well i really like it too... nice style and i think the face is believable
a few things, though: there's a highlight on the side of the nose that is too sharply defined -> result is that it seems to be a gleaming edge (i.e. square plastic nose)
another thingy is the dark shadow on the cheek closest to the viewer: again a little too sharp, suggesting rigid "edges" that you wouldn't have in a face.
(or am I wrong here, I'm far from a pro myself...)?

Quite nice! Very evoative. Reminds me of Jon Muth's work.
That the dark tones are great for mood, not so much for the form. You clearly understand facial anatomy to a high degree, which makes your piece so successful...perhaps a slight fill light from the left might add more interest. It can be *extremely* subtle, perhaps just a bounced light from a theoretical wall to the character's left. That might also help the center of the face resolve as per David's response.
My advice: Keep ignoring your teacher. :-)

I love this!!!!! It's fantastic. I love the colors and the lighting and the mood. What general color palette did you use to achieve those flesh tones...I love the flesh tones. I actually don't mind that little glint of light on the nose...I like it. Great stuff man post some more!

heeey, thanks for the responses people. personally, i like that little gleam of light on the nose as well, but i can see what you guys are saying about a little bit of reflective light on the dark side of his face.
its my personal taste, but it appeals to me a lot when faces are very chiseled. I know it doesnt happen in real life to the degree that it is painted above, but thats whats so attractive about it, such as the exaggerated muscles of a comic character... but thats just my taste.
uh... i didnt know who jon muth is so i looked him up and hes nice... but i dont like his drawings.
however, i'll take the advice you guys gave, and thanks for the responses you guys!

I looove this pulp fiction-tarantino-pacino-whatever-gangstersinsuits-style.
This character looks so cool to me and the composition of this pic is also just great!
I know just a few guys who can catch this style very cool.
You can count yourself to those.
