Hi I'm new here. First off, just a bit of background. I started drawing in dec 2003. Before that, I used to doodle a bit here and there but it was nothing very serious. I did art in school for a year (2004-2005) and I've been drawing somewhat regularly.

Here's some of my work in chronological order, just so you have an idea of my standard and the kind of progress (if any) I am making.

2004:

Done this year:

Here's some stuff that I coloured in Photoshop 7 with my mouse:

(the hair was done with a tablet)

I scanned this sketch and coloured it with my new Wacom Intous 3:

I think I have a real problem drawing faces. I enjoy drawing, but I really hate seeing an ugly image, so any help will be much appreciated.

A sketch page from today. Just trying to keep it daily:

More face studies. Trying to keep it daily, even if it's just a page.

http://a.lux-solis.net/art/sketch5may05.jpg

And a self-portrait WIP:
http://a.lux-solis.net/art/selfp1_wip1.jpg

Done entirely in photoshop 7. Uh, I think i'm still getting used to using a tablet, this took forever to do and yet it still seems like I'm getting nowhere with it.

If anyone has any tips they are much appreciated.

Hey man, looking really good. I can see you are busy studing the human head. You got any books about the human head? I think that would help if you got one. I got one little crit that's important right away. Try to think of that the eyes are kinda in the middle of the head. Half face, half forehead. it seem that some of the figures got a little small foreheads, etc..

Doing really nice! Keep it going!

Thank you guys so much for the encouragement!! :D

Tigermilk - Yeah, I'm trying to start with the head, and when I'm done then I'll move to the rest of the figure :) I have NO anatomy books at all, so I'm going to look up some Loomis online. I will probably buy one during the weekend. Thanks for your crit, I will certainly keep it in mind.

Wakazou - Thank you! I haven't had any formal drawing training in proportions or anything whatsoever, however I will be going to university to study Design in July. I'm trying to pick up as much as I can by myself now. And yes, I will pay more attention to the placement of the eyes.

Today I tried to do a self-portrait.

Photo ref:
http://a.lux-solis.net/face.jpg

I did some small studies of it first, they all looked more or less like this:
http://a.lux-solis.net/art/selfp2_outline.jpg

Even did a trace to see how the line drawing should look like:

It turned out like this:

:dead:

Not too pleased with it, so going to do more very basic head sketches before I decide to do another portrait.

Good portrait! The rendering was nice! Watch out with the forms tho. The chin seems abit round, and the nose. But seriously, awsome portait!
You can see who it is, keep working on it!

Tigermilk - Thanks! I guess the rendering is ok, but I still gotta work on the form. All my faces come out too thin and elongated o_O

Anyway, on to more of today's (technically yesterday's) work:

Charcoal and Photoshop 7.

I've been sick for the last 6 days or so, so I haven't been drawing very much.

A quick sketch and quick PS colour. Drawn from a photo I took.

Some nonsense from imagination and a skull from ref.

More from BRAIN

Done completely in PS and from life, today.

I'm still trying to get used to my Wacom board, I think it's going to take quite a while. Also, I have been looking at Loomis stuff online, and drawing many circles, but I'm not going to post those as they are redundant. I need to draw a LOT more.

Quick sketches of a friend from life + quick ps colour. More to come later today. I've been extremely busy during the weekend so I haven't had time to draw... Excuses, excuses blah blah ...

A friend of mine who's taught drawing recommended that I do studies of basic shapes and still lifes, so I guess that's what I'll be doing from now on.

Onion: Pencil and PS

Shell and glass pebble: Conte

Hi,
Those picts are promissing ! Keep studying anatomy in a rigorous way, it will help you a lot when you will have to draw faces and bodies.
If you want to paint digitaly, change your mouse for a tablet, otherwise you'll never progress...
I would add that your volumes need to be more defined : everything is grey or mid tone : push the contrast, define clearly (even it's a bit artificial at the beginning) clear areas from dark areas. Actually black and white "colors" are enough to see if your drawing is correct ; subtile shading comes only after.
Good luck and keep posting.

Arctis ; Thank you for your comments :), I will try to do my best, especially when it comes to the shading and anatomy. I am currently using a Wacom Intuous 3 A5 tablet, only the first 3 digital works on this page have been done with a mouse. I'm still getting used to using it, so I currently use it more for colouring stuff that I scan.

I really need to update this more often, but I've been in quite a rut lately. Now I am slowly emerging from it.

Shell dwellings for creatures to live in. From last week:
http://a.lux-solis.net/art/shelldwelling.jpg http://a.lux-solis.net/art/shelldwellg2.jpg

25 May. Some eyes from a magazine:
http://a.lux-solis.net/art/25mayeyes.jpg

26 May. Headphones that look like UFOs from an angle:
http://a.lux-solis.net/art/26mayhphones.jpg

I tried to push the contrast on the last two like you said, Arctis :bashful:
