2 years later and I'm finally drawing seriously, however. Sadly enough I lost all my old stuff, I will rescan it one day I think. But for now, the images start again at the bottom of page 2. Thank you for visiting :)

Heya :D
Great that you started a sketchbook!
About your sketches, they look good for a start. Try to get a hold of a anatomy book and study the muscles for a while, then try to make the same poses again. I bet that your sketches will improve much! I also recommend you to do life drawing and reference drawing, they will help you (and me) the most.
When you scan or have scanned, try to adjust values with programs. I don't know what freeprograms that can do that, but I'm sure theres some, if not included with the scanner. I assume your sketches have darker values 'irl', if not you should just ignore me ;)
Anyways. I hope to see some updates now, cheers !

@MorteM: thanks for your critics, I already use the bridgeman books at the moment, but not enough. I'm also drawing from a life model every week but my teacher wants to develop how to draw abstract art instead of developping technical skills. I'm already searching for a life drawing group in my area. But no luck so far.
My scans suck hard yeah, I'm able to use Photoshop, but I uploaded 88 images in 2 days so the urge to adjust 88 images isn't really there. But for the rest of the updates I certainly will
@Look: Yeah, it also isn't working for me. I called my host and they blame on the server hardware. But it should be working soon. Bit of a lousy timing to go down now :)

MorteM said pretty much everything I wanted to say.
I guess I'll just be nip picking a bit. For the guy in the lower half of the second drawing, his lower part of the stomach/torso area needs to be turned toward the viewer more.
And either darken your pencil lines a bit, or use level adjustment to make the lines darker. =)
Now you just have to keep this up and update daily. :P

Yeah.. what people have said about the contrast/levels :)
You have some very cool ideas! I'm not going to comment on the anatomy, other than the muscles. You've got much of the big musclegroups down, but they're all the same "intensity", like your characters have flexed every muscle in their bodies. Anatomystudies (the everlastin mantra of CA) is the key.
Keep updating!!

Something to look at specifically would be the muscular bulgy-ness. Prom gives the subjet a good treatment in his tutorial (http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm). Pretty cool concepts. I don't see a lot of stuff from ref or faces...
My high school art teacher kept a much higher focus on craft media (sandblasting glass, etc.). It was useless and very frustrating. Look at Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. It helped me out quite a bit with my line quality, among other things.

It took some time, but finally I'm back behind my pencils again. So here is some new stuff I did last week. Among some things my first studies from an model, model drawing is the best absolutly love it, and some thinks from reference and from imagination.
Also a nice fella I met today, wich should also be around the forums, suggested me too ditch the pencil for some time and start using a pen for more, so I did. But I'll save that for the next week when I got acces too a scanner again.
Anyway here it is, and crit the hell out of me :)

Heya!
Try to focus more on the general shapes rather than the details. As in your latest figure drawings, you've added some shadows and details on their faces while leaving the shape of the bodies to single lines.
Look closer at the lines around the bodies, they're not that smooth or straight as you've made them.
I think your faces are suffering from something similar. They would probably look better if you gave them some more basic shape.
Nice that you're working hard! Lot's of sketches = lot's of improvement. Though you could post a bit more often ;)

Not bad Duq.
Some of the faces seem skewed and uneven though. Keep an eye out for the symmetry, and keep working from life. Books are good to start with, but all sketches and instructional drawings are "pre-digested". Nothing beats a good sit down with a person/animal/landscape/whatever.
Keep at it!

@ Mike: Thanks for your critic, gave me a lot to think about. As you see in todays update I spend some time on eyes. Getting their shapes in my head as well as the stuff surrounding it. Cant wait to test some of the new learned things on new heads. Although it is still far from perfect, and really have a problem recognising the planes surrounding the eye.
@Glikster: Thanks for the comment, I will definitly get some more work done on more bodies next couple of days. Right now it feels like my biggest problem area. References are ready, and I'm ready to go :)

Hey duq, everything looks nice here. Maybe take your time a bit more when you do sketches. When you draw heads, draw in the construction lines and don't hesitate to erase and correct parts.
Oh and make sure you put hands and wrists on your ppl ... speaking from experience here, the one thing you don't want to slack on is drawing hands :P
Goodbye..fromthevoid
August 13th, 2006, 07:41 PM
It seems you are doing the correct things and are actually (gasp!) learning from them! My only advice would be to draw things other than the human body. I mean all of art isn't just the human body, is it? (Ignore the big ConceptArt banner at the top of the page)

Hey duq, great progress!! Your handling of form seems to have improved quite a bit over the last few updates.. I agree with john about the construction and taking your time... Theres no need to spend hours making a line perfect, but a few good lines in the right places can make all the difference if they are clean and precise.
Keep up the dedication1!!

