hey, nice start. you've got good variety. the rendering is descriptive yet quick and to the point which is bringing a lot of life to the drawings. i think you're right that some more hands and feet could be shown, but the ones that are there look good, especially the guy doin the like, inverted peace symbol. anyway, keep posting more of what you're doin.

Loomer: Thanks man, I actually do do comics a lot, im working on my own graphic novel right now (WHO ISNT THOUGH? COME ON!), but plan on sending some pages to marvel and other bigshots soon, as i look forward to rejection. :)
Small update, tomorrow is life drawing, so hopefully ill have some new stuff scanned in on thursday to update with.
the girl with the big breasts is teh only thing worth looking at on the page, everything else on it is shittay. I've recently come down with a brokencow fetish, i love his shorthaired girls, so i decided to take a stab at drawing my own.
ive just noticed that the hands were cropped! DAMNIT! oh well :@

hey hey! of the stuff i haven't seen already, the animals are my fave. i went to the zoo once and just ended up taking pictures, great job on those, especially staying away from making them stylized and keeping them realistic. oh, and guido.. haha... great 360 of him, i figured he'd have a forward hunch, what with being top heavy and all that...
ciao!

really cool stuff...may i ask if there is a reason for sketching with a blue pencil? (i see you aren't the first one so i was wondering why)
anyway, cool stuff (quite strange staring right into somebody's asshole, but whatever, guess that's anatomy too :D)
don't have any crits really, just keep posting (got any finished stuff? i'm curious)

I'm totally in love with his expressions, esspecially that smiles that makes him so rawr-worthy :D the 360 turn is really cool too, when i look at the front and the front-side it feels as if i could really touch him, and FEEL the 3D (if that makes any sense :' )
And i'm loving the hand and them life drawings, figures. Great portfolio and congrats once again on getting in :]

hey! thanks for the replies everyone :)
Cold: Thank you, I know I still have a long way to go before I can render and draw really convincing interiors and environments though! :(
Lewis: Yeah a whole freakin year! hahaha just goes to show how caught up I can get in everyday life and neglect the important things like updating my CA sketchbook. Thank you for your kind words :) and I'll do my best to keep this thing current.
Amarryth: Thank you, I sketched those out from photos, I never had time to go to a Zoo! :( I really want to make the trip someday. Actually I thought my animals were really stylized, just in my style. :D Hahaha yeah, I wish the front and back poses showed the hunch more though...
TheGnoll: I sketch in blue pencil because its erasable, I can get a wide variety of tones through it, and its a nice change from the greys. Yeah it was a quite a riot to draw that one out, I always stay in the same spot when I life draw, and the model usually rotates, and that pose was one of them, and well, I had to do what I had to do. :D Ive got some finished stuff, but from years ago, recently I've been working on this comic I want to release, of which i show a small preview in this post :) The first 2 pages are inked, but i want to redraw them, as my inking skills need SEVERE practice.
Atazure: Thank you! hahaha Im glad you like the expressions, I had fun making them! Thanks, I tried to flesh him out as much as I could, showing the weight is really important in creating a convincing character IMO. Hey, thank you! Im super excited to start next year.
Heres some non portfolio related work! :D

Some new sketchbook stuff! Apologies for images being cut, but my sketchbooks are way too big for my scanner, and im too lazy to scan in one page multiple times. The artwork isnt even worth the effort anyways.
A bunch of personal stuff, figure drawing 5mins or so, and studys of other stuff.
A really good critique i recieved a while back was that i have trouble maintaining a certain style. And its true, i feel like i draw everything differently everytime i draw. This is very frustrating. I want to draw the same things but different angles, it just seems like i draw them in different angles with different styles. Any tips?

