Not for the faint of heart...
I have been wanting to do one of these for awhile now and since i'm starting to tackle gouache it seemed like a good time to do it. I've used gouache sparingly in the past but never as the principal medium...so here goes to learning to paint anything and everything :^^;:

ok, so i got a little overexuberant about this and went out and bought a sweet little watercolour sketchbook today to keep a physical version of this online sketchbook :D
a little sketch of my fav toy...the 30GB MP3 player :) who needs friends when you've got 9 days of music and a bag of combos? :nohope:
so i'm happy w/ the texture of the piece, but i wish i woulda used a slightly lighter orange/yellow for my highlights. happy w/ the form though.

Hey all, long time no update...not that too many people are watching this sketchbook in eager anticipation of my newest doodles and belabored studies. been drawing for a proj like 5 hours today and i'm burnt out- so i did some feet sketches to relax while watching Seinfeld...nothing better. :}
just 10% prismacolor marker (warm grey) and graphite on top.

as for where i went to school, Indiana Wesleyan University. absolutely an amazing art dept...and getting stronger. it's a small private school...but quality over quantity in this case. after i complete my master's work i'm really hoping to teach there...but we'll see what happens...

you have a wonderful collection here, playful and skilled drawings that utilize an expert economy. great stuff.
however, I'm not quite sure what to critique, where do you want to take your drawings? do you need help in making them 'finished pieces' or do you want to explore different styles? i guess i just need more direction on what kind of critiques you want because it looks like your technique and your style is pretty solid.
ApolloNuevo
June 20th, 2005, 07:58 PM
soaps> i work straight into markers at 10%, then whittle the form down a bit w/ a slightly darker shade, rough in the form then either ink the edges w/ 50% or graphite sometimes if i want really 'loose' lines...moving away from graphite though...served me well in the past but markers are much more painterly
greg> wow, thanks for the compliment. i don't know what i'm looking for either...except to become more skilled and to pull in more freelance gigs :bashful: so i just draw and draw, and anything people see that i need help w/ i'm more than willing to listen to...most of all i prob need to work on environments (ugh, and vehicles...i SUCK at vehicles_...but i'm doing a bunch of architectural renderings right now and i'm sick of perspective...maybe in the future i'll post some enviros.

This is some nice work in here your anatomy is solid.
The only thing that I saw that needs work is the way the bottom of the chin is drawn in the gesture/anatomy studies they read very awkward. The heads are maybe a bit to flat and long you may need to use less lines and round it off more. Maybe draw the whole head as it lies behind the arm.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v320/danielswartz21/daily%20sketchbook/june18.jpg
The Cartoon style is solid and you have made it your own. I would like to see you try at animating these especially the animals. It may be a good test on how consistent you are with the motion and anatomy.
What I like and I don't see enough of is the realistic illustrations. There is a nice relaxed feel to them.

Continuing on my vehicles obsession i did this study of a hummer. the challenge i set for myself was to have my reference from one angle, but draw it from another. a fun excercise we did when i was in my undergrad that really helps the understanding of forms in 3D space.
anyhoo...here it is...prismacolor markers, prismacolor pencils, gouache, and acrylics.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v320/danielswartz21/daily%20sketchbook/sept20.jpg
an interesting note. i used 2 different kinds of black in this. 1 was gouache and the other was a black marker. when i went to photograph this piece they turned out drastically different. the gouache came out flat and the marker had a sheen to it that made it a dark grey. there you go, you learned something today...apparently ink has specular properties.

