Hey Oregano. I sympathize with you over the job opportunity. I have had that happen to me. Maybe not a dream job that I really really wanted but nevertheless a job that I would have liked anytime over the one that I have now. However I think you struck gold with the children's book illustration idea. I think you really have what it takes for that. I see your sketches and if I was a kid I would have loved to have your art in my books when I read them. I really see you doing that.

hey folks - thanks for the replies - they always mean a lot to me and do a wonderous job of keeping me going :bashful: . I don't have time to respond at the moment, but I wanted to pop on by and drop off a couple of things for you to check out.

No activity here has been replaced by lots of activity behind the scenes. I'm currently putting together a children's book dummy for submission to various publishers here in the next couple of months.

I also have a new art show at one of the banks near where I live which has been recieved wonderfully. It's the first time I've shown any of my digital and illustrative work publically and the response has been fantastic. I've even gotten a fine art commission out of it!

There's more, but not enough solid yet to post about. So, in the mean time, here's some art.

Cheers, and thanks!

Hey guys, again thanks for the replies :)

Ben - thanks for the support, man. Really glad you like the sample page there - just wait until you see some of the others >:D I'm pulling out some stops for this and having a blast with it. All kinds of goofy fun :bashful: Needless to say, I hope it gets picked up as well. I could get used to doing this type of stuff really fast.

chaosrocks - heyas. Thanks. Yeah, not MIA. More running silent for a while. I'll be popping in and out as the mood strikes. Glads you likes.

masque - hey bro, <homer simpson voice>mmmmmmmm psuedo zens</voice> hehe, too true. This past year has proven that to be far too true in my life. Thanks for the congrats! :rendered:

Mike - heya man. I'm still wanting to head down to Seattle, but with the way my schedule is shapping up, I really don't know when that's going to be. Here in the next week I'll be starting work 6 days a week with two jobs and still trying to handle commissions, family time, eating and sleeping. With any luck, the children's book thing will turn out to be a life saver that I need.

Dako - hey dude! Long time no hear. I often wonder what happened to you. I miss the "old days" as well. There was a good art vibe going on there. I really regret that things came unraveled. Very glad to hear that you are still sticking with things. I'll have to pop over to your sketchbook and see how things are coming.

anyway, for the mean time, here's a digital I did this evening based on a view I see every day driving home. Hope you like.

Cheers all.

small dump of unrelated stuff and a couple of photos for gits and shiggles.

Lets see...

there's a page of pencils for the children's book. You can see I'm really being technical about it. That's an 8.5x11 sheet of printer paper with mechanical pencil sketches. There's also a sketch page with a cameo critter for th book - can you guess which one?:bashful: Also, included for no particular reason is my work station and a tree that fell in our yard a couple of weeks ago.

Anyway, cheers all.

I was violently reminded why I don't use .rif files with Painter yesterday.

Observe 9 hours of painting lost :$ (yes, 9 hours. I paint slow and these are both fairly detail intensive and actually pretty big - 12 x 19 inches. I don't wanna hear it).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v25/Oregano/BlogArt/pages-7---8_test-yuck.jpg

And here's the repaint:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v25/Oregano/BlogArt/pages-7---8_test-repaint-2.jpg

Anyway, the goal is painting them as opposed to line art with ink wash.

Whoah, that last one I REALLY like the translucent edges on it. Especially that back appendage draping over the pole; really cool. Your oils are lovely too; they've got sort of a washed out quality that says to me 'this is the way it is'. Especially the middle one; its soft, like there's dust hanging in the air. Great stuff! *subscribes* More please =D

Sirio_Brozzi, MeTaL-Mike and MsMaverick - thanks :teeth:

I didn't take this one to the CHOW because I felt that ultimately it was sub-par. That said, my thought with the character was that if she was a princess, she probably wouldn't be doing much of the fighting herself - instead she would be commanding her supporters in the uprising.

Meh. Anyway.

had some helmet issues with the marine guy. The original appearently looked too much like Sarg or Chief or whatever from Halo 3. Reworked it some. Still needs some noodling.