Fantastic sketchbook. Love the life studies - so simple, and yet so life-like. I envy you there. I see a Manara influence in the chicks with their tongues out.
As for the style, just draw, draw, draw. It'll come in time (although I see a few characteristic features already). Plus, why would you WANT to limit yourself to one style? Versatility is key! ;)

Brall - Hey man, I hear ya, your on my msn but you never say a damn word. Hahaha, i usually say titilating, titalizing may work though.
Pennington - Thanks for the tip, I cant seem to wrap my head around it fully in 3D yet, I think I need to do more studies of skulls and heads in different angles from bridgeman or something.
Aremah - Thanks man! Ive just been working on making sure my line define forms, forgetting rendering. Now my rendering skills are sloppy and not to par! LOL Milo Minara? Yes, ive seen his work, it may have subconciously snuck up on me! :D Katsuya Terada was another huge influence, maybe too much so. Women with tongues out are sexy though ;) Well i want to work in comics, and to work in comics you need to have a definitive style. I do love being versatile though! :)

Oki: Thanks man, I guess character design is something ive always liked to do.
Lefran: Why thank you! keep drawing :D
Fellah: Thanks man, Look forward to your updates.
Quicksilver: Woot! some stars! I'd say do some comics, but I may be biased because I fucking love comics. ;)
Anticonner: Thanks for the critique man, I've been trying to incorporate variety into my types, progress is slow, and i get lazy. :( I find I end up drawing the same damn characters over and over. Im hoping school this september will break that habit.

Wicked! You know I love trees. and i love trees that stick out of water even more. You might want to (next time) try making more roots visible since it's so close to the water. and I know that a lot of cool water dwelling trees have these wicked thin roots that are all rope-like that wind everywhere. but yeah. possibilities are endless when it comes to trees!
like I said before just to keep the trunk near the water a little smaller so it looks more like it's growing out of the water and not like it was a full sized tree that was flooded.
i love the touch of the totem (?) that's there with it, gives a really neat feel of overgrowth to it.

hey guys, busted out this really quick speed paint in about an hour or so.
I was going to make it into a full fledged painting complete with rendering, but I saved it at a super low image size by accident! I'll have to have a go at it later on and see what I can do.
I plan on making this part of like a fullscale battle or something at a later date, just messing around with colours and seeing what I like.
Kina: Thanks for the wonderful knowledge and critique, your words are now ingrained into my brain for the next set of badass trees I may draw one day! :D
Burning Eyes: Hey man, anytime! Keep doing what your doing, and youll be better than anybody in no time. :)
Taj: Hell yes bro do it! Im only buying paul popes batman year 100 issue 4, Im mainly going around to show the new portfolio off.

Just started this one tonight! Im already liking it a lot, which is probably a bad sign... LOL What does everyone think of the composition? keep in mind this is super rough stages, so everything is tweakable! :D
Comments and critiques are greatly appreciated, and taken to heart!
Sodbrenner: Thanks man, I love drawing bikes, and hot women. :D
Brall: Hell yeah i know! its a small ikea desk but it was practically free so im not complaining! Thanks man, what do you think about this latest one?
Meatsworthy
August 15th, 2006, 09:49 PM
My initial thought is that there's stuff happening at the top with the ships, a strong horizontal divide, and the guys at the botton. Maybe try to link the top and bottom somehow so that the eye moves from one to the other? But my composition sense is not strong though, I'm always in too close.
silvestri99

August 16th, 2006, 01:55 AM
Latest update on the newest painting. Apparently im obsessed with the colour red, but my mind is drawing blanks on the colour of the powersuits. Yellow? Blue? anybody have any ideas?
Meatsworthy: I see what you are saying now, Composition is probably my weakest area. I think im going to re arrange the ships, and maybe hand positions or positions of people around so that the eye flows much better in the image. Thanks for critique mate! :)
Silvestri99: Marc Silvestri fan? Thanks for the compliment! I answered your question in your sketchbook, if you havent seen it already. If anyone else is wondering though, life drawings if not marked are usually 30, 20, 10, or 2 minute poses.

