Though I didn't like Bryan Singers take on X-men 1&2 (took too much character and story away from all of the supporting characters, though they were enjoyable films), I thought he was a perfect match for the Superman mythos.
On a sadder note Kate Bosworth looks bland as Lois Lane. http://movietab.com/archives/2005/first-look-kate-bosworth-as-lois-lane/ I really wish one day there will be a Superman movie that has an attractive Lois Lane. Hopefully like Margot Kidder, Kate's acting abilities will more than make up for her gigantic forehead. I believe Courtney Cox would have been a perfect Lois Lane but alas she is too old in comparison to Brandon.

Looks tall, which is good. 6'2 and a half...Reeve was 6'4...wish he was taller Christopher was a mountain of a man...hopefully they are putting lifts in his shoes.

His jaw looks extremely square.. and his lips are a lot fuller than Reeve's. which is not necessarly a bad thing but Superman's smirk/smile was, I beleive, very caracteristic.

Oh ye of little faith....Bryan Singer is directing, of The Usual Suspects, X-men 1&2 fame, you liked the movies didn't you?.....have faith. You do also realize the Great McG was once helming the Superman project, of Charlie's Angels 1&2 fame......now that movie would have sucked!....would have probably been worse than Batman and Robin.

I disagree with all the bitching and moaning about this costume. It's an homage to the original superman costume from back in the 50's adding a bit of modern flare with the 3D chest emblem and belt. There's no real spectacular changes to the costume, it still remains true to the original sylistically.

Jesus christ Undertow...how bout takin it down a notch, people are entitled to their opinions. You act as though we attacked you personally and not a costume from a movie. I am fully aware it is a homage to George reeves costume and a perfect one at that, it's still ugly. Superman returns is set in the modern world it's not unreasonable for fans to expect a modern costume as well.
Furthermore I doubt anyone here had a problem with the new Spider-man costume because that was a perfect translation of the comic spandex costume to the modern world.....you would have preferred the 70's tv version of the costume? Because that is the same correlation with the Superman costumes.

Yeah, that costume sucks. Then again, you can only do so much with bright blue and red. They tried to darken the red, but he just looks like a bigger dork.
And those boots are atrocious. Looks like he killed an elvis impersonator and stole his boots :P

since when is superman a 20 year old kid? I always liked the stories where he's a bit more mature and weathered. I wish frank miller would write everything for movies forever. I think re-creating the George Reeves look is a mistake, guy was a sweaty pig and a drunk and a lame superman, haha.
this costume sucks... but hopefully he wont be standing in that pose during the movie... he's a FEMBOT?

yes, it does look silly to modern standards, but it looks awesome comparatively to the george reeves costume! if he could see it he'd probably do a back flip and break his spine at how awesome and heroic it looks compared to his.
btw...undertow, er...mike right? I loved the SM costume when I first saw it, I only disliked the symbol on his back, looked like the venom spider, instead of the red circle type.

Ssenkrah Semaj, I couldn't agree more. In that design Wizard for the ultimate version of the DC world, i think they pushed the design to a more creative/modern solution while still remaining pretty loyal to its heritage. I wish the new costume did look more like that one, except maybe with the more traditional S on his chest (especially the yellow counterforms), that would be great.
Another thing I never really understood about superman in general was the fact about him being soo uber buff looking. To me, if he was an alien granted superhuman powers from the yellow sun of Earth, why does he really need to fit into the ideals of human masculinity? His muscles dont have anything to do with his super strength. I guess my point is that in the ultimate version you posted above, he's a lot leaner, and less barrel-chested than in other versions, but by no means does he have a weak looking stature.

I kinda like the costume myself. I agree the crest should be bigger, but otherwise I think it's better than most of those manips, and far, far better than that "Modern" version. But I'm going to wait to see it in motion before making any final judgements, that's the real test of any costume.

I think it all boils down to the fact that there isn't much you can do to make a guy in spandex tights look "right". Some good attempts have been the rubberized suits in the first batman. An alltogether redo of the xmen movie costumes.. and some of the plays on material with the Spidey-movies. This costume just doesn't seem to be trying anything new. Spandex is the devils garment, the further you get away from that the better. I think a subtlely textured material might have helped. And maybe a less girly guy. He reminds me of the guy from scrubs in a halloween costume.

I loved the Spider-man costume as soon as I saw it. I love the raised webbing pattern. Hell, I wasn't even all that shook up about the biological webshooters , especially after the second movie in which it was important to the plot for all of his powers to be biological. And besides, MJ calls him "Tiger" at the end of that one, so those guys can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned.

I just barely saw this new costume too, if you see the ultra-high res version, you can see they tried to do some funky texture/detail to the spandex a la spider-man. It still sucks. the neckline, the boots, the crest, everything is wrong. This looks too much like a deluxe underoos pajama set you buy at Wal-Mart. The DC comics movies need to get some new designers, I mean c'mon who doesn't remember that Catwoman catastrophe and the Batman nipple suit. For one thing, that crest has to be bigger, those two minute photo manips look much better with a large crest. The S is for Super, not subtle.

ah, way to take what I said to the extreme Ssenkrah. god I love the internet. I wasn't flipping out, just thought it was rediculous that a vast majority of the response was whining. There's not that much of a difference in translation between Superman and Spideys costumes. Let's do a comparison on how much different they are from their comic book versions.
The colors remained the same for both characters, they just dulled them down.
Textures were added to both of the fabrics, there was 3D additions to both costumes (webbing for spidey, the logo for supes).
The costume lines themselves changed a bit on both costumes and as in the comics where the artists take creative freedom with Spideys mask, they changed his eyes for the movie and supermans shorts were the change for this one.
I don't prefer the old costumes of any of the characters, I just feel that as long as the costume remains true to the character that there's no reason for people to immediately jump to the conclusion of "Oh the movie is going to suck".

