:O holy.....
omg I so love this site =D so many good pictures!
Some of them sure kick asses! :x

I love the speedpaint ones =D
You guys are an inspiration! I am a passionate dragon-artist (or to tell the truth: I can't draw much more. lol. i suck) and looking at some of these pieces makes me wanna draw!

But unfortunatly, my 'style' is way diffrent then yours and I guess you won't like it at all xD'
Maybe I am just a covart to not show them here. lol... O_o maybe? I AM a covart! =P I don't want to be ripped in pieces.
I'm not very active on conceptart.org... but I still love to see the drawings that are posted here <3

Ok I know this is not an actuall drawing but its one I did with my scupture and adobe Photo shop. I sculpted this dragon for the Martin Brothers custom bike shop here in Dallas. If you dragon fans want to see more of the dragons I sculpted you can see them on my picture trail web site. Here are a couple pics.

Thanks Bro. Well i happened to be looking through a copy of computer gamming world one day and saw a dragon flying over a castle and thought to capture a dragon in flight or just taking off would be pretty kool. Propoing the dude on his tail was about the only way i figured i could make it work. I also spoke to Karl Sander out in LA on some ideas for the wings. He did the sculptur Keeper of Time. A great work of Dragon Art. He gave me a few pointers. I concider him one of my biggest inperations in sculpting. Also He great to chat with on the subject of dragons. :teeth:

Apoc, you might want to wait til you get a response from Sammy if his image is down. It could be down for a reason and if he wouldn't want it posted, it wouldn't be right for someone else to post his work without permission. ;)

Her wings were clipped and bound tight, and her life was hard. In nature her wings were beautiful and would attract her a mate, but here she has a new purpouse, and so do her wings.

I did this in a program called ArtRage (http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.html), it has an increadable pincel tool.

I am a big fan of the D&D looking dragons. So there you go:
As a warmup, a practice drawing where pose and shape is taken loosly from the D&D monster manual (Not sure which edition or what page but those of you who have read it will recognise it).

haha awesome Mike, did you draw the lines digitally? (it looks like you did, and do you have a cintiq by chance? good lines are hard to do on a Intuos 3)

Damn Feng is so good and all his shit looks like he did it a couple minutes. I think I'm gonna do one hehe.

Tyranx, yea I spent about an hour staring at all fengs new work, his environments, props, creatures..for Battle for Middle Earth 2 are insane. The rough line work that looks like it took him 10 minutes has just as much appeal as the more detailed full color scenes. Those full color scenes though are dynamic as hell and have such awesome use of light, color and texture. I like how he incorporates a couple background photographs with the design..looks seamless.

I drew the dragon in PS 7.0 with a intuos 2, sometimes its a pain to try and get smooth lines but I've played around a lot with the pressure control and usually use the Airbrush Pen Opacity Flow - brush which is a default brush and adjust the pressure size. I'm gonna do a few more dragons in that style as a series..its just fun, but I need to work more on actually designing something more original the first dragon looks rather generic and boring, nothing really exciting about him.

I'll pm Jakkas.. i think he said he's a lil busy last time i spoke to him, i got him doing a character and creature design similar to that creature design process 101 activity but also with orthos for each. I'm sure he'd be interested, we could work off of each others designs and kind of mold and change things and just work up a couple interrelated species that would exist in the same world.

Unfinished because Photoshop locked up and I had to take a low quality screen cap, and I don't have the time or willpower to redo almost all the coloring and finish him up from my last save point....

And since I was focused on my coloring technique his overall design is sorta bland....

Great thread, some very inspiring entries posted. I feel I could have been a bit more creative and make my dragon a little less generic, might just make another attempt later. Still, I am sort of satisfied with what I got so far.
First time poster by the way. :)

f'ed up the wings

I like this one!

It was only as I quoted your post that I saw your comment about effing the wings...cause that's exactly what I wanted to say! :) The left wing looks great - it's the dragon's right wing that looks backward, if that makes any sense.

This kind of dragon is already inspiring me, too. Now, I just need to get the drawing from my head to the computer...

yea it makes perfect sense, i should have looked at a bird or bat or something, neither of the wings look correct, they both connect weird and don't match either. I'll have to rework him if i get a chance..

Awesome stuff in here - whiteee, mikeeeC, Tyranx(eee), Shamagim, the list goes on...

Anyway, I've decided to finally jump in. Or at least wet my big toe... Still trying to become more proficient with PS and Painter, and it's made me realise I really need to expand my brush library.

This was a quickie, bout 30mins - I've drawn inspiration from Tyranx's technique (amongst other similar artists). I quite like the style as it seems fast and always has interesting textures.

So the wings would be used more as stabilazation while running rather than for flight? Sounds cool to me.

Anyways, it's been a long while since I visited Conceptart.org...and spending hours yesterday looking at this thread was a great way to reintroduce myself to the website.

there are tons of tutorials out online and here. Its always a great thing to learn from those that have master the art we work in.

Floral Dragon. Its breeding habits are much like that of any ordinary flower, pollen is dusted from male to female by insects and wind. Blooming happens at night. After pollenation is completed, the stamens wilt and fall off, the petals become dark and dull until the next breeding season arrives. Seed pods wart up like grapes onto the females neck until the clear orbs hatch and the little green sprouts grow together in masses on trees, much like moss.

