This is an open Thread for people to post work relating to the topic.
I started this off with a finished concept of a dragon that was a collaboration between "Sammy" Sammy Hall & I.
I figured it would be cool to see some new takes on "Dragons" since the topic has been brushed upon a few thousand times by almost every artist. So lets keep things as original as you can. Try to be creative and remember that the term dragon can lend itself to a broad variety of species of dragons.
Ice, Wind, fire, earth, rock, land, sea, four legs, no legs, 2 legs, 4 wings, large, small etc..
Try to inspire others with something ORIGINAL

RULES FOR THIS THREAD:
1* - Please do not post existing artwork, work that you have posted already or work that you have had from your golden ages. This thread is meant for NEW work to be inspired by this thread. If I catch you posting something I recognize from having seen the work already, I will remove your art :dur:
2* CHANGED RULE- sketches are acceptable
3* Collaborations are acceptable
4*- Perhaps post some insight to your design and the type of dragon it is.

No dragons to post (at least yet) but I just thought I'd say "Damn!" That's some solid stuff! As Sammy said, nice job painting, and I really like the sketch of the dragon that has four wings rather then the normal two.

wtf are you doing Hillart?
anyways..

nice dragons/drawings, Mike. i dig the red scales.. they're sexy. the only thing i need to crit on is the image of the dragon on both hind legs. the pose looks sort of static and awkward for the dragon. try to think of what he's doing on 2 legs... is he backing away from an attacker? try to push that pose a little more. keep up the good work! ;)

nice idea for the thread...

on the first one I really dig the metal gear on the dragon but the tail /is that a tail?/ looks a bit too stiff I think... goes in too straight line...

more dragons ppl...

no dragons from me but i do have this to offer-

i used to totally love playing these games cos they were so different from the same old boring stuff -

You have to plow around in the directories a bit to dig out all the good stuff but its well worth it i think.

Best dragons -
TIA-MAT from dungeons and dragons show (cos it wailed on VENGER everytime)
EBORSISK from willow (points for originality)
OMEGON from flight of dragons - best voice

good thread idea - nice stuff so far ........... hope it 'takes off'

hey thanks mutton, i got a few more that i'l scan up.
i'l just gotto get them abit more refined, i have a tendency to make my drawings too loose and too open to different interpretations, i know what i'm looking at when i see it, but other people sometimes have a hard time making out the shapes in the detail.

so i'l fix up a few more .. its all practice.

nice stuff on this site, very very inspiring!
Often when I don't know what to draw....I always find myself drawing dragons.
This is always possible!

This one was finished yesterday:

That one is little bit older (2 month):

http://www.cybersign.de/cybersign_prod_inhalt/WIP/ILLUS3/Dragon_Top_Woodcut_800.jpg

and I have posted some dragons in my mails a little bit ago: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=31874

Great thread!

OK- people PLEASE READ THE RULES

I appreciate the enthusiasm, but i stated that I would like to see NEW work not work from your golden ages- meaning work you did a while ago, or work that you have posted already.
that goes for Muttonhead, since you said you posted the design already
that also goes for you ATAHUALPA - I dont want people posting old work. This is for new work created after seeing this thread- specifically for this thread.

MY REASONS: i dont want this thread to be a dumping ground for anyone who comes acrossed it. I dont want someone who has 10 dragons pieces to just drop thier work here, or to see 50 drawings and dragons that I have seen before.

I had forgotten about Flight of Dragons! I used to watch that movie all the time. I like how Sammy put the picture of the referenced skull. I should have thought of something like that!

I am definitely inspired to do some work. I have tomorrow off and I've been itching to do some watercolour painting so I'll see if I can't hit two drawings with one page, if you take my meaning.

Some things to keep in Mind- start saying to yourself

What makes up a dragon? The horns? The long neck? The teeth? wings, scales, etc..
Well, what can be changed and what can you leave, how far can you stretch the rules but still get the idea across that its in the family of dragons? I mean for example

CATS- the family of felines is over like 40 wild cats

Leopard, Cheetah, Bob Cat, Linx, Tiger, Panther, House cats, Lions, Ocelot. All Animals have a large range of characteristics within thier own species family. Look toward animals for references in the differences.

