Hey guys. :)
As part of my preparation for college I decided to try and draw at least one piece everyday and post it here for all to crit. XD So I won´t write too much as I know everyone wants to see drawings and sketches..so voila!
I hate my scanner.

Yeah..the proportions aren´t quite right..but I still wanted to finish it.. I call it the Alien Hand. ;)

Just random character sketches. I thought I´d include them here although I want to concentrate on life drawing for now.

A WIP. A little tribute to Jean Paul II. I still want to detail his robes more, maybe work out the shadows better..but just wanted to show it and get comments. :)
Comments and crits are always welcome! Please be as honest as possible. I really want to get better. :yayca:

Good start here, man. Aside from the usual "practice more anatomy, etc..." all I can tell you is that I think you should try experimenting with the use of harder edges in your shading, and maybe use some more line too - like in the picture of the hand closing the fingers together.
On the portrait, his nose looks crooked as does his mouth, though I don't know what the Pope looks like off hand...
Good stuff man, just keep practicing and it will all improve as time goes on.
Da Vinci wasn't a master from birth, you know... :} (wow, that emoticon is scary.)

at this point you should concentrate less on shadows and more on proportions and form, and as stated lines.
and thiws is not looking so daily to me ;)

Hehe, sorry bout that. I´ve been trying to get my stuff done for today but I woke up with fevers and such. I start to draw and I doze off. XP
Ill try to finish more hand studies a bit later to meet today´s deadline. Not like I have anything else to draw and I´ll need the practice... but to keep my future fans happy, here´s a blast from the past.

Hey bud, just dropping a line. You have a good grasp on values, but like they said-- I'd work on the anatomy a lot.. or atleast drawing what you see more.

Hey hey...I've finally dropped by :)
Yup, you've got a handle on values. Just work on the measuring part and you'll be awesome. I remember hearing about a teacher who would measure something using 4 different reference points before marking down anything. I should try that sometime...I only use 2 at the most...
post more ;)

You're a lot like me, and as such I would suggest you check my book. You'll see similair issues, where I understood value to a great extent, but never worked on anatomy. That is a problem of extreme importance. Improper anatomy is hard to unlearn, so I suggest you work on just that: anatomy. THEN push those values. Great start, I'm sure we will see great things from you.

A quick SP. Thought I'd give the shading a rest and concentrate on placing things right.. I hope I did a good job.

nice, stuff, but i have i thought
I like the way that you are working on shadows and stuff. Its really good and your excercises are very nice. However, I feel that if you were to study more anatomy and building up things with perspective, that you increase the shading capabilities. Even though commen sense says that to get better at something is to do it again and again, it really works about in drawing when you practice something else like (block building), something else (shading with values) also improve. They are all related, doing that will probably improve your depth perception. :)
this is the kinda of stuff I'm talking about btw (a worksheet a teacher gave me)

Andoo - *Has to laugh at the moles comment* :teeth: That craked me up. ;)
I see what you mean.. I've gotten used to be sketchy and not really take care of the lines..but that -was- just a sketch. I will take your comments into account and fix it tough! Gotta take those moles off. ;)
And yes, to be honest the eyes were half from imagination. Had glasses on and couldn't see well through the reflection. :bashful:

Hey hey Jay...yup, I have to agree, that cactus is pretty good. Trees are damn hard to draw...I'm still trying to find a way to draw a tree without making lots of little dots for leaves. As for the SP, be careful when you tilt your head like that. It can throw you off a little. It also looks like you're tilting your head up a bit too. Try doing some SPs that are simple and don't require you to bend your head in all sorts of directions. Straight on or 3/4ths like in your avatar.
And don't forget to VHASP!
Verticals
Horizontals
Angles
negative Spaces and
Proportions
;)
Keep it simple, and keep on posting :)
PS...about that mannequin worksheet, isn't it Hogarth and not Howarth? :P I assume it's referencing Burne Hogarth.

nice block people. nice shading.
however, the purpose i wanted you to see the block people is to enable one to present form and 3 dimensional shapes without reverting to shading. I know this is a probably a differently philosophy of drawing from what you are used to--I was taught to only draw with shadows and lights myself--however, after taking some industrial drawing course where I learned to drawing form with minimal shading and with various contour lines, when i when back to graphite renderings, i realized my rendering improved a great deal because i gained a different perspective on my understanding of form.
Just think about it, if you can work up to the level to make something look 3d without any shading, then you will be able to accomplish with minimal or maximum shading would be phenomenal.

Hehe, well, this prolly won't count as a real update. Been really busy lately and somewhat down..I know it's not an excuse for not drawing but...
Anyhow! I got my wacom tablet today. Graphire3. It's weird, but definetly fun to use! So I bring you...my first wacom sketch!

Well, for about a month my scanner's been dead. Darn HP. Warranty's expired, so..I'll just have to save up for a new one.
I recently discovered Open Canvas from some friends and I finally tested it last night. So, here's two little studies I did this morning while trying to figure why the damn scanner gets jammed in the middle of preview scans.

Yes, I get my Intous 3 tomorrow =O
I like them, but your hands always seem rigid. I like the one on the right, but the one on the left seems a bit wonky. Try to do that construct thing where you do the circles and forms. (Without erasing them to make it look like a hand.) Try doing some freestyle hands ina pose, put your hand in that pose, and see what you did wrong. Otherwise, keep it up!
