Hi --
My daughter (17), a photographer, has been accepted to both RISD and University of Michigan's School of Art & Design. She is "freaking out" over which place to go. We know of RISD's reputation, but not much about Michigan, in terms of their art program. We live in the NY area. Can anyone tell us a little bit about UMich? Thanks...

My suggestion would be for the both of you guys to visit. In essence you're comparing apples & oranges- one's a big name art school and the other one is more known for being a huge school that offers many varied programs. Is one better than the other? Only you guys can decide that. But seriously check out what the facilities are like at each place. Ask to see where their alums are working (as far as UofM- specifically their photo alums. Folks like Gerald Ford don't necessarily count!) after graduation. Remember to choose a place that will not only stimulate growth but be a challenge too.

And from a person that lives kinda close to Ann Arbor, it is a great little thriving college town. Fun place to hang out and all sorts of things to do there on campus, but again... that's from my POV not as an academic person nor a student of UofM.

Both places are great for their own things. Your daughter really needs to see both and decide for herself. She has to attend there... not you, albeit you're probably footing the bill. And no need to "freak out" either- if she attends one and hates it, transfer out and find something she really likes. be proud of the fact that she can get into EITHER place.
