Hi, Welcome to my sketchbook. . .Keep going, it gets better!

These are left handed sketches (I'm right handed) I did these at work today.

I've been working on a bunch of croustacian(sp) type characters, hopefully have the complete group up by the end of week. . .here's a couple from the other day.

Looks nice man!
Lol, lefhanded drawings? Pretty good job then ;)
I like the line work a lot on the lefthanded stuff! Would be cool to see more of those - and it fits the characters really well.
I dig the baby :rendered:

Whoa! Lefthanded studies? I've tried..... they came out looking like a steaming pile of shit. Kudos to you for making 'em not look like it :D
The lobsterdude needs to have his shoulder pushed a bit back. It looks like theres a twist in his torso that isn't followed through to the rest of it.
Good lookin' out tho! Waiting for an update!

I've mentioned before that illustration has made me lazy and sloppy. . .so i'm trying to get back to my "roots" and going for more of a traditional look.
Here's more of my crustacean/underwater humanoid sketches

I'm diggin' on your rendering. I especially like the fat dude at the lower right.
The girl is a bit skewed, though. Is the mouth on the shouting guy supposed to be that pushed that far to the side? Maybe it'll be clearer when you get it done.

dCepT - nope I totally screwd up the screaming guys face. Originally he had his mouth closed, and because most of my sketches are done at work I wasn't really paying attention between the times I sketched and the times I had to work . . .so that's what happens. I work the summer as a caricature artist, and when some one wants one done, I have to switch major gears. . .

Hope you don't mind me asking, what's a caricature artist?

Caricature artist draws exagerated cartoons of people, usually with a big head and small body.

The new screaming guy seems a bit skewed as well...

I hope this doesn't sound like an off-handed compliment, but the stuff here looks much better than many of the pieces you post on your own design thread. Lovin' the rendering.

Thanks everyone for the comments and support, it really helps to keep ya motivated.
dogfood- I'm actually getting back to an older style, my professional work has continued to push me towards speed (working fast, not the drug :nohope: )
and it really caused me to become sloppy and worst, so I'm slowly making my way back. . .so expect kick ass stuff on the necromancer pic.

Nice update man! I replied in your activity thread about the necromancer. Really diggin on the expression in his face! Be careful not to lose that when you paint him.
The zombie-hulk-dude has some anatomyissues.. Especially the hips and the legs, but it's a cool concept!

I'm really liking the necromancer (though I'm not sure if he's not a bit short in the legs) and the graveyard, but the zombies don't really appear to be in the same plane. They look to be from references where the eye level is different from that of the piece and some are different from each other. It gives them more of a montage feel. I do like their character, though.
look
May 20th, 2005, 08:50 AM
I like the necromancer's attitude, hold his chin high and glance down at the zombie and viewer. It's really nice. I think his legs are a tad short. That big zombie guy is really nice done! I like the yellow stain around the stitches. Although his right foot is a bit tilted and make him look a bit unstable. Other than that, it looks great.

dCepT- Thanks man, right right about the frankenstein redesign, and I realized it way too late. . .not paying attention, watching a movie.
dogfood- I agree with you on the leg issue, and hopefully will be getting it under control before it's finished. After looking at the zombies I have to agree, but only in the "clean" version, I think they work well in the sketch. . .maybe I can bring them back together as I render.
look- Thanks, and you are also right, I've had concerns about being able to keep the "character" of the necromancer into the digital rendering, we'll see what happens.
Thanks guys for taking the time, it's always a pleasure:

Your creatures look great, I applaud your imagination. The proportioning of the faces looks good, but it seems like there's something off with how some of the heads rest on the shoulders/neck-- could be just because they're zombies or something.

Also for the Sketch trade, original design by Fellah
look- sorry for the lack of sketch posts, I really like the hog dragon myself, my fav. out of the group. . .and when I get the time I'll be doing more.
razuel- thanks, and you're right about the zombies, I lost a lot of life (no pun intended) when I cleaned up the images.
Aremah- I really missed doing the shading work, and it isn't as time consuming as it looks, maybe 20 min. a picture. My technique is a little rough, I mainly block in shadows and work gradients to white.
Cobi- lol, thanks - can't imagine doing anything to make the world a happier place, but here's to wishing.