For my cookie i say watch proportions. there are certain measurements that every person has in common. like the distance between the eyes and eye-to-mouth ratios etc. i lightly draw guidlines sometimes when the perspective looks wonky on a character. or use a reference. anyway, look up facial ratios and see what'cha come up with.
:)for your cookie: i like the trees. and the skulls rock.

@J.Peckham : Thanks for the comment, sadly enough my gf ate the cookies. Chocolate flavored, you know how that goes ;) I tend to set up a nice guideline and then just ignore in some later phase. Its silly and should gesome more focus on that. As for the facial ratios I think its getting better and better with the more faces I draw. As long as keep it in the back of my head :)
Overall I think I need more studies from life, like the skulls and trees :)

More lifedrawing duq! Your figures show you are inventing a lot of structure where you could rely on actually "knowing" whats there. Try using the plane / masses approach you use now on lifedrawings a bit more - try drawing your classmates or ppl on the bus / train for instance. Keep at it :)
Neireth
September 12th, 2006, 03:45 PM
Good to see you're practicing the basics and mastering them too (something I should go back and do as well), but as John said - more drawing from life! It's great with quick sketches, to nail the proportions and just do it all over and over again.. But I'd love to see some longer studies, where you try out values and such more, trying to capture how the light reflects on the body, etc etc. Would be really nice to see.
And studies of the whole body! More portraits as well, as (yeh, I've mentioned this before to ya, hehe), sometimes they're a bit skew and proportions a bit off. But the last page is looking really great, so just keep at it!
Now you have lots of drawing to do, heheh. Yeh, I know, so do I.
Great stuff Duq.

Nou, hoppa, snel weer updaten, ok?

Hey man i love seeing progress in one place, and this has it in spades. One thing that bothers me though is that you seem to go very quick with your Self portraits. If you dont please dont be offended, but i think you should spend more time on a single Self portrait.
By more time i mean alot of time try hours 2-4 is nice, but longer is best. You dont have to do every SP like this but it will send you closer to your goal (which i assume do to all the faces around in the sketchbook is excellent portraits) Also try to work on a large piece of paper( I like to use 11" X 14"= 27.9X35.6cm), using your arm insted of your wrist. This will help point out the places that are not just like what you see in the mirror, and it also makes it so that if you want to add detail or something cool at the rendering stage you can do so with out a magnifying glass :)
Start out with lines (as you usually do :confident) but make sure you measure. What i like to use is my eye, because it is one of the easier to identify placement on your face. Take your time, truly see yourself in the mirror. If you measure yourself correctly you should start to almost go into a state where your mind can see your face on the page in front of you. Now when you have your lines down and your happy with them get up and do something else.
This will give your mind a chance to refresh and when you return you will more than likely find something wrong (happens to everyone) before you start rendering. So this gives you a chance to fix it. This is something that should be done with everything you are taking as a serious piece of art.
Btw keep doing what your doing, your on the right path to greatness.

Not bad stuff here at all...You kinda let your proportions get the best of you and you go wayward with them...try to keep them tight. You can experiment with a different style, but it should more or less be around the same for each sketch you attempt....

Todays update, someone once said to me that if you want to learn how to draw hands, you should make a batch of 100 hands. So I did :)
Mr-Joe
April 8th, 2007, 10:23 AM
Hah! Thats awesome, can you draw hands now with out looking at reference?
A suggestion for the portrait a bunch of posts up,, Try flipping both the images and looking at them real real good before you start laying in some pain, look for differences between yours and the original, not similarities. Look for the differences of values in small sections of the painting and how they relate to each other in yours and in the ref.
Good works man.

