pringle, omg man, your like my new favourite artist! I checked out your site, and you have amazing work!

ecsdesign

You also have very good work, very inspiring. VERY :) love this thread already. Hmm, i wouldnt mind seeing work in progress environments either, i donno if it would be ok to post them here or not? Or just there be another thread for that?

pringle
May 6th, 2005, 10:15 AM
Thanks guys,

Ecsdesign, both are great, my fave is the second one, love the txture and colours. Nice!

Here is a progress shot, I sketched some architectual details in my sketchbook before going for the computer.
Always get the big shapes down before going into details.

http://img242.echo.cx/img242/6424/decoprogress8aa.jpg

kidcrucial
May 6th, 2005, 10:46 AM
Pringle- Thanks so much for the progress shots. In between steps 1 and 2 you're physically painting all of the structural details (window "frames" and other extrusions) right? That must be insane! And it all looks so spot on. Simply amazing sir.

Awesome thread here... wish I had some time for crits.

pringle
May 6th, 2005, 11:05 AM
kidcrucial, All is painted. As far as the details go, I did a lot of vertical lines to start with. As I only have one vanishingpoint I could hold down the shift key to make sure my verticals were aligned.

kidcrucial
May 6th, 2005, 11:15 AM
Pringle- Yeah, that's what I did in the raining enviro pic above. As for the receding lines, do you use a lasso tool to make sure you maintain the perspective, or do you just have an insanely steady hand and a sharp eye? :)

Pringle woah, nice tut! Thanks mate! :)

Atmospheria

Awsome pic man, really crazy imagination you have there to make something like that. I wish i could go there :P

And now a question for you. How exactly did you do the perspective on that piece?

Atmospheria
May 6th, 2005, 01:36 PM
JustinBeckett - Well, it wasn't a big problem to setup a smooth perspective in this pic. Cause there are no architecture or vehicles etc. I gave the perspective with color instead. Tints of green helped me with this. Thats all...
hope it helps

kidcrucial
May 6th, 2005, 02:08 PM
Atmospheria- Very nice work! I love the mood of this piece. I checked out your website too (very nice work btw, and congrats on your Expose 3 inclusion) and bookmarked it quickly. Again, beautiful work.

Sweet stuffs!! <3
A quick question for you guys, with all those kickass environment designs, do you always lay down the perspective grid when drawing it? or you are just so used to it, you don't need to lay down the grid lines everytime when you sketch?

kidcrucial
May 9th, 2005, 01:45 PM
I don't know about the rest of the guys here, but I always lay down some sort of guidelines. I'm not good enough to do otherwise. :\

JustinBeckett
May 9th, 2005, 02:10 PM
for me, i usually do lay down perspective and composition lines. But i mainly do landscapes and such. So i dont always need them. But its good to put them down at first. It will help. For building's and all that fun stuff, i suggest definetely putting down perspective lines.

Jeff Nentrup
May 10th, 2005, 12:02 PM
Thanks Justin,
This was done in Painter 6 last year. I'm using painter 9 now. I was fortunate enought to study concept design and digial paint with Ryan Church,
so I've adopted alot of his working methods and brushes. Mostly water color, square chalk, 2b pencil (he actually uses the scratchboard tool) and glow brushes... I belive you can download his painter brushes from his web-site.
Cheers!

All really nice work Pring-
Nice color. Perhaps a little lonely? How about some people or a well placed mystery figure? As a scene the viewer needs a little payoff somewhere, probably needs some attention at or near the VP whether or not you put a first read elsewhere. ie: your first post in this thread would feel similar to this one without those figures... also helps establish scale.

Jeff Nentrup, thanks for replying. I'm doing a project where I'm describing different architecturel settings. I wanted to see If I could make them look interesting without doing extreme perspective or stuff like that.

I have a tendency to render everything at the same level. That is something I gotta work on. You are right about attention at the VP.

My goal is to makes these streetscenes look interesting in our world and still be plausible in terms of achitechture and scale etc.

Guess I just have to work harder :painting:

BTW: the plein air section on your site is amazing

kidcrucial - yeah took quite a while to just do the line work. thats also why i basically colored it with three values. otherwise it would have taken me months..

MeArOne - glad you like it..

LeejeN218 - love that first one.

Pringle - very impressive. love your atmosphere and compositions man. and the way you keep m a bit rough.

here are a couple from a quick design i did a couple of years ago when i was graduating in tokyo. its a city hanging upside down, over another city. the space between 'uptown' and 'downtown' was to be mad crowded and metropolic, with buildings amd neons hanging down.

on top of everything you would have a big empty space - sort of like a giant roofterrace / parc in the city. the drawings are abit basic, more to show design than convey mood...

try to upload some more recent work later.

if its too much ill remove some of them..
or i could upload some of the construction priciples i did... :)

Really great stuff guys! Love it all, a question to everyone, where do you all get the ideas for creating such highly detailed environments. Look through magazines, or what..just wondering.

Pringle nice work again :)

Stewart one, you have some very good work! :D

Jeff Nentrup, you just inspire me tooo much man! I wish i could learn from you. Do you have any tuts....