Great work man, been watching for a while but never had much to contribute... :)
You've been churning out some sweet work, especially love the recent paintings. Got a nice vibrant pallette, hope that in the future you'll transfer that into a comic form.
Colourwise you really do love the red pallette, try moving away and exploring more, its digital so its easy to do so. Those yellow accents work great, maybe even keeping them red but with a yellow lightsource (and blue bounce from the sky) would make em pop and be quite interesting. That gun thing on the left foreground guy's arm was hard to read at first, i'd consider slimming part of the design to make it less clunky. Also makes it look kinda clumsy to handle.
Amazing Action Ape
August 17th, 2006, 11:51 PM
Heres latest progress, on digital, and some new sketches! Digital is about 3 hours in, im workin slow, and trying lots of ideas out.
The SirGreenSock: Thanks man, I wish I could crank em out like you though! :D I think the vibrancy is part of my style, were I to colour my comics, It'd certainly have the same feel and look as my paintings. The gun thing, is actually a Powerfist type deal, but I saw how it could be confused as like a megaman style gun. Hopefully the new version is much more readable! :) Tried out a different colour on one of the suits, i think I like it, but only time can tell.
SirGreenSock
August 18th, 2006, 10:37 AM
Yeah the powerfist is a lot more obvious now! The colour on the suits is very similar to the rest of the enviro, so they dont stand out as much. This would work (and probably be more harmonious than the original red) if you pop more contrast on the lighting and surface of the suits to make em stand out.

August 19th, 2006, 01:24 PM
That compo is looking pretty good now. The only think I can nitpick is that the figures in the corners draw a little too much attention. Maybe move them towards the center, or make the less saturated with less contrast and make the center figure that strong red instead. Just nitpicks though, so grain of salt ;).

Aw man i missed so much! Guess the subscription fucked up again...
So much condensed apege, lookin nice. The Marko inspired piece is tight, hope you finish it dude!
I agree that the car lost its energy, I think its cause you yourself got lost in the edges. Sharpen up that bitch and throw some sleek chromy shine and it'll come back to ya!
The sp is solid, the likeness is definitely there, but youre still stuck in your usual colour schemes. Next time it starts happening again fuck it up with the hue/saturation tool and use whatever colours come out. :P
I wanna see more vaariety in your sketchbook. Seems like most of the work you do is either floatin heads or you being stuck in your comic world (which is fine, but you gotta expand to keep fresh, think Marko needing to move outta degenesis after so long). The cars are a breath of fresh air imo, looks that way in your markmaking too.

Cool life studies!
The last two are the most coherent imo, theyve got a great gesture, sense of movement and weight to them. The simplicity really helps in this regard.
The other (im assuming longer studies) arent as good really, theyre mostly done with short stubby strokes which freeze-frames the figure rather than give it flow. They also occasionally get some pretty spastic marks which im guessing are marking the edges of shadows and such, which dont really contribute to the figure at this stage. The best advice i can give you is something im also trying to work on, and that is making less marks in the longer studies, maybe even as few or fewer than you would in your short poses. Youre at a stage where simply recording the figure in front of you isnt enough anymore, youre good at that, so the logical next step would be thinking in your placement of the figure on the paper and your markmaking. In the longer poses try spending a bit more time looking at the figure, and figuring outthe most mark efficent way of putting it down. A few good, confident and well placed lines look better than many impulsive confident poorly placed lines.
Some illustrator advice for ya. :P

Haha even if you didnt tell me the name I'd have recognized Debbie's routine. See some wrinkly-abs guy in there too! :D
These life drawings are way better, read and flow real well. Only crit Id have is taht knowing Debbie's poses id say youre not taking them far enough. The twists are definitely there and well done but i think you coulve exaggerated the gesture of her arms and legs a bit more to show the tension of the pose (and the fact that she looks like shes gonna snap in half any second). Part of this is foot placement, half the poses have very flat foot placement (close to each others plane wise), the strongest ones are the ones in which you exaggerated this in the gesture, because that in itself helps the foreshortening in the legs believable and the pose interesting.

Beautiful work mr. Ape. I'm inclined to say that the last figure drawing batch
is stunning. The motion is well captured and the line is fluid. Great control.
Indeed Ape is mighty, got nothing much to add.