Being as Dragons are fictional, You can break the rules even more so, but still keep in mind what makes a dragon a dragon- certain distinct features. You could have like 4,000 species of dragons and each one could be unique and distinctly original. I mean, Water dragons alone there are soooo many possibilties..Although Muttonhead posted a piece that was posted once before, he has the right idea- The dragon is unique and very original but I still look at it as being related to the dragon family.

Try to out do the next guy - with Originality.

ecsdesign Love the look and the colors - great job!

Mike, I can't tell you how refreshing it is to hear someone taking the Naturalist approach to designing creatures. I know you do a lot of zoological studies, and it *really* shows in your work.

If you don't mind, I'd like to ad to your notes on designing dragons with a few thoughts of my own:

In designing a dragon, or any critter, really, I first try to get as good an understanding of the animal as possible. If I'm doing real a creature, this means a lot of studies before I draw the animal. In the case of a fictional creature, I spend considerable time understanding it's physiology, how it moves, what sits where inside it, what sits where outside, and why it may have something seemingly useless.

Predaters tend to be pretty well streamlined as a whole, without much in the line of vestigal appendeges or plumage. A male lion immediately comes to mind to contradict this statement because of their mane, but they don't do the hunting. The females of the pride do.

Omnivores are a little more versitile. Here I'm thinking of certain bird species that do go in for the plumage and decoration, but are also predominately insectivores.

Herbavores are all kinds of decked out with body piercings, tattoos and -- oh, damn. sorry. Anyway, Hebavores, because they don't have to worry about *not* being seen, or being stealthy, tend to have more things like horns, bright plumage, or vestigle appendages (think of, say a Turkey, with that funky head flesh action (the waddle)). If something *is* present, it's there for a reason. It may not have a function *now*, but it did at some time in the species past.

How does this apply to designing dragons? I'll let y'all ponder that for a while  :teeth:

Cheers,
~Shane

*bingo*

Scavangers are also fun to toy arround with --- usually their weight is shifted more towards their front, to allow for much more power/size to their jaws (for chrushing bone) --- they can have such large and functional jaws, that the bones are often scarred from how large their muscles can get (this scarring is the first thing paleontoligist look for when settling on a creature being a scavenger)

The Tyranosaurus is a great example too --- he's given up all weight and size in his forarms, just so his jaws could be more massive --- one of the most succesful scavengers ever.

*more biology rants from everyone please!*

Mike and Sammy joining forces. That's a scary thought. Awesome stuff. Your styles really complement each other well. Sammy's got this energetic and robust style to his characters and Mike's got that similarly energetic brush work.

Sammy: I like your solo piece too. Design-wise it's great how it evokes that whole killer-whale feel. I don't think I'm a fan of the blurry grain down at the bottom though. For me it detract from the focus.

I’ll be sure to join in this weekend since Davi stood me up for my challenge.

Exo@: Thanks for the comments, Sammy is one talented mo fo - no doubt

Gilead@- Nice to see a humorous approach- I thought the badunkadunk dragon breed died out in the 70's :P Thanks for joining in

ecsdesign@- Nice paint job, he definately has a feel of an ancient wise dragon, try to push the design though toward something unique like I suggested in my last post. When I say unique, I mean something other than your typical scaled 2 winged dragon that breathes fire like we all know from our child hood. Thanks for participating

The Brand@- Thanks for posting, nice pen work, the scales look great. The head is interesting how his face sort of becomes Bone, in the nose region.

Willpaxton@- Check a couple of my suggestions I posted in my last post, and my first post about originality. not a bad sketch ;)

Negrotuerto@- Great stuff, nice texture/skin wrinkles and design. Thanks for taking the time to create a new piece of work.

Sammy@- Your creatures have come a long way, very cool. I love this little guy, I wanna take him home and let him swim in the stream in the backyard.

I have a couple sketches here, not sure if I'll have time to color them. I tend to wanna go overboard with colors sometimes.
This is Bruce, he lives with me at Home. I usually have to chain him up to the tree because some of the neighborhood dogs have gone missing and I'm stuck trying to figure out which dirt mound thier burried under. He's your average Dorian Drake - A breed that is built for digging and are very playful, they make loyal companions for all ages.
http://pratt.edu/~mcorrier/sketch/dragonpet.jpg
About the size of your average cat or dog, depending on the sex. This dragon is ground based and equppied with a head full of sharp horns. In defense this breed will usually charge with a thrusting motion toward its enemy.

so I felt drawing a quick one where it was a little closer to being plausible.

Shade Dragon:

http://www.summerdragoness.com/images/sketchbook/shade_dragon.jpg

An astral creature which flows from plane to plane. They come into this existing plane on the darkest nights and creep from shadow to shadow, silently stalking their victims. The Shade dragon feeds off of fear of all creatures, and only the fear can be drawn from the bodies with their moon white eyes. They speak telepathically though trigger emotions causing the victim to fear it's surroundings and take flight, and the chase is what the Shade dragon loves most. The more fear, the more quickly it can satiate it's hunger. Once the victims fear is drained, they pass out cold for days and the Shade dragon returns to it's plane upon the coming of dawn.

Awesome everyone! --- Mike, this thread is great - happy to see it grow into page2.

Red_Rook, very tight rendering and detail man : )

--- I decided to go ahead and do a full-blown pice for 'page2' ---- I'm obsessed with the notion of docile 'aqua-dragons' ... designing from paint is a much different process than from linework, it's harder to land solid anatomy - so I'd still like to do some lineworks of these guys to really land the design.
Got some illustration help from my girl, to aid in the composition --- started coloring from a black'n'white digi-thumbnail --- threw a few matte-paint style phototextures here and there, and just had some fun ... back to more dragons, YAY!

Inspiring stuff guys, especially Mike and Sammy. Mike, your dog-like dragons are properly exotic looking but imminently loveable looking pets, and Sammy your latest aqua-dragons are really shaping up very nicely.

I need more time with my creature features, as well as Painter, so this was a fun chance to try some things out. Might refine/color later, we'll see..

The idea behind this dragon is along the lines that Mike has been exploring--they're a horse-like flightless dragon that are often used as a mount for wartime. Maybe I'll add a saddle and rider...

Ahkahna- love the line quality and pose

Sammy@- so much love BRO- I can see BIG improvements on your paint job, I think that Midway games has rubbed off on ya. ;) great dragons

Kazz@ very cool- great design, would have liked to see this one finished.

Gauss- the anatomy is really nicely done, I think adding the saddle would be neat and give it an added interest to the viewers eyes, the pose could have been more interesting since its just a static profile, but I realize its just a concept.

Justiartist@- WELCOME TO CA.ORG, great body of work almost loooks like cg models on some of them. I appreciate your post and wanting to contribute to ca.org ;)

Very cool thread! And more than a little humbling. I regret that it's just a sketch at this stage. In time I may come back to it some more. But any chance to do up a dragon is a good one. My reasoning for this one is simple. While the TSRing of dragons certainly opened up a lot of opportunity for some very cool creativity over the years, I think that first and foremost, a dragon was thought of as a vile and evil creature found burrowing in the depths of the Earth. More often called a Wurm, or Wyrm, with visions of a hell filled with crawling beasts and demons. With an occasional visit on the surface to terrorize a sleepy little hamlet somewhere and spawning evil legends. At least it seems that way to me. While I've always enjoyed doing more graceful and expressive dragons in tha past, it's this darker more sinister aspect of them that I would like to explore more in the future. Almost Cthulhuesque in approach. But not Giger. Please, no more Giger :D

Woo, this thread sure took off. Great stuff.
Hurricane, thanks, I'm afraid to put anything on my feet now, fearing that that monster might be sleeping in it. Great sense of depth. No crits really, one question though: how did you make the texture on the floor tiles?
Dirty, cool stuff m8, love the mood and usage of all the diff colours. Crit: the lower back, tail and lower legs are rendered in exact the same way, making them a bit bland.
Abberant, it is a bit plain, but the atmosphere is working for me. Maybe you could spice it up by placing some strong highlights on em reflecting a fire. That would be bring some sharper colours into the picture, stiring it up. Don't overdo it and lose the moody atmosphere though. Just the first thing that popped up in my head.

That's it for first impressions, I gotto scoot, gonna try and make myself a dragon laters, you're all on fire!

Shit sammy, forget the dragons, I want to see more water and rocks.

LOL That's what I thought too. Nonetheless, I like the subletly of the dragons. They look like they were made for that environment.

As for myself, I live on a resort with no access to a scanner and limited access to computer with FTP prog. This is my original dragon:

The face is similar in structure to a Salamander with the large eyes and lips. Five spines exit the back of the head with webbing between each spine. Underneath this webbing is a mass of silver-grey coils.
The wings begin at the shoulders and are attached to the main spine of the dragon, all the way down to the tip of the tail. They are made of a thin membrane which is thicker near the edges. This is because the dragon grabs onto its wings and creates a parachute. The flight actually comes from its ability to manipulate electrical fields. They way I picture it is like Spiderman, only there are no buildings and no webbings, just great big flashes of lightning.
The dragon can either stand upright or on all fours where it's rear legs would be covered by the drapery-like wings.
I had the idea of making their body temperature be really cold for greater conductivity with the result of moisture turning to ice on their skin but I couldn't think of a way to depict this. Any ideas?

I wish I could get the pictures I've drawn up to you guys.

Great work everyone, I've seen alot of cool ideas and pictures in this thread.

i did an edit but only to the top of the head -
i was thinkin of doing a new one crossed with a hammer head shark - but id have to start from scratch or id end up with the aliens from PITCH BLACK :-)

i like things with iregular heads - like evolutionary aberations or dead ends.............

http://img259.echo.cx/img259/461/dragonsea26ld.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)

might do a smooth transparent green and yellow head too where you can see the skull - like deap sea creatures.

Dirty C

but yeah - it turned out lookin likeEVA unit one.

Cool - good on you for not getting sensitive about it either - 90% of the tiem on the Internet, that would have turned into a flame war.

i like things with iregular heads - like evolutionary aberations or dead ends.............

Yeah, I totally agree with this kind of thinking. I remember seeing someone - can't remember who, but I think it was someone pretty good - who had a big bitch about people putting design features into creatures that serve no purpose. One of the primary engines of selection is sexual, which follows virtually no rules at all, and in reality, Natural Selection acts much more strongly and rapidly against disadvantageous things. Features which aren't actively selected *against* can persist in the collective gene pool for billions of years. If you don't believe me, go look at the cave fish with the giant eyes.

So yeah, odd things which appear to serve no purpose are NOT a flaw of design. And if you think so, you should go make chairs and leave the creatures to someone else :P

Wow, great dragons everyone! DAMN, this thread has some energy :yayca:

Thanx for the posative replies everyone : )
--- I had a fun time on those water dragons, it's the first real paint I've tackled since I've been out of school and in the work-force :^^;:

Oregano: Bring it on!! Pterasaur dragons rock the house - nice one
hurricane: That's just plain friggen' awesome man!
dirty: Nice rendering and culture on that one, wow.
max-cant: PanzerDragoon holds a place in my heart as well -- got a copy of every damn one of 'em!

I urge everyone here to go check out Douglas Henderson's work -- He's arguably the greatest paleo-artist ever:
http://gallery.in-tch.com/~earthhistory/
I find his works to be very honest and not exadurated -- He Illustrates prehistoric animals with the apathy and expresionless natures they would've had -- no needless chirping, or mouths open in rage -- his work is all about the subtlety :P We can learn a lot from subtlety.

I spent the last few days on this one, noodling it in my free time -- probobly about 7 hours total.
I decided to go with more Pterasaur-type dragons -- Pterasaurs are so damn amazing... and they aren't actually dinosaurs at all, but their own breed and cold-blooded -- lots of conflicting and interesting debates on these creatures if you go looking.
(I uploaded my ref/style-guide I used, as well as a small process from thumbnail to paint --- Thanx to Mike and Oracrest for helpin' me on this one)

Sammy-

Damn, what an awesome composition!

The only thing that I think needs attention is the lower dragon... it could be just me but I think he needs to be pushed back even more... maybe throw in some more contrast/ saturated color on the top dragons tail to pop that out... that might solve it. I say this because when I first looked at the picture the two dragons blended together initially and it confused my eye a little bit.

But my god, what an incredibly challenging shot, very very cool... tons of action and motion. You're brave for trying such a foreshortened and angled perspective with objects that don't even really exist... amazing :)

PS- They totally kick my dragon's ass ;)

Thanks to CartoonFox for hosting the images for me- I appreciate it dude.

