so here, me and sajad126 have decided to do a bi-weekly thunderdome to draw environments and stuff, which we are self-proclaimed novices at. basically, things that arent people. with a mutual goal in mind of being able to create pimped-out environments at will, my goal is to wipe the floor with sajad's sad, sorry, Miami Heat-lovin keister. >:D
neutral party gives suggestions, open medium, submissions are due 2 weeks after we agree on the topic, neutral judge (if someone's willing). if the deadline is missed, that person forfeits that round. two man enter, one man leave! let's git it on!!!

well, since i dont hear many replies outside of you, why DON'T we do this nba playoffs style. rounds go home-away-home-away (you pick a topic, i pick a topic, and so on) until we get a winner. so, i offer you home court advantage. whats the topic bro?
btw, sorry for getting back so late. ive been at a touch rugby tourney since this past friday and i just got back tonight. undefeated and won the whole thing. schweeeeeeeT!!!

April 27th, 2005, 04:16 AM
ok lets first start off by saying. touch rugby? you are a fruit. lol , just kidding bro, ok lets decide a topic.........hmmm.......ok taking a shot in the dark, lets turn on the lights and see what weve got. ok our topic is going to be a city landscape but with a futuristic touch, also in the center the has got to be some brushery, a park or trees of some sort. i unno, how about it?

i like my alligator studies better...well, at least for the 'gator i ended up using. i think the pic came out well...the colors on the trees could have been better, i guess if i knew what i was doing or took more time with it. anyway, inks and color (digital watercolors in painter); judges?

Dude, no need to get worked up.
And if I may post an advice here, the final color drawing looks like something that could have been done with photoshop. When doing foliage in photoshop the irregular brushes are your friends. They allow you to get a natural effect with less work. In painter, you'd want to try with the sponges. In natural media, dry brushes work very well for this effect, as does splattering with a toothbrush.

toaster - thanks for lookin out.
qitsune - i have no problem with your picture. it is in fact a very nice swamp (much better than mine, i must admit; your color choice was outstanding) with a gator. however, this is not the place for it. the purpose of this thread is to motivate sajad and myself to get better at drawing environments through competition. to that end, we are not just posting art that we have lying around, we have to make new pieces that are on the topic that we specified. im not mad, i know youre new here. but now you know, and knowing, as they say, is half the battle. next time, instead of "hijacking" someone's topic (as you so put it), find the right place for what you plan on posting and then post there. or even create your own new post. heck, start a sketchbook. start your own thunderdome even. or even join ours. but please make sure youre sticking to the intended purpose of the thread you are posting in. be sure to read the stickys that are posted too; you'll know the rules and keep the administrators happy. then, everybody's happy. :}
besides that, thank you for the tip on brushes. i really have a long way to go with painting and coloring stuff. happy drawing.
still waiting for sajad...g'luck with your stuff man.

I'm afraid I came in waaay late and I know it's really just a competition between the two of you but it sounded like fun so please forgive the intrusion. This is my first posting, I hope it comes out right. I just read your thread at 11:00pm. Doh!! This is all that I was able to do in an hour. I didn't have time to put an alligator in it though.
And I'm going to say that between the two of you, Sajad won the match for his good use of dynamic camera placement. Very creative.

Sajad I'm stalking your drawings ;)
Very Sajad looking piece. Nice position of the camera.
I thought that pointy thing was some sort of boat.
The owner had climbed the tree when he saw the alligator. Could have worked :P
Keep this enviornment t-dome up.

so my sister forced me into going to tokyo this weekend to go watch some sumo wrestling :muscle: ...it was good, but not really worth the almost $500 the trip costed. i did get some good pics and good drawings out of it though, as well as some good food. sister's going back to the states tomorrow; ill miss her, but i cant wait to get my life back.
i too like the viewer placement in your drawing sajad; it gives it more of a personality from a storytelling angle. i wish you showed more of the swamp though; it feels kinda more just like a tree and a gator and some water. i also think i made my picture too flat, not enough character to the swamp, very generic. but hey, thats why we're doing this, right?
got your computer back yet man? while we're waiting for the judges to tabulate scores (how is that happening, i wonder?) we could pick the next topic and start working on that. your cityscape idea? 2 weeks?
love the drawing rusty; now tha's a swamp.
sajad126
May 15th, 2005, 04:05 PM

Hey you guys, fun thread. I just found it.
As long as I'm here, I'll leave a couple small crits.
purb - I'm definitely not an expert digital painter yet, but there are a couple crits I'd make on your swamp pic, first is that it could use some more value range. Right now all the color is pretty much the same value. It needs some shadow and highlights. Does that make sense? And, on the water, I think it might work better if the coloring you did followed the directions of the lines you drew to indicated the water surface instead of the coloring being so random looking.
sajad - I love the perspective of your pic. I think the reason the vine doesn't read like it is going down and then back up into the tree, is that you've drawn it pretty much the same width all the way. If you're seeing it in perspective, it would get bigger as it goes up into the tree and closer to the viewer.
Anyway, hope those help a little.
Like I said, this looks like a fun thread. I'll be watching the battles.

entry for the week. i think its kinda weak though...my first drawing, the concept was better, but the execution was horrible. i ended up hating it a lot, so i made a new one last night. anyway, here goes something something.

wow...i can't read. :dead:
for those that are wondering, me and sajad have been really busy as of late, and cause the idea we had for Game 3 was such a good one, we could not be satisfied with a half-butt drawing of Thor's bathroom (notice the error? i don't read well; my badd :bashful: ) and an invisible picture. so, after taking a break for a week, we will resume the current Thunderdome with the due date to be next week, Wednesday, i believe. and we will be drawing Cap'n America's bathroom. once again (for my sake), that's Cap'n America's bathroom.

man this is what i came up with. . .. its not very creative i guess now that i see it after a day. the only captain america thingy things that are theer are the flag rug, the name on the shower and the shield in a frame on the wall. wanted to do him taking a dump reading a mg but then i remembered no beings. just scenery. the deadline is 2morrow and we gotta show something. lets go purb !!!
so whats next?

where i was going with this was kinda "the darker side of captain america"; i ended up having too much fun with friends who came to visit from america to have any time to draw. so here's what i have. got a cave, some of red skull stuff to take his rage out on...good stuff. oh, and some other stuff i didnt get a chance to clean up. i got work tomorrow, ya' know.
