Hi. :rendered: :) This is a digital portrait I'm doing of my dad, but I'm strugling with where I need to put the highlights on his face :upset: could someone point me in the right direction?
this is what i've done so far. Sorry about the size

Without any reference this would be my guess.
You have light coming from back and top of head. That would indicate you'd need a secondary light to show the contour of the profile.
Just add layers in Multiply Mode and play with it.

Ta NoSeRider, I'm not using PS, I'm using paint shop pro :[ so i dont actually know what multiply mode is :bashful: . But it really helped :}
although I was really going for a lightsource coming from the front and slightly to side of his face so that you see more light on his cheek and neck, does that mean I need to change the light on his hair?
thanks again :^^:

Well that's not exactly optimum lighting for a portrait... however, NoSeRider has a good solution with a secondary light illuminating the profile (possibly a back-light?).
Also, if you're working up an accurate portrait I'd strongly suggest you work from reference, certainly until you're a lot more sure of your abilities.
Good luck with it!

This guy looks as my dad too :} I think that you should put more colour in shadows. Look at this tutorial if you want: http://itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm
good luck

Quick note: PSP has Multiple Mode as well.

Should look something like that, depending on what version you have.
When you colour over something on a layer set to Multiply, the colour will be transparent but show up darker--great for shadows.
Try the different Layer Modes out. Screen is good for highlighting.
