Despite being constantly under fire by enviormentalists, and being a prime target for sabotage and terrorism threats, the Atreides spice refinery is still one of the single most important buildings in the known universe.

painter, pretty quick job

I say we let William sleep, when would you like to post new subjects? Just let us know, Will

refinery noun a factory where crude substances are refined

Hmm:confident .

(trying a new technique)

PS: We also could have DSG topic posting shifts, so that we all get some sleep sometime. But I don't mind that they sometimes are a bit late, maybe making it a Bit Longer Than a Day Daily Sketch Group.
PPS: Just noticed that Hamsta's avatar is not a girl that's kissing a hamster, but licking one. Eugh, hairy.

hamsta- very desolate atmosphere. could be cool to build on with more time...

unleashed- i like it. kind of cartoony with one long hose like that and the ground kind of looks grassy.

Mad- interesting rendering of the machine. could use a little more accurate line quality. and the creatures look cute. although they could use something to define them and bring them out as well.

Machzero- really cool environment. although I think it needs more illusion of distance. maybe making the buildings in the back get lighter and less defined. or maybe even going into a fog. just some ideas...

Yeah I notice, the picure needs refining :P. I'll get to that right now.

But for now, here's another take at the subject.

Thanks Santa. I was kinda going for the grassy look...evil space grass...but some kind of evil space rock would probably fit the ambiance better. Why is mine mine so freakin' huge? I gotta figure this posting thing out.

phew, got tired with it. There is too much you could do with this one...
I will def. flesh it out lateron though.
Only took 1.5 hours so far...
PS 7, no ref.

Kind of a huge space refinery dunno....

Machzero nice one! I like the character!
NKunleashed the idea and setting is good, you need to tighten the shapes and put in more detail. Be more serious with any perspective issue also!

This is my second DSG.

I'm very new to illustration, so I'm not really stepping out on too many limbs yet. However, I'm having fun with this, and I'm obviously surrounded by much talent on these boards, so hopefully I'll learn over time with practice.

machzero - Very nice, clean rendering. I really like this one.
sleepychic - Hey you were thinking the same thing as me. :-)
Hideyoshi - I really like the futuristic look of your picture. Very nice.

I really wanted to get a lot farther with this and try to better indicate what is what but today just didn't yield the time to do so. But, a decent direction to go in I think. By the way though, thanks for the great topic Hand, liked it a lot.

thx Santa!
Nightfend: cool one! Like the perspective and the overall feel!
Lunarsis: really great color choice! Reminds me of some Ryan Church stuff...
Will: Yeah, man, that's one supercool environment painting! But again, why is it so blurred?

@ Mister_Cloak: Love the purple water and the pink clouds! I like how you did a entirely different thing than the rest :)

Awww, thank you! It doesn't "really" fit the theme though but I thought it came out decent. I just got commissioned this morning to paint it in oils. I am excited, although, I only worked in oils a couple times, and that was several years ago. *crosses fingers* let us hope I don't mess it up!

Hey Hide, you don't even know how happy I am that you mentioned Church in the same sentence as a sketch of mine. That's awesome beyond belief.

machzero - Nice! Methinks I gotta throw in some more tech/vehicle oriented topics for you. ;D (Love your submission to that "ThinkTank" thread, by the way. Really sweet work!)
Hamsta - Quick, but decent! Thanks for the concern about the sleep thing... I'm usually up pretty late, so it's not such a problem. If I'm aware of an earlier retirement, I'll try to post early.. thas all! :)
Mad Giraffe - Love those creatures! Nice Mechanism, too... Maybe this would've benefited from some back-lighting to better carve out the forms and also give some depth. Well done, though.
NKunleashed - Yikes, that's big. Great atmosphere/background.
sleepychic - Good gritty nasty filthy stinky poisoned look! Nice pallette choice.
Hideyoshi - Nice. But, I too am confused by whether that's just dropping back into brighter areas, or if it's a nearby energy source... Not as nice as your Sewer City, but good nonetheless. ;D This would've benefited from colour. Picture that in shades of blue... OOOh!
Mister_Cloak - I dig it. Fits perfectly with the topic, as far as I'm concerned. Cool contrast of the green vapour against the pinkish clouds. It's good that you're pushing yourself to include a variety of textures/materials.
nightfend - Great job! Looks like the beginning of some creepy platform game... Just what the hell busted out of there??! Good use of colour to augment the sense of depth. My fave today.
Lunarsis - Beauty. Is that a giant cockroach being processed? Cool lighting, brush strokes, light effects, and colour... The composition feels lopsided, but no big deal. Nice job - glad you're posting!
Hideyoshi - Thanks! Why so blurred? ... Hmm... Well, I guess I'm not really sure. I guess I work sorta blurry, somehow. I'll be making an effort to try and crispen things up somehow, but I haven't solved this puzzle yet. Other people have made similar comments before, so you've got company. We will see...
JustinBeckett - You join by mailing a SASE containing fiddy dollars of cold crisp cash to yours-truly, and take the 4 hour composition-based test that I'll send you. If you rank within the top 95 percentile, then I'll send you a kit that details how to apply for acceptance in the DSG. ...
Just kidding. You "join" by participating. I just posted the newest topic (TESTING THE AX-16, or something like that), so you can start drawing and post your pic at will!

William b. Hand - thanks for the vote of confidence... seriously! Now I don't feel so depressed over my thinktank entry... heheh. Felt it was totally ignored although I made sure it had all the main elements of "conceptart". However, dunno the real definition of what "industrial design" is though.

Still got a pile of work in progresses, and some other rough designs for the thinktank lying in my HD though.

SantaClaus/nightfend/Hideyoshi - thanks for the comments~!

Thanks hand, and I must say, coming here everyday has really improved my outlook on how I do things and revived my dying motivation for the visual arts. I love all the work you guys do and I look forward to seeing more of it!

Will I keep going to the extreme left side, and that big cylinder, dunno why. Lots of shit going on which is nice, pulls you in and makes you want to explore for a bit.
I like the blueish color, makes everything cold and lifeless
