invest in a little known technology company known as "microsoft"

(ok, I'm not actually old enough to have been alive in time for that but if I was^ )

And never do your paperround on your bike. Walk it always. (When I was 13 I came off my bike, breaking an arm, resulting in 3 operations and my left arm unable to straighten itself anymore than a 45 degree bend, it's annoying)

Don't believe the old guys, don't believe the young guys. Don't believe in movies, and never believe you know about anything. Find out what you can believe in, and start walking in that direction. Never stop, don't let anybody push you from your path.

I guess my younger self would just go "Huh? Can i go back to playing Mario now?" Ah, the pure heart of a child.

Drop the fucking attitude.

Don't stop drawing for ten years like I did when I was twenty just because some dumb-ass game company screwed you out of over 200 drawings and characters designs and disk cover.

Stay focused on your art. You might be someplace now if you did.

Yeah, you know guys that sketch better than you do, you know guys that paint better than you do, and you know guys that write or play music better than you do, but you don't know ANYBODY that can do it all as well as you do. USE YOUR TALENTS!

Instead, I joined the Navy because I didn't want the financial burden of school to get laid on my parents. Dumbass.

Work bloody hard, use what you've got, don't worry about the things you can't change, and don't be scared of taking a risk.

That covers it. Of course, it'll be weird thinking back in twenty years time, giving the current me advice from then...

dont fuck around. start drawing early. I dunno how "young" we're talking about. but if i was going to tell my 10 yr old self. i'd tell him :

1. Dont fuck around with games (as in vid games). its not a bad thing. but it gets addicting and blocks progress to everything.

2. Persue educatoin to the fullest. Go to the best colleges, get the best degrees

3. Have and maintain excellent health.

4. Draw, or in general, persue my hobbies to the fullest.

5. Invent something big so that I wouldn't have to work at shitty jobs where they dont give a fuck about you and they always wanna shit on you. Yea i just quit my fuckin job, and i'm happy cuz the fuckers were never fair. almost discriminatory, i'd say. sorry about teh language , kids.

i really liked that article.

also like this one a lot:

http://www.paulgraham.com/nerds.html

and this one!

http://www.paulgraham.com/hp.html (hackers and painters)

which is funny because one of my secrets desires is writing programs, are at least writing something to manipulate them... particulary ui/usability. this from a guy who is about as artsy fartsy as it gets :/

oops, sorry for derailing topic!

mmm

on topic: i would tell myself what that other dude just told himself: ask the cute girl out :).

I'd probably say something like, "Don't drink that obscure liquor that comes in white jerry-cans, especially if it's sold by truckers down at the docks, and don't accidently bump into and insult the only guy in town that owns a Glock.".

Slash
May 4th, 2005, 08:52 AM
I would say quite a few things.

like
"Put down those keys"
"put down those matches"
"Always have condoms in your wallet."
"She really does like you, dont act like a pussy for years and let her run off with that asshole. Tell her how you feel, she's not gonna make the first move" (that one goes 3x or something)
"DONT START SMOKING!"
"STOP! That water is just 2 feet deep!!!"
"That ice isnt safe to walk on."
"No, you CANT keep your balance up there!"
"That blue hairdye is gonna turn ugly dirty-greenish when it fades"

I would probably say "NO, thats a BAD idea" like a thousand times. But then again, the experiences i've gathered through life (fuckups in particular) have shaped me into the person i am today. And i like that person. So i wouldnt really undo anything..

Steph Laberis

"Don't leave that sketchbook at home!"
"He's not the one for you, let him go (rather than wait a year and a half more...)"
"Video games will not corrupt you, they will make you more creative!"
"DON'T MOVE TO CALIFORNIA WITH YOUR MOM!!! NOT FOR ANYTHING!!!"
"Call your friends."
"It's ok."

And finally, "Even if you don't feel like you fit in, it's not worth changing yourself for anyone else. You'll be better off without those people, your mom will have a meltdown anyway, your family will love you and the cheerleaders/jocks/dipshits will wind up drunk, barefoot & pregant or unhappily married, respectively."

Aaaah, the regrets of an art dork...

"Don't wait until the first day of college to hit the fool back, crack him in the face at school and he'll run away screaming and stop bullying you."

"Don't just sit around for two years watching a college art course go by, go draw something, no a lot of things"

other small ones include

"get down from there"
"don't do that"
"keep your fingers away from the door jam"
"water is not your friend"
"keep away from him, unless you have a big stick"
"turn the T.V. off then pull the plug"
"hitting a girl is not always wrong (especially if she is bigger and punches harder than any of the other lads in your class, I'm sure she was a lady boy)
"don't jump from there"

If you can't tell I was bullyed a lot at school, mainly because I refused to fight back (through fear of expulsion), I really enjoyed my first day at college though. :rendered:

This is a fun topic. Have you ever started doing something and you made a lot of progress but then you stopped doing it for some reason and after some time you said to yourself "man if I only would have stuck to it how madskilled would I be right now."

Try this. Now that you have looked back, look forward. Get a piece of paper and get comfortable.
* Now think of three things, which if you did them consistently every day for 5 years, would make your life better, more fulfilled.
* See yourself 5 years ahead having committed to these things and how fucking great you feel.
* Now write them down.

Mine are
1. Draw a minimum of one hour a day 6 days a week, no matter what.
2. Go out every weekend and practise approaching women.
3. Practise the guitar in between work breaks.
4. Practise different breakdance moves every day.
5. Go swimming twice a week.

3 are more than enough, but it's fun to keep going.

* Now start doing them.

Would be fun if you'd share what you come up with!

Heh, nice twist ngnorden. ;) I'll have a go.

1. Like your suggestion, get out and sketch for an hour a day, even if you've been drawing all day at work, or just doodling the same thing for an hour. Get the juices moving again.

2. Excercise, girl - WALK to work, because you can and get off the couch/away from the video games, even though you really wanna play the new Metroid.

3. Say "I love you" to at least one friend/family member a week, you will not have some of those people in your life 5 years from now.

4. Lighten up - you're gonna make mistakes, you're gonna have to live with being uncertain about yourself during this time of your life. Whatever the outcome, it's gonna be fine, you will adapt and the people who love you most will understand you.

5. Make time for your indulgent hobby - sign up for horseback riding again, go help out at the MSPCA, women's center or teach an art class. Do something to inspire you when you're not drawing - art isn't your WHOLE life!

Well, it's a start...!

Dont bother trying to make friends with people. Lead your own life and screw them all. Anger doesnt even come close to describing it!

Walk/ride down the roads/across the fields that youve always wanted too.

Do NOT start drinking Yukon Jack in 7th grade just because your locker partner has older brothers he can steal it from.

Do not poke that skank that gave you crabs. I don't CARE if she had a great rack... RUN from that ho! :nohope:

Do not continue drinking Yukon Jack in High School... in fact... don't drink ANYTHING that makes you that freaking destructive. Plus, you will find that shooting Yukon out your nose the next morning is just not cool.

Ask Penny out... she really gets HOT.
Don't ask Janet out... you are going to fuck it up pretty badly.
Holy sh#t... stay away from Psycho !! Don't fall for her crap... you WILL suffer if you do. >:{

And last but not least:

Get some freakin guitar lessons! You could have made it if you wouldn't have dicked around like you did (shit, you could have been touring with Slayer by now). :\

Killer thread to come back to. Haven't been here in a while and I can see why I have missed it.