Added the orginal line art. I don't have my scanner hooked up right now, so I used my digital camera to shoot the photo and it didn't clean up very well. So I ended up getting creative with tonal difference - you can see what I did in the final.

Hey Shane,

Whats up brotha. Haha. You need an update. ahh...what can i say, i do too.

Anyways, thank you for your comments on my Acrylics. I really appreciate that coming from you. Yeah, they take time to figure out, i have been using them for a while, and i generally like to paint really fast anyhow. Most of those you see were done in 1 - 3 hrs. So, the drying time doesn't effect me, i usually end up using a blow dryer to make them dry, haha!

So i was looking at your painting, the one you have in the avatar. I really like it man. The alien is top notch, the soldier, i think could use a bit of work. I think you should push it further. I think you should also add a background, like a whole scene behind them, basic, like a landscape or something. It would add a bunch more depth to it and make the image pop even more. What do you think??

Thanks for stopping by my page!

I never thought attempting to get 10 simple faces done in a weeks' time would be so freakin' difficult. I'm still down by two - need two self portraits, one from life. It's not from lack of desire or even trying to shirk the assignment. Day job projects have ballooned and instead of spending 8 hours at work I'm spending 10 - 12. (I work for Sound publishing, doing ads and paginating for two papers, and with the Holidays coming up and a passive-aggressive ad rep, things have gotten a little tense).

anyway, enough blather. Artwork:
(Shot with my digital camera)

First page of faces, done in sequence from left to right.
the first one is a travesty, done without reference as a warm up. The monkey was the last one on this page.

Oh, and here's "Demon Princes," my cat scruff. When she uses her Demon Princes Voice she sounds like Tim Curry from Legend. Otherwise her normal voice is something akin to a Disney cartoon. Don't ask. I'm fried from work and thought it was funny.

These are really great, the practice has done good things for you (still waiting on the SPs though :P)

The first face isn't as bad as you make it out to be, it has some interesting stylization, but you need to get away from that tendency in your work for a bit, you can go back when you've got the other stuff down again.

The second face (the girl) and Bill Murray are quite well done, and nice to see how you can get the face captured quickly and simply (as with the girl) and also how you can get into some serious rendering (as on Bill). His forhead may be a bit too large, though.

On the second page, #7 is my favorite of all of these. That eye is stunning, maybe even haunting. I want to see more of her.

The last one has a great design, he black square framing her and symmetrical composition are top notch.

I'm with demon princess on this... go draw!

Some excellent progress so far... (where are those SPs, though?)

The first one I like the way it is, really... I just want to see the other hand finished. I like how the form almost becomes abstract shapes.

The woman bugs me (apart from the hand thing I mentioned earlier) because she looks too long -- I think it's because her head begins too high which makes her whole torso/trunk look too narrow and long.

The last guy came out well, only the arm on the left (his right) looks much shorter than the right one (his left) and his face feels too wide on the left side. The rendering is stellar though, I especially love the belt.

More now, please k thanks. :^^:

Textures is always something that have bothered me in Painter, any textury brushes out there?
Which brushes do YOU use?

Cool zombiewarrior! :D

S.C. Watson
February 5th, 2008, 10:03 AM
Okay, attached is a layout of how I work, with some explanation - it includes all the brushes I use - I tend to be pretty much an out of the box kind of painter - I don't do a lot (or any) custom brushes. I am going to be posting another small smoke/cloud tut a little later today, so that will work in conjunction with this.

As for textures, since you asked, I'm not too fond of the texture options in Painter, though I am sure you'd be able to find someone that is. I tend to be a bit old school in that I actually paint in textures. I haven't been able to bring myself to really use overlays unless I'm doing some sort of graphic design piece. So, any textures you see in my work are actually painted in.

To do that, I rely on the Digital Water Color Brushes, - Broad Water Color and the salt brushes specifically. Once I dry a layer (ctl+shift+L or Layers > Dry Digital Water Color from the tool bar across the top.

Hope this helps!

Ciao,
~Oreg.

Haha love that last one...Distortion, 'cheap boob jobs'!

Thanks for posting that, I'm still trying to get to grips with Painter myself, trying to make the transfer over from Photoshop. I tend to steer towards oils and watercolours myself, and some pencils.

