sort of lighting trick(?)

Hi, prolly a pointless thread but I'm curious to know if anyone has ever experimented shading stuff this way,

by projecting colors instead of imagining the lightsource etc.. I think it can help me sometimes if i have a hard time figuring out planes
Never saw that anywhere so I thought I would share, then again I could have not looked well, or it might be just a silly way to do things :)

I'm no where good enuf to comment on the method, but I know what you mean about things you do that you feel really smart for doing, but hten feel silly when showing someone else incase it turns out to be a dumb way... it seems like a novel idea tho...
