Oh my God. I'm going to get teary-eyed looking through this thread. This stuff is freaking beautiful.
Anyway, I don't do many environments but here's some junk I did. It's not "finished," really. I'm just sick of looking at it.

Gotta love this thread! Great enviroments, by everyone! :D
I recently found a buch of architecture stencils lying in my house somewhere (got to wash them, but that's another story :P) Hopefullt they will help me somehow. btw, there's one that's shaped like, uhh. Weird, it's bent (but flat) and then there's a big blob in the end, dunno what i should use that one for.
Well, as i said, Love your enviroments, gotta do some myself :).

I think you may be referring to a 'french curve'
I use them as guidelines when doing technical drawing.
They create a desired non-freehand line.

which brush did you use/how did you use it to get the texture on the ground? you've managed to get a nice charcoal-y texture as well.
I like the way you isolate the silhouetted character with the tonal contrast. It would be nice to see slightly more detail in the envirnment, and some colour would be nice too.

if you wouldnt mind going into some more detail later on I would love to read it. I am very new to digital painting, and texture is one thing I need to find out a whole lot more about. I don't think I am going to be able to do anymore with the generic brushes that come with potatoshop, so if you could tell me how you made a brush out of an old school picture frame (!) I would love to read more about it!
Any urls to good tutorials that you have used would be appreciateed too? ;)

August 27th, 2007, 12:11 PM
bones you do realise that you can make your own brushes in photoshop, if you have a look in the help file that comes with photoshop, it'll explain exactly how to make them. Basicly pretty much anything you need to know concerning the program itslef will be there. But if you do need more tutorials, then look for the photoshop tutorial thread here in CA
Scoobydoo_lt
August 27th, 2007, 02:29 PM
yeah Bones Grenogs is right, all of this is in there. basicly you just take a picture or whatever, and make a mask from it and you get the brush. or you can download the brushes from the internet. and after that you just play with brush settings like shape dynamics, scattering, other dinamic, and other. so basicly you get the result you want. i'm a starting concept artist also. so i just experiment for a while. besides that i draw with normal pencil for 7years, but its so different from a tablet.

Can you do all these things with a mouse, or do you need to use a graphics tablet?
grenogs
August 28th, 2007, 11:00 AM
it can all be done using a mouse, a tablet just makes it a lot easier, quicker and a lot more sensitive like a real pen would, if your thinking about doing a lot of digital art, then you should realy concider getting a tablet, you can buy a basic wacom, for less than 50 uk pounds. Or better still buy one from ebay for less than a tenner. and if you like, then you can always invest in something a lot better later on. If you have a choice between a cheap trust version or a wacom version, i would go for the wacom, its much better quality for your money.

Kait: I think you would be doing yourself a major service if you were to refine the shapes you've made. Youve got mood, pallette, and atmosphere established with these pics, but they are at a very early stage from what their potential is. There're many loose edges that could be tightened up as well as adding windows and all the other little things that make a city a city or a building a building. I really think another few hours more spent on these would be worth it :)

grenogs
October 14th, 2007, 01:30 AM
ok, it has depth, you understand distance and how colours change, which is a good start. Now for the crits :) your clouds are to reguler, it almost looks like you have copy and pasted the top clouds, go look at some good sky referance, that will help a lot, or even better go outside and take a few photos of the sky tohave a better understanding. your water is way to calm, even on the most carmest of day, there should be some sort of ripple or wave action going on. Also put in some realy strong highligts on the water surface, afterall water is very shiny. Also concider reflextions from the distant mountains and clouds. One last thing, at the moment you have no focal point and a lot of empty space. maybe put a boat on the water or a bouye, basicly anything to put some life into your image. Try something red or orange, it will atract your eye but it will also compliment all that blue you have at the moment. Its also good thing to do if your ever concidereing to have an image printed, that way the printer has a better idea how the original colours and tones are supose to look. hope that helps.

October 14th, 2007, 09:25 AM
Yeah, thanks a lot. I was actually looking for more stuff like palms and stuff to mix it up but I wanted to improve the basics a little first.
Also, these ripples. I'm having a bit of trouble. They end up looking like flat, randomly-placed blotches. Something that just comes with practice, perhaps?

Boooooring.
Enviroments need some "action" too.
Add something in the foreground, like a boat.
Or some rocks, just anything will do better than an empty space.
Try more textures on the mountains.

Not very good compared to everyone else's work, I know, but we've all got to start somewhere. Hopefully one day I'll be as good as some of the rest of you.
It's still a WIP, of course, so I need to do some more work on it (Like the hills, skyline, etc, and then some photoshop work atop the GIMP stuff.)