I was looking at some of the faces in these last few updates, and it seems to me that you are accidentally "stretching" the face. Some parts of the face looks like they are just sliding away and that is a "NO-NO". Try to do just heads and the then work on doing just the side of the head with whatever helmet or head gear you want to put on it. Once you do that, switch to the other side and repeat it. This should help you work on making the faces fit accurately and keep you away from sliding.
Also, it would also help to work on different angles/faces (1/2, 3/4, full, etc)

good update! the last scans have nice tendencies, but i'll echo john in that u seem to be making a lot of assumptions in your structures. there is a lack of unity in your anatomies...weight displacement and direction seems uncertain. keep up the studies...and also: try to consider ur charas as more than just lines on paper. keep in mind that you are drawing a person. your ability to focus and understand what you are doing is reflected only in the level of integrity of your art. i realize that these are sketches / studies, but still...there's a vagueness in ur approach u need to overcome - a slight shift mentality might do wonders for you:)

anyway update.
A company that invited me for an internship interview asked me to do a workflow for a simple creature from concept to model. I didnt get it finished but they where happy with the result, since I only had like 2 days :)
For the rest, train sketches. The sketches arent the best, but didnt sketch in a while and needed to warm up I guess, the last few faces came out nice though I think.
And I started doing the Peer Project excercises. Again, Idiot Apathy you rock, learning heaps <3

Todays update, two more digital thingies. One Bandito chicken, and just a doodle thingy. I'm trying to get some more pen control in PS and get rid of my odd little habits when using the tablet. I tend to lean my head in the direction of my strokes, so I tend to skew everything and mess proportions.

A page of reffed faces. Its a 25% zoom of the size i work in. So they are actually quite big when at 100%. I'm working more on measuring, perspective etc, failing horribly I think. And I tend to pat with my wacom pen, wich I really really hate.

Hey you,
This is awesome stuff. unfortunatly I can't see your posts in the first pages, probably because they weren't attached? That totally reminds me I should attach my images from now on too.
But anyways, what I like about your sketches is some of em have this distorted thing going on, but still they look right.. more then right even. But I kinda got the feeling that wasn't a conscious choice, but just you going with the flow of the drawing and making it work.
Might be a bit bold and sort of none of my business but I encourage you to explore that more and be more conscious of it, if you arn't already.
I like where your skills are going, looking forward to seeing more.

Time for an update! All of this from last week I believe.
We start with plus minus 40 studies of the chest area then 160 gestures (i thought they where 200 but miscounted >_>). Then some scans from my lovely moleskine wich are all done in the public transit. And as last the last week Chow, Heavy gunner, that I never finished.
And thanks for commenting :D And I'm trying to get more loose, its something that has been haunting me for ages now, and I hope that doing gestures will get me out of it one day :)

Todays update, just boring stuff. 9 studies of the pelvis bone. And after that 20 gestures from ref, trying to apply what I learned from the pelvis. I got nothing fun in my moleskine, so no updates from that this time :) And I was just generally lazy this week....

pelvis studies are looking great! i think it's mostly overlooked part.. so important tho.. :) good, wish u had shown the backbone and where the leg bone actually starts.. (whatever that's called...)
gestures also looking very good, it's nice to try and simplify a photo and study off it. I notice you are being too obsessive with boobies :P yeah we all do I guess but try and focus on the rib cage rather than boobies. they can be added easily after.. make sure u get those feet in, they can be painful if u keep overlooking them. :)

Ehm some moleskine stuff, random people on the train as always. And a giant robot also done in the train. Wich remembered me, that it isnt smart to think about lightning when you dont have an eraser and you have been shading for 20 minutes already. Oh well, better luck best time.

Matt: They are mostly from ref, the once from imagination will suck so hard coming weekend :( And your sketchbook is still better... ;)
TOdays update, several studies on different topics. Some closer look to what the muscles do when the leg rotates. I redid some of the last update because of the proportions, I think I'm still off and should just find a reliable way of measurement. Also a started on the neck, still wonky but that will go away with some more studies over the next week I hope. And moleskine stuff, one more robot inspired by WARMACHINE and random train doodles.
Thats about it ^^

Hans got a job! His mum got him to work for the butcher where he would be in the freezer, preparing the meat to go into the store. When his mum was done telling about his new job, she pulled out a small little present. Hans quickly unwrapped the shiny paper and found the cutest little bunny keychain you ever saw. Hans quickly ran off to the shed in the backyard, found a large nail and a hammer, and bam! He nailed the keychain in his hand. That way he would never loose the bunny, since he is so clumsy.
The next morning he ran to the butcher’s shop. Eagerly to get to work he bursts inside, only to meet the confused look of the butcher. After a brief moment of silence the butcher blinked his eyes and said “Boy, where are your pants?”

