Have you read the extended review? Don't worry about spoilers, once you've read that you'll be glad that all possible desire to see the movie has been driven from your brain. It I saw some of that stuff on camera I'd never think of the books the same way again...

I'd take that review with a grain of salt. The impression I got from the short review (didn't read the long one because I haven't read the book yet and plan to see the movie) was just a pissy fanboy angry that they dared cut something from the book. Most of the buzz so far is fairly positive. From what I've been hearing this guy is a small minority.

This review is based on a substantially complete version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy shown to a small group of journalists in London on 31st March 2005, to which I was invited by Buena Vista International and Digital Outlook. The generosity of these companies in paying for my travel to this screening is gratefully acknowledged. The opinions expressed here are the personal critical opinions of myself, author and journalist MJ Simpson. This review is based on a single viewing of the film; if any factual details have been misremembered, I am happy to amend those portions of the text.
In addition to the long review, the guy gives a list of things in the book that are not in the movie, and the list is incredible. This is not just a film adaptation where in they had to nix a few things that fans took exception to, like The Lord of the Rings. This is a travesty. All of the best jokes from the book are either utterly gone or truncated beyond belief. The more detailed review he gives...well, let me assure you, this movie is nothing like the book.
Actually, this is one of the things that scares me...how many people will watch this movie that haven't read the books? They'll think Douglas Adams is crap.

so did they just invent john malkovich's character?
he's not in the book, so . . . . . . what?!
they just made up a new character and storyline?
the more i hear, the less excited i am about this movie.

Apparently it was one of Adams's early ideas for the thing, but one that got quickly and wisely canned.

Point one: Douglas Adams himself wrote the script for the movie before he died.
Point two: HGttG has always been several slightly different stories. The original radio show had extra scenes, lost scenes, and even scenes written differently from the original. So did the TV show.
To bitch over parts lost and parts gained in a universe that was originally intended to be continually adapted... well you get the idea.
I have heard its a fine film from many fans of Hitchhikers and that it carried the spirit of the books well.

I don't give a toss whether it's like the books or not, if it's good, good if not, fuck it.
Glad to see lots of British actors in it though, had to have really didn't it.

He did work on the movie, I know that much, but do you know for a fact that he completed the script? I mean, I'm just asking, as I honestly don't know.

Well heard on this end. Just make sure you read the "stuff-not-in" list on that site. But yeah, I guess it's all rather subjective.

From what I have read the radio play which was also different from the book is regarded as the best version so far. Does anyone remember the television series?

The Radio is better than the books in my opinion.
The TV series i foggily remember, was comedy, laughable special effects. But the cafe at the end of the universe was good.
