude... i really like the quick gestures.. i have tons of trouble doing those.. i can get the one minute but, never under that... the ink washed painting is really nice... but, your realistic portraits are really superb...! Just a little thought about the imaginative drawing... I used to have a huge problem drawing from my imagination.. alot of my early drawings looked teh same... my GF would always say.. Draw something different... And whjat I learned is to just draw... draw some weird very light shapes... and be attentive to the forms being created... you'll see figures forming and images appearing... and then most of the time your hand does most of the drawing... Im personally one of those people who have tons of trouble being creative but, I think alot about my drawings now and are more patient.. that seems to help alot.. also.. really diving into an artist that you admire and just read the artwork created... things start to pop in your mind... techniques and ideas... i get alot of ideas when im laying in bed right before fallingout... maybe have a small notebook and the side of your bed to jot down some notes for ideas actually thats a great idea in general.. ok, im rambling now..thanks for sharing..
armando

maybe have a small notebook and the side of your bed to jot down some notes for ideas actually thats a great idea in general..
haha, I do the exact same thing. I first started doing it because I couldn't sleep, kept thinking of the same idea over and over, writing it down helped me finish the thought.
All these head studies look good. Your friend's portrait from Sep 19 looks exactly like Frank Sinatra. One thing to work on would be light on the basic forms, which is explained in Loomis's "Successful Drawing", that'll clean up your rendering and get rid of the unnessessary marks. The blue painting looks really cool, that kind of watercolor painting is worth further study.

Saw that ink-piece in Prague.. you should definately do more! It came out with a nice mood.. And the freezing certainly didn't detract anything from the piece :) Happy accidents..hehe

Still in pain that I did not get to instruct in Prague ‡ will put together major US annual workshop myself ‡ with major league figurative instructors
Your short pose work is very strong, as is the one long pose ‡ the long pose has lost a little vitality but that is a common problem ‡ and since none of us wish to be common I tell my students to do thumbnails and studies until the model gets (relaxes) into the pose ‡ the pose changes a great deal for the first 10 to 15 minutes <> on very long poses I have my workshops members go through the whole first setting of 25 or 30 minutes just doing thumbnails and shorter drawing from 2 or 3 angles so that they really understand the pose

Sorry about the crappy way of saying good byes at the airport. I went to look for the right port and then the airport staff asked me to come and x-ray my stuff and so on. But it was great to see you in person there in Prague.

Hey, your drawing from Prague are really nice, I didn't see what you were working on during the workshop. I really like the sketch of the under lit model. Gestures are nice too. I don't know if I'm gonna be able to make it out for fooseball, I've got a lot of stuff to wrap up out here, but we'll see.

Your work makes me love pencil, you can almost here the sound of the hatching from many of these drawings.
Woah, and the imagination sketch, keep doing those! I heard john howe just keeps sticking more pages down and carrying on these doodles/concepts.
It looks as though he is some demon captain, maybe about to lead his horrific legions into battle!
More Please!

Cheers for the crit in the critique section....You have really nice, confident line work. The work from life is brilliant and apart from tiny anatomy problems with the fantasy stuff its all great!!!!! The title in next to you avatar says you are painting! When you are done post some in here, this book is lacking some colour! :P
Oh and also, this is one of the few sketchbooks i've looked at today that have slow loading images, I dont know if this is an issue with the forum or photobucket. But some of them havent loaded in the last 5 - 10 minutes..

Thanks for popping by my thread a while ago. Would like to see the finished version of the SP. Your rendering skills are excellent. There really is no point me giving you any critique 'cause you obviously know what you are doing. Will have to keep following your thread. Four stars from me.

i like how your pencil strokes follow the follow the contours of your figures and portraits. I'm really in awe in how it plays out in your drawings - even though I've seen it in other places before.
i also like the blue ink drawing that froze. i'm going to try that sometime.