Its been a while, but here some more boring gestures. :D
Also I landed my first freelance job as a game artist, or first job as an artist in general :D
About the update, the first one is from the life, the rest from imagination. Its slowly getting better although I think I'm making heads to small en legs to long again. I think I'm slowly loosing the stiffness in them, so thats good I guess :)

Just a bit of messing around in PS today

January 7th, 2008, 07:26 AM
Wow, great studies there. And seems that you're getting the heads better proportioned in the last ones as well. :) And sweet hips.
Really like the last girl in the last update, especially the headstuff. The first one looks to me like it has a little too small face again though. :)
*mumbles something about needing to get back on track on her own studies*
Props, keep working. :)

Thanks for commenting Sork :D Yeah small faces keep hunting me :( Sometimes it goes alright, and some times they are suddenly back. Right now I'm trying to draw the chest and pelvis first and then the head. Maybe it helps ;)
Moar gestures! And gonna try to sketch some original things in PS later today

Very solid gestures Duq! You should think about giving the Spartan Training Camp a try with all those gestures you pump out.
On a different note I would like to see some creatures or some environments, something just to change up drawings a bit
Cheers!

January 10th, 2008, 05:50 PM
Thanks for visiting Lad :D Yeah I should try some more stuff, I have no clue if I can actually draw envirioments or creatures to be honest. So a bit scared perhaps, but cant let that stop me ^^
But for now, more gestures!

Hey thanks for stopping by in my sketchbook :)
I was going to say something very contructive here about proportions (heads too small, arms to long or short sometimes etc) but in your last post you seem to have solved most of those things :) Your studies remind me of the things I should do a lot more of :P Do you use any reference for them? And if so, what reference?
And I agree, it would be nice to see you tackle environments and such as well, it's sometimes good to get out of your comfort zone now and again.

January 14th, 2008, 06:33 PM
Thanks for stopping by Yoitsi :D
Thanks or the crit about tiny heads, and the arms. Although the last post had less of it, I'm sure it will be back :p All the ones in the last post are digital, I do less from life then I should really...
And yeah I should get out of my comfort zone, although I'm still not sure if I should go toward creatures or envirioments right now. I still have so much to learn about cloth, armor, and more dynamic poses. But I'm doodling alot more, so who knows where that will go :D
=//=
Tonights update, did some lifedrawing, studies etc today. And just wanted to unwind a bit. I was checking some Moebius stuff, had Daft Punk playing on iTunes and this is the result I guess :D
edit: seeing some perspective problems, and clothing errors now :<. But oh well bedtime ;(

The last one looks hella sweet! Gonna throw in some values in there as well?

You can do anything if you practice it! Really nice line work on the last one. The hands/face look superb! Practice things that are unfamiliar to you everyday. If you think one thing is really hard to draw, draw it! Don't be afraid, you'd be surprised at what you can do with dedication.

oh man i can def see some serious MINfluence in these latest works :)
your gestures and anatomy have gotten loads better since you started getting mentored. lines are looking better too. how about some value studying soon! [omg master copies! weeee]
seeing your progress is great, looking forward to more :)

dCept: Thanks for visiting again :D I dont think I'll throw in values, gonna get some value studies done with mastercopies first I think :D Tex gave me some awesome Boeugeaureau (what a name) stuff from artrenewal that I can play with :D
mattGamer: Yeah Matt! We can! Roar! Been trying alot more dynamic gestures lately, and backsides! And more cloth!
Tex: Thanks tex, I take the MINfluence as a compliment for now ;) Mastercopies weeeeeee! Gonne start with that Cherub one I think... Seems hard though
=//=
Update! Just some silly sketching stuff. I tried to draw stuff fast, like thumbnails. But I failed and still spend way to much time on it, I guess I'm overthinking stuff like armor.

*craks whip* :) good stuff duq.. more studies tho.. more!! you can always dip into designs soon.. I notice your facial features are often too off, more so the head.. some designs came out really good.. some too clunky and too busy.. but we'll get into them later I guess.. anyways.. talk more about things later. :)

pretty nice stuff
very good gestures and actions.
i noticed that you often have the proportion of the legs off. you could elongate the fibula/tibula and your figures would look much better
careful on the min influence. i too am hugely influenced by him and i love his work to death but you have to be able to set yourself apart.