Some very nifty stuff here, Rick. Minor anatomy/perspective issues are visible even to my eyes in some of the pics, but your imagination and your plain (but detailed) style are really something. The necromancer's looking great. Keep working on it (and the other version if you can)! :)

Well, I decided to delve into the archives of old work, but most of the stuff is in storage, so here is what I have. This is mainly illustrative work I did (age listed for each) as most of my studies are in sketchbooks put away. Don't Laugh :teeth:
I was around 13-14 when I did this, heavy comicbook influence
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/grendalmage/kid.jpg
Around 16 here, just learned the joys of ink and using a quil and brush
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/grendalmage/fergetchild.jpg
Around the same age here, showed this to my grandfather (I lived with them shortly as my grandmother was sick and they needed taken care of) and being the christian man he is said "how dare I draw one of god's devine creatures" we never really got along after that.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/grendalmage/angel.jpg
I think I was 17 for this, first page to a short comic for Graffiti, our school art mag. I was editor for this also, and got my first real taste for work like this.
I really just liked the title, first venture into graphic arts, and I did this freehand.

I am especially taken with your Abraham Lincoln monkey (top-right if you don't see the resemblance) in your first post.
rick_hershey
June 20th, 2005, 03:47 PM
look- the horse pic and the dog thing were real short deadlines, entirely they set was like 5-6 pics in 4 days. It just happened I was going to a family reunion that weekend up in the mountains of PA. Design after design trying to get the right look, eventually I realized a simpler apprach was better. The grey tones were not present in the published version.
razuel- the dog was fun, it was from an activity over at rpg.net, they run "bootcamps" every once in awhile that helps prep illustrators, after reading the description I just thought it would be fun.
Badger- thanks, I rarely look at old work, but when I do it takes weeks to clean my studio back up. . .for awhile I was oppsessed with textures, then went through a simplicity stage, I like to think I'm more balanced in my current work.
dCepT- hey, the prizma color stuff is fun, I really like it and will be trying it out on more stuff, i'm also interested in experimenting with the prizma greys and digital color over it.
figure2- that damn monkey does look like lincoln. . .wtf was I thinking about?

That dog is lovely. I especially like the back facing one. I think, on the forwards facing one, the paws should face more twoards the screen, and the legs should be a bit longer, or less beefy. ALso, the jaw on the right (his left) looks like it comes a little too far out on the corner. other than that, very nice! I love his head on both shots though.

Well Carnifex made me draw boobs, and I never show process here, this will be a first. First an explanation.
you'll notice the quality of these scans are poor, and some are upside down. This is because my "real" computer is being worked on, and I'm stuck with a very . . .hmmm, slow computer right now. It took 3 hours to scan these, that's how much I care. I suggest for the upside down ones to either stand on your head or turn your monitor over ;)
The first pic is a couple of thumbs I did, about 20 all together. . .several from past studies.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/grendalmage/thumbs.jpg
I worked up a couple of them, but this is the one i finally chose, you can see all my anatomy flaws and everything!!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/grendalmage/sketchy1.jpg
I used a light table to get a cleaner copy of my sketch and work out the anatomy some more. . .still not sure about the arm, but then I realized the whole picture was about boobs (this is one of 4 cleaner sketches)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/grendalmage/sketchy2.jpg
Here we have a very clean version of my lines (light table again) I use blocking and labels to work on placing shadows. . .I did about 5 of these and rendered them before I got it right, this is what I used for the final, but it's still off as light goes.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v14/grendalmage/shadey1.jpg
This is the final, cleaned version of lines from previous sketch + highlight guide from before and a slow rendering process. This is the second of the images (first was really bad) looking at it I think the breasts are off and don't sit right, I also don't like the stomach rendering or the neck. . .but that's it.

Hey, Rick! Haven't been snooping around in here for a while.
Good clean style on the latest batch.
Saw a couple of things, though; The chin on the business-dude is a bit off... more precisely, his jawline. Also I think a little darker value on the crotch-area would help. It kinda pops out now... not sure if you wanted that...ahem... ;)
See ya in the illustration activity!