I like the snowy dino style character you've drawn in post #577, he's great!

Thanks very much!

S.C. Watson
February 8th, 2008, 07:42 PM
I was asked to provide a small tutorial on how I did the smoke for my genie for CHOW (below), so I pulled this together:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v25/Oregano/smoke.gifhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v25/Oregano/final_clouds.jpg

It's pretty straight forward. I used five brushes to do this:
The broad Water Color brush (# 1 in my painter layout above)
The Pure Water Brush (# 5)
The Tinting basic round (# 11)
The Grainy Blender (# 8 )
and the FX Glow Brush to ad the red glow in (#6)

The basic process was this:
Outline where the body of the smoke (or cloud, or wisp, or fog, etc.) goes.
Lay in some basic colour with the the Tinting Basic Round, blend that in with the Grainy Blender till I'm satisfied with it.

From there I ad in a couple of other highlights here and there with the Tinting Round, blending those in as I go along. Once I have a basic body, or form of the cloud in place, I start working with the Broad Water Colour Brush. Keep in mind that I work on ONE LAYER, so if you're working on more than one in Painter, the DIGITAL WATER COLOURS* will not work properly.

I block in colour, blend it out with the Pure Water brush, dry the layer (CTRL+Shift+L or Layers>Dry Digital Water Colour Layer), and then continue. At this point, it's just a series of repeated processes - laying in colour, blending it until it looks the way I want.

Using the fx brush, I add in brighter colour areas - in this case red showing through the smoke - on the genie, it was the brighter green areas around her head, and the occasional spark here and there.

Eventually, I added in the white outline, as I did on the genie's pic, which was orange instead. And, I'm noticing that I could have cleaned that up some :bashful:

Anyway, that's about it. If you've any questions, feel free to pm me.

:ore:

*There are also Water Colours, which are NOT what I use. Make sure you've found the Digital Water Colours, which are listed under "D" :P

Hope you don't mind opinions from the unwashed beginner type, but I noticed that the oil portrait's eyes are off and either the right eye needs to be a little bit higher (her right) or the left, a touch lower. I'm going by the insides of her eyes to judge and it's just the first thing to strike me. It's a beautiful painting otherwise--the background complements her very well.

PuppyKitten - :geekg:

First thumb for a "book cover" concept. Planning on doing this for the portfolio, so crit away please.

A few notes before you open fire:
I'm keeping the story/composition fairly simple, as I wanted it to read well, and quickly. I chose "traditional" roles for the characters not because I didn't want to spice it up some, but again because I wanted to keep it simple and easily identifiable. I'm thinking about adding in a child in the woman's arms. Also considering having the man looking at the woman instead of the battle over the hill.

Also as noted, this is the *first* thumb, and fairly small: roughly about six inches length wise and about 3 tall. Will do a larger redo as I get closer to it.

Not really satisfied with the fore/middle ground right beyond the house there before you get to the trees, so suggestions would be welcome.

And lastly, *yes* it was directly inspired by Donato's Fortune and Fate (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=124909) - you'll see what I mean.

Anyway, crit at will.
(poor will) :P

PuppyKitten
May 4th, 2008, 01:02 AM
For a first thumb it looks great. You know I have a composition-weakness so take all this with a grain of salt, but...

The way his head hits the underside of the roof bugs me a little. Also, that ALMOST unbroken vertical line of the wall seems to really separate them from the rest of the piece more than I think you want it to. Breaking it with the arm is a good idea, but maybe that's too subtle...

The "traditional role" concept is so rarely embraced these days, that I think you've actually made your piece stand out as original just for doing that, so I wouldn't fret a bit on that aspect of it.

The anatomy looks really nice on the guy (he has a big hand, but it's just a thumbnail so who cares). I think her pose would look more natural if she were holding something large. A baby like you were thinking would make sense. Or some worldly possessions like she's about to flee the town...

I can't wait to see what you do with that yummy looking bg. I can see some really intriguing atmosphere building up there. :D

S.C. Watson
May 4th, 2008, 11:12 AM
DefiledVisions - Thanks for the kind works :) Keep those pencils close at hand!