Also - start playing with Photoshop more. Beyond being the 'way' of the future, its a real time saver and there's nothing to clean up. ;) Best of luck...

but then i realized why...i had lost the emotion to my art...there were no more 'happy accidents.' the emotion was slipping from my illustrations. i had too deep of control of the 'paintings'...hence why i am swinging back into natural media. in my illustrations now i use both. but i'm trying not to rely upon photoshop as a crutch...which is what i was doing when i was younger. i really want to learn the skills in the traditional realm...because when it comes down to it...i miss the tactileness of real media. i like getting my hands dirty, smudging paint, playing w/ different mediums and mixing techniques. it's more challenging to me. so yeah, i can do things much faster and cleaner in PS...but for the time being i'm trying to not over-indulge in the digital realm. it has a time and place that i use extensively for my illustration work and each artist has to discover their own way of doing things...hopefully i'll never stop exploring.
thanks for the great remarks everyone! i'll keep them coming as time allows :bashful:

Apollo love your stuff as always. I know that dreamworks has to have a spot for you. Anyways enough Asskissing from me.
The last two are fast clear and have nice lighting. The head looks like a take on the Easter Island head statues, don't know why, it just dose. With the pirate there seems to be a lack of planning with all of the space to the right but you ran out of room for the cutlas.
nice work man.

Really diggin the block cartoon style. You have made great use of basic shapes and lines to push form. Very creative expressions as well.
To crit I would say to keep up the studies on shading and color. You images have great life, which is the essential foundation (something i am working on). Add some composition, shading to create mood and direct focus and your stuff could be amazing.

Apollo your versatility is inspiring. I like how you don't conform to the cartoon specialty. I mean your good at it and apparently enjoy it but your life drawings are solid. The five minute one is my favorite. you have captured the mood and managed to get in some solid lines and values in there. I would like to see how you managed with a Carpenter's Pencil (I think they are called design pencils but I'm not sure) you know the ones with the flat rectangular lead. It may help you get in more values into those 5 min sketches on par with the 20 min ones.
On the VeggieTales. I like how you've handled Larry and the yellow one (forget his name Mr. Lunt?) but bob the tomato is looking awful flat and blurry. Maybe some highlights would help it.
PS: I have Kids and they love those vegetables. My favorite one has been Larryboy Vs. the Rumor Weed.

hey there,
alot of these pic give me the feeling your not really giving hem all you got..
step back and revieuw your pics and be honest and thorough.. look at the parts youlike and don't and do something with them.
also look deeper into the wealth of lineweight, make that what is important and good looking pop out. if your not to good at drawing a particular part.. then do it.. alwaystry. but do it gentel and try not to grip the viewers attention..
always look through their eye's.. they are your magic
in your recent painting.. the 'island' im missing the connection.. the rocks look cut and pasted onto the background.. not part of them
one thing doing that are the highlight on the left that are right on the edge of the rock and water.. and also there is no reflected light vsible on the bottems of them..
also on the rock itsself you going overkill with the highlights.. its making it look really chaotic and not helping the shape at all.. more killing it.
i hope this helps you a bit in your quest to other worlds.... feel free and true. good luck.
thnx,
cheers,

yeah i agree with the last comment. of course there's not as much to crit on you as you critted on me, but hey i should repay the favor with coming here and saying this anyhow. you gotta be careful with the white. learning the key places to put white to help out the situation is a tough gig.
http://www.bobtyrrell.com/gallery_portraits.htm that guy is master at this. i know it's a tattoo artist (so am i) but it could help checking out his stuff to get a better idea of what i'm saying.
also, i reeeaaaallly agree with the line weight thing, some of these things you have posted could look so much more finished.

The freeze frame studies look great, too. You really captured the characters.

i like your loomis (or is that hogarth, or is that just you). for the life studies, do some more planning, roughing in. you can see where you're compressing the figure based on the size of your paper. you may want to abandon some of your 'get it done' techniques when approaching a study. just focus more attention on the model.
in general, see about doing more complex compostions , as opposed to single objects. good stuff.

I'm really happy with the one you're really happy with, too. Those curves are really awesome...I've never seen anything quite like that one.
Thanks for stopping by my book.

Oh man, amazing to see changes over the 3 pages of your SB.
I love the stylized cartoonish-with-a-twist works but i am also loving the nlatest life-drawings and my personal taste goes with them. The one you are really happy with is my favourite too. You have great talent for life drawings, keep them coming.