your studies look very interesting. This is something I always recommend to people who ask me about drawing: practice practice practice!! Live models are best.
I love your noses!! are your facial studies taken from real life references, or fantasy? (sorry about the ignorant comment, but my eyes are so tired I can hardly see what everybody has written so far).
How often do you do studies?...still have to check out your other stuff :) Liking your style so far ;)

matt; thanks buddy!
wookiedabo: Thanks :D Thats whay I do them for, although it tends to get boring at times :D
Bumskee: thanks Min ^^ Yeah we havent really touched designing yet, so just trying to find my own ways at times. I know you dont mind ^^. Thanks for the crit about the faces, I didnt see it a month ago, but ouch.
Roidvoid: Thanks for visiting. Yeah, I'm still having a hard time getting everything I learned together, so proportions tend to vary, alot. The minfluence is something that is hard to avoid at the moment, he does teach me after all. We have a different cultural upbringing though, so when I grow up and actually do some design works you will prolly see a difference in subjects and design choices.
dcept: haha yeah, his whipping is far worse on msn then here though :D Thanks for dropping by !
Plaasjapie: Yeah practice practice! The faces tend to vary way to much, looking back at some of them I really dont know anymore wich was from life and wich from imagination :D I try to practice atleast 2 hours a day, and at most, all my free time. Thanks for visiting :D

wiee update, had some crunchtime at work, so didnt had alot of drawing time. I did actually went to an atelier passed month for lifedrawing, and did alot of rhythm studies, or well trying to get some feeling for it.
Right now Min and me are focussing on quickness in the gestures. Foremost trying to not lift my pen so much, wich is damn hard... Oh well a page from today with gestures, wich still took to much time :p

I haven't been here for ages but sure you have done so many great exercises, and you have improved huge, I can see huge amount of influence from bumskee which is another great thing, my only suggestion is drawing more male character which give you better understanding about muscel and weight and when you put design on characters don't do too random and too rough one, think about more how custome and weapon interact with the character's weight even in thumbnail stage, but definately you are aiming really right direction keep up the great works.

Excellent work. Admiring your dedication, and feeling very inspired to just draw draw draw!
I don't know how you convinced a great like bumskee to tutor you, but good wheedling. And by posting it all up here we can all learn a little from the process.
I'm at a similar point to you I think, tho a bunch older! Been working as a freelance animator for some time, and want to make the shift across to character/concept design. Have been surprised in the last few weeks of working at it, just how hard it is! So much learning to do. But your work reminds me to just keep at it :)
This last page of gestures is definitely the best. Keep on keepin on bud!

yeah studies, of Vilppu. Trying to get a bit more of a hold on cubes. If you would go through my sketchbook, you might notice I barely ever did any, so far its being a revelation for me. studies are obviously helping your anatomy and ability to draw dynamic forms... I always hated the squares my self
, they feel so unnatural and awkward. now you have a handle on these studies lets see you do some thing with em! I particularly think the draperis show progress. now do a finished piece. Some thing simple. yet showing all the these new skillz yyouve been building!

Soja: Hahaha, its easy. Do a zillion of gestures :D Yeah finished stuff, soon I hope :D
Frank: Hey dutch guy, thanks for visiting :D Yeah also started with Bridgman and still use him at times. I found him to be a bit advanced when I started though, but now his teachings are becomming better and better.
humanNature6115: Vilppu = <3
Buckster: Hey man, yeah you are definitly right. I got like this standard expression that I use for everything, its getting a bit boring. But I do think my faces are still off, so it will prolly be the next thing that I will put some hardcore study time if my mentor will be satisfied with the gestures.

Hey Duq, I love your dedication to anatomy studies (can I have some of it? :tihi: ), and the improvement really shows. They're balanced and the weight is where it should be. Although I know you love to draw the female form, I'd like to see some male studies as well, and focus on the different muscle groups and the bone structure, and more how it works with the whole figure, and not only in parts. Like you've done lately with your female studies and concepts. I hope I'm not too incoherent and you get what I'm trying to say. (way too much coffee today)
And oh, more faces! (Because it was some time ago, no?) With values! And lots of varying shapes and forms. And more than just small head thumbnails. Draw big. ;> Maybe even go a step further/deeper, and do eye/mouth/nose, etc studies. And well, just make the faces more interesting to look at, even though the shape, sex and so on varies, they somehow tend to look the same.
And you already know since yesterday what I think about environment studies, so I don't need to say it again, do I? Hehe. Plus I need the company.
Nah, but really, awesome, awesome improvement, and that last life study is really great, nice work with the colours.
Keep it up, this is really starting to look amazing. :) :asspat:
