I was kind of curious. I know that there are Andrew Loomis books online, but why the heck won't they just reproduce his books again? I mean I dont see how it could be so difficult. There are other books that are pretty old, but they are still being reproduced (like bridgeman's for example). Am i just missing something here? :er:

I know of several different parties who have tried to get the rights over the years. Evidently his heirs have no interest in having them reprinted. Fortunately they seem equally uninterested in keeping them off the web, so count your blessings.

I was in my local art supply store recently and saw that part of Drawing Heads and Hands had been reprinted. It was just 48 pages, but it gave the basics of the head drawing portion. Walter Foster was the publisher I think.

I saw that before too. but I think we artists today need the full on books that loomis made years ago. ;)

sorry to butt in guys, but is it possible to print the online books? I hate reading from my monitor, and would like to print ou a copy for myself, if its possible

ofcourse it is. I hate reading from the monitor as well. Why don't you just burn it on a cd then have someone print it out for ya?

Take the .pdf and burn it to a CD, then bring it to Kinko's or some other printing store. They'll print and bind it for you, so you've got a nice little book instead of a huge stack of sheets.

I don't say this from personal experience, but printers (kinkos, namely) are rather stringent about printing copyrighted materials. Enough so that they may refuse to print it. :/

You don't need to go to Kinko's to print it out, just print them out at your work. That's what I did. I bought a ream of Hammermill paper and just printed out ten pages at a time to make it look like I was doing actual work. After about two or three days I had all the books. Used my office's hole puncher and put the papers in three binders.

The sad thing is, the .pdfs are at 72 dpi and not 300 so they print out rather fuzzy. You can't read more than a few pages without your eyes hurting. I find it best to read the .pdfs on screen and then jot down important notes and such.

Also, a while ago someone here actually contacted the old publisher of the Loomis books and asked why they aren't in print. The guy posted the publisher's reply. I think he said there wasn't a great demand for the books. Bastard.

I printed them on a home printer. It took an entire day, but it happened.

GOOD BINDING SOLUTION:

-Use Elmer's Glue between every single page
-place duct tape around the spine
-place under half a set of encyclopedias overnight (being sure that the glue isn't seeping out)
-hammer three small nails into the binding, equally spaced, and then bend them double
-rotate the nails so that they're clamped over the spine, and then use a ViceGrip at increasingly smaller increments to smash them into the spine until you can't feel them anymore

I heard that 3 different people have the rights or the actual printing plates to the books. One of them is the owner of Associates in Art in LA. They can't all agree on reprinting or something.