Holy hell, I think this is the most replies ive ever had after an update or two! Thanks for the comments guys! :)
Some quick 30 second poses and studies from today, as well as a 2 minute from the weekend.
Jeri: Yep, the model typically does an average of 15 - 30 30 second poses, 15 - 30 one minutes, 9 - 12 3 minutes, and 9 - 12 5 minute poses. Sometimes students request for more 3s or more 5s, or a 10 minute here and there. Yes, being a life model sure as hell aint easy! very physically and mentally demanding. Whod have thought? LOL Thanks :)
Sirgreensock: Thanks for the crits once again! I will certainly credit you in my life story later on down the road.
EvilDisco: Thanks man! LONG LIVE APE! and EVIL DISCOS!
Sirio_brozzi: Thanks man! im always working harder on telling stories with my images, and putting in as much life and motion as I can.
Amer_Nazri: It gets easier the more you draw, however coming up with something new will always be a challenge. Maybe, I just love to sketch, hard for me to finish pieces, thanks to severe ADD :P Im workin on that though.
Kaktuzlime: Thanks :)
Maxetormer: DUDE, thanks a grip :) Sweet blog man! hope this new stuff suffices!

One small nick pick, try doing more fully rendered

I really love the loose energetic quality to your lines. Your live figure studies are super awesome, I hope I can capture a figure with that much efficiency and elegance once I have a change to really get into model drawing.

You have some really great stuff here! I love the life in all your characters - you're an animation student, I assume?
Maybe you could try emphasizing the lighting on your sketches? The contours are beautiful, and it's a shame you don't take them further. Alas, I understand they are probably all de-stresser doodles. :3
It'd also be neat if you placed more of your figures in spaces. The environment a character is in can really lend to an already well-developed concept. Your sketchbook should be a window into a world you create, don't neglect any elements of that world! Then again, I'd do well to heed that advice myself.
Keep it up dude. Really, you have top notch stuff going on here. S-s-s-subscribed!

New Stuff! Bunch of studies, people sketches, layout ideas, etc etc. Im working on some animations of my own stuff, rather than school work, Ill post some line tests on youtube and then link them when i get around to it! :D
Woo! some replies! I love you guys and girls :)
Maxetormer: Id love to do more fully rendered pieces, but the majority of work i post is all school homework and stuff, mainly process sketches and ideas. This takes up the majority of my time, thus leaving me with little time to unwind. :S Then again thats just an excuse, so ill work harder on getting more finished work out.
Sirio_brozzi: Thanks dude! If I ever work on that sketch again id probably change a ton of stuff, because its a little uninspired looking to me now! LOL
Jtho: Thanks man, I bet you could, just observe the figure, keep in mind where all the tension and strengths of the pose lie, and draw draw draw!
Hahahaha, yeah its true, Ive seen a lot of those posts, post marko dvd!
Ryn: Correct! I love animaton, it gets funner and funner the more I do it! Although the same doesnt hold true for many of my peers. I do actually work on cast lighting my characters from time to time, but its mainly just to figure out planes and what not. My first year here, everything school related is always concentrating on LINE LINE LINE, values and lighting and what not are generally tackled in second year. Although I try to push my work more using line to show shadow and texture. Your right, I generally dont draw enough environments, let alone characters in an environment, however our newest painting assignment is exactly that! so expect to see something similar soon. :) Thanks :) good luck on your portfolio entries! you have strong stuff, so Im thinking youll get in no problem.
Wheeljack18: Thanks dude! will do :)
Lefran: Thank you! they are a TON of fun! :D hence why i do them so much. Ill work more on finishing concepts though! :)

That landscape is lookin good, albeit the colours are still not far enough outside your colour comfort zone for me to stop bugging ya! ;)
Ive also noticed that in a number of your face drawings, both from imagination and from life (and especially on guys) you tend to make the face stick out a lot (long jawline or neck connecting too far back) and end up also making the back of the head smaller/shorter to compensate. Dunno if its meant as a stylistic thing, but it stood out to me now with all these profile shots of your classmates and the heads on the second page of the second pic.

I really love your pallet in your color works, man! I think it works really well and has a great feel to it. As soon as I saw that desert landscape, I thought, "that would look bad ass if he took one of his 'darker' more realistic type drawings and made a comic book out of the combo." The gladiator is for a weekly theme thing some friends of mine are doing.
Second thing, is an idea for a painting i might do.
Maxetormer: Hahaha, thanks man :) which character are you referring to in the second image?
Sublimus: Yes, quite possibly because I find life drawing to be relaxing and fun at the same time, plus I generally learn a lot about anatomy and proportions by drawing the human figure over and over. Ahhh, well That character will be making an appearance in a comic book, as Im working on a story about him and another character that should hopefully be done by next september. So look forward to that. :)

LOVE the gladiator, nice design and pose. Not too fond of the leg and torso though, the torso seems kinda flat/shallow (ribcage wise) while the leg seems to be overdone so it doesnt make much sense in terms of connection, perspective or structure.
I like the idea for the painting, though i think you can do better with a more interesting angle/composition to it.

