Theres some anime stuff that is really amazing, and i defiantely get alot of inspiration from it. But it seems like lately its such a fad thing that everyone is drawing some kind of anime.
Its kind of overdone. I think one of the most amazing things about art is the distinct style that the artist develops for himself. When you choose to draw anime, youre sacrificing alot of leeway for developing one of your own that is truly different.

I got into studying anime's various styles after several commission requests. It's actually a fairly varied style (from SD/Chibi to the more realistic "Ghost in the Shell" style), but it takes a lot of studying to get the nuances. A fun challenge if you're a realistic artist by nature.
ChaosEidolon, however, does bring up an important point: while it's sometimes fun and challenging to work within a certain style (I've had to draw the Powerpuff Girls directly to-model, ironically not as easy as one might think), it's not yours, and can be restrictive. The moment you hear yourself complaining about its constraints, break the rules or move on.
A few people like Chad Townsend (ChadTHX1138 on this forum) have, IMHO, taken the style and really played with it to make it something new. That's when it becomes fun again!
Big, fat caveat: If you are just starting out, DO NOT try to cop on a style like anime. It will color your work for some time, becuase it has little to do with real anatomy. Learn to draw what your eye sees first...there is no substitute or excuse.
That said, it's still fun from time to time. :-p

I'm more into the serious anime, not the kiddy stuff. There's anime like Dragonball and Sailor Moon then there's Vampire Hunter D and Blood.

One) I love anime, so much fun to watch, I'm not a fan of kiddy anime, I am a Jin Roh kind of gal.
Two) It's ok when people draw it IN THEIR OWN DEVELOPED STYLE. I have seen some works that are anime that have made me wan't to just give up art and go back to my website creations. But then I see someone who has obviously traced or is trying to match another's style, that is what I do not like.
three) Anime is great for drawing, good for conveying some emotions, great for making comics and things. But I wouldn't suggest submitting Anime in a portfolio. It's kind of like furres, It's great, it kicks butt, but don't show it to your college professors. x.x
Those are just my feelings. :3

my opinion on anime: I was into anime in the 6th grade and watched it just up untill about 2 years ago (im 21 now) ive pretty much seen the rise of the whole anime craze. Personally i hate it. And i really cant stand it when an artist gets sucked into the frenzy. They give up all hope for creating a style of their own. and then get lumped into a pile of anime artists. And frankly if youre a serious artist and you draw anime....pray to god youre going to get hired....cuz think about it....if you want to animate over in japan...im willing to bet that there are 20 japanese animators that are better than you and more willing to start at the bottom. I think thise extreme view point of anime came when you couldnt walk the halls of school anymore and be the only person wearing an anime shirt. Its a real shame cuz there are some great animes out there that inspire me to do good work. If you cant draw A+ quality anime...then dont try...its a lost cause in my opinion. its a fad....it will die down and go away

Well anime compared to U.S traditional animation is very diffrent, Anime uses limited animation (holdin frames, whilst jsut animatong one part) where as U.S animation or traditional aniamtion everything is animated, so theres teh diffrence i notice .. as for liking it...... hteres only a couple that hold up to the garbage that is usually pumped out. crap like yu gi oj, or car aptors or digimon is total waste of paper where as breathtaking anime like, devilman, or akira, ghost in teh shell, gundaam, i respect that stuff.:bash:

I duno, I really don't care for anime anymore. I used to love it a lot. I prefer manga's over anime like Bokko or Blame!. anything that doesn't have the damn SD/Chibi. its been done ot death and people still beat it like no mercy.
The last manga that I really enjoy (still do) was Violinist no Hamlen. Then the anime was kinda good but at the same point sucked. But I still felt like it was a decent enough series and after that I just lost interest with any of the new stuff. I’ll prob watch 2 or 3 episodes then I get board and back to square one.
i'm glad I still love manga though hehe just the serious one now- my time with SD past me years ago with violinist hamlen/ Guru guru *middle school days heh
..........somehow I don't think this belongs in this section.

Anime? na', Anime isn't something you can do anything to as a whole. And I'm not so sure that anime can even be regarded as only an visual art, which is worth talking about as well. But my main issue has less to do with Anime and more with outlook. This thread is doing something dangerous, and for most everyone, what I'm going to mention isn't even a direct issue, but it's still better to be away of it. Grouping and labeling, what this thread is somewhat doing and somewhat encouraging...is dangerous. That said, I think I'll hit everything in the order presented.
Anime isn't something that can be safely lumped together at any level. Here's an example. Most of you've seen Akira. And most of you'll remember the chase scene at the beginning, the one where Tetsuo feels he has to prove himself and charges ahead... Man, I'm still drooling over the backgrounds and lights. Heh, I still get a little inspiration from them to. But then I think about that flat looking lead pipe with all the screws in it, or the custard-thick blood... There are parts of every anime genre, or flick (movie), or even an individual scene or image that a person will like, and parts that they just aren't going to get into, that's innate. And unless you get very specific like I did back there, its impossible to give a yes/no answer.
Sure, I love anime, I get a buzz off it. I dream parts of it. I draw from it. I am influenced by it, even in ways I probably don't realize. I've copied some of it, and imitated the parts I liked - to expand my styles and abilities - but to say that *its* all good, or *its* all bad...or to say that I've outgrown *it...I can't do that. I can't call anime an "it." It just doesn't work that way for me.
Just a preemptive response here, for those who just don't like anime, trust me, there's going to be a part you like, somewhere. You just haven't found it yet. Trust me on that.
My other thought; Anime isn't just a visual art. Its easy to talk about it like it is, or like you can just pull that visual portion away from it, but I never could. Every anime is presented a certain way, with certain accompaniments. You can't expect to get the same reaction from the independent parts of a greater whole. And it really isn't worth trying, 'least not for me.
Conclusion. Love it, hate it, whatever. But just don't ignore it. Don't label it for personal convenience, just so you can pretend to know about it. Because if you snub anything in life, anything that you've been blessed enough to experience, then you're missing one of the big two points of life.
My bro' made the point that I sound very atheist/post-modern. Which brings something else up, my background on this. I'm a white, middle-class, twenty-something, Georgia (USA) Unitarian. I'm big of philosophy and the mental stuff, which is why I got into anime. More directly, I think God creates us humans for to reasons: to love him and each other, and to experience life and enjoy it as much as humanly and moralistically possible. (And I don't mean Puritanical morality.) But if you're not into the Christ thing, then go Dada, or Gestalt, or Scientologist, whatever. The good ones all tell you to be happy and keep your eyes open, so who cares exactly who said it? And if you aren't into religion/philosophy at all, then you've probably already thought about the dangers of grouping and ignoring things, cause life is short; you get old; you stop breathing; and that's all there is to it. [chuckle; "heh"] Guess I just had all that pent up for a while. Peace