DanielC - Thanks!

Hai!^^ - Thanks!

PuppyKitten - Good point about the vertical line of the house. I had wanted that pretty solid to visually separate the "domestic" or "normal" world from the "Call to Adventure" (the war in the background) but I can see how it's a little too solid. I'll break that up some - plus I like the idea of what a more broken line there can mean... Good call - Thanks!

and here's a couple from last night/this morning:

First one is just a doodle - sort of a play off the space trucker / Han Solo/Chewbacca thing.

The second one is a rough redesign for one of the many, many alien races that I have had floating around in my head for the past 20+ years. I'll probably do a full, more balanced shot of them later. I just wanted to get the head structure down. One of the key points is that this species doesn't have "eyes" the way we think of them - no orbs. They have instead a dark patch of nerve bundles on the front of their face that picks up visible light. If you can imagine a sort of rough optically sensitive "mole" on your skin, that's what this would be. Instead of colouring (the optic "patch" is black) each individual would have one shaped differently.

All the best,
~Oreg.

Wasker - Thanks!

Salacuis - Thank you for your kind words, and my apologies for not getting right back to you. You bought my book!? Why thankyou! If only I got royalties... sigh... ;)

Yes, Moebius is just... right! His mark making and eye for detail just look spot on, regardless whether he's doing environments or characters. My favourite was The Airtight Garage which I first read in Heavy Metal years a go.

The pencil work on the ChOW's is excellent. I think the first character could perhaps have elongated arms a bit more, make him 'stringier', but maybe that's just me! :)

Quinn Simoes thanks for the comments - unfortunately I ended up not going with either, or any, but they were fun to do regardless :geekg:

RandAlThor - I don't use graphite dust, but I do use a stomp that I've had forever - I swear I could draw with the thing. Plus, I have a chamee? chamoi? (how the f*ck do you SPELL THAT?) A small leather cloth the I use to wipe the line drawing to give it a base tone other than white. From there it's mostly pencil work with strategic erasings. Hope that helps :)

kidult - thanks :)

HunterKiller_ critters are fun :P

Salacuis - I'll swing by and post some crits.

Poshspice - I did indeedy :) Though I'm still waiting for it to arrive :er: A true shame about the royalties - perhaps with the next one? Though I do know with some of the smaller publishing houses, you don't always get royalties - or was this a POD project, if you don't mind my asking (I didn't see who the publisher was).

I discovered Moebius in Heavy Metal as well, when I was about ten, and never connected stories with their titles, so I'm not sure which one you're referencing (I currently only have a fairly hefty collection of cards that a friend gave me, much to my shame - I need to pick up a collection or something!) But his line work made an impression on me that never really wore off.

Drat! I should have thought of the longer arms - you're right of course! that would really ad a nice nasty element to that guy :geekg:

Pat - Hey man, thanks for stopping by! Long time no see :) And than you for your comments, it's means a lot.

GusTheRobot Glad I got your interest up :geekg: but I've decided to play this one close so I'll not be posting anything further regarding the DEEP project until it's done/time for poll. :needle:

Iridyse - I haven't gotten quite comfortable with colour yet - at least digitally. I'm thinking about doing some work in oil, which I have more of a background in, but I'm trying to figure out a working process that will suite my needs - also looking at printers that will print larger than 8x11 because I want to be able to take sketchbook pages and move them to the type of paper that I work on. We'll see... :ore:

Camara aw, thanks! :teeth:

stoph thanks man :)

Goog Thanks!

Hive_minD Heres' a poor sampling of s'moar :P

Maidith See above :P

Pascallo Thanks! Glad you like 'em :)

Jake Kobrin Thanks, Jake. That actually makes two of us. I think at this point I can honestly say that quite possibly I've given up digital for good. I won't say that *won't ever* use it again, but I just simply can't get the results that I want with digital stuff. That, and at the end of the day, any artwork I've done digitally is stuck in the computer... :(

Amir the night wolf Am doing so - although a little slower than what i'd like for multiple reasons. Mostly because I'm funneling *A LOT* of energy into the DEEP project, but other reasons as well. (like a day job... :er: )

Bojee Hey man! thanks! :teeth:

Ash888 Thanks, they're a lot of fun to do :)

Salacuis I am indeedy. Still workin' on stuff :P

solorpower Good God, Juan, long time no see! Hope everything is well at your end of the universe. Thanks for stopping by :)

Whelp. Here it is. My Deep entry. It developed a life of its own, and I ended up with something that I think doesn't quite fit the guidelines, but I'm satisfied with it.

