shiiiat daarken!

those are killer, i love whats going on with the most intricate of the sketches - the big quad-psycho damnation with the tiny-creepy head. the painting has cool tenticles, niiice.

i am sketching out a new composition for my monster. the monster has been mutated - less deer .. and a little more deer .. you'll see.

i think 'zane' already thought of the giant pet turtle.

all i can say is - work with defining the form more. work with its darks more and drop in details and some dramatic lighting. good luck!

i think the turtle idea is a litte tacky .. hey, a little honesty never hurt anyone .. right .. obilo ..

however! you can prove me very wrong, if i were to do this concept i would focus on the defensive aspect of the tortise. make this thing able to thwart any kind of attack, i picture flame throwers all around its head .. the tanks safely away from his head, somewhere not so dangerous, eh?

heh, top secret .. oh you.
-killing.nudge

i think you would be happy to hear i am done with pages of new sketches for my concept, i will get them scanned and posted, laaate!

Killink.Turtles - you have discovered my inspiration site... :D
(how did you find that "lovely" quote?)
I would like to prove you wrong but I lack.. the "Skill & technology".
I have to keep close to whatever animal I find since I have no anatomy background to do something else!
So... i can put some hair on the turtle and make some arrangements or... dunno - start again with an evil goat or something :D

i dont think you mean quote .. i dont know what it would be called.
i wanted to tease your turtle concept, i heard if you pick up some kind of turtle it will pee itself until it dies.
i was searching for turtle facts to find out if it were true and i went to a animal doctor site that had this funny little turtle picture .. i thought eh! good enough.

 stick with it! the turtle reminds me of a tank, maybe you can give it a gun barrel for a head, or on top of its shell .. or something.

yeah, oblio... stack the turtle with some freakin guns!

you know, like that one pokemon, just bigger and meaner :D
imagine two ultra-heavy gun constructions, one left, one right. so heavy that they press the turtle down, so that it has to creep close to the floor. that's the heavy artillery we need, oblio! :)

Now I work every night until saturday morning to finish my part for conceptart's army...

We will prevailchrrr...chrrr... :dead:

daarken: This creature on the second image at the top (with this 4 holes in his head or whatever) is great...maybe you can work it out?

oblio: Spikes for the turtles back and maybe wings...sounds weird, but it could be interesting.

ooops...i forgot i was sleeping

Hey everyone, I'm new here. I recently just posted a piece of my work in the 'Finally Finished' forum if you all didn't see it.
Anywayz, I really like the idea of this Thunderdome competition thing. I really have enjoyed viewing all the concepts so far and thought I might give it ago.
Here is the link to the monster I am drawing at the moment: http://bendavisart.xnapster.com/custom.html

I was inspired by the now famous Doom3 pic of that half-dog-monster-half-machine thingy eating that dead fat zombie in the bathroom. So, I decided to have a go at my own rendition. I really liked the creepy feel of that Doom 3 screenshot and wanted to draw my own monster in a pose like that for the Thunderdome comp, only thing is that the dead guy won't be lying flat on his back and as you can see from the pic, the monster is much different.
Background info for this monster: He eats humans for a living and is a little bit biochemical in appearance. His mouth is hideously deformed due to the amount of humans he eats. He has teeth similar to sharks teeth and like a shark if they happen to break off, they are replaced by new ones. Sometimes he doesn't kill the humans and devours them alive. The large gape in his back is where all the resourced human gibs and parts are and some humans that aren't fully digested can be seen poking out of his grisly back. Anywayz, thats enough chatter from me now. Once the pic is done you'll see what I mean.
Anywayz, I'd just thought I'd post this WIP since everyone esle is doing it and I am really looking forward to seeing the final entries for this compeition.
C&C are appreciated.

damn batteram, that is one ugly looking mofo. its as little hard to crit at the moment cause its so unfinished, but maybe you should do a more detailed sketch before start painting the thing in too much detail? meh, maybe not

Batteram
September 26th, 2002, 05:58 PM
hey nil, thanks for saying that my monster so far is, uh, ugly :)
I guess everyone has their own style and technique when it comes to drawing, painting, etc, and unlike most people i like to add detail by detail to one part at a time. Of course art teachers wouldn't advise you to do that but they can get stuffed. I mean, as long as you complete the final product, thats what matters, right?
Anywayz, I'll be working on this guy a little more and maybe post another WIP so you can see what he is meant to look like :)

exo: haha, that is my feeble attempt at a justin sketchbook page. i can only find the stupid grey tones of the tria ink refills...so i used one of those and just a brown of the higgins ink.

here is another character i sketched out today. he is an assassin that uses a very special weapon called a neuroknife. when the victim is stabbed with the neuroknife, messages are sent to the victims brain telling them that they have been killed, regardless to the location or severity of the stab wound. the one on the left i had a gun arm, but i decided to just drop the gun and give him two knifes instead. i also changed his costume to rags and leather so that he would be more agile and more silent...as opposed to all the loud, restricting metal.

Damned....i am flying in a few hours into holidays...i will send my entries in about 2-3 hours to General Manley...2 monsters, i already have another 3rd one, but just the linework...it was my first monster, and a real killing machine, but no time means no monster...

However my 2 monsters will support conceptart-beasts...

But i think i will render the other monster, when i am back and post it...

sweet,

heres my monster, its also posted in the forum for unfinished stuff, hope no one minds.

Its a mutant bat, originally it was gonna be a kamikaze hummingbird who needs to be constantly drinking nectar from the tube on his back. I changed it to a bat because i thought it would fit better in the thunderdome but kept the nectar thing. Its kind of a scout, using enhanced vision and echo-location to send information back to home base but instead of using a radio or something it uses it voice which wouldn't be intercepted by the enemy.

Hey Usagi, did you know that Kamikaze bats were almost used as REAL weapons of war in world war 2? Allied scientists seriously contemplated dropping thousands of bats from bombers with the idea that they would immediately roost under the eaves of the roofs of the buildings below. There, the explosive capsules which they were carrying would ignite and start a giant city-wide inferno. The plan fell through during testing, though. They had a batch of their kamikaze bats in a truck at an air field waiting to be loaded onto a bomber to be tested on some dummy targets, when they escaped. They burned down a couple hangers and even a high-ranking officer's car, if I remember right...

Theres some useless trivia for ya.

McNallyism: honestly? they tried some crazy stuff then. i heard that gthe first attempt at guided missiles were piloted by pigeons inside the missile trained to peck at a set of contols,

not sure if thats true though

anyways i could really use someones opinion on the monster design, (hint, hint)

relinquish
September 30th, 2002, 01:09 PM
usagi, love the bat - his goggles have a sort of 1980's shades look to them, very cool.

not sure about his feet though: are they bat feet, or eagle talons or dinosaur feet? not that they look wrong, just sorta funny when you consider what bat's feet are really like...
can't wait to see it painted

usagi yojimbo
September 30th, 2002, 01:15 PM
i kinda agree with the you about the feet, the problem is that finding reference photos of bats is impossible, they're always blurry as hell, and either tons of them flying or tons of hanging in a cave wrapped up in their wings

in short i have no idea what bat feet look like

McNallyism
October 1st, 2002, 05:47 PM
Usagi, sorry for not criting your work right away. I think the basic idea is sound, although I think you could go further with mixing in the bat anatomy. I would suggest getting a book on bats from the library, they are some really other-worldly creatures. I really think you should sonsider changing the nose into more of a bat-nose. Depending on the species, bat noses can look pretty interesting, and I think it would be a good source of contrast to have an ugly ol' up-turned bat-nose poking out from under that futuristic helmet. Also, research the wings more. Right now, it appears that the wings are too small to support the weight of the rest of the body, especially with that huge tank-thingy hanging off his back. If you make them more akin to those of a pteradactyl rather than a bat, he will be able to use his hands in combat. Basically my suggestion to you right now is research, research, research. Get anatomical reference for the feet as well. Even if you feel you have a firm grasp on the character's anatomical structure, researching will help you find details that you never would have thought of and will make your concept seem that much more believable.

I'm sorry for not giving critiques on your guy. I get pissed too, so plz accept my apologies.

I like it. 'twould be cool to show a number of these guys in your final comp. A swarm would be viscous. I agree with Mac, about the foot, it is a bit too big or something. Watch the foreshortening on that right leg too.

thats cool mcotie, like i said i do it to

yeah, i was thinking of there being a fleet of them but i didnt know if i would be able to ( i though there might be something against that in the rules, maybe unfair somehow) ill definitely be doing it now

i think im gonna add a pair of machine guns, one on each hip maybe not, you're use of the word viscious has me thinking of some sort of blades bolted to his arms/wings or something, a melee weapon at least

i guess if there isn't happening any wonder soon, i'm out.

after finishing the backgrounds for the first attempt, i saw it was horrible and dumped it. the second, third and forth attempt stopped before being born. all the underlying paintings and sketches didn't have any life, no shapes did form, no anything.

So to get the assignment done by the 15th, I drank like 3 huge cups of coffee at 2am this morning so I could pull an "allnighter" to finish my piece and then would go to work all day! Then I read that the deadline is moved to the 30th! So now what do I do that I'm WIRED!!! I guess I'm just going to work on it all night anyway because going to sleep right now would be stupid. I am glad about the extension though. I'll be able to really get what I wanted done. Not just the "rushed because I procrastinated for 15 days". I worked my but off the first 2 weeks then burnt out and didn't touch my piece for at least 2 weeks. This last week I started working on it again. Not enough time to color this monstrosity. Especially since I suck at coming up with cool color schemes. I spent 2 days trying to get a color scheme and ended up with poop. Lucky for me, tonight I had a breakthrough and the color is looking good (for my skill level). I have a feeling there are going to be some really amazing stuff(like there already isn't). :D