OK- Some new sketches/concepts of unique dragon species, I tend to like the flightless dragons more

First off Is A mountain goat inspired breed that has some BIG ASS horns, these large creatures can be found roaming high altitudes balancing along rocky cliff sides with the greatest of ease. I have included some size references.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v19/cartoonfox/hosting/mountain.jpg
This species is a smaller breed that resembles your modern bird/owl hawk.. although thier fisty little bastards hence thier name "bastirds" They like to cause trouble and rip things apart with thier talons.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v19/cartoonfox/hosting/bastird.jpg
This last breed, I had a lot of fun with the pose, and on this one I used a group of reference images of various exotic animals and then added my own sense of design to give him that dragon quality. I have incorporated Hippos, Wildabeast- sp? and Kangaroos, I depicted him in a lazy yawning pose laying down on his side.

so, one more :)

Legend tells of a ruthless regent who reigned the dense woodlands of Farastas-Im. Through the ages the people where plagued by lurking predators from the dark, but as long as the king was not affected he let them be.
One day as the king dined with his newest conquest; the fair madame Tella in the royal garden, a beast so vile and awesome even the guard dogs lost their bark came and left but a speck of blood in the lady's stead. The king was outraged and demanded that the beast was to pay his debt for robbing the king of a night of pleasure. Knights and mercenaries from all corners joined up in the search for that one beast. Was it ever found? - No one knows, but many a beasts where to pay the same debt before the kings matter was forgotten...

As the time passed and almost all the Urduls were killed, the king kept the last ones in his castle as guard dogs. And now the Urduls serves each new king, forever paying their debt back.

Dang, so many awesome dragons.

I love classic dragons, I really do, but for me, I think the word dragon is up for so much interpretation. I love the flightless dragons, so I wanted to do a take on a land dragon, lithe and fast. I used a lot of cheetah, dog, and horse reference. I wanted it to be a scout animal for war, silent, super fast, but not exactly a pushover if it needed to fight. I also like the idea of giving a dragon different topical and textural surfaces. In this case, fur instead of scales.

http://www.poopinmymouth.com/2d/beastconcept.jpg Excuse my rough traditional skills, I'm still pushing to improve in that area.

But being a 3d artist, I wanted to bring it to life in three dimensions, and really give it some love.
http://www.poopinmymouth.com/3d/dragon_pose.jpg
http://www.poopinmymouth.com/3d/dragon_crouch.jpg

I really want to animate this someday, or have someone else animate it, because I think he would make some really beatiful movements.

About the knight I was just curious, is it the proportions of the knight that are off or the fact that he's a lot smaller to the Dragon? I meant to make him quite a bit smaller to portray a very large beast. I appreciate your input and again sorry if I posted the wrong stuff.

britt, awesomeness --- dragons party too hard sometimes.
This thread is goin awesome -- everyones work is kicking ass, and I'm glad to see we've gotten a good share of very liberal and creative dragon designs.

Here's a giant Lobster dragon, based on a friends concept --- we tossed some ideas around, and came with an idea based on a recent lobster dragon sketch of his.

Oracrustacea - Homaridae Manchesteria:
A giant 'aggressive' filter feeder and ancestor of the common edible lobster. The Manchesteria pulsates backwards through the ocean in the tradition of a common lobster's tail-sprint, filter feeding on tiny plankton gathered in its tail.

His tail has adapted cilia that, when the membrane is opened, can filter out small plankton and food particles from the ocean surface. The cilia then 'snowball' the plankton under the belly of the giant lobster towards his mouth for feeding.

Manchesteria is known as an 'aggressive' filter feeder because of his violent nature. Any organism that blocks his instinctual feeding path is quickly torn apart by massive pinchers and left in his wake. The local opportunist sharks that appear to feed on the remains is usually the sign of a fresh kill.

http://www.modelforge.com/sammy/MattLobsterEtheriumWEB.jpg

Here's some development thumbnails that I had Oracrest crit me on 'till we got the most idea concept ... all the thumbnails show the lobster traveling backwards to the left, with his head facing the right.

http://www.modelforge.com/sammy/mattlobsterthumbswebcompilation2.jpg

Here's Oracrests origional image, and my reference sheet --- I composed a texture for the lobster from like 5 of these images:

Great pen rendering! You should look through some research/reference about mammals vs. reptiles ---- There has actually been a transitional period in the early triassic where some reptiles were taking on mammalion characteristics.

check out the cynodonts ( a little scientific tree (http://www.geology.ucdavis.edu/~cowen/HistoryofLife/cynodonts.gif) ) --- they're some of the most recognized for when some reptiles started to take on mammalian characteristics --- cool little dudes, how they're designed.

