Hello people.

I have been watching these forums for so long but havent participated. Mainly because im just a beginner when it comes to drawing, and having lack of confidence heh. Which is of course really bad.

Anyway i decided that to make myself better at drawing and have a better eye. this would probably be the best way to get those things flowing. ill try to update it daily.

I know my heads are off and im working on that. doesnt even look like me :)

Very good start. That doesn't look so "from zero" :). I like mostly the second pic. Keep it up. I'll be watching this thread.

Welcome Mowgz!

I am not quite sure if your confidence will increase here...
seeing the amazing work of all the guys.
But it definitely will help you improving your skills.

What you posted is good stuff, proportions are most important,
noticing the issue you will have less problems with other things.

The main thing you can do is practicing, draw!
No words will help you more than a concentrated drawing!

What i can give you on the way is:

make some special feature studies of the eye, nose and so on.
Knowing how it is build up gives you feedback, and helps you
noticing if something is wrong!

Keep it up!

I can see framgent of some hand in the corner. It looks interesting.
The nose sketches are small step forward. Generally very good rendering. Besides shadows maybe you could pay also more attention to purely linear drawings (like done with ink).
Keep posting new stuff. Every day will be one day closer to this hero :).

Welcome to CA!

Definitely not a 0... get that out of your head!

Good that you're not thinking in rendering but rather proportions. Very good. Your ears stick out a little too far though... look at your in the mirror and draw them at different angles to get that down.

Lookin' good, real loose quick sketches, good proportions. The jaw looks a little too rigid, let it flow!

Keep it up, I'll check back in on you soon.

This looks nice. Perhaps the sketches are a little crude. They look like they've gotten a heavy-handed treatment. I'd say everything looks right, anatomically and such, but a little more refinement to how you handle the shading/values would make them more polished... Yeah. But then, I guess it might be your stylistic approach to the subjects... so I guess I'm saying, whatever gets the work done is good, and this is good!

I have a long way to go to get where I want to be, but I have picked up some great tips on these boards and in classes, that I will now bestow upon you.

First, I think you are definitely on the right track, It looks like you have the drive to keep at it.

When you are doing portraits, the eyes are the most important part. They can make or break your picture. If you can nail the eyes, it will be recognizable, which is what you are going for. This is not to say that verything else isn't important because it is, but just keep that in mind.

Next, slow down a bit. I remember when I first started, I did things really fast and never took the time to actually look at what I was drawing. As a general rule of thumb, look twice as much as you draw. Just slow down and take your time. It's hard not to want to do things fast when you look at guys like marko and wes and andrew who can do things quickly. That takes years to work up to, so concentrate on quality.

As far as the rendering goes, the thing that had the biggest impact on me was carving out the shadows. This is kind of similar to comic book style art. The idea is to block in the shadows as if it were a solid mass. This helps if you have a strong light source when you are learning. Set up infront of a mirror and then put a spot from the side or something. Then, draw the shadow as if it were a solid shape, using lines. Don't worry about any gradation, you want a solid line deviding the light areas from the dark areas. Once you go through the whole image like that then you can move onto refining it, but right now just concentrate on that, I find it's a great exercise. You can also do it with the light areas. If you get some gray paper or whatever colour you want, and use white charcoal or a white pencil grayon and block out the highlights instead of the shadows. Thats a good exercise because you will concentrate on the light instead of the shadows. It's easy to forget about the highlights when you are rendering something, you become so focused on the dark areas.

Last thing I will leave you with right now is to do pages and pages of circles and lines. This is no joke, do it everytime you draw, as a warm up. Use your whole arm, not you wrist to do this. This will improve you line quality and your control of the pencil.

I hope this makes sense. It's really fucking long, so if there are lots of spelling mistakes, figure it out :dur:

If you have any questions, expecially about the shadows thing, ask me. I can show you examples if you want.

Keep at it, and take comments to heart. Your drawing will improve without a doubt.

Hey, Thanks a lot for the feedback and yeah they are very crude but its cool when its sketches. lol, just to make myself feel better :D
I know i gotta work on rendering, need to work on every aspect of drawing. And theres so damn much... wonder how old ill be before i get it down to a T... heres hoping i wont be old and wrinkly :O

Anyway drew a lil bit before i head off to a party. Can i be bothered to actually go? Not really, if only everything in this world was free :(

I like the shape of those legs, they are looking nice.

Hey man, just cause they are sketches doesn't mean they can't look amazing. Don't make excuses. Not that I am bashing your work, not at all, just keep that in mind.

BTW, you will never ever get any of this stuff down to a T. Ask any of the pros here and they will tell you that they are constantly trying to improve themselves. That's just the way it works, its a neverending process, so strap yourself in and get ready for a long ride.