Sirgreensock: Yeah, that leg is wonky, couldnt figure out how to draw it, ended up just using ref that didnt match up. Also the painting idea was just an idea to get out of my head and onto the page, IF i do take it further i would definitely rework it to a more professional level :)

Huge improvement from what you showed me i think,, crisper, better colours, stronger values etc. Id fix up those ellipses sooner rather than later before you get into any serious kind of rendering around them. Otherwise im gonna wait and see where you take it.
I really like the top life drawing too, just wish you got some of that confident weight along the bottom too, makes weight distribution seem unbalanced. Maybe get the weight/mass distribution down more accurately before moving unto detailed areas (such as face). Cropping out the bottom half, its a stunning piece! :teeth:

Newest version of painting, time to stop for a bit to go back to concentrating on school work! :@ :S :P
Sirgreensock: I think the rear wheels finally fixed, I added some even DARKER blues in there, really solidifying the form and showing the curves and flows of the vehicles gorgeous shape now. Now I think i can finally concentrate on finishing up the piece. As for the lifedrawing crit, for a 5 minute pose, the face is mandatory. Mainly because everybody looks there first. It has the most detail, so the eyes are drawn to it naturally. However I do wish I placed some stronger lines on the bottom of the legs and feet, to show that weight placed much better. GAH, always something to work on. LOL
SirGreenSock
February 6th, 2007, 12:42 AM
Looking good, everything is much crisper, though it still looks like its just sitting on the road. The trail at the top is a good start, ive been thinking that messing around with the castshadow (blurring etc) might increase the effect of movement as well, as would random bits and particles flyin off the road.

Nothing to crit this update, only thing i can crit about the previous one is that the last drawing of the guy leanin forward couldve had a lot more emphasis on the spine and shoulders to convey the weight he was putting down. The lighter lines there kill the tension.

Your work is freaking! And your schoolwork is amazing too. Damn, I'm a graphic design student but we learn shit in school. They put somethings in front of us and say 'draw that!'. I know we draw it, I have drawn many things before but I Think they need to teach some basics before saying that. No structure was teached. Nothing! Thats a crap system. I don't like it. I'm working hard to get in another school. We haven't even drawn a nude figure! ( Don't know if its legal at schools but i think it has a big role at learning human anatomy. )

SirGreensock: Thanks dude! yes, youve just witnessed a classic animator trick! (post its make due for wonderful corrections)
eXceptioN: Well, technically im not really taught anything either. Its pretty much what you go through, except we get more specific assignments, with teachers there to critique you if you want it. I'm digging that last sp. Actually all of your last updates are top notch. The racecar painting is a little weak, though. I don't really know where to look. The saturation is kinda all over the place, there isn't a very concrete focal point. I think a lot of this stems from the car's colours and the sky's colours being so similar. Take this with a grain of salt, you're far above my skill level. :bashful:

Lots of stuff to still be fixed on the korgoth head rotation. Namely some tweaks in the rotation itself, as well as more anticipation on the cup, during drinking, slowing down the wipe of the face, and some more character into the lipsync (which isnt even registerable in this crappy quality) I also added the finished pink panther walk cycle we had to do.

Nice last set, only thing is the current angle of the shot, its canted(tilted), and that typically is used to convey something amiss or creepy..Which doesnt really fit the mood here too much. :O Hoping to see an animated version of this nonetheless, really liked the character design. :)

sketches from the zoo, and well. the sketchbook. :P Was hard to do studies of animals because of the distance away from them, my lack of knowledge on their anatomy and skeletal systems, as well as the fact that they just slept all day. :P
Maxetormer: Hahaha, your comments are awesome dude! My apprentice? well im still learning myself man! maybe in a few years eh? :) This is true my friend! all of those factors are very important in creating illustrations that are full of life! :) After all animation is all about the illusion of life, several of the things i learn while learning animation definitely helps me out illustratively.
Sirio_brozzi: I wasnt aware that tilting the camera plane like that conveyed that sense of mood, i was just tired of seeing straight on shots all the time. BUT! maybe hes drinking from a cup of... BLOOD! duhdundunnnn!! creepy? amiss? I THINK SO! mwahahahhaa :D