[I've got a few stupid typos here and there. I'm aware of them, but don't have time to fix them].

Oregano your version of Smaug was excellent. I really thought his expression and figure really caught the idea that this was a old, deep dragon. And although I liked the body on some of the other dragons better, the head on your Smaug was easily the best. Truly the Dragon of dragons. His head captured the slow to anger look, but incredible power hiding beneath that a creature like Smaug might have known. I don't know if it would have helped to color it, but I thought that the monochromatic version was awesome. Keep up the good work.

Aly Fell
July 17th, 2008, 05:06 AM
I thought your Smaug was fantastic!. You really got his character which is truly what the ChOW is all about. The characters in post 697 are beautifully realised; like some twisted Wizard of Oz Tin man. It's good to see you really refining your pencil technique so much. And as crazy3dman says you should be really proud of your Deep entry. :)

Oof! I really need to pay more attention to what's going on here and update more often!

LaPalida :: Thanks Lap :) Good to see you haunting the forums again! :)

daestwen :: Thanks Daestwen :) Just keep at it!

Hybrid_75 :: Heya - thanks. Actually, I think the mosaic went into the IDW ... I think. I don't remember now :S

wholecar, Nkristian, Mydrim, Salacuis and destinyapocalypse :: Thank you!

crazy3dman :: Hey man, thanks for the kind words! The whole Deep thing took on a life of it's own, but more on that later :geekg:

Jamesy :: Thanks :) I appreciate that.

Saturns Gate :: Thanks man. You in CHOW this week?

kelly x :: Kelly, thank you for your kind words

jedininjaman :: Thanks for your comments. I typically doing go as dark as I could out of personal preference, but I've been experimenting with going darker (see below) - also, I need to make sure to adjust my images once they are scanned because it seems that they lighten considerably once prepped for the web ... But thank you!

stoph :: Hey stoph! how's it down under? Thanks for the words, man :) Still pluggin!

Kerberos :: thanks for your thoughtful words. I must have redesigned Smaug at least six, seven times trying to get that look :) In retrospect I think I should have spent more time on the body as well, but I really wanted to capture that expression! :geekg:

Aly :: thank you! The pencil work is proving to be rather addicting, to be sure. RE: The bow/arrow incident - It looks better the way you did it, though! That's got to count for something! doesn't it?

Tim :: Thanks Tim - I'm really pleased you like the new stuff!

Um ... ART!
A couple of these are cross posted from either CHOW or My Finished Thread or both, so.

These three sketches are companion pieces to the Two Gents (Tin Man & Bughead above). The whole thing has sort of morphed into an Alice in Wonderland sort of story. (Chris Bennet was the one that initially planted the idea in my noodle, so I'm sort of running with it). So, those three sort of move in sequence (Tin Man & Bughead would go after the Kiwi Gardener).

A study I did of a statue of Joan of Arc - from photo. I would love to see the actual statue at Notre Dame, as I am in love with it.

Anyway, I blew the study as I ended up enlongating her face - the statue's face is far more "boxy." But aside from that caveat, I think it came out fair.

Pencil on paper.

The improvement over the last couple of years is awesome Shane. The one thing I'd like to see you work more on is presentation/graphic design skills. I think that a break through in that area will help your work immensely. We need to get you down to Seattle one of these days.

Thanks for the comments Mike.

Interesting thing is, I am a graphic designer by trade - that's my day job right now. I tend to avoid it when I'm doing my artwork, because I do it all day long.

You can see some of it slip out if you troll the Chow threads - I did all the header graphics and buttons there.

But, you're right. I should spend more time on that than just slapping the stuff on the page. Jason got on my ass about the the same thing.

Cheers,
~Shane