Sorry for the drop in quality but I don't know where else to post.
Here's an attempt at rendering an architectural object starting from a simple SketchUp model (obviously influenced by Whit Brachna's and Rainart's tutorials). I try to use what I'm learning about digital painting to improve the look of my architectural renderings, made with CAD programs with poor rendering capabilities.
I feel there is something deeply wrong in the final image but I can't focus the problems.

The concept to me, doesn't make a lot of sense. It's rendered out well but i can't tell if it's a spaceship, or a building or what. When i first saw it i thought it was a bookcase. If it were a spaceship it would make more sense because maybe it landed in that barren plain that it's sitting on. But as a building which i more strongly think it is, why would it be there? an office building in a barren wasteland? i hope i'm not being harsh, i really dont mean to be but i am having trouble figuring out what the concept is meant to be and why whatever is there, is there. Hope that helps.

June 3rd, 2008, 06:22 PM
ArtZealot thank you for your comment. Being an exercise it wasn't conceived to have some meaning in particular, but if you perceived it as a bookcase it means I must work a little more to give the sense of scale...
Farvus
June 3rd, 2008, 06:55 PM
Lol. ArtZealot. I assure you it's not hard to find much more spaceship-like building concepts. Life can be stranger than fiction. Check this out
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?p=3478064
As for the pic. To me the pic looks like it makes sense. Feels a bit like some research campus in the middle of the desert. Something like for example ESO hotel building (http://www.schoerghuber.de/mediadb/761/2282/bild_grossNEU.jpg) in Chile which is astronomic observatory.
I would work more on the clouds. They look too heavy.

Revenebo, I love the building, don't change it - I think it's just the sky behind it, it feels as if it's pushing itself over the top of the building, which is probably why you're not happy with it. Maybe it's just me, but I see a different colour/light source between the foreground and the background and it looks a little strange... but the building looks fine.
I have a couple, but they're not really finished.
I'm also not sure what to do with this space-scene... there's something off that I cannot rectify myself. :( Can someone help?

June 27th, 2008, 07:46 AM
wow, theres some nice stuff here.
ravenebo try softening your clouds, their a little too heavy, alsdo soften the edges of the mountain in the background to give it more depth. I think your main problem here though is it lacks a focal point, some kind of vehicle or creature in the foreground will help, or even try adding another colour into the image, at the moment its just blue and brown, a third colour will complement the other two giving your scene a little life. Other than that, its rendered nicely, but it needs that little something to finish it. Have a look at the starwars universe books, they can be quite helpfull with these kind of images.

Phew, great works in here. Just spent a good part of my day looking through every page . I want to get into digital painting, but I have to wait 6 months till I'm back in my home country with a real computer and better funds. Until then, does anyone have any good tutorials/dvd's that cover basic things like perspective, lighting, etc? I can copy anything with a pencil, but I have a hard time creating my own ideas. So while I wait till I can get on a good computer to start painting, I'd like to have a good grasp on the basics :)
Thanks for any help.
Oh the equipment i have at home is ermm
19" inch flat screen
7600 gt nvidia 512 mb graphics card
2.9ghz X2 (dual core i think) amd processor or something
some motherboard, no idea :)
i think that was what it was like, i haven't seen it in 6 months, so it's about 1 year old or so.
is this good enough to start decent digital art? or do i need to invest in a mac? I have also some basic wacom tablet too that i got for my bday a few years ago when I was 15 or something, the pen has a broken button on the side i had no idea what the button even did, just a little plastic thing fell out, i can still stick something in their and it will click. (anyone have an idea it what that button is for?) other then that it still works.

@bin , very nice texturing and atmosphere on your enviroment.! I can almost "hear" traditional Asian music, nice work. Keep practicing!
@Mindbendermind
Your fantasy landscape looks slick . Although i think you must do something with the color values and lights/darks. That yellow hits too much on the eye. Keep up!
@Slayer
If this is your first post here cant wait for the next one!!Your mountains look so real with their mass and light/shadows, not mentioning the wonderful color of the cloud above them which gives a nice feeling to the whole painting. What i dont like very much though is that your enviroment is kinda empty.I suggest try adding more elements on your next painting if you want.
.

Hmm, i have quite some time to post something new, i was practising with rendering and texturing. This just came out the furnace.

I'm sure you would find your paws just as dirty if you dug on the other side of the fence. Maybe you'd even find that bone you're looking for.

:carnifex: This is one of my great problem to put a picture to site asking to post your animation, environment and some post inside the box. But I could not do that.
How to that, I like all the picture posted on here. So iconic and amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