Finding things to crit you on is hard, just a heads up. Also I give you 5 starts, because you're just a 5 star kinda dude.
I quite like that gothy self portrait. It's got a nice mood about it. Only crit I can possibly think (and it may be invalid, take it with a grain of salt), it's a bit too cool, temperature wise. You kinda added a hot green to the eyes, which helps a lot, but I think you might be able to emphasize the darks with a few well-placed highlights on the golden parts of the mantle or hair. Speaking of the mantle, it's pretty flat. You've got that intense white light source, the collar of the mantle should probably be casting a shadow across the shoulder onto the back. And speaking of the bright white light source, why is it only seemingly effecting your face? The jacket and hair aren't catching any of it.
Those arm studies you have on your March 4th update are rendered nicely, but seem too short. Especially so on the upper arms, and even-more-especially so on the leftmost arm. Watch that shit.
I really love your stylized faces, they're beautiful and lively. Though I've noticed they usually have a pretty vacant and uncomplicated expression about them. I understand this is probably because you're doing them from life, but it may be beneficial to crack out a mirror and do some really extreme representations of anger, sadness, etc. May be particularly useful to you, as an animator, to capture that kind of intensity.
Those animal studies are beautiful. Great work, no crits there.
(You don't play WoW, do you..? I see a lot of WoW stuff.. :x)
Those panda caricature are pretty nice. They all look quite similar though, both in expression and shape. I don't know if that's what you were aiming for or not, animation is voodoo to me.
The gestures are very nice. Maybe try throwing in some rough approximations of planes in there? Unless you only need to know the contours as an animator.. again, voodoo. :P
More plz. I'll be keeping an eye on you. ;)

just a small update. 1 hour Watercolour portrait study done in class, layout assignment, and some mass effect sketches and studies.
Sway west: Thanks :) hope this watercolour study quenches your thirst for some colour work, once this semester is over all summer ill be doing colour studies (hopefully).
Bludhound: Thanks mate! Ive been getting burnt out lately, due to the heavy workload of school, and keeping a part time job, lookin forward to this summer where i can recharge by concentrating on personal projects.
Ryn: Sweet! thanks for the stars :D
Your crits on the portrait are spot on, The only problem Im having now is finding the willpower to continue working on it!
The arms are actually a wee bit short for a 6 head scale, which is what i was studying from rather than my usual 8 heads, but proportion is something I always have to watch, or else itll slip away from me. Case in point those arm studies. :P I do agree on needing more varied expressions, Ive fallen into that habit out of ease, and only push expressions for assignments. Ive started doing some sketches just recently using pushed expressions though, so Ill upload some later on. Thank you, the zoo was a fun time! :) and yes i do OCCASSIONALLY play WoW, however i doubt ill continue to play it as its become stale and boring IMO. The panda was actually me trying to work out a design for character design, hence the similarities. well, I cant draw fast enough in 30 seconds to show plane lines, well i could, if i wasnt so drained from working 24/7. :P
Thanks for awesome critique :)

well godammit Braden this recent shit is on a whole new level! Kickass!
Congrats on getting your life drawin' on display, really dug seein that one in person.
Characters, zoo sketches, thumbnails all look badass (looove that rhino). Youre really developing a nice style for yourself, starting to merge your comic and animator style real well.
Good job on the lifedrawings, theyre really improving lots. Occasionally still getting some choppiness in your strokes, but overall theyre all working real sweet, the gesture and weight distribution usually read real well. Will you be my tutor? <3 :bashful:
Loving the car character, hope to see it in colour!
The gouache (its gouache right? Im guessin cause the pigments a bit chalkier than if it was watercolour) is awesome too, first time ive seen that kinda work from you! Overall its got great character and its kept nice and simple, though i do wish you hit the colours a bit harder in places to give it a spark of life.