Mostly absorb food through sunlight, moonlight, and insects. Size, up to 1 foot in length.

Not my best dragon ever, there are some serious anatomical issuses not to mention the far from wonderful colouring job. However once i had drawn the dragons face in that expression it just cracked me up.

you lack realism in you pics and it really shows especially with dragons they are a very hard concept to draw and even i cant do that well. look at snakes hawks and tigers and cheetahs that will keep the dragons anatomy at least something beliaveable and im not one to rant but there is alot of room for improvementalso try new medias such as ink pick up a ink artist pen try that switching medias might start some ....some you know talent or skill, google dragons and copy start to meld ideas together and youll pick it up but this isnt picking it up nor a dragon.

p.s. can anyone pm me on the best way(s) to get large scale artwork onto the computer?

My scanner only has a letter-size area, so when it's a big piece of art, I usually scan in sections with some planned overlapping, and then tile it together with a bit of clean-up in Photoshop. The largest piece I've scanned as of yet was a tight pencil illustration on a 3ft x 2 ft illustration board, and it all worked out fine. :)

I specialize in dragons...here is one of mine. The inspiration was from a hundred-headed dragon named Ladon in Greek mythology. Maybe I'll do a sculpt of it someday :x

WOW! these images are mindblowing!!

I really want to upload some my pictures that were inspired by this thread but I don't think they'll be viewable...
for some reason I can only see my pics just after I've uploaded them and then not at all after that...also I can't see some of the images posted by other people too, maybe it's my browser?

right, here are a few sketches (it's all I can do!!) of dragons

old raptor sketch:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s304/goblinoffroth/raptoredited.jpg
probably inspired by whatever I was doing at the time (v old probs 5-6 years?)

conventional one (love it one of my favourite pics ever)
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s304/goblinoffroth/dragon.jpg
just thought of the pose and had to draw it! unusually for me this is pen and pencil!

k this is a kind of insecty critter:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s304/goblinoffroth/pain.jpg
one of those all nighters, you just cannot sleep til it's done (maybs last october)

this one was inspired by this site and I used a new method of drawing for it:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s304/goblinoffroth/divingdrake_edited.jpg
slightly edited on photoshop (clicked one button and it looked cool...)

now I just have to learn how to become uberskilled at using desktop publishing stuff etc and maybe spend a little longer than 5 mins on a picture before losing interest...+ learn me some background stuff and maybe I could turn out a snazzy finished piece in say 20 years time...

Had a quick go at inking in photoshop, turns out it's not too hard even I managed! well a basic concept...

Really enjoyed doing this got a little carried away with the clouds...(jet trail top right)

Sorry man, but it looks to me like all you did is you might have played with the levels and darkened your pencils. That is as far from inking as you can possibly get (even when done on the comp). THose clouds look insanely cool though! :)

*Note* I used a drawing book to draw these, but I hope to draw my own in the future!

So like, your all pro with photoshop. I can do basic stuff like make a plain sphere look 3D. But how do you do stuff like you did in your dragon pics?? It's amazing. I have sketchs of my dragons, but I want them in colour. If anyone could help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Lady aisha: there are many tutorials on the web to help you use photoshop, try typing dragon art tutorials into google and see what comes up. I really have no idea what I'm doing on ps I just read a basic tutorial and played around when I should have been doing my project...
And post the sketches anyway, I have and haven't been rebuked so far... *looks shiftily in the direction of the mods*

Comixnut: Yeah I did just play with the contrast and brightness, didn't even know what I was doing, I was just trying to define the lines for easier colouring.

a couple more sketches from me:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s304/goblinoffroth/dragon3_edited.jpg
going to colour this after 6th June (woot nearly finished!)

liked this enough to colour it:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s304/goblinoffroth/flyinglessoncolourwingfil.jpg
but none too happy with the wings...still a wip

this is probably the most recent detailed dragon sketch, need to develop it...finish the wings, make it bigger etc, colour blah blah blah:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s304/goblinoffroth/dragon2_edited.jpg

keep posting this thread it's wicked!!

By the way Pazuzu333: love those dragons! what's your medium? lolike pencil colours to me, have you tried watercolour pencil thingies (don't know the proper name sorry) where you colour in using a pencil and paint over it using water and get a soft blended effect, looks totally sweet.
I haven't used them for about 10 years...it might be a little harder than I remember...*calculates age 10 years ago* defo harder than I can remember!!
Slight crit of the last image, there doesn't seem to be any shape to the horns, try continuing the shadows from the horn sockets onto the horns themselves, otherwise great job!

Grenogs- The original Idea of the thread when it was first started was to spark the interest of designing original/unique takes on dragons in new work. However people started to post old work as well as new, so feel free to post what you got ;)

cheers mike, its a pretty old piece, done in alkyds. Basicly a chinese dragon, but i'd like to do something in digital soon, that is when i get the time to, :)

Alkyds you say? Hm, maybe I'll try that out some day, but then again I don't know much about it.

grenogs

thank lord m :) yeah, i've used alkyds for years, its basicly oil paints except with a much faster drying process. If you ever do try it sometime, just make sure you underpaint first to get solid even colouring, in just the same way you would with traditional oils.

Thought I would put up my old COW entry. Here ye old dragons lay. This was a
jade dragon. I draw and draw and will improve with time. Draw until you bleed!
Then draw some more.
