I can't see any images, thumbnails, etc. people have posted. Maybe it's a setting on my computer?

I can try posting, though I'm not sure if this link will work-

Sparth: there is a good reason that you carry a trophy of a enviro-master.

I silently followed your progression while great envy-growths darkened my admiring of your skills. I saw your tutorials on the web and also got a copy of the recent book (my work is on the page 59) but still can't find the way you master your magic brushes. I'm far away from all the MB workshops, so this is the only place for me to learn.
Any chance of sharing these secrets with me and the others?

P.S.- I assume, you just lost your dog, right? Sorry about that...

Anyway, big respect and best regards,

gorgeoue as always, sparth :) I really love the simple stylisation and design mixed with the wicked textures. Just whats needed and nothing extraneous. Its this 'shorthand' for what we see around us thats the most fun to paint and to view. Also the hardest I think. Very inspiring stuff. :)

Wow pringle, it's amazing what a little fog/haze and some birds can add to the piece.

The structures are fun to interpret, and the ground is wonderfully rocky, but the surface the man is standing on is a little vague (and his legs seem a little off). Attending to the upper-left sky and killing those brush textures would probably help suspend the imagination of the viewer a little more as well.

sparth
October 9th, 2006, 09:15 PM
pringle fabulous piece!
and yes, you should add more light to the foreground i guess, in order to also emphasize the subject. but man it's great.

Thanks for the critique guys, I appreciate it. You are right about emphazising the ground and subject. And yeah, the legs are all crooked. I'll look into it!

Excellent thread. Very, very inspiring.
Ecsdesign, I like your strokes and your digital paint quality a lot, makes me want to look twice to see if it is actual paint. Tangible atmospheres are nice to stare at.
Here are a few tries of mine. The first three belong to my thesis project. The last one started as a random excercise/challenge to paint lava, and ended as, um... a comment on global warming, maybe?
Again, great thread!

Hi folks,

The quality level of this thread is encreasing in a scary way:)

Here are some of the samples of a recent workshop that i gave for a film school (Matte Painting fundamentals):

http://www.streamatica.ch/sketchbook/matte_excercise_02.jpg

http://www.streamatica.ch/sketchbook/matte_excercise_01.jpg

http://www.streamatica.ch/sketchbook/matte_excercise_03.jpg

It was about understanding and respecting the given footage and extending shots based on the realistic photography.

And unfortunately, i didn't want to use any custom brushes. Basically two layers: original shot and the paintover, that's it.

Keep inspiring me guys.

Best,

Best regards,

Khan

Sparth: Incredible, unique shapes and compositions as usual. I really dig the change up in...shape language. Its beautiful how a couple of interesting shapes, used properly can define a whole design style.

Pringle: I squinted with the anticipation of rain hitting my eyes on that first piece. AWESOME. I don't know what it is, but I always hear a sound track in my head when I see your pieces. Something dark and ambient.

I've been really pushing to improve my environment skills lately...heres the latest attempt. I realize the perspective on the castle is a bit wonkey, I'll probably return to this piece fix that perspective and tighten up the castle a wee bit.

Thanks Sparth. Your stuff is very dynamic! You must have a nice and fast work flow. I don't really have a good routine for this digital painting thing, since I have only done it 6 months or so. I guess I just have to start doing speedpaintings.

Sure, chaos, be my guest. It would be cool!

the image is a complete mystery to me, thats why i like it so much, i have no idea what they are celebrating or even if it was a celebration.

i found another image of the event, soo beautiful with the colour and the vibrancy. i'm sure you'l agree.

makes me want to paint it.

Sparth, Alti (love the 2nd!), Photeck ("Concept-on-Mac", right? :) ), junthi: all great!!

Sparth: It's cool to see how you're drifting towards abstact art! After all, abstractivism really is a very high form of art, huh...? fo_O
But then, abstract art without mastering realism first is mere garbage.

it's a production of "Royal de Luxe" street theater called the little giantess and the sultan's elephant
They visited some big cities of europe; Antwerp was one of them, so i went to watch the show and it was a-mazing

WOW...I checked out this thread for the 1st time tonight and holy crap there are sweet environments pouring out of here....I got super inspired and did this...real quick sketch (I'm not very confident with environments...note to self *come here more often and practice something other than characters). Special praise to:

Pringle-Godamn, its like your not even human, just a lean mean environment machine....really REALLY inspiring stuff

Soulage-Your colours are so intense

but big shout out to the countless others who are pretty freaking awsome throughout the tread