Heh, yeah, burnout is deadly.
Really good lines.
Really good energy.
You need to do a lot more color studies / rendered pieces. If you really work that the world's gonna be your oyster. Use your 'personal projects' as an excuse....hehe

The Mass Effect stuff is great man, i love how you can spend time playing video games and incorporate it into your work. I'm loving the last portrait, is that a special someone in your life? haha. Keep up the great work, I'll see you at some comic convention, or TCAF if you're down, later!

man, its hard to believe itll be 2 years of sketchbook mania in just 9 days.
Anyways heres 2 paintings from school, the first a master copy of a painting done by will wray (worked on samurai jack and other cartoons). The second a still life done in acrylics. Drawing problems aside i love the rendering on the flask. Ill try and get a huge update for the 2 year anni! Big thanks to everyone who leaves feedback in this thread! I do it all for you guys and gals :)
Sirgreensock: Thanks man! I hope some of my latest life drawings are wall worthy, as Ive changed up my life drawing style, and really enjoy this new direction ive been taking with them. Thanks again man, as for tutoring, I dont know right now, but I would say its a possibility! It all really depends on whether or not I can afford to put myself through second year without having to work part time. If thats the case then ill have time to tutor.
Ive been thinking of throwing colour onto the car! we shall see. hehe Actually it IS watercolour, i have this portable winsor and newton set that I bust out occassionally (planning on bringing it out more though, i love watercolours) Thanks man! i definitely plan on working hard even over the summer :)
Stalsby: Thanks man!
Bludhund: I agree on all accounts! I plan on hitting up colour studies HARD over the summer, we shall see how that turns out. :)
Taj: I dont really play videogames much anymore, not because i dont enjoy them, but because Ive been having more fun drawing then anything these days. Although i do play the odd game and watch the odd movie now and then that definitely keep me inspired. You already know ill be at the conventions this summer.
Maxetormer: Thanks man! Your attitude is always infectious! Keeps me fueled! thanks :D

Awesome stuff! I figured the previous paint was a watercolour once i saw the title, so im guessing the 'chalkiness' comes from the paper rather than the pigment.
I love the way you handle paint man, youre real good with getting the right amount of contrast in there.
Thanks for turning me to will wray, always love discovering new artists, and his work is phenomenal! Its interesting how for many animators their personal work is worlds apartfrom their commercial work.
I dig the first piece, whats it done with? Its kinda a blurry photo so its hard to fully crit, but comparing it to his original you did a great job! His version is more subtle in the colours and has more texture play, but youve nailed the values and the overall feel alright. Maybe the darks couldve been a tad warmer so they feel more like dark values than an infinite void.
I like the way you handled the acrylic, it feels more like gouache, which is the spectrum where i see acrylic to be good for. The bottle is strong, though the consistency of teh colours and values throughout is a bit much. A bit more subtlety in the handling wouldve helped make the back of the bottle and whats behind it read better. Youre right that the flask is the strongest, its nice and simple, and the reflections are solid for the most part. That midtone grey in the middle is bugging me though, itsa really strong shape so it stands out on its own quite a bit, toning it down with an inbetween value or something mightve helped? I dont know what the object in the back is, but its definitely the weakest, the simplification didnt quite work there, so it ends up confusing.

Latest update, clothed figure life drawing, 2 tens, 2 fives. Only third time ever doing clothed figure drawing, was wierd focusing on character and story, and cloth rather than anatomy.
SirGreenSock: Yeah I painted it in my cheap sketchbook, hence the chalky feel. Thanks man :) Will wray is amazing! I love showing people that guys work. Such a huge inspiration to me. My copy is done with gouache on watercolour paper, his was done in oils on masonite I believe. Was REALLY hard to do a copy like that, but well worth the effort. Thanks for the critique on the stilllife, the object in the back is actually a cloth curtain, but I had a really hard time trying to render that (mainly because i was having a hard time seeing it in my still life setup) which means i need to paint more cloth. :S :) Congrats on finishing first year illustration dude!

Kickass man, congrats on your progress this year, cant wait to see what you produce next semester!
The first life drawing is the strongest imo, the cloth and figure underneath both read and work together. The others all have great character, too, but arent quite as resolved technique-wise.
Are you staying here for the summer or headin back home?