I disagree on the spiderman costume they took the newest comic book version of the costume and updated it with new fabrics...thats all. Unlike the superman costume where they took an old design and updated it with the newest fabric. If they had done the same with the Spidey costume he would have had the smaller eyes as his old costume did.

I like this one better. I'm not a huge fan of the tiny briefs. Increasing the logo size does look a hell of allot better. The flat print logo doesn't really do it for me.

I think the reason the 3D emblem doesn't work is because it diminishes the definition on his body. It's sad how they try to 'cool'-ify costumes with leather, dark colors and shit.

How about this NO ONE WOULD HAVE BEEN HAPPY WITH ANY COSTUME DESIGN. Superman has been made, cooked, then reheated as capital left overs for the past DECADE. Combine that with an already established movie franchise history ='s a costume designer's worst nightmare.
There is no win win here boys and girls, they took a creative broadstroke of what the comic book artists have been rehashing since we were kids and did the best they could, the colors are going to look amazing in 35mm and will probably stand out quite well against the greyish tones of Metropolis as well as a very present sky.

I enjoy that the essence of Superman is in that costume, but I wish we had a better image to go with. The upward shot seems to be the popular movie super hero shot recently, but with this shot it really points at a lot of flaws..... and things we just don't want to stare at. My first reaction was "Whoa! Did they cast Max Fisher from Rushmore as Superman?"

Superman and Batman have gone through as many re-inventions as Madonna. As people are listening new Designs I notice no one mentioned the recent Michael Turner Superman outfit, the Stan Lee "Imagine" Superman costume or even a Jim Lee Superman re-design 10 eyars ago for Wizard magazine. I would have liked to see a more Roman design to Superman's outfit, but that's me just kicking around ideas. Was there ever a photo of Nick Cage's Superman outfit? I heard it was all black with a silver S on it, simular to the Superman death storyline.

Now after looking at that image my hope for this movie is somewhat replenished...Brandon Routh definetly has the look of Superman, more so I beleive than Tom Welling. I don't see how they could have done better with the casting than Christopher Reeve himself? I'm still weary though after that pic of the Superman costume hopefully that photographer is just an idiot and all of us nay sayers will be eating our words.

i cant wait to see it iam a big comic book dork , but the one movie i realy cant wait for is wonder woman , and if they try to turn it into the next catwoman i will just lose hope in comic book movies were the femail is the main person in the story , but hey they at lest got a person that iam ok with directing and its the guy that did some of the buffy eips back then so there might be hope for wonder women , but back to super man , i cant wait to see it when it comes out well becuaes i like supper man .

I attended the San Diego Comic Con last week and on Saturday Brian Singer flew in from Australia to show a short trailer. I've had some reservations about this new movie, especially when I saw those early release photos of the new suit. But I have to you, the trailer was AWESOME!!!!. it gave me chills. They're using the John Williams music and it fits very nicely with Superman 1. The new movie isn't a sequal really, it uses the first movie as a vague reference...as an old memory. There were certain parts of that short little trailer that were incredibly iconic. It was beautiful. I even got to meet Brian as he was walking around the convention floor afterwards and got a photo with him.
I can't wait to see this film next summer.

and i don't see what the big deal is with the new costume. it looks just like the comic to me, wtf. when they redesigned the x-men costumes for the movies, everyone bitched. now, this guy makes the cape a bit darker and everyones bitching cause it's not "modern"

I do, though i'm a bit confused as i dont see your point in using it in the manner that you have. Skipping sentences, atleast as far as i can remember, isn't a sign of dyslexia. Where you hoping to use it as a put down or what? Correct me if i'm mistaken and of your intention. Otherwise there is no need for that. Not everyone who spells incorrectly has Dyslexia, they've just adapted to a style that suits them, even if it gets frowned upon.
Hrm, in general the only thing bugging me about the costume is the size of the S. Moreso, i would have prefered an updated look to it, just my preference though. I would also like a more realistic storyline with a more down to earth supes instead of "Superman strong! Superman push planet, reverse time, make daimond from coal..all impossible made possible by superman!" Just because he's 'super'-man doesn't make him all powerful. He's strong, fast, and the such, but use it in terms that even he has limits, because he does. Atleast he should..bleh...

hey Joseph Kerr you are right i do belive that they should make super man not so supper . there are alot of people that like bat man better becuaes he is at lest human and could die but with supper man nothing can kill him but a green rock . lets hope they dont make super man to supper . and yes i do know thats to much to ask for becuaes alot of fans will get mad if they chang any thing , like here people got so mad when they made the street fighter comics becuaes they didnt follow the story that capcom made . it just shows how hard it is to make anything good for anyone becuaes no mater how good it is someone is not going to like it . so the best we can do is hope for the best .

It looks better. It pleases the eye. It represents the character aswell. Its his symbol, its part of who he is when you get into the character. Its also the reason you see it on all those shirts, show the superman symbol to a person and they'll more than likely know who it is. The smaller S just seems to dimish him. It isn't suppose to seperate him from other heroes as you so plainly look at it to, just..yea. I'm sorry if that doesn't help..just when i look at it i'm like "The S is small.." and he doesn't seem himself.
