View Full Version : creep's fresh start

Well, it's been a long while since my last post,
during which time I've been struggling to get
motivation back.
That was a tough one, given the failure that was
my first thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=18977).
Anyway I hope to be able to overcome this
block and regain my initial momentum, with
this new fresh start.
Well, that's about it here's where I am at right now,
and I hope to move along with your help.

hey ... good to have you back !
I'll go right at the crits, if that's ok with you :)
Something's off in your headconstructions, I see you use Loomis (I think), but here & there lines, angles are slightly off, and make a flawed face. To figure out WHAT exactly goes wrong (I find it hard to put my finger on it), use some tracing paper and trace Loomis's constructions, his finished heads and some photo's of real people (some by just tracing, and some by putting the constructionlines in) ... you can even do this on the pc: a nice test is: put in the sphere & the lines on it (browline & direction_of_head-line) ... from then on try to construct the whole thing by hiding the layer with the photo on ... but check if you were right for every step, and correct when necessary.
Try to find the flaws in your construction, 'thinking' process while doing this !
It shouldn't take too much time either ... just trace 1 or 2 images every so often, when things are looking off, or just to make sure ...
I think you should expecially give some attention to the placing of the browline, placing of the lips, and placing of the ears !
With that out of the way ...
I love your big eyed peoples !
Nice lines & shading ... keep pushing & playing with those !!
You got some nice sense of volumes as well !
I'd love to see you draw a more finished piece as well ... taking some more time to really push the values, dig through some anatomybooks/magazines for anatomy-help ... I think if you see for instance the leg-anatomy in a fairly close view, you can turn it easily enough (in your head) to fit your drawing. Challenge yourself ! :P
Hope to see you update more often now !! :)

thanks, NightVision. Yes, my anatomy is still crappy. Hope I'll be able to fix it, eventually. :) I need to find more time to draw. That is what I remembered from Loomis, I need to start reading those books again. I still am looking for someone that would send me some books, as online shopping in Romania, is still way too complicated :(
I will do some tracing, too :) and post something this weekend, hopefully.
Oh, and you're right with the finished pieces, too. I work 2-3 hours on a piece, then I start to see the errors, so I find it kind of hard to continue working on it :(
For now, I only have some more big eyed people ;)

I would recommend trying to stear clear of the cartoons. Your more realistic drawings are pretty good though. One question what is up with that guy's mouth who is holding the topless lady. I think some sharper controsts would make that pic look a little better.

Thanks, Will.
The cartoons are something kind of new to me, that's why I'm concentrating that much on doing them. The realsitic stuff I do, I find pretty frustrating. :(
You're right about that pic, I will work more on it.
Thanks again.

Keep doing the cartoons now and then if that's a way to keep the fun in drawing for you.
Just try to focus on doing anatomy studies too, they're not as fun to do, but they will certainly improve your drawings.
Keep it up!

Thanks buzzz3d. I know how important anatomy is, I hope I can get my hand on some books next paycheck :)
Well, quick doodles before I go to bed

On saveloomis.org (http://www.saveloomis.org) you can download some of Loomis' books in pdf-format.

Thanks, buzzzz3d :))
I've already downloaded them. I asked somebody in Canada to buy for me Vanderpoel, he said he did and that he'd send it to me. That happened in the summer of 2004, I still haven't got the book :)
I need to get some anatomy-centred books. With bones and muscles and stuff. The only one I could find in Romania, was about 100$, which is kind of too much for my salary :( (500$/mo) but I hope I get a big, fat bonus this Easter :)

Very nice stuff. I love the one of the freaky guy and the naked woman. Of course, crits are the basics (work on anatomy, feelings in your drawings) but I really like your approach. I would also agree to steer away from cartooning, unless of course you are just trying to draw for fun 8) (although art should be fun, even if you put hard work into it :))
Keep up the good work!

Thanks, mos667. Cartoons are out, then :) I drew cartoons because I've been trying to clean up my linework, which is still way too messy.
Will do some more anatomy studies soon enough I hope. We'll see if I can save something this Easter.
Updates.