Whew, been a while since I've stopped by CA for critiquing purposes.. gotta make up for that.
April 5th.
It looks a bit like you're overcoming that problem with not sticking to one style. At least in this instance. I can definitely take a quick glance at the first two pages and recognize them as something 'apeish'. ;)
The car drawing is just downright sexy. Contours on it are great, good sense of motion there. You nailed that one, mos' def'.
Watercolour is pretty damn nice. Little nitpicks (take lightly, I absolutely suck with watercolours) you could stand to be a little more bold with your brush strokes, use less of them in a more calculated manner. Doing the tried and true squinty-eye-test on that one, you could have conveyed the same information using a lot less brushstrokes. Though really, I guess using crappy paper could account for a lot of that pickiness. Just figured I'd throw it out there anyway, though.
First acrylic master copy looks really solid. Do you figure you learned a bit from it?
Second acrylic is pretty nice too. I really like how you conveyed the textures - shiny glass, metalic flask, etc - using some really limited brush strokes. As much as I -hate- the word, it does indeed look very 'painterly', in a good way. The vodka bottle's a bit wonky, as far as the perspective goes. The ellipse on the top of the bottle doesn't quite line up as it should. The can has a perspective problem as well, if you cut the can into slices, it wouldn't all line up the way it should in real life (if that makes sense?) Also, the direction of brush strokes on the soda can don't really aid the form at all.
The last 4 clothed figure drawings are gorgeous. Some of your best, I'd say. They're all very vibrant, you get a good sense of presence and character. I'd say not taking anatomy as a priority on these was a huge success. It seems you have a good enough grasp of anatomy to make that work, so more the power to you. The only crit on these is for the third one's face. It looks like you just stuck on her facial features; you didn't really 'sculpt' her face out of planes like you did with everything else. Still awesome for a 5 minute drawing, regardless.
Kickin' rad art as always. Looking forward to more updated. :3

Just a small update with a colour study of a character i might animate/illustrate.
Sorry for the lack of updates, but My only current access to a scanner was at school, and well its over for the summer! :S so expect few and far updates between now and septembaaaah.
Also, thanks for enjoying my work and picking me apart guys, I really appreciate it, you all help out SO Much.
Naomiful: Thanks! Glad you like what you see :)
Bludhund: I have been using more colour recently in my latest sketchbook, however you wont see that stuff until september, if at all. (most likely at that point id just post the latest stuff)
SirSockthatisGreenandWooly: Thanks dude! likewise! The first clothed figure was actually the last one i drew, i was finally getting the hang of it (hence why it looks the best :D), but now im soooo stoked to do more costume near the end of second year (so far away! :S) You already know im here over the summer, but ah. well. ladideedahhhhhhhdoooooodeeeee..
Ryn: Wow, always spot on in your observations and always always super helpful. Sweet! Thanks, and thank you! Im still nervous using watercolour, but I will do try to be more BOLD! :D Actually the first one is goauche, but yes I did learn a TON from it. Yeah, The still life does have quite a few perspective and drawing problems, but as the focus of the assignment was painting texture, I spent all my time on that. Looking back I wish I would have fixed the drawing errors, as it would have created a stronger piece and well, technically I still can, but eh,, its old news now. :P Thank you! I was actually up all night finishing our last animation that was due the day I did those life drawings, so Maybe i should life draw after pulling an all nighter more often! :D But yes, i do see what you mean about the face! :) thanks for the great critique!
Solon: Thanks! ah non, I was born and raised out west (alberta), where all the french i learned in school was never put to use, sadly. I do really really want, and well frankly, need to learn french though.

Those animal studies are absolutely fantastic! especially the crocodile and the monkeys... they had a real definite weight to them and in the crocodile you could see its little hind legs trying to propel itself along the floor
very nice sketches

Those life studies are freeeekin bootifull! Serious, you have this blatant animator fluidity combined with wickedness.
Say.. do you lay down real basic general/directional/proportional lines super quick like and then upgrade your charcoal and then lay down firm slightly slower more accuric lines??. Do you also look at the figure as 'a whole' so you are seeing all the proportions at once?