Thanks a lot Justin. There is a lot of inspiring stuff in this thread for me too. I'm trying to figure out how these guys get the Craig Mullens look myself...

I don't have any tutorials put together although that is something I'd like to add to my site down the road. I primarily use Painter 9 but always have Photoshop running for transforms, filters and the amazing file browser. As far as technique most of my method comes from oil painting from models, outdoors and some from photos.
Digitally I tend to design on the fly because it's so easy to make changes. I studied with Ryan Church for 14 weeks or so while at Art Center and picked up a lot of his habits, check out the DVD's on his site if you haven't already. He breaks it down really well.

I'll see if i can put up some work in diffrent stages soon. I'll let you know when that happens. Hopefully my clients will let me show some of my more recent work as well.

Cheers.

Jeff Nentrup: Your welcome man :) You have amazing work, and i hope someday i can make it to that level, and i am willing to try really hard, to get there. And alot of peoples works in this thread are great.

That would be really great if you posted tutorials/step by steps :)

Anyways, heres one i did tonight guys.

Just painted this from my head. Im not sure if i was aiming to get it exactly like, the aliens, from the movies... kinda thing. But something different.

Like this thread, I inspired me to do a city piece.

Thaks guys. LP

@Pigbelly

Cityscapes, yeah. Aren't they a b**ch. I would say that you have your values down pretty tight. As far as constructive crits go, I'd say that the horizon is too low. It should propably intersect the giant sphere a little bit higher up as I see it. The city lights could use some work aswell I think. I find them to be too monochromatic, and believe you could do well making some, or even many of them a cold colour to contrast your colours a bit. (ofcourse I do that too mutch but we all have our thing, right?!) But you know bluish vs. yellowish. A yellow, warm city full of cold, icy light would be nice ;)

Cool. I look forward to seeing your next big scape, and I hope you can use the critisism! :)

hey all,

This thread is so awesome. Everyone in here is kicking ass so I'll wipe my chin now. <3

I have never really done environments. especially any cityscapes. So call this a Craig Mullins/ Pringle Homage since they were the inspiration.

broken lizard > SW wasn't really an influnce. I had an idea for a city built on ringed structures. I think I'll explore the ide some more. The structures could be free standing or partialy burried in the ground, or on a larger scale a planetary surface. hhmmmm might be a few more here.

This topic rocks. Now, when I look at my own backgrounds, I cry. Then I wonder what the point is in even trying. Then I go sit in the corner in a ball and bang my forehead into my knees, cursing my inadequacies.

Then, dammit, I go back to my computer and try again. And get a little bit better.

Hey guys, this is my first post. If this is out of place, then I apologize. I'm a student in level design for games and I've recently become really interested in drawing and painting(just started 6 months ago). In particular, I'm really into environment art for games, especially creating 2D environment paintings like the ones posted on this thread. I was just wondering, if I wanted to focus heavily on environment art, what steps I should be taking to improve to a professional level.

I really don't want to hijack the thread, but I would very much appeciate talking to someone, possibly through email or messanger about the subject. These environments are really spectacular, can't wait to see more.

Thanks,
Will

http://img45.imageshack.us/img45/9789/ernabyloch8kj.jpg

What can I say about this one? It's not great or even good by any means, in fact it's the product of a tutorial and five hours of boredom. Alas, the dreaded lensflare rears it's ugly head in this one. But you gotta start somewhere right? I love spacescapes, so I'll be honing the skills at it for some time to come. First on the list is to figure out how to make a believable sun, lol.

Cheers!

Trust me I hear ye, lol. I'm learning how to paint all aspects of outer space...when I've got a few more down better, you'll see better finished results.

@BAKI: Yikes mate. Filters hurt your work, no doubt. If you had done this without using any filters, I would think it wold have turned out much better. Filters tend to make dynamics into uniformities, killing the variety and the cleanness of the picture. I shouldn't talk, what with that big huge lensflare above, lol, but the advice rings true for me as well.

Orbluvion:

Very nice work and control of the color. I just finished yesterday reading the original H.G. Wells War of the Worlds (takes place in and around London), but your interpretation is much as I imagined it (ok, with some help from the latest movie). I'd like to see someone's interpretation of the book's vision, in other words, an 1895 take on the subject. Wells describes them in some detail, and it would be interesting to see how y'all do to visualize it.

Do you have stages saved on this piece, I'd be interested in seeing it develop.

Thanks for the inspiration!

I think its good pencil stuff but Im really having trouble with the perspective. The house on the bottom of the paper appears to have an eye level as for the rest has a birds eye. Know I know the house on the bottom could be on a hill, but it still seems akward. CAnt wait to see a color comp.

Kewl stuff! the only problem I have is the barrel. I dont think it can stand like that on an incline. Oh..and I think it would be nice if the cart isnt completely aligned with the vanishing point, just to give some variety.

Wow, very nice paintings in this thread!^^

This was a birthdaypresent for my granny:)
I used aquarellcolours. It's not my best environment, but in a way I like it.
In addition I dind''t had much time, and I needed a Present for my Granny:P
