I haven't really worked with envoriment before so i don't really know the princibles i should be taking into thought.

nivbed earlier helped me out with color ideas and the sky, any other suggestions you can give me?

as you can see I'm trying to make the pov very far away, the 2 little guys are suppose to be figures inspecting the columns, started the drawing using the DSG wonder idea.

any tips would be helpful.

I would try to improve those columns and make them look ancient, with mystic maya-atlantis-styled signs on it. That would be cool :)

the last column looks a tad bent.. and yea add lots of detail to them :D

if i was working on this i would try and make it more atmospheric, add a touch of dustyness and enahnce the beams of light from the top, make them quite a bit more visible, maybe add some obstructions up top to break the beam up a little.. also i would make where the light is illuminating the floor alot brighter and warmer.

reminds me of 5th element a little :p

good points, the ground looks a bit like water...

i'm not sure how much detail i will bring to the columns because i want them to fell very ancient, maybe i could put huge "brick" like textures on them.

i suck at elements like dust.. i could give it a shot though

i attempted a paint over, and i found that you might be able to fix some problems if you redo your structure.. make perspective grid and draw in your light source with rays, with those 2 guides you should be able to calculate your light ray casts and get accurate shadow castings. :x

its a matter of adjustments id say, not a redo.

warning: dont follow this grid, its fast and inaccurate.. i would make a 2 point, as you can see, the side of the grid the pillars are on is on the bad side of the 1 point perspective, skewing horribly.. but i hope you get the idea.

You should practice environments more. Ive alwyas liked your figured drawings, but you need to work on evironments. TRy to get a little bit more texture into them and define things a little bit more.. its hard when youre doign environments becasue there is so much to draw. But what I like to do is define areas with quite a bit of detail and other areas with less.. it makes the work alot more interesting.

Take a look at almost any environment sketch for video games, movies, whatever..

Feng Zhu and Sueng Ho are very good at this type of stuff..

Davi find some reference material to help you out with the sky, the background even the pillars and such... use detail for focus and depth of view...

look at other paintings done for inspiration and knowledge on how to see shape for objects near and far.. as things go away from you they tend to grey..

good luck,

PS if you want to help crit my mermaid Id appreciate it. thanks bro..

peace.

I like what you've done, the figures look good, I think it's maybe missing other scale references, though: at the moment it's only the figures that make it look big, take them out and you'd have no idea of it's size.

You could introduce an human-scaled feature into the scene to emphasize the scale...a seat, steps, a door into the column, tiles on the floor, a handrail. Not lots of detail, but a few small ones that give subtle clues to the scale.

I guess I'd think about what the columns are made of: either they're carved insitu from rock, and need a corresponding surface, or are manmade / assembled, in which case they could be broken up into modular sections which might give a greater sense of scale.

The viewpoint intrigues me too.

You could look at Michael Whelan's work to see how he shows scale; I'm not so keen on most of his stuff, but he's done a couple of paintings with a really immense sense of scale to them.