Hey real nice work here and very varied! All your anatomical studies look great and are very loose which is cool!
Your style is quiet distinct from what i've seen but I do think when you draw vehicles they look maybe a bit too cutesy and small in scale(dont know why?) Interesting choice of colours which makews me think about how i go about colouring(thanks) One of my favs is the kid jumping into the water, theres a nice energy to that!

cool sp, the proportions look pretty on. ;)
the chin might be positioned a tad too far to the left of the image, but other than that, anatomy looks good. i'd like to see the lighting scheme taken a bit further, so keep workin!

Life drawing stuff looks good!
What kind of paper and brush pen did you use?
ApolloNuevo
November 19th, 2005, 09:55 PM
SirGreenSock,
The paper is from Borden & Riley. (#840 kraft pad)
The pen is a Faber Castell Black Brush-Pen http://www.faber-castell.com
i really like the brush-pen, i just wish someone made a fatter one.
thx for stopping by!

Cool, thanks. I use the Faber Castell brushpen, too. I also like using a fountain brushpen from Pentel (its called something like Pentel Color Brush), its basically a synthetic fibre brush with an ink catridge, it can make much fatter lines than faber castell.

woo hoo! another sketch in OC. this is really new for me...i usually draw out my undersketch traditionally and then scan and paint...but OC is so darn responsive and easy for me to grasp!! these last 2 i've done entirely in the computer...sure, old hat for some of you...but i'm happy w/ the experience. still not effortless, lots and lots of Ctrl+Z...but here it is:

Really digging the OC stuff!
Older versions of OC are free, but have less features (plus i think newer versions dont have network sketching!)
The one I use is OC 1.1, which is free, if you want me to send you the zip of it (its pretty small >1meg), just mail or PM me or something.

Hail there!
You've got a very nice style, very comic-like. The use of colors is very nice and the aspects in most of your work bring a good smile on my face. The vegetables were cool ;) . I don't do comic-style myself so it's sort of hard to give any potential critique to you. But what I would like to see would be more complete works with deeper shading and more subtle lines. That is more likely a request than a critique but...there you have it :) .
Keep on drawing and posting, this is a very positive thread you got here.

Dude you're kicking butt. The one comment I have about the OC stuff is that it looks blurry. I would try and get crisper with it and increase the darkness and tonal range on them. Nice work by the way. wish they had OC for Mac, but not yet.

I see you have Dynamic Anatomy by Hogarth. I love his stuff, but someone reffered me to Loomis. Check out some of his books here (http://www.saveloomis.org/index.html).
Your stuff is awesome and I love the characters you have as well. Those Veggie Tales pics you did were sweet. And as for the Spidey you did... I'd like to see him deplicted in a real comic book someday that way.
Which medium do you enjoy the best to use? Digital or traditional? I myself am enjoying digital medium nowdays because of the ease and fluidness of it. But I know I must get used to traditional methods as well.
Keep up the good work and I'll be back when you update!!!

Very nice stuff. Last one's very interesting. And those two before are hilarious.
I'm not sure how much it will pay off doing too much cartoonish stuff though.

Keep it up. This is definatelly a fun and interesing thread to browse through.

very cartoonie stuff. Rather satyrical in its taste, it seems, but with intent on being exagerated in the anatomy and the mood desplayed. Your lifestudies i like very much, and i think that you simply have alot to grow on, and probably will continue growing like all the rest of us. A good sketchbook, full of color and promise. jtheanswer, recurseive, ParkerD: thanks a lot and thanks for stopping by! i don't get in as much as i would like to but that's life. hopefully i'll have more time to post more!
Patch: thanks man, you're right...good anatomy studying is what i credit so so much of my growth to. it teaches so much about form, rendering, weight...it's really the most important aspect of studying art as far as i'm concerned
mull77:hand studies are from hogarth
bengonzalez:yeah, OC is way blurry and i really haven't taken the time to play with it. now after a couple months i'm back into markers which really are that smooth tactile effortless feeling that i need when sketching...OC was just a nice distraction but ultimately seperated me too far from my art.
blacky: i've been doing this for awhile but if you don't mind, please don't discourage other artists by telling them 'i don't know how much BLANK will pay off'...no good. encourage them in their aspirations and dreams...who knows how far talent and hard work can take them!
spicy: good to see you stopping by my man. you need to post more in your book too!