Wow, amazing find Matt!

bwkeough, vigostar, Daggermoon, Inkarnation:
Thanx guys, I love being able to show my reference and process --- tha' thumbnailing/referencing part the most fun :yayca: --- As designers sometimes we have to be honest with ourselves when we are not knowledgeable of the concepts we are creating and go out and do the research/referencing .... especially in the case you are designing based on someone's interests other than your own, you need to know as much as they do on the subject.
This is what separates an artist that creates an image from a designer that creates a concept --- a designer has to get inside the head of his audience, and figure out what they would love to experience.

Check this guy out: the megamouth shark (http://rps.uvi.edu/VIMAS/Megamouth.jpg) I think this species of shark has only surfaced twice for documentation, once in the 70's and once in the 90's .... now if that's not a freakin' dragon, I donno what is :blahblah:

Yes dragons!! Awesome ideas awesome works everyone :yayca:

Order: Diuku
Family; Meropidae
Genus Species: Mercos aosus:

The Little Bee-eater, characterized by richly colored plumage, slender body, usually elongated tail and central tail feathers. Reptilian scales located beneath the downy plumage are still apparent.

This Genius of Diuku has kept their grasping talons for use during fledgling flight. In the learning process the aosus will climb out to the farthest branch where it may spread it's wings. Mature females make use of these appendages during nesting.

Predominantly praying on small bugs and reptiles this species thrives, there have been estimated to be between 40-60 million Mercos aosus. They are solitary, drawn together only to mate. Iridescent scales, golden plumage and red markings around the eye signify a healthy male mate. The female lacks the red eye markings and golden plumage however she retains the iridescence of her scales... :blahblah:

Here's a dragon I did earlier. I'm kinda digging the direction this one is going. I may put more time into finishing this one later just feels like it could use something more.

sorry, no dragon here - I just had to say I LOVE that cow dragon. <3 <3 <3 bkmini, you have a new fan.

Nothing's perfect but this comes really close. I've been looking at it for quite some time and I had a hard time finding anything to crit about it. firstly, the proportions are beautiful. It just works. And on top of that, you've got some awesome colours, patterning, scaling, and lighting! Well done!

but to avoid being a total fanboy, I have two very minor crits. one is perhaps to clean up some of the pencil lines. they give it great character around the head, but the hatching near the bottom isn't necessary. the second is that the cow dragon's sides don't give enough of an impression of curving around it. the large pearl coloured centre scales wrap nicely but then it looks like the torso flattens as it changes to the white and black scales. maybe if some of those intermediate white scales were larger, it would work better. It still works the way it is too, let's see some more from you!

JustaArtist - nice rendering. one crit is that the dragon doesn't look like it's gripping the rock below it, looks "pasted" on the background. otherwise, great work.

Sammy - you made a crazy idea work beautifully. it looks awesome but for me lobsters always conjure up the idea of bottom feeding, rather than gliding through the water like a whale. I just get the image of that heavily armoured beast sinking like a rock.

staceydiana - nice work, definitely reminds me of archaeopteryx!

everyone else, great dragons! don't have time to comment on them all but there are some real cool ideas here. Some of the pencil sketches are simply astounding.

Well, my last name is Manchester. Yeah, I can't wait to get this collosal monstrosity created in 3D. Gonna be a blast to model and texture, since lobsters are just so fucking cool!

Heres an albino lobster. (http://www.lobster.um.maine.edu/lobster/photoofmonth/leslie%20ricker%20blue%20lobster2.jpg) I think these guys come around like one in a million, just a genetic anomaly

thats a blue lobster.. albino lobsters are pure white, and are also the only lobster which doesnt go red when cooked because they have no pigmented colouring

How the heck did he draw that texture on that dragon? O_o
I've been trying for ages and failed every single time.
Would obi or someone else give me a quick walktrough or something on that? You know with a couple of pictures of that in different stages?
